An "Android Guy watching the Apple keynote" Livestream (Commentary Only!)

let's see here for hey apologies uh let's see here where are you all getting this live stream you are on YouTube Okay I uh I got a notice from YouTube of course that basically said all right you've been flagged I didn't get a strike but I got a uh I got a flag and I had to do this like little questionnaire to say that I understand um why why it was removed that's a bummer I probably had twice as many live streams going on the last one but any who um let me kind of tweet out the new the new thing so I'm a little distracted for a second okay tweeting this out that was pretty dumb of me I I just wasn't thinking I uh I'm kind of sort of here [Laughter] today I had enough of a crazy weekend that I'm kind of yeah a little out there today but anyways we're making it happen bad Jason bad okay so for those who don't know um I was live streaming the Apple event um simultaneously and that's a bad idea you're not supposed to do that so anyways I got a warning on YouTube totally deserved whatever um um so if you're watching this and you actually want to like hear the Apple event while I'm talking about it uh then you got to open it up in another window so go to a Apple's YouTube um channel in another browser or another window and stream the video there and then you know you can maneuver the the audio balance and everything I wish I could simal cast it but that's not okay all right so Apple watch 10 I missed a lot of that but yeah I mean it probably is it seems like fair use to me too but I can't risk losing the channel that is called a chilling effect that's what that is aha sleep up uh if you've exper if you experienced sleep apnea raise your hand this is actually the sleep apnea Tech is actually that's that's a big deal I mean sleep apnea impacts a lot a lot of people and I mean they're talking about undiagnosed sleep apnea um I think a lot of people I would consider myself I really dragged my feet on this for a long time and I'm still only sort of taking it seriously which is stupid maybe I shouldn't admit that but um I think a lot of people don't get the sleep test you know it takes some effort to really get diagnosed and so having something like this in your watch I think is a a really great first step it's going to alert people and be like okay there's something going on here if your spouse telling you oh by the way you hold your breath and when you snore at night when you sleep and I can't sleep cuz it's noisy and I'm scared for you if you're spouse telling you that isn't enough then you know maybe you'll listen to your Apple watch no man Tay actually ate really well I worked in the kitchen the whole time so we were feeding everybody and it was awesome we made some really great food so no we didn't eat squirrels oh that was a cool little camera move the camera inside the sleeve move well your watch isn't going to help you but it could be a great first step it could be a great awareness tool for a lot of people I think you know I think in general when it comes to change of of any type awareness is the most important first step and uh watch Being able to alert you at these things is a great kind of starting point does wearing a watch mean you're suddenly healthy no absolutely not but it it can clue you in that's a good thing gives you route map good question Greg that an a reflective screen is legit on the s24 ultra it's funny it's funny that you mention the s24 ultra because I have when I got back from Italy I recorded my my Italian review of the s24 ultra and I've just my life everything is so crazy that like I don't have enough time in my day to do all the things to finish all the things and so I'm editing it right now so anyways one of the things that I do is I side by side compare the the anti-glare feature and it's legit what's up oh doctor good to have you here man good to see you yeah I wonder if Apple is going to make a ring I still haven't had a chance to check out the Samsung ring uh I would love to do that but it kind of sounds kind of sounds hit and miss 3.99 pre order yeah I've heard good things about the AA ring I've not used it the Ultimate Sports watch they're uh they're leaning heavily into uh We've we uh took our camera crew all around San Francisco they're hitting all the places Clinton no I did not I'm still in the process of getting electrician out here to uh do the wiring so that it's right but I H I have that process going yeah I wish that I had it installed I'm really looking forward to using it for my daughter uses those swim uh some of those swim features on her Apple watch very handy for yeah Michael that seems to be the case with the ring it seems like it would be a really great kind of lowprofile way to get a lot of that data but also seems like the finger is maybe not the best place to to pull that information from still depending on the information you know that you're looking for it might not be as comprehensive but can it do a couple of things really well and I don't I don't know that it's even there especially for the cost you know the the ring the Samsung ring anyways very expensive yeah me me too Michael I would love to see that come to other devices sup buddy one of my best friends in the world Mark mckin good to see you man thinking about getting an Apple Watch for an older relative who's experiencing Falls both for the fall alert and the emergency communication aspect I I mean I'm assuming that your relative I could be wrong but I'm assuming that your relative has an i phone and if so I mean I don't know why you wouldn't get the Apple watch I mean it's yeah I'm trying to think if even the Samsung wearables have the fall alert they probably do actually the pixel might even have a fall alert no I'm a little foggy today sorry um yeah I know the the pixel watch can detect when you fall um and so that means almost certainly the Samsung watches have that but yeah it just really depends man if your relative already has iOS like kind of think the Apple watch you know if you're in that world if you're in that ecosystem why not and Apple's going to going to support that really well yeah the Galaxy watch 3 Samsung's watches some of them anyways have um have fall detection as well so that seems like seems like it's becoming table Stakes oh they don't have a mobile phone oh wow yeah I mean that might be good for them to have one for this sort of thing for the Emergency thing you know Apple watch Ultra for okay let's talk about airpods and they look like Samsung's old Galaxy butts no that'd be funny if if like they totally traded spots Samsung copies Apple's design and apple ends up going uh going with a bean approach yeah they do uh they do look very similar to uh the previous airpods that's for sure airpods 4 [Music] what's happening when in the house oop whoop yeah see yeah when we were talking about that it seems like fall detection is kind of table Stakes at this point for wearables good to have you here when I'm just not a fan of the earbuds that just like rest on the inside like I realized you know everybody has their preference as far as how these fit into the a canal Ron Richards on Android faithful he does not like the the kind that seals into the air canal and that's my preference is the sealing kind of approach for [Music] yeah Mark I can see that too there's probably a lot of different ways that you know but Apple's going to test for that stuff but there's probably a lot of different like ways that we unintentionally do things like nod or you know look over I I guess the thing is like it's a Siri command that's coming through that you're reacting to it's not just like every time you nod your head it it makes a call or something so you know yeah Su toine 102 uh yeah I agree not having the seal like I feel a lot more confident with the earbud when I have that seal and it doesn't bug my ear canal I know it does other people but it doesn't bug me what's going on Van goul good to have you here head movement for Siri with spatial audio seems cool do you use features like this on headphones um well I mean I use the pixel buds primarily I don't have actually I've been using a different type of earbud but I don't have them close by the cmf earbuds which are great and they don't have those like head movements or anything like that but they do have like the the pixel buds have the voice uh the handsfree I use that all the time like I love that actually given certain circumstances like if I'm out for a run or whatever I don't want to have to go you know as I'm running try and turn the volume down totally she's got iPhone Pro Max pockets yeah I mean the transparency mode for conversations like I just I just end up pulling them out of my ears I know I know some people like lean into the transparency mode and you know that allows the audio to pass through airpods 4 129 I feel like that's an inexpensive oh I see ANC for 179 anyways I just pop him out of my ear in that in that case because I feel like that that's a signal to the person that I'm talking to that I'm actually listening to them they don't have to make the guess it just feels nor natural to me to do that but I get it H oops what is it are there many Android folks like using airpods I mean they're just bluetooth earbuds right like they probably have some sort of baked in Integrations with with iOS and iPhone and stuff no question but yeah I don't really encounter that very much as opposed to like an Apple Watch like you're probably if you have an Android phone you're almost certainly not going to be using an Apple Watch but I think airpods are a little bit more more open right I'm open in air quotes but for well that's super kind of you three degree camber or maybe just camber thank you that's really kind of you I appreciate that doing a draft by I'm going to hit 30 Apple streams today each one of you gets five thank you camber that's really kind of you I appreciate that I can't remember my last hearing test definitely five years huh what oh that's interesting I wonder how audiologists feel about this that's interesting I'd love to test that out be super curious about that do side by side do that and then go to uh your doctor and have an actual test and see how they see if it's possible to to match them up and if so how they compare it'll be interesting for maybe Ron Richards needs to get an iPhone because he talks about you know all the concerts he and and shows he goes to and doesn't wear plugs which I can't throw stones because I'm I'm like 50/50 on whether I wear earplugs but I did get not too long ago the loop um uh earplugs this is not Apple by the way but basically you know they're the kind of earplugs that um they lower the volume they don't they don't you know they're not like the foam kind that you put in and everything gets all [Music] M it's like turning down the volume you know they weren't that expensive and figured it was nice to have a good pair of solid earplugs hi [Laughter] Kate yeah I do I'm sure I do too [Laughter] Mark that was a long time ago we didn't care about that sort of stuff oh and thinking about that now just it feels it's painful yeah I like it when it's good um I haven't had many opportunities to test them out I got it before I went to um to n in uh in January cuz I heard it can be really loud and um yeah yeah it was uh good good system I like it better than the foamy things you know the cheap cheapos iPhone time I didn't by the way get them because of Instagram ads I can't remember how I heard about them I think I was just doing research before that conference and uh came across yeah that is something that I know a lot about too Mark at this point not as much as you but I've had at least one year of exposure to that it's force and here it is the new iPhone did I tell you all that I got an iPhone I don't think I did no it's nothing it's it's not like a fancy schmancy iPhone it was literally because we moved to T-Mobile we moved everybody in the family to T-Mobile and they were like well you can get a free iPhone iPhone 13 so it's already three years old but um you get a free iPhone 13 uh you just have to pay like tax or whatever I was like you know probably be good for me to like have an iPhone just so that I could test some things and now of course like what is it 3 months after we switched and the 13 is now three years old so I don't know how honestly at some point this is going to go to my younger daughter when she's um when she gets her phone because she's gonna she wants an iPhone and so this will just be her phone it just made sense to get it now but she's going to get like a basically a brand new like iPhone 13 probably in like a year but oh wow so I'm looking at I'm looking at the base of the the new iPhone or the frame of the new iPhone and holy moly they are basically the same between that and the pixel 9 frame like the uh yeah that is crazy had a lot of people tell me like oh nice iPhone with the uh with the pixel 9 I'm like yeah yeah everybody has you know flat flat phones but holy moly like that frame looks so much the same oh always van goul there's always a way to find to crack your screen usually usually I'll be the one to figure it out try as I might not to yeah it really seems that way Tay same curve and and you know the the kind of brushed quality of it is very very much the same yeah it's pretty you know the only thing that the pixel 9 doesn't have compared to this is that inset that uh multi-function button yeah that's inset there's no inset button on the pixel 9 it's interesting how they have that different color accent around the the cameras that like darker blue Apple [Music] intelligence for [Music] smaller faster more hi Bronson how you doing buddy yeah you're a good boy yeah quick quick dog cam for you there you go buddy so the 15 had the a16 bionic and this is the a18 they skipped one what happened to the A7 they probably have a reason for that yet another wonderful location from San Francisco's historic landscape for I want to know more go on so yes it's Cloud but it's private H I want to no more okay so okay so they are taking the AI kind of uh uh summarization and you know llm tools and everything on more system based level to feed into everything versus I mean I guess Gemini sort of does that but I feel like it's I feel like it's still willy-nilly like I wonder if I wonder if you're in a non-apple app if you can use that integrated AI to generate this stuff cuz like Gmail you could do that but you know it's via Gmail I think and the Gemini app I yeah I'm trying to figure out what the differences are here when they say systemwide and it's integrated into the system does that mean that that touches everything that goes through the phone like all apps third party that sort of stuff or is it still isolated to just Apple's kind of curated list yeah but they're not going to do that tay they're not going to not release a phone for for a few years H summaries that's kind of interesting priority notifications okay it's the Siri we promised you years ago better now Bernard maybe design it's kind of sounded like the sloths from zootopia Bernard mber yeah well you know Mark Android or pixels have emoji that don't make sense to iOS they have uh audio emojis now that I don't think translate so there's that oh that's neat for for for I think I'll go there that's what I was thinking Mark he the guy's looking for all all sorts of ways to test this feature he like there's a poster there's a dog there's a chat GPT integrated oh excuse me I don't know is there a the parkour guy that I should know about I I honestly have no idea I doubt it I doubt it's the parkour guy if there's like a YouTuber or whatever but that would be that would be a cool little um little bonus I suppose just give it a little tappy just tap it in just tap it in for for well poag I don't know if you're reacting to something that just happened but yeah that was uh that was the news like a month ago um selling to ZD zip Davis for Snapchat Snapchat's really they've figured something out on getting these deals with the with the phone manufacturers like the pixel 9 has a thing where if you tap on the back watch tap tap Boop it launches into Snapchat and and iOS same thing what is it about Snapchat that they've they've like secured this deal with with the phone makers so so interesting the dog kind of looks like a a hairy human I'm a sucker for a good telephoto lens that's for sure never gets old to me which I don't really have on the pixel 9 right now so I miss it oh believe me Mark I know my my older daughter very into Snap I've been doing streaks with her which is hilarious thank you for saying that pwag pag yeah those were good days it was fun good times yeah so Majestic e acting I get it I understand good to see you here again oh it's cute doggy all right they're doing the Photo Removal tools they're bending reality what is a photo anyways for for for for don't have a whole lot to say about these game um franchises I just um I don't game very much these days look nice now for I pwag or pag I'm not finding any lowbudget phones that have uwb not saying that they don't exist but I don't know about them usually that's reserved for the higher end I've been seeing the little cellular thing pop up on my nine from time to time which I have to say it's kind of uh it's a good feeling like you know I was just up in the mountains and had very limited service and most of the time I had no service and yet I saw the satellite thing and there is a little bit of like additional um kind of comfort in seeing that because without it and you see no no coverage whatsoever like it's not like you can use that satellite just willy-nilly for anything but but it is nice to know it's like a visual reminder that like you're not totally screwed if you need something you know what I mean if an emergency happens and you're out of cell coverage area seeing that is a is a nice reminder that you that that you do have an option and that's nice is it going to do it sorry I forgot I can turn on face tracking and it'll follow me isn't that neat that is NE I I do like that yes it's a multi-function button but it's also kind of like swipe sensitive uh with a photo feature set kind of embedded into that button I'd be curious to play around with that like using that for like zoom and stuff sometimes I find the onscreen Zoom kind of thing at least on Android phones depending on how it's implemented can be a little finicky you know that button does kind of take it further into the um kind of the more older School Paradigm of having a control that isn't uh completely attached to the touchscreen thing I guess I could I could trade in my iPhone 13 that I just got and get a discount I want actually I wonder if my discount would be greater than the tax I paid on it to get it yeah but let's be honest I'm not going to do that here come the pros yeah it is a little weird yeah I'll turn it off doing it now no okay there we go is a little strange it's like all the little movements it's like oh I'll follow you there yeah okay so they're showing off the multi-function thing I'd be curious to see I'd be curious to hear what you would get for an iPhone 12 as tradein value CG not real I'm holding the front of my pixel 9 up and it's like the same size as one of those on the screen and I mean from the front it looks so similar it is kind of interesting how how close these phones look I mean the nine you know obviously has the The Oblong kind of like pill-shaped camera compared to how they're doing the camera system on the iPhone 16 series but very similar very similar yep all about that bump all about about that bump about that bump hi Bron hey buddy yeah I know dog cam all right have a good appointment when good to see see you see you have a good rest of your day aren't they all iPhone 16 Pro builds from the ground up for Apple intelligence aren't they all they're all built for AI now that's just the that's the mobile moment now on Android you can use the recorder to record a meeting um and you know have it summarize it but on device but it's has a limit I think right now the limit is like 20 minutes 25 minutes or something like that which is I mean how many minutes are how many meetings are 25 minutes they're usually at least a half an hour if not an hour so that's a little underwhelming I wonder how iOS um you know what what uh what that's going to be with with the new iPhones hey Lee thank you that's so kind of you I appreciate that yeah I mean I think what am I most impressed by so far I mean I think I'm most I think what the the feature that is most immediately compelling to me is the multi-function button and how it integrates with the camera like seeing that kind of swiping space and I'd love to play around with that and kind of see you know how much that makes sense in in use like do you have to learn a new kind of um interaction language almost and and if you do that's fine like we all learn new things about our devices and especially on Apple devices people are perfectly happy to do that but um but I'd be curious like does that actually improve the camera's experience um so I think that's neat apple is not the only you know manufacturer of course to to do a multifunction button um but I feel like the other multifunction buttons that I've seen have been a like a button and not like a a touch surface and we've seen buttons like that on other phones but usually they're like um they're the power button with a fingerprint sensor embedded into them you know um so anyways I'm curious to see how how that is in practice um I think also the the sleep apnea um call out for the watch is is kind of interesting I think you know again it's about kind of calling awareness is it a is it a medical tool no but if it if it might make someone aware that they have something to look into like that's that's a very good thing I would applaud it for that so yeah it's a couple of things thank you for being here Lee thank you for the for the super thanks I appreciate that good to have you here well without the controversy yet that might there might be controversy around it I don't know PR res video recording I have been gone for the last 5 days is so I have not seen the latest news about telegram but it does appear that the news is that they are going to be um they're going to be opening up um reportability about contents of private chats not looking good for telegram in my opinion if if that's the the way that they're going but they're you know they're doing this in response to everything happening with the founder and all that so um yeah but I mean none none of it is good optics for for the for a service that purports to be about privacy in private chat for 5x is good 10x is better but 5x is good I mean let's be real I'd love to have a 5x on my nine right now so when you're using that multifunction and zooming in do you get a little bit of like that that taptic like you know to get a little bit of a rattle I wonder they're kind of alluding to it with the sound effect I wonder if there's a little a little click that satisfying kind of like click along with it that you feel for that was an interesting photo of the the woman in the water oh really NS xla I mean Apple's uh yeah they're dropping the hammer I guess I mean I had my stream up on on YouTube and it got removed um and so I had to open this one up and basically tell everyone to open the stream in a separate window which is fine I'm not I'm probably not even going to keep this live stream up on the channel I don't think it really serves much of a purpose for anyone if you're not watching live so probably when it's all done I'll just hide it because I mean no one's going to watch this and like go through the trouble of syncing it up with the live stream it's fine this is just a excuse for me to clue in on exactly what's going on in the uh iPhone ecosystem now that I'm independent you know like I I feel like I can do this a little bit like there's more reason for me to do this I don't have to be so locked into the Android thing I would love to get more um more iOS uh experience and more competency around that I like that app that thought was good NSX La thank you I appreciate your support since the HTC Hero bang bang nice well I appreciate your support NSX La I really do dang really I mean it's a shame it it really is a shame because at the end of the day what they're doing is uh would would you know they would have a fair use argument on that and it's not like apple like it's just it's just the level of control that feels unnecessary to me but I guess when you're when you're a company you know especially a company like apple you have to protect your IP otherwise you kind of lose it so they yeah it's just dumb I think I wouldn't do that if I owned Apple yeah Lee double tap the power button it opens the camera I I do that all the time that's that's usually how I launch the camera I rarely ever tap the button it's just um oh but squeeze for Zoom would be weird like if you go too far in how do you squeeze out like yeah I don't know that that would be the level I don't I don't think there's enough control in in that two terabytes dude offload that footage get it off there man I mean I guess if you're shooting 4K I mean it adds up but my goodness yeah that's how I feel J joall 2000 there is extra context being offered you know it's it's not just a straight restream I don't know well but that's what the cloud is for dude like you don't need to always how many times in the course of a single year do you pull up your prek photos of your kid like one time maybe so like you know what I mean like upload the old stuff get it in the cloud I know I know I get it man I know you're proud and you have every right to be proud you should be proud that's interesting I would love to play around with that what was that feature called audio was it audio modes or something I got a little fomo on that I would love to have that so Studio mics is that what the name of that feature oh man yeah both of both of those things sound really interesting to me um yeah background hiss has just appeared on my stream yeah that's right o doctor all we used was an iPhone and a $3 million set and probably a staff of 20 oh well huh yeah I'm not hearing it it doesn't sound like noisy in the room those shots look really good but I mean they are in such a controlled environment for [Music] take effect welcome says this iPhone upgrade is a joke it's a phone and not a pro camera well I mean yeah it's a phone and it also has some really cool camera features I don't know I don't know I say do it why not and there are people who will use this to do make great things I mean the proof is proof is in the pudding sorry you might hear dogs in the background sorry I muted there for a second um yeah you hear thank you sorry about that um you will hear some background noise because you know this is a house there's no door right there so should be back now I I had muted apologies $1,000 off trade in for an iPhone 13 anyone no no definitely not back to Tim for final thoughts come on give us that surprise foldable that we've been waiting for not going to happen there is no rumor of that by the way isn't that always the case OD docta stretched out presentation stretch it out it's a nice looking watch yeah I hear you also what's up oza nightmare good to have you here oh totally flowery adjectives it's a really great way to put it yeah I mean at the end of the day these these announcements are you know it's basically just just a very long advertisement it's a long advertisement that you know they that they build some excitement around watching collectively that's really what it is because I mean from a news perspective like you know people who are reporting on this news got this information well in advance they're going to you know publish the news the second this happens so if they haven't already I haven't even check tech meme to see but yeah how necessary are these things I don't know I mean I guess it's just marketing man it gets an Android guy to uh cover it or to at least open up a live stream and speak random thoughts about it that's a good way to put it on nerd soup for nerds yay okay and we have reached the end of the event um yeah there we go that's it uh so what are the things that stand out for me yeah I mean you know the camera button Tay says they invented the camera button that' be my takeaway you know Apple does that right they come out with something it's like it's not the first time you've ever seen it but the the way that they do it you know they convince people that it's that it's new and different and it's probably the case with the with the button but still I mean that doesn't mean that the button is a bad idea you know what I mean like I'm I'm curious to see like the whole example that they had of the weekend you know shooting the weekend um music video with that iPhone and using those controls like you have to imagine you you have to understand that you know that whole thing was coordinated with apple you know it's like hey we'll give you access to our new phone we'll I'm sure there was money that exchanged hands I don't know any details but I'm sure there was almost certainly you know so so how if if you were to find yourself in a conversation with one of those people you know like out of I don't know hanging out with someone oneon-one and you got the real off the Record scoop like I would ask them like okay the camera controls are neat and I know that you used it and I know that you said in the the video thing that it was really useful but like how does it stack up to True professional controls that you would use otherwise like is it really fine is it a fine tooth comb enough you know what I mean like I watched him using it and like I've you know it's such a small narrow space that either either Apple has done some really great engineering ing around that control to make it so that you don't overshoot your target like I'm like I'm doing this cast this this uh live stream through the osmo pocket 3 which is a new device I got not not too long ago absolutely love it I'm using it as a webcam right now thankfully it didn't do what it did last time and like kill out of after like 10 minutes um but it has you know the pretty pretty small screen touchcreen that you maneuver almost all the settings through and it has that kind of like scroll re wheel interface on the screen to you know dial in your exposure and and and all that kind of stuff and but it's a very narrow space and actually looking at the screen right now it's probably pretty close to the distance that um you know the amount of space that that multi-function button has it's very easy to overshoot the thing and so you spend like I when I use it you know I either get it right the first time or I overshoot it and then try and correct and I overshoot it in the other way and you know that's a little frustrating and in a professional environment you're shooting a music video with the weekend I have to imagine you know if they didn't nail that down just right then those people you know they're getting paid to to do this thing so of course it's going to be beautiful and and yay but like how would they uh how do how do they really feel and I and obviously like I won't know that until you know perhaps someday I get one of these phones in my hand and I can play around with that but I do think that's neat I like the the idea of a multifunction button it's not the first time we've seen it um but you know some of that interaction seems different than what we have seen uh before that I'm aware of anyways so ozone nightmare always so gracious thank you so much for the super thanks man uh says to a degree that's what irks me the most about these events they show the things uh these scarios as if a typical user would do it without showing the logistics involved normal user isn't getting those results that is very true and you know they they showed well like I keep going back to the weekend example it's not like when you're watching it you don't see that there's a bunch of staff there they show that they're not they're not trying to deceive you and say you can easily shoot a a the weekend music video because anyone looking at that is going to see all the lights and see all the staff and see the fact that there's a multi-million dollar you know musician there and everything like of course that's going to look better than the the video that a random person picks up at the same time it was shot with that phone I mean unless unless Apple's totally being um you know totally lying about it so their promise is true it's capable of doing that it's just there's a lot of other steps that go into it that that someone needs to put into place in order to have that kind of quality but it is possible they're not lying um OA nightmare says on the other hand at least they're not taking more buttons away like the rumors suggested for the last few years yeah xiaom xiaomi by the way has a a buttonless phone that is uh on the horizon I just don't know how I feel about that like don't uh and that could be old old school thinking but this is not the first time we've heard about this this has been the rumor for years that Apple at some point is going to take all the buttons away that was more of a Steve Steve jobian thing and I think that that is obviously not the case because they just added another button it's just yeah so anyways so I don't know I don't feel like apple is deceitful when they when they show things like that I as a as a viewer watch that and and maybe I'm just more clued into this because I work in production but I see I do see the other elements that factor into that wonderful looking video so I don't know it's comforting to know that when they say it's capable of it it actually is like I said unless they're being deceitful which I highly doubt if that were the case that would come out and I don't think it's going to so glow what is this glow uh feature I don't really know what is this glow I don't really know okay so there was the multi-function button that was uh interesting to me the AI tools I think uh Apple intelligence um being an integrated piece of the phone would love to kind of see how that integration Stacks up and compares to something like you know Gemini on the um on the pixel on the pixel 9 pixel9 of course has Gemini in as an app and then you know some of the other apps so it's almost like Google's taking the app per app approach going to Gmail Gmail has this new feature or messages has this new feature or photos has this new feature and my understanding is what apple is saying is iOS has these new features and they feed into all of our things so maybe it's just semantics or maybe because Apple controls the ecosystem on a deeper level they can do that and I don't know I mean I I actually think that maybe there's you know again it has its downsides to have that locked in ecosystem but it also has its upsides it makes things a lot simpler for the user and so and when we're talking about the Myriad use cases of artificial intelligence on mobile devices is like my fear my concern with Google's approach is that we're going to end up in another situation if we haven't already where we did with assistant and um assistant's kind of expanded feature set where when it launched it did a few things did them pretty well I remember assistant coming out of the gate we were pretty impressed by it but we could also see like oh but you know it' be nice if it did this or it would be really neat if it did that and blah blah blah and as Google uh added all of these features it quickly went in the opposite direction where it was like okay there's so much here that I couldn't even possibly begin to like keep it all organized or know how to fire it off or anything like that it gets almost too complicated like it gets so capable that you then have to remember how capable it is in order to make use of any of it and um you know and so Google's going the per app route which I think kind of falls in the same trap where it's like I got to remember when I'm using Gmail that it has that AI feature or messages has a different but similar AI feature that's embedded there versus Apple's approach which is just summon it and whatever app you're using here's your AI feature set that feeds into it and um I know I think there's something to that I'd be curious to see how that how that plays from um an experiential standpoint and hopefully I get two uh probably not with the iPhone 13 that I have now that it's now officially three years old uh in in a single day this thing went from oh it's only a couple of years old to three years old but uh but nonetheless I'm happy that I have it and maybe some of these features will hit that but I doubt it who knows maybe I get traded in um other features oh and and so just a kind of button up on the AI tool set that you know largely what Apple was showing off that comes to mind um is very much similar to what everyone else is doing it's the writing you know writing for you it's the summarizing I did like that when you're looking at your inbox instead of seeing the first like 10 or 12 or 15 words of the email that's there it gives you like a short summary um given that the summary isn't more work well I guess how how much more work would it be than trying to figure out what an entire email is about based on the first couple of sentences you know so anyways I think that's I think that's a cool idea because then it gives you the ability to glance uh quicker as long as it doesn't get flowery you know the the language doesn't get flowery and unnecessary like if it's a true summary just give me the Nugget so that when I'm scanning through my my inbox I I can know exactly what it is without too much work excuse me they called it a new era for Siri and um having not had much personal experience with Siri I can't really draw from you know perspective there but I mean from what I've heard from a lot of people about Siri is that it hasn't been incredibly helpful throughout the years that it's definitely been behind and uh yeah I'm curious to see if these AI features that are making their way into the iPhone and into kind of a more capable enhanced version of Siri um if Apple gets it right this time you know can kind of undo some of that baggage people may have already made up their mind that they don't want to use Siri because it didn't work for them time and time again or does this you know kind of erase the slate and kind of have a do over as a result some of those features coming in beta next month so we're still kind of you know still not immediate you know Apple has taken a slow approach with AI it's announced a few things and then had to kind of slow things down uh based on you know wanting to get it right and you should especially with AI features get it right out of the gate so not surprised about that other things that uh that caught my attention were the um were the audio mode so obviously there's the you know we already kind of talked a little bit about the camera uh and video capabilities and whatever but the thing is of course cuz I am you know I'm a musician and uh Apple actually does bake into their OS features that musicians would like like I think that's actually kind of cool like on Android I have to go out of my way to find apps that actually cater to the weird unique feature set or you know like a requests list that I might have as a musician that wants to use my smartphone as like a a song kind of um uh song creation device or not even song creation but you know a way to kind of log um ideas that I have and that sort of stuff you know the app that I use to do that on my phone is uh by Dolby it's called Dolby on and um you know which I mean it's not a big deal it's it's basically a voice recording or a recording app um that I can record on the fly if I have an idea for something I just open it up I record it I label it and then I have it stored you know in a compressed format or MP3 or whatever and so I use that a lot for random ideas you know that come to me but what they showed off was in particular um was a voice memos feature that allows for layering like quick layering uh so so essentially the idea is I'm a musician I have the idea for this song on guitar so I sit down and I record it in my voice memo app and then I'm making lunch and I'm listening to it and I'm like auditioning with my voice I'm recording a second layer on top of it that is like oh I've got this idea for a vocal Melody to go on top of it or whatever so then I could just hit record it plays the guitar out into the room while I'm recording while I'm singing and so then it records the voice and then there you know their software their algorithms can remove from the voice recording or you can actually you can adjust the balance to say you know have it mixed with the guitar the original guitar track or remove the guitar track alt together which is interesting because the guitar track was being played into the room while I'm singing it and recording it with the same phone so there viously you know doing some um probably phase cancellation to get rid of the uh the guitar so I wonder how clean that is that is one my one consideration but I don't think like for me I wouldn't be using that feature to create like studio quality throw that into my dah and you know release it sort of stuff I'd be using that feature for prototyping and for you know on thefly coming up with ideas I wonder if you can continue to stack like because here here's my specific use case is I come up with an idea this happens all to me all the time I'll come up with an idea I'll kind of sing it out or I'll play it out or whatever with a guitar and then I don't just I don't always just have a single vocal line in mind I often have like a um a chord of vocals like you know so layers of vocals so it's like I want my first I want the first layer to be this and then over the top of that I want the second layer to be this you know and like if I had a true multi-tracking environment that would be pretty easy and straightforward to kind of record that to but when I'm on the go I don't always have that but I might want to try it out and this that feature I realized it's super like isolated to very specific group of people of all the people watching right now maybe like 10% of you are like yeah that sounds pretty rad um but that is a feature that I would be like all over i' probably use that all the time and uh yeah it makes me think like okay with Dolby um with the uh Dolby on app that seems like something that Dolby could potentially roll into their app and make that even more useful I would love that so anyways and then they have their Studio mics thing where they're recording in an environment and they have different algorithms uh to almost remix the audio so they were the example that they had was the the C the diner scene and the two guys sitting at the the counter and talking in this noisy Diner or whatever and you could remix things and um you know that's uh that's cool neat that it can do that kind of reminds me of the audio element of like what they did with the with Studio Lighting on the the camera and video and stuff like that so that's neat um I would hesitate to go too heavy on that like that is a feature that I would love to test out that and the voice memos one so if I if I do end up getting one of these phones those would be things that I would actually create content around um specifically just to make my heart Happy um because it would be a lot of fun but um I I would I would probably be cautious about that feature because the the um the the thought okay so let me back up adobe has a feature integrated into Premiere and audition and I think actually you can do this on the web possibly for free where you load in a piece of audio that let's say it's just a voice recording in a noisy environment with my phone right I can upload that wave file or integrate it or or bring it into Premiere or Edition and then it scans it and it can isolate it knows you know with its AI training and the algorithm how to isolate just the voice and block out everything else and if you go um if you go too far on that because the the the uh the appeal is oh well then I want to get rid of all the extra noise and when you do that it's really interesting I've done that with a couple of videos and then matched it up with the actual video you know so one of them was my daughter's uh Girl Scouts she had a girl scouts video that she we sent out to everyone you know for her asking for um people who wanted to buy cookies and uh and I recorded it with my phone and then I was able to take it in there and eliminate the background and it's almost like it works better maybe if you're just listening to it but when you're listening to it and you see the video it felt very artificial and actually I saw a recent example of this yeah you end up sounding really strange when you push it too far um even though that that ends up being kind of you're tempted that's the word I'm looking for you're tempted to push it too super far because you're like well why wouldn't I just want to go you know and and isolate completely and if you do it starts to sound really um really artificial even though it it's done what it promised it's cleared up the noise and things just sound weird and there was a there's a recent example of this and I'm almost I don't know any of the backstory but I'm almost positive that this is what happened I could be completely wrong and I probably am but uh vice president kamla Harris shortly after she announced uh that she was running or or you know that whole uh Biden stepping out her coming in and you know we started to see the kind of ramp up of of publicity around that there was a video on YouTube of her talking to the camera um and I think you know probably asking for donations or whatever and I'm almost positive that they didn't use a very good mic in that situation because the audio quality coming from her really mashed up with what I heard from my daughter and her Girl Scout thing and it felt really artificial it almost felt like it I mean because it is it's an AI teach and so it ends up it ended up kind of making the video feel a little bit less authentic or and maybe no one else noticed that maybe like 90% of people were like I don't even know what you're talking about but it's almost like once you know you know and I heard that and I probably saw that ad five times over the course of like three days every time I was like God that's weird like did what did they mess up like they must have messed something up and they had to go with that and sure enough they removed that ad and they replaced it with another one that was very similar to it but it had better audio and it was a re-shoot and it was done differently so like there's a part of me that's like oh they you know they didn't do the audio right and they ended up leaning into this feature and you know even if people don't notice those things I think they do on a subconscious level and so it's a long way of saying that feature I'd be curious to test it out and see if it kind of does the same thing because you'd be tempted as a user you'd probably be tempted to just go extreme with it and you might not want to so anyways uh Hagar 84 thank you so much for the super thanks um God y'all have been a new SE model honestly I'm not but only because I don't normally cover Apple stuff and so I'm a little less dialed into the Norms of what Apple does does Apple normally release or announce an SE along with their big sweeping uh announcements and you know did they last year and this is the first year that they didn't then I guess I would have been um you know surprised by that but I'm not right off the top yeah lawn do says Jason I thought I saw an $800 tradein value for a phone that cost like $799 does that makes sense to you no but no that doesn't make sense but that sounds pretty awesome now I'm curious all right so now I got to open up an apple window because let's see here iPhone 16 okay so I guess I can I guess I can present this I think and I'm only doing this because uh for th you know I I I explained it earlier and um for those who who weren't here oh it said up to $800 yeah Phyllis that makes that makes more sense but let's let's go ahead and see I've got I've got an idea here because uh for those who who didn't hear me explain this earlier I do have an iPhone now which I've never really had one before this is my first my iPhone it's not a new one I mean I mean it is new but it's not a new release it's an iPhone 13 so you know it's pretty minimal my younger daughter she doesn't realize this but at some point she's going to get this phone um but we switched from mintmobile to T-Mobile to get a better family plan and also to get some new devices cuz my older daughter wanted the wanted a new iPhone and uh it just it just made sense but when we did it they were like well you can get an iPhone 13 for free you just have to pay tax and I was like well okay because just tax so because I need to have like an iOS I'm feeling like at this point I need to have an iOS device uh in my in my catalog um of of phones so that you know as certain things come up I have an a device to actually test it on and who knows maybe I'll get a new one but the thought was okay well what is trading value for an iPhone 13 on one of these new devices so why don't we go ahead and see can I actually do pre-order okay so so we got iPhone 16 let's just stick to the 16 here learn more all right so we got the 16 Hello app intelligence from 799 starting September 20th okay so we're just going to stick to the basics 16 teal we're going to go low low low Stow low storage okay Apple trading this is what I wanted to see iPhone 13 okay so it's not that much yeah it's in good condition so if I was to get the new one I would have to pay 549 after trade in oh I see you pay up front you have to pay the $799 up front and then you get some sort of what reimbursement do you get a cash reimbursement how does that work yeah probably 549 after no that would have to be after trade in 549 uh so if you were doing it more unlocked you had to uh unlocked you have to pay more so it' be 579 if I wanted to do unlocked yeah well that's not happening I wish I was made of money let me tell you I am not made of money definitely not right now yeah maybe someday I don't know and I don't think Apple really does the the um review you know review laner devices uh particularly for someone of my uh kind of my stature at this point in time in the world of tech media production so we'll see I don't know um but I would love to or you know I know I know some people you know buy buy these phones temporarily to play with them and kind of do their stuff and then send them back and I don't know something about that feels a little weird to me but it is but is a possibility you know you got to you got to do what you got to do I suppose especially when you're especially when you're a little guy like me anywho all right well it's been almost two hours I apologize for the weirdness at the beginning I know some of you tuned into my initial live stream I'd put it out on socials and uh you know promptly 7 minutes into the event it got removed now I have a YouTube Q&A which if you've never seen one of these I could show you real quick um I I now have to uh take a test basically I'm on question three of seven and I basically have to go through and uh you know allow apple and YouTube to slap my hand say don't do that um so I'll do that it'll take me five five seconds probably but I'm not going to do it right now because I've done plenty of things while live stream is running and totally messed it up like the two Factor thing on this weeking Google so whatever yeah it's it's dumb that I can't you know that that we can't um um have the live stream of what is effectively a marketing video and uh comment on it you know and do actual coverage and thoughts and and all that kind of stuff with it but is the way of the media world the media landscape and of all companies that are you know going going to the mat on it apple is definitely one of the one of the biggies they are they don't seem to want to kind of let that slide anymore there may have been a time but it's definitely not now um oh so that's interesting so la dog says I did see someone doing a rebroadcast at the event but it was interesting he only had about 30% of the event in a window and the rest was looking at his desk audio equipment uh yeah I did actually wonder about that like what if I like scrolled yeah but then but what about the Audio I mean would the audio pick it up too I don't know it's just not worth it like I I don't have a a a uh what I don't have a a ding or a Mark or whatever they call it in YouTube yet I have it's like a warning I basically got a warning and uh basically said do this again in the next 90 days this exact thing in the next 90 days and you will get a strike um you know but there's still a little bit of like Loosey Goosey equality to that like I've done live coverage of Samsung events but what if Samsung then later decided like on their next event like well we've decided this time we're going to get you know you know get uh more strict about it so I'm kind of taking a chance and I don't want to get a strike definitely not so uh so anyways I mean this worked right like if you wanted to listen along you just all you had to do was open the live stream in a separate window and turn the volume to whatever you want to set it to yeah NSX La I just forgot I'm a little I'm I'm sure you can see it in my eyes I'm a little tired from this weekend I worked an insane amount this weekend um you know it was a it was a whole weekend kind of retreat thing and I was in the kitchen with a pretty small staff feeding I think in the end we fed a total of yeah somewhere 70 some odd people guys 70 some odd guys and they were all very hungry and uh yeah so you know it took a lot of energy and I'm uh definitely feeling it get another early night in bed tonight but anywh who it's 12:10 I'm going to end the stream I got to eat some lunch and uh got other things to do uh but thank you so much for being here everybody thank you for the amazing uh
