for Lane kein program on the horizon we're previewing predicting breaking down the season opener and helping me do so my good friend Dave shoemate joins me once again Dave what's going on my man I appreciate you taking the time CP what's going on baby yeah I mean I the red fans hadn't been this fired up in the city of Oxford as probably Eli Manning came back but again I don't think they had National Championship aspirations that's more just hoping to win the SEC West this it it me and you've talked about it before it really feels like playoff or bus for Old Miss in 2024 Dave when you look at what they've added and you say playoff or bust maybe winning a playoff game bu it seemed like with each piece that Old Miss added over the course of the offseason when it came to answer portal the expectations ratchet it up and Ratchet it up and for good reason I mean they added basically it feels like an Allstar team and again it all comes to a head as tow meets leather in this game Old Miss taking on Ferman Dave let's dive into it again of course kickoff Saturday octob or August the 31st excuse me a 7 PM Eastern kick at V Hemingway in Oxford this game being streamed on espion Plus or SEC network plus Old Miss is a 42 and a half point favorite the over under set at 60 and a half I got to admit Dave I thought it would be more I was surprised that the spread was only 42 and a half more on that in just a second Dave funny side note on this Ferman leads the alltime series one to nothing who can forget that classic back in 19 bu board material for Lane kein and the boys it's bul board material gotta hey 1924 the paladins won the game seven to2 Dave my bold prediction there will be more than nine combined points scored in this edition of this game I believe um Dave when you take a look at Ferman FCS Squad but a really proud program this is a program year in year out you see them in the playoffs making runs they went 10 and three last year seven- one in conference Play Lost to Montana in the FCS quarterfinals and what was really a classic game a game that I actually watched uh they did take on Dave a sec foe a season ago went to Williams price Stadium played the South kinda game c I don't know if you recall that game was interesting early it really was and again South Carolina not a great team last year but still that game was really interesting early FM in a program they will not go into Oxford intimidated again really proud history tradition great coaching staff they do return two allconference players and defensive end Luke Clark and kicker Ian Williams but they lost a lot Dave they're starting quarterback they're top running back four offensive linemen from the 2023 Squad they do return their top three in receiving yards in regards to leaders at the wide receiver position those guys are back and then defensively four their top 15 tacklers from 2023 return on defense Evan demaggio Luke Clark I named just a couple leaders on that side of the football lost their top six defensive backs three corners and three safeties Dave you gotta think Lane kein he knows that he's licking his chops as his Jackson Dart that entire offense but the paladins again Dave when you look at this matchup ranked ninth in the preseason of the FCS coaches poll top 25 I'm not trying to gas up Ferman from the standpoint Dave that I think they could go in and pull the upset but you know this is not your run-ofthe-mill FCS program this is a top 10 FCS program they'll come in fired up excited for the opportunity what happens beyond that we'll see but Ferman one of the most proud programs in FCS no me you're right this isn't and this is and taking a shot at the fighting Pine Bluffs here but this is this is Arkansas Pine Bluff like you said Ferman knows how to win games teams at their level it's kind of like for Tennessee when we previewed the Tennessee game UT Chattanooga like they're a respectable FCS team again I don't want to take it too far you probably could roll the balls out and win it may not be pretty but you could win but I mean like you said furman's gonna be playing with a chip on their shoulder at least for the first quarter until they take some blows and then probably that's when uh the dam starts to break a little bit and just the flash floods come in that's when you have probably juice Wells is healthy still they give him some run he's gon some big yards I would assume Trey Harris maybe Jordan Watkins ulys Bley gets involved Kaden PRI corner but this is a chance for Old Miss in my opinion I I like their competitive depth they built it up always talk about it from a Personnel guy or a Personnel perspective Personnel guys perspective it's not about your starting 22 it's about your top 40 and that's never been true or now with us add a 12 team playoff adding more games I think this gives Old Miss a chance to work out the Kinks on some of those backend kind of like depth guys because I think they have built that up especially on the offensive line I mean I haven't seen the depth on Old Miss offensive line like this in my lifetime I mean you bring in Diego pounds from North Carolina and a left tackles but Jeremy James who I think started for three straight years or played every I think position on the offensive line except Center is just trying to find a starting spot they brought in Nate cppo from Washington uh Julius blue is over there coming over from Washington on defense mean we know about Walter Nolan we know but like so xaven Harris kind of had a was a a bit nicked up how about Chris Hardy kind of an undersized outside linebacker oh miss BR on late probably not a starter but could contribute as maybe a designated pass rusher someone like that he's a little undiz coming from Jack State want to see him Warren ke coming from Oklahoma on the back end y Banks a kid they added late from South Alabama those kind of guys like hey let's see these guys that are gonna be playing majority of this game how do they how do they start getting more comfortable and actually live game runs I think that would be key if I'm Lane kein if I'm Pete golden kind of from that perspective to get some run for my def guys because at some point we're going to need these guys to step up and play with us inevitably and to your point Dave with all due respect to Ferman this game is all about Old Miss right you mentioned the pieces and and the last dance as they're calling it there in Oxford officially Begins for Old Miss Dave I'll jump to you and I know you just rattled off some things here but Old Miss is going to win this football game but and and we know about old Miss's schedule the first four or five weeks or so it's not exactly intimidating if you will it's not by it's not if Old Miss is going to win it's by how much they're going to win each game who shines who flashes in a season opener like this where there's so much hype there's so much anticipation you know I've mentioned before Dave I have some concerns about Lane kein getting this team honestly fired up to play it's not like you know week one Georgia Clemson where you know you've got a really formidable opponent to to get ready for you know in the season opener don't think that'll be an issue but when you look at Old Miss when you watch this game Dave What specifically do you want to see from this group is it the pieces that you picked up over the offseason meshing is it Jackson Dart is it that line you talked about like is there anything specifically is it fundamentals like what are you looking for from this game a game in which Old Miss is gonna win but you know as well as I do Dave look at Georgia last year I think what's interesting about this is when you're being judged as such a high standard you're not just being judged did you win the game did you win it by a couple touchdowns whatever you're being judged they're going to be judged from week one is this Old Miss team good enough to win a National Championship that's what they're going to be judged against all year and games like this the way you look will matter so Dave with that being said What specifically are you looking for from the rebels in this one specifically in this one initially like I mentioned earli probably just competitive depth who's stepping up on the back end and really I mean I would like to see how they use certain guys and he changed his name I was try to um oh yeah TJ doy former TJ bull Dudley a guy that's kind of like an inside backer they may line him up on the edge as a third down pass rusher again just really these depth guys and especially for getting real particular on defense that's what I really want to see again I didn't mention him earlier but a k Stone Xavier Harris they've both been on the roster how did they utilize Centurian Perkins he's a little bit like Harold Perkins in LSU where the athleticism and just overall ability is just off the charge I mean he Stacks up there with the best of them how do they utilize him at the inside Lineback it's very similar to how Harold Perkins is coincidentally they both had the same last name but like how does Pete golden use how does Pete use this these weapons because he kind of has some people I mean I've heard TJ doter he he can rush the passer he does a good job for that how does he fit some of these guys in these specific roles I mean I think offensively they're gonna go kind of do them this first this first week or yeah this first week against Ferman again I'm more interested in the depth on defense I know I keep saying that but I think that is really going to determine how far Miss can go away past this game and we're talking about into the months of December and January and that's their expectations this year and for them to reach those goals they're gonna have to have some guys they're gonna have to have probably their top not top 11 it's gonna have to be anywhere from top 15 to top 18 to 20 to step up so I'm interested to see who those top 20 players on defense are for missing you should get a lot of uh you should be able to see them a lot because I think they should be able to handle this at least heading into the second half of this game exper yeah Dave when you look at this game I'm just excited to see all the new pieces honestly you know we talk about are they gonna mesh I don't know that you get that answer week one against F I don't know that you get that answer until you run into into some adversity South Carolina just I mean it is a league Road game I'm not just gonna immediately throw that out but you know what I mean it just it's it's gonna take some adversity I think Dave to really show that I think we both agree but just honestly getting our first Glimpse at juice Wells in an Old Miss uniform Walter Nolan P Paul Jr Trey Amos the offensive line guys you mentioned I mean the list just goes on and on I'm excited to see too offensively what does it look like in regards to Distributing the football I mean again they should be able to score a ton of points and everybody should be able to get fed if you will we'll call it that everybody should be able to get theirs in a game like this but um also the running back room you know ulyses Bentley you had the kid forgive me forget forgetting his name the kid that transferred him back from Miami was it Parish I believe hry Parish Henry Parish back like kind of what is the what is life after Quin I think we forget too I think we forget too CP you remember Logan Diggs that was at Notre LSU he's hurt they they're hoping to have him for the back half of the year which could be kind of a blessing in disguise from a depth standpoint you get a guy that have much run on the tires it's gonna essentially be starting his season on the back half that could be key too and it's gonna be an opportunity like you mentioned Dave depth is GNA be the key word here you know you you always love as you these head coaches they love to flex yeah we you know everybody played in this game we get every our oh yeah yeah we everybody got in this is going to be an opportunity for Old Miss to do that again show off the new pieces keep you guys healthy feeling good build early momentum and you're gonna have more than a couple opportunities to do that here in the first couple weeks but uh it should be a very very fun home debut for Old Miss that being said Dave let's go ahead and dive in the predictions because again I don't want to overt talk this one because this one's all about Old Miss like all due respect to Ferman really proud program I bet you Dave they're going to have a really good season at the FCS level but this is a different beast and when you look at this game you mentioned Depp this is an empty the bench game for Old Miss I think this is a name your score game you know it sounds silly and maybe disrespectful but we've seen it before Dave like I I have seen games like this before where Old Miss is up 42 to nothing in the second quarter I mean I just the way they play offense and now they've got the defense to complement it things could get out of hand in a hurry I I think I think we're going to see a lot of backups in the second half we're going to see that depth you talked about I I'd be almost surprised if Jackson Dart and a couple of the other starters took snaps in the second half maybe the first drive of the third quarter maybe um but I think llane keen's gonna have the opportunity to empty his bench name is score I I do think it's lopsided very very early in this one I think Old Miss will cruise to a big win I've got the rebels winning this game 63-13 Dave and I think that's again just a test Testament how in the world is old or Ferman excuse me going to stop all these weapons they're just not and you lost all the defensive backs from a season ago probably not going to be able to pressure the quarterback consistently it's it's going to be a field day for the rebels and so that that's why I said Dave I was surprised the spread was only 42 and a half because again the way Old Miss plays I mean unless they just really take the foot off the against but even old Mrs twos Dave you mentioned that even their twos are going to move the football up and down the field so I'm saying how bad this game is is probably going to be determined by how well the backup quarterbacks Austin Simmons and Walker Howard are playing I mean if you're going to win this B probably I mean I'm gonna go something 567 if you're making me guess right now something like that I think they're gonna want to try to come out and like impose their will on defense and kind of be like hey look I think everybody sucks them to be good on offense I think it's G to be hey if they come out and hold a solid FCS school like Ferman to seven points in your first game and a lot of that's done with your depth guys and like your starters aren't playing a lot in the second half if any that would be pretty impressive I know people would just look at the score be oh 567 but it's like man look who played I there's a lot of their twos back there kind of holding these guys in checks I think it'll be something like that 567 and Dave in closing I'm excited I mentioned that Georgia team last year I'm excited to see us and everybody else across the country and we can't help it I'm excited to see us overanalyze and nitpick everything that Old Miss does in this game and their first couple games of the season because I think we're so anxious to to learn about Lane kein team I mean you recall last year right with Georgia they were winning games by 40 but it was man the defensive line doesn't look quite as good as normal and it's like they're literally winning games 49 to10 but you know you gota the devils in the details right so I'm excited to see how we kind of nitpick these and but again should be a really really fun start to the 2024 season for hotti totty but guys what do you think
