Alan Bowman Shines For Oklahoma State + West Virginia Gets THUMPED - The Big 12 Watch

Big 12 Football is back and there is a whole lot to get to from the weekend that was in the league as we had non-conference games for every single team in the conference this week what stood out winners losers and more coming your way this is the Big 12 watch I am Josh neighbors here on the Big 12 watch channel want to thank the folks at 365 Sports Paul Catalina and Company Craig smoke David smoke also Brian Ethridge as well for the confidence in me and went from Crystal Ball college football now to the Big 12 watch with Josh neighbors so I appreciate that and I hope to uh bring the the good word here content wise uh as we break down week number one also on Twitter SLX you all can find me Josh neighbors you can find the show at nwod 365 you guys can also find the show wherever you all get your podcasts and on YouTube as well all right so uh We've made it to week one made it past week one and the big takeaway is uh the conference kind of looks like what we thought it was going to look like I don't think there is anybody who was able to separate themselves just in one week I think that's kind of how it should be anyway but the biggest game of the weekend was West Virginia and Penn State obviously did not go well for the Big 12 but uh so I mean let's not start there let's go with something that was positive uh and you all know like I'm not you know cheerleader for the conference all the time and stuff like that like you know let's we cover the Big 12 so why not start with something positive for the Big 12 uh Oklahoma State 44 South Dakota State 20 and this game was one where look Oklahoma State comes in number 17 preseason they've got so much of the returning core coming back uh and everybody's really excited about what's gonna you know what they could have this year in Still Water my big question has been hey how much better can this team get and question was also will Allan Bowman get any better you know typically at somebody of his age right he is you know joke that he's 40 right but he is in his late 20s or mid 20s um but you know in his what seventh year of college football like is he going to get much better and he was really impressive in this game that was kind of the big story to me I me oi Gordon went 24 27 for 104 in two scores and as longest run of the day guys was 12 yards so South Dakota state did a great job bottling him up what I will say was that Alan Bowman really opened things up now they let the guys go go one-on-one on the edges Alan Bowman was 25 a 34 for 267 and three scores and uh I thought the downfield throwing was pretty good the touchdown to Rashad Owens was a really nice throw 58 yards to the house also dejon stribbling had a really good game oi Gordon had a good game out of the backfield Brennon Presley had a good game out of the back catching the football um so he was able to distribute the football to a bunch of different guys one thing I don't like though is he still goes off his back foot a decent amount he does need to work on that he cannot be doing that as much as he has been doing that so he needs to really work on you know stepping up and throwing setting his feet and going and uh he can still continue to do that I mean obviously like maybe at this point in time he might not be getting much better mechanically but I think we can all improve mechanically all the time with everything in life so hopefully he can he does do the backpedal sometimes and his arm is not necessarily strong enough to accommodate a backpedal like the way that he does sometimes so he's got to work on that but I thought uh Allan Bowman that's that's what it looks like you know going out there and trying to win a football game and a lot of teams are going to go out there and ask him to do it they're going to load the box but I thought they were very good in that category uh you know throwing the football on the day and I I thought you know the tape reflected that they weren't especially good on third down they were two for two on fourth down but in a game where the total yards were basically even between these two teams Oklahoma State wins by 24 points um you know it's because I think they had you know less penalties they didn't turn the ball over at all um and you know Alan Bowman was a huge part of that right and their defense too Oklahoma States got off the field they were three for 13 getting off the field on third down uh South Dakota state was 0 for four on fourth down as well so they did a good job in those categories and that's gonna be the big challenge excuse me for a lot of teams against oakl state is can you block uh guys like Nick Martin can you block Colin Oliver right I me we had a game here where Nick Martin had a sack and a tfl and a pass deflection and Colin Oliver had a sack and two tfls on the game and so can you keep those guys out of the back field is going to be a big challenge I'm interested to see next week now only two sacks it wasn't like they were getting after him but look South Dakota State man they had not lost a game since they lost s to3 against Iowa not last season but the previous season they brought a lot back so like this is a very good South Dakota State team and Oklahoma State you know they kept them basically at arms length the entire game right that big 217 fourth third quarter rather really put things away from them I mean you know at halftime you're looking at a game that is 17 to six so ostensibly still a pretty close game and then you know they score and they let South Dakota State score and then they score two more times in the quarter so I mean you you know you that third quarter you got three separate TD drives uh one that goes 10 plays 64 yards and 414 one at three uh or 681 and 233 and then also they were able to get a short touchdown as well so um yeah I was I was impressed with Oklahoma State like just not letting the situation bother them at all and I'm not saying we should rethink like are they the favorite or whatever because I still think this roster has got its limits I think their game next week against uh Arkansas is a very fascinating game for a variety of reasons uh just because like hey Bobby petrino's offense is going to challenge them at in my opinion at the place where they are the worst I don't think this Oklahoma State secondary is I don't think it's great um Griffin wild kid had seven catches for 150 in a score and he's very good player don't get me wrong the wide receiver but uh it it wasn't like it was impossible for Mark rowski in that offense to move the football so wondering ton green not a super consistent quarterback just yet wondering what patrino and Company can do next week but hey man they came out they took care of business at a one weird one o' start against a defending two-time n Champions who are not accustomed to losing and Oklahoma state was the better team and looked at the better team throughout so credit there uh I think that's where we should really start because it's kind of like the best opponents maybe game that we were talking about that things went well where things did not go well uh I'm not going to talk Thursday night we will talk about at 34 to2 Penn State over West Virginia a weird game that sees a multi- hour delay and my big fear in this game was that Penn State is just a better version of what West Virginia is hour is a better thrower like overall G Green's a better Runner but like they can use all of those guys and Andy cotal Nikki's offense looked really really good um they put up 457 yards of offense uh on third and fourth down combined they were six for2 which you know not amazing but they ran for 222 5.3 a tote they did have they were the more penalized team Penn State was but they forced three pen uh West Virginia turnovers right two fumbles interception also uh you know they had the one big fourth down stop it really should have been two like I thought that bet that spot in the first half for West Virginia was pretty good but every single time it felt like West Virginia I mean this game started off weirdly too punt fumble fumble punt Downs uh because West Virginia was moving the ball and they kind of stopped moving the ball um I mean they they really did stagnate there but every time West Virginia felt like they found something uh you know there was a response the other way coming uh you know there let's see after their first turnover on Downs then Penn State scores a touchdown West Virginia has a field goal they did Force One punt but after their next field goal it was a Penn State touchdown after their next touchdown it was another Penn State touchdown so really what happened here I mean was Penn State was just more physical team I thought up front the offense was better um you know really well paced and West Virginia only has 246 yards of total offense I don't think it's at the end of the world for uh for Neil Brown but this is kind of how this game was always going to go in my opinion it's just not a good matchup for West Virginia and it turns out it was not a good matchup for West Virginia the short yardage Gams man it was just it was tough for them it was tough sleding and G green did not look as confident as we're accustomed to seeing now good news is for them they get Albany next week try to get right before you play pit then you've got Kansas at Oklahoma State Iowa State K State at Arizona at Cincinnati it's like a really tough stretch there but so it's not the end of the world but I mean I think this does throw a little bit of water on West Virginia but not like a crazy amount I know people were excited for the game and everything the 11 a.m. start and the weather made it all crazy but um yeah like kind that kind of went exactly how I think it was going to go I think how a lot of us thought it was going to go no surprises there in that category I really don't think there were too many surprises all right let's talk about Colorado on Thursday night you know people were looking forward to this game I mean Colorado and Oklahoma state had these really difficult tasks of having to play these Powerhouse programs from the FCS um the first game of the year and so like those are not enviable spots because you win the game you're supposed to win the game you lose the game it's a disaster because you lose to an FCS team so Colorado ends up winning this game my big takeaway is shador Sanders very good but Travis Hunter is special I mean I've made the argument several times he is the best player in college football he looked like the best player in college football the receivers for Colorado are both very good Jimmy horen Jr had amazing amazing game uh seven for 198 and one score Travis Hunter was seven for 132 and three scores they were hitting vertical shots 41 yards for Travis Hunter 69 yards long TouchDown for uh Jimmy horn and then one thing I think we kind of all knew was going to happen they cannot run the ball they just they like you kind of hoped it would get better and they get D Hayden in the transfer from Ohio State but Colorado could not run the rock effectively at all 23 carries for 59 yards 2.6 yards per carry the longest run of the day was 11 yards right 11 yards s for them and Colorado is on defensively uh Colorado had seven tackles for loss and two sacks but like they can't cover anybody Ken Miller was 18 for 22 for 277 overall quarterbacks were 20 of 26 for 292 in a score in this game and I know the rush defense was a bit better for Colorado but like guys were running open all over the place the average catch length for uh North Dakota state was 14 .6 yards looks small man they look small on defense they couldn't tackle on defense and so all of that concerns you all of that concerns you for Colorado because those are big knocks than last year like really the only thing Colorado feels like they do really well at this point in time is the pass protection pretty good and they throw the football pretty well and that's about it like they didn't seem to be able to cover anybody they didn't super super effectively stopped the Run uh and I mean they allowed that long catch there at the end like you know there were a few yards away from losing the game so it's a good win it's nice they won the game because it was a scary game on you know move on to Nebraska they it's a very interesting contest last year now they're going on the road to play that game but uh yeah I think I think there's some concerns there for Colorado and like it was already stuff that we knew though but just the idea like things are different like I remember Colorado fans sending me messages being like you don't know you know coach Prime's got him in the right spot you know things are changing like that's clearly not true right I mean it's nothing saying it's like it can't be true but like it's not to the extent they're not as far along as some of those folks are trying to make it sound and uh you know I think that's like totally fair to recognize and realize also Utah won 49 nothing good to see cam Rising back five touchdown passes against Southern Utah uh 48 to3 for Kansas over lynon wood good to see Jaylen Daniels back as well UCF 57 to3 over New Hampshire also the other night and then TCU gets to win over Stanford this was a shaky shaky performance in the beginning but things eventually did settle down and Josh Hoover goes 28 of 42 for 353 and two scores so a really good day from him Jake Beck had a nice day good to see Savon Williams catch touchdown pass JP Richardson I mean they've got some guys in the passing game who can do some damage and they they were you know they scored in every single quarter they consistent like they really stepped it up in the second half especially and they closed that game out really well so it wasn't perfect this was was a really good performance particularly I mean the numbers of 27 points like don't really show it but uh five for 15 on third down with Stanford two for five on fourth down only 286 yards of offense uh yards per pass was 4.6 they threw a pick they only ran for 3.3 yards per carry uh Stanford did so TCU did a really good job I thought he had to take better care of the ball obviously um and penalties are the category they lost but like they uh their defense really made an effort to get after the quarterback in a way that they did in the past it was once again four sacks uh and Obi aor had sack and a half in this game Marcel Brooks had a sack and a half in this game uh and and Davon Neil and also Obi aor got in the back field for you know two plus tackles for loss I mean they've got guys who are getting in the backfield making plays and so that's that's encouraging for tcu's defense because that's not the case for tcu's defense in recent memory uh you know dating back at least last last last year uh we should say also on Saturday of note let's talk about the Arizona schools really fast and we'll talk about some other schools later on in the week but uh I want to end on the Arizona schools so really impressive stuff number one from uh the Arizona offense um 6139 of Mexico this game was really tight in the second not really tight but like tighter in the second half uh Arizona was scoring double digits in every single quarter Noah fa was 422 and four scores one pick tedo McMillan went for 304 yards and four touchdowns on 10 catches and was like really close to having a fifth touchdown uh this is good and bad he is a stud teams will be able to not be able to cover him the bad news is that I don't know I don't know if they've got anybody else um you know in the running game like they had a couple guys you know they had a really nice day on the ground eight yards a carry and three touchdowns for quy Conley and then 106 yards and a score for jakori cros croski Merritt but like who else in the passing game can they go to I mean I know they don't need to but like it's not always going to be like you can wait for tedo and McMillan to get Open Over The Middle on a Crossing route like you don't always have that time now if they do all year great I mean it's going to be ball game but like teams are going to bracket him team are going to do something to disrupt him and then also teams going to get after the quarterback a bit better than New Mexico did and they didn't sack they did not have a sack in this game uh and also Arizona's pass rush is a huge problem like Arizona's defense in general is a huge problem they gave up 471 yards to New Mexico New Mexico has actually had two pretty good offensive games so far I think what they score against uh yeah they scored 31 against Montana State it's Montana State still but like um yeah Arizona's defense big concern but no to look great and he's making throws all over the field there was one he made to McMillan on the left side I think it was a second touchdown maybe where he put it in the spot where McMillan has to come back for the football and it allows him to basically turn the corner so he's able to grab it snag it turn the corner it was just an excellent throw from the middle of the field but like kind of more towards the right side uh right hash in the middle and makes it to the left boundary and makes a really awesome throw uh faf basically confirmed everything that we thought about him heading into this season I mean this guy is a gunslinger this guy is really good and to me he's got a very good chance of being the best quarterback in the Big 12 he's my favorite quarterback in the Big 12 I've said that more than once but very very pleased uh with the offense and McMillan and faf but like balance on offense you know more they need more guys in receiving spots run the ball like that too it's not really G to matter but I want to see what else receiver they can get this was just one of those games where I'm not sure they needed anything else at wide receiver Wyoming uh beat a big 12 team last year they beat Texas Tech this year not so much 487 Arizona State takes care of Wyoming Sam levit was 14 of 22 for 258 and two scores and for like five yards a carry B SC cam scabo almost said B scabo cam scabo has a big game as well uh and on defense they end up you know get to the quarterback a couple times and uh they scor a couple defensive touchdowns as well so uh good to see Arizona State off to a good start they really did need that they really really did need that in terms of in-depth stuff we'll hit more on uh what happened between uh we'll get a little bit of Kate UT Martin later in the week Cincinnati gets 38 2 win over T even though sorsby has a nice game uh Iowa State 21 northa three we'll get into that uh Baylor 45 to3 over Toton State also we do have Texas Tech and Abal and Christian to get to but I want to spend some more time on that because I think it kind of shows a larger point I want to make about Texas Tech and I think it deserves some more time because their offense was amazing Baron Morton threw for 378 and five scores Taj Brooks ran for 153 and a score their offense once again Dynamic four different guys catching touchdown passes in this game and their defense was terrible their defense was terrible they allowed five 615 total yards 56 passing yards they allowed ab and Christian to be 11416 on third down 12 for 17 if you count the fourth Downs as well it's way way way too good to allow against team the ab Christian who last year was a five and six FCS outfit canot happen the big knock on Texas Tech is hey they can't win a big 12 Championship unless they've got defense I'm gonna talk more about that tomorrow Texas Tech you're one and0 it's great Baron Morton looked healthy as well it's huge but man you let a guy throw for 5506 yards and three touchdowns on you against ab and Christian at home well it wouldn't be text you know first close call right I mean they had a close call what was it last year against who was it two years ago a close call against somebody uh a little while ago who am I thinking of they had a close call against anyway I feel like they had a close call in recent memory Steph Stephen F Austin a couple years ago was a very close call but um yeah there's some there's some stuff we got to clean up all right you all can find me on Twitter Josh neighbors you guys can find the show wh podcast and on YouTube as well like the video sub to the channel and we'll see you all tomorrow
