How Rams' QB room looks with Matthew Stafford, Stetson Bennett | Pro Football Talk | NFL on NBC

I'm not concerned I'm not um you know I think Gary um you know one of the things that's great is he's accumulated all this experience um he's going to be ready to go and to prepare against Detroit and if we miss a couple days this week if that's the approach that we take on the safer side he'll still have a you know a couple you know two and a half weeks of preparation for Detroit sha McVey talking about the hamstring injury that has sidelined Matthew Stafford I mean the thing about St when he's injured you usually don't know so when you know he's injured it's not something small if it was something small he would just power through it and wouldn't say a word to anybody that's the way he's always been so hamstring soft tissue takes time older you are sometimes the longer it takes I'd be a little concerned I'd be a little concerned you got two weeks and six days to get this guy ready to go and you don't want him to aggravate it at any point along the way and anybody's had a hamstring injury knows if you come back before it's ready you take that one step and it grabs and it sets you back so I think it's definitely something to be concerned about it's all the more reason to be concerned we know Jimmy Garoppolo is not going to be there for week one and week two and they're still not 100% sure not even close to 100% sure they can trust STS and Bennett to be the backup yeah it's it is concerning Stafford's awesome we know that there's no doubt he's one of the seven or eight best quarterbacks in football uh they're a team that's like by allo accounts pretty legit not going to say they're a top Super Bowl Contender but one of those teams that we put on the list in the NFC that could do that and yeah he's been beat up a lot through his career hopefully this is one where yeah I I'll take Shawn mcv's word it's not real serious they're going to be safe rather than sorry and they know like what you're saying hey he is older and we know this is a soft tissue could be a very dangerous type of injury that lingers forever if we don't handle it the right way McVey is usually very good at resting his guys that way so yeah that's big and it's big I think when you couple that on to the current situation like I know ston Bennett okay yeah they won the game and he threw a game winning touchdown pass late there's no way you can go into week one as St and Bennett as your backup they're crazy if they do I'll just say it six turnovers in two preseason games he's playing against the majority of the day threes like the number three defense that's ugly that interception is ugly if I threw six if I had six turnovers in the preseason first two preseason games with John guden he would have taped me up and me off somewhere with FedEx overnight and said get the hell out of here I don't want you in my quarterback room anymore like that's insane so that's to me where yeah they they better think of something or keep their eye out on you know some guys that maybe they think could get released here at the end of training camp because I wouldn't feel comfortable with oh the lions that crowd how f fired up they're going to be o our quarterback's a little older and he's coming with an injury and we're going to throw ston Bennett out in that environment when the number ones not the you know twos and threes like he's had the first two games that would yeah scare the hell out of me Mike okay now you pushed back on me a little bit last segment I'm going to push back on you how dare you because well because thank you because why would Shawn McVey tell the truth about being concerned about Matthew Stafford if he's his pants sorry London trying to figure out who who his quarterback's going to be week one my my starters hamstring is messed up I can't trust dson Bennett Jimmy Garoppo's going to be suspended for violating the PED policy I got to find somebody and if these teams that currently have 90 guys on the roster and try to figure out what they're going to do with qb4 think that they can maybe get me to give them a sixth round draft pick I want that guy to be cut I don't want that guy to be trade bab I don't want people to know I'm because I don't know what the hell I'm going to do week one and I can't trust ston Bennett so even if Matthew Stafford's hamstring was messed up to the point where they're concerned about week one they're never going to admit it now because they don't trust their backup quarterback for week one and two yeah you're probably right I I I I would say you're right about that there's no doubt so good job pushing back against me there then thank you for that but yeah you're right you're logic that's the thing we see that all the time we see that all the time and and one of the things I loved about the offseason Hard Knocks there was a session where Joe Shane the GM was meeting with someone from PR and they they came up with what they were going to tell people about sequan Barkley they knew what they were going to do with saquon Barkley but they had to come up with what they were going to tell the world there's always a potential disconnect between what they say and what they think and here there's no competitive advantage in saying yeah Matthews a little banged up uh we're going to have some work to do to get him ready to go week one no they're they're not but they're they're going to have to certainly kick around all possibilities as far as who they could bring in or what might happen uh I just again a guy like Shawn McVey who's coached under Shanahan and John guden I I can't imagine him feeling real warm and cozy right now watching the film uh today o of that game going well yeah I mean yeah if Stafford you know hurts his ankle in the second quarter uh we'll be okay with ston Bennett up in Detroit with those crazy F freaks of nature up there in that game like negative Ghost Rider the pattern is full on that one and they they better think of a plan B bring John Wolford the guy that looks like Ed shearan he's currently on the Buccaneers roster that's the guy hey that's the guy they benched Jared gof for wouldn't that be great I mean we've got already the story lines of Stafford going back to Detroit what if the Rams go back with the guy that they put on the field when they decided they'd had enough of Jared gof so uh again not currently under contract with the Rams a guy they'd have to finagle and they may be putting a plan in place to try to do that if they aren't comfortable with STS and Bennett okay you have a chance to win $1 million in the NBC sweep
