[Music] a surprise asteroid strikes Earth's atmosphere burning up over the Philippines with all of Humanity's telescope and eyes on the skies it's rare for an asteroid to take us by surprise and yet they do th what happened this morning the Skies over the Philippines only hours after it was detected it burned up in the bright flash above the island of Luzon in the Philippines NASA's Catalina Sky survey detected a small asteroid now named 2024 rw1 only hours before it reached Earth atmosphere it was only about 1 meter in diameter about 3 ft and posed no threat even though Reports say it struck the Earth in reality it only struck the atmosphere here where objects at small burn up the video captured from the northern tip of the Philippines shows a flashing Fireball partly obscured by clouds the asteroid briefly created a tail which disappeared quickly and this is only the ninth time that we've detected an asteroid before it reached Earth though the European Space Agency says that a 1 meter asteroid as this one hits the Earth every two weeks being taken by surprise by an asteroid is an unusual feeling but though it was a surprise it was detected before it reached us we can take comfort that our automated automated Sky surveys detect such a small object if it was large enough to cause any amount of damage it would not it would have been brighter and we would have detected it much sooner though this one was no danger that's not always the case in 2013 the 18 ton near Earth asteroid called the chellia B meteor exploded over the Russian city it created extensive ground damage and um uh medical people needing medical attention were about 1,500 there were no victims than goodness Earth has suffered much more catastrophic impacts than that throughout its history and that Spectre haunts our civilization the jiul lube impact caused the mass extinction and ended the dinosaurs about 66 million years ago the redor crater in South Africa was excavated two billion years ago by an impactor between 10 and 15 kilm in diameter but it's not just an asteroid size that's the problem they strike Earth with great velocity the esac says that 2024 rw1 was traveling at 17.6 km/s or 63,360 km an hour which is the average speed for these objects both NASA and Esa actively search for and catalog the asteroid population NASA also invites experts to take part in regular mock exercises and these exercises teams of people are fed regular fabricated updates on the approach of a dangerous asteroid and asked to take whatever actions they see fit 20124 rw1 was no threat in fact it's a beautiful natural spectacle but it's also a reminder that Earth is not isolated from the cosmos though in day-to-day life it can seem like it is this is from you nurse today even go on science alert please leave your comments thank you for your support support my patreon account The Daily Posts are five videos daily and they are totally different from what I have on my YouTube channel thank you so much for your support and that you find all my content so interesting in you'll find the patreon Account Details In the description box below
