Mike Norvell on offseason work | Florida State booster tour | FSU Football | #FSU

can we start with the the offseason workouts just how how it's going oh I mean everything's going really well I mean you just finished on Friday finished our first phase of the winter program uh now we'll make a transition to to phase two which is uh you know switch up rather than having just the Friday tour duties we know we go Tuesday Thursday mornings um you know I think for the first four uh weeks I mean you see a team that has really entered the offseason with a great purpose uh pushing extremely hard in a weight room uh nutritionally you know obviously what we've been able to do uh out on the field with those tour Duty workouts is it's been great I mean you know the workload is is uh increased alltime high that uh that we've had since we've been here uh you guys are are embracing the work you know we got 20 plus newcomers that have that have jumped in and doing a really good job excited about that group and what they're going to be able to to bring to the program and um you know it's things for where we are right now it's it's on track to what we're hope hoping need to be able to see and as we jump into the next week and and transition to phase two it's you know we got to have that same type of growth but uh you know I like the mindset of the guys why do you think you've seen the edge that you talked about or the better performance than you've had in previous ones I think it's um you know continue elevation within the program understanding the standard you know they you know guys are are hungry they want they want to go achieve more and then it's a when you talk about objective our program it's to get better and you know we had last year was a was a great run you know we had a you know it was a definitely a special year for some of the things that occurred but you know it didn't it didn't end the way we wanted and you know at the end of the day you know we have we have a football team with a lot of talented individuals um we've got a you know great young men great coaching staff I mean we want to to to to push for more and you know just to to go out there and maximize the opportunity that's ahead and um you know I haven't needed any motivational speeches you know these guys they they they understand the expectation and it's it's our job as coaches to help help show them the things that they can accomplish and the things they can do and uh I think we're seeing that in in all places not just in the weight room or not just on the field I mean that continue pushing the classroom that continued push you know socially um you know giv back even within the community I think you see our guys do a really good job of of making that impact around around Tallahassee and I'm I'm proud of them for that too are they hungrier because of sorry because of what happened last year I mean you know I think they're hungry for opportunity um you you can tie there's guys that are in our program that were not a part of it last year that you know they're bringing you know their element into it and um you know just just everybody wants to push to to continue to improve and so I think um you know what what happened a year ago I'm sure has you know we all have feelings about it but you know it's not going to do anything for this year's team you know other then just you know we have a chance to go and continue to get better and that's what that's what we're going to push towards mik you you obviously it's been over a month and a half since the the playoff stuff and being left out I mean do you do you still think about it does it still something you guys talk about and and when you're at these events what what do the fans kind of what do they say to you about that and what do they want what do you like to tell them about it well I mean it's uh you there's people you know whether you're going on the road recruiting every high school you go into somebody's going to probably you bring it up but you know it is it is what it was and you know I don't I don't get to control you know what happened you know but ultimately you know it's for this year for where we're going for what's what's ahead it's you know go be the best we can be and you I'm excited about this team that we have I'm excited about the guys that that we have within the program that are that are getting new opportunities and even you know you know bigger roles than than what maybe what they've had before and then the newcomers that are that are joining the program and and the element that they bring into it and it's um great group of young men and so that's our focus our focus is pouring into them uh we can't do anything about a year ago uh you know this will be our first you know stop on our tour uh for the boosters I'm sure I'll hear it a few times of everybody's feelings and you can have your feelings that doesn't you know I mean those players that are that finish their eligibility and are no longer U you know a part of the program they they're going to live with the you know those feelings for the rest of their life of what happened but U what we can do as a as a program is we can push to to make sure that we use you know every every experience and to be able to grow from each experience you know we didn't there's a lot of things that happened in the last four years nobody wanted to go through but they helped us you know as we have have you know continued to work to elevate the program because of some of those experiences so at the end of the day you know that's that's what our message is and what we have to try to go live out what was it about DJ that I guess you guys maybe didn't NE have to go after a quarterback and the transfer Portal had to be a good fit what was about him that made him someone worth attaining and going at well I I think it's you know the total package of who he is of the ability that he has the experiences that he's been through um you know I I really love our quarterback room you know I think you know Brock Glenn is is uh you know he got put a challenging situations there towards the end of last year uh you know Luke coming in as a true freshman I mean even in his first month yes we got we got a you know we haven't been out there on the practice Feld and all those things but I mean just the type of young man the type of work ethic um you know the the talent and ability that he has I'm I'm very excited about and you know DJ brings you know a a seasoned veteran that has been through it all and you know I think he's been through the highest he's played at an elite level at times in his career he has you know unbelievable potential um of what he within his skill set but you know he's got a humility a work ethic you know a great character um you know I I respect I've respected DJ you know from really my first time ever interacting with him was at ACC media day a few years back and you know I remember the the first thing he came up to me um and he asked me was he was he the spring where Winston Wright had gotten was in a car accident and he came up to me first thing he mentioned he was he asked me about Winston they did not have a previous relationship there was nothing there that would that tied them together he just he just heard the story and I remember finding coach wayy afterwards I was like man that is a real human being like for whatever he is as a player and all the things like that he just for him to care about something that he had seen and heard and wanting to to to ask and to have that type of uh uh you know just the sentiments to you what Winston was going through I mean it meant a lot to me and uh you know obviously the path of his of his career you know going to Oregon State you know we have a lot of connecting pieces uh with that coaching staff and you know coach Smith you know talked to him extensively um offensive coordinator uh coach l i mean those guys you know the hearing the the the experience they had with him this last year and just the the way that they spoke about him and you know I just I believe in him I believe in what he's what he can do I believe in the the the person that he brings into our program and uh you know obviously I'm excited to see him continue to to work and get better to hopefully have the best year of of his of his college career uh you know here at at FL State as you as you talk football with him I think Luke mentioned that he's really good on the grease board and you know is it more are you still in a process where you're still trying to figure out like what he likes or is it more showing him what you guys do how that proc it's always I mean every year um you know that'll be that'll be the for all the quarterbacks for you know for Brock for Luke I mean you obviously DJ and to see these guys come in and you know the things that they do really well and then you know some of the things that you know I think that helped complement what what the guys around them do really well there things you always want to evaluate but uh um you know one of the things DJ and I did on on his official visit you know we went through and watch three games just wanted to hear him talk I wanted to you know watch you know game that he played really really well a game that was you know kind of back and forth had had some good moments and some some plays and then you know one of the games were the most challenging and I just I love that was was kind of a stamp for me that said all right this is a guy that I I can absolutely coach and I believe that we can we can help but also that he he brings the right Dynamic and makeup of of you know what we're looking for and um and so it's going to be a little bit of all of it as we uh as we move forward and you know certain things I've got a pretty good sense that that he does well just from watching watching you know as much of them as we watched on them and then you the conversations but also uh you know if he didn't fit what we like to do or you know probably would have not not going that direction you like the accountability when you're watching the film you liked his accountability I like I mean I liked what he saw what he said you know the good and the bad um you know the you there's always plays in every game but you know even some of the things that he said them you know I think I can I can assist in growth and I say I I mean coach H car is our program this Florida State you General um and so it was it was more of building that just getting a sense of of where it is and how we feel that we can all you help each other can you share which three games those were I'm curious uh it was think Washington State um Oregon and Washington I believe is where the three the last time he was in the ACC he lost his starting job and I think when people saw that you signed him there's people who had those memories of what his time was like at Clemson so when you sat down and you talked to him and you watched the tape what did you see from Clemson and particularly last season that gave you the confidence and belief that he could be the best he could be with you guys this season oh I mean I you know it's really all of it it's the conversation is what I see on film it's you know his perspective you know I I see the ability and I think you know he is a he has tremendous ability he's got he's got a really good mind he's got uh he's been in some tough situations uh I don't I don't get too caught up on what other people's P perceptions of especially at quarterback CU we just lived it there plenty of people that didn't perceive Jordan Travis to be a great quarterback really glad that got the opportunity to to show that he was and uh you know so things happen and what I what I like about DJ's journey is that you know he's he had to go through it it's not it's not some of those some of those things that he that he had to work for were challenging and he responded went into a different and unique you situation kind of a totally different offense from what he had been in and I that's something that does excite me is there's there's elements in both of what he had done and what he did this past season um that I think we can marry up that our offense is kind of a mix of some some really good elements of both that I think he can he can be successful in so uh I'm excited to work with him I'm excited about what he brings and you know obviously where that can go what what Brock went through at the end of last year going you having to kind of being thrust into that role of going out there and playing what have you seen since the the orange bow that maybe kind of gives you kind some good feelings about his the direction he's going to go I was really proud of proud of Brock I mean even you know the the bowl game didn't go the way anybody wanted it to go but uh you you still even in his game you saw you saw progression you saw growth I mean he missed he missed you guys about at practice know I mean he missed a good part of the Season uh with an injury where he wasn't even able to practice so for a true freshman that missed some of that time during the year and then being thrust into that those in into those stages you know of what he had to do um I mean you saw you saw him get better and um you know I'm excited about um you know what he what he brings and you know obviously the uh um the confidence that he was able to gain even through some challenging situations like you people think you gain confidence only through the through the positive you can gain confidence in sometimes the adversity or or setbacks and um you know I thought that was all good for him and you he's just a great young man he's had a wonderful first month of of our offseason program even just our conversation after the game um because people don't realize you know even when you go back to the weight of some of the decisions uh you know CU we all heard a year ago of you know Jordan you know when he got hurt and then you know the selection and but there's some emotional things that go to when you're the guy that's that's one of the guys that's working to replace to replace him and potentially not being what people wanted there's a lot of part that you have to work through that and Brock was so me such a A's a great young man and I mean his the the the mental fortitude that he has just to be able to work through some of those things like it is I'm I'm excited for where his future can go just because the maturity that he has and the makeup that he brings and you know it's uh it's going to be fun you guys brought in a lot of speed um this off season was that by Design or is that just you guys are a place now where you can get those kinds of guys I mean I think it's a little combination I mean yes we we want we want explosive Playmakers and um you know I think we're able we're able to to focus on that uh you know in in certain you know couple different areas and uh you know it's definitely showed up I mean you see it in our workouts I mean we are we're fast and explosive team and I think there are some guys that uh are are going to really bring a different element to to the offense so I've liked what we've been able to do but you know it's one of the things we wanted to also continue to to grow upon and uh I I think when you look at the receiver room you know running backs I mean it's we got some real home run hitters that uh should be exciting to to watch play from the newcomer interviews we've heard Royale Williams name brought up a lot by by other teammates with guys came with him from Alabama or guys who've already been here I gu what about him this has stood out and he is a I mean great young man incredible hard hard worker you know to see talent and ability I mean the you know he had a had a lot of good film that he that he you know put on display last year um but you he's a he's a natural born leader um you he's and he's come in and handled the whole situation of you know being into a new being a part of a new team I mean he's handled that great I mean him and LT and you the backs kazia the got backs that have been here um you how they've kind of all melled gelled and meshed together um you know it's been impressive and you know but he is he's a talented you know good size running back that um I think's going to do some good things for us coach Atkins won't be coaching on the sidelines for three games do you apply for a waiver for Gabe how do you approach that yeah we'll go we'll go through I me we've got a preliminary process of things that uh that we'll do and we kind of get into more details of that as we get closer AZ and shy talked in the bowl game about trying to be more leaders this year step up and are you seeing that from them and other guys in that situation absolutely absolutely and you you see guys that you know F deciding to come back I mean was was also another big big part you look at those three guys in that secondary still have some other guys that I think are are good leaders but I mean that those are three you know really good football players that have made you know great plays for us that you know have an opportunity and um you know to see to see them embrace the role and and really try to push to uh you know be that example on a day in a day out basis and that's and I find them and try to be extremely hard on them you hear even throughout it because you know it's uh you know leadership is something that you had to prove prove through action and you those guys have have been a wonderful example for the first couple years but now they are taking another step so uh trying to provide opportunities for them to show how we want a response to show them you know to help bring along some of the newcomers that this is different for them and um with the accountability on all things I mean it's it's it's got to be put on display and when some of your best players Embrace that it just helps the transitional process for the other ones and so I've been really proud of those guys and just what they've done practice um does it logistically look differently because of construction like might be limited on Field Stadium yeah I mean well it's the stadiums is not going to be a a big difference um you obviously we'll have some barriers and things on the home side that um I mean there's going to be some elements of that but uh you know obious we do lose a field as construction is going on um so but we still have you know our full length you know grass field outside and then then the full indoor so we got plenty of field space uh to utilize but I mean that's going to be something that carries over into the season as well
