but we begin with just like an absolute travesty for the National Football League I mean what is the NFL going to do how are they going to keep their coaches when these coaches keep running off to college football because news breaks over the weekend that Eric benemy longtime offensive coordinator of the Kansas City Chiefs he was with uh the Washington uh commanders and he is going to be Deshawn Fosters offensive coordinator at UCLA that's right the former Colorado great and uh one time UCLA head coach he was a running backs coach there previously he will be the associate head coach and offensive coordinator for UCLA this is a splash hire Eric benmy has been viewed as a potential NFL head coaching candidate a an offensive mind that's kind of been on The Cutting Edge of things Danny in in your time being able to to cover obviously the NFL as well as college football um your thoughts on getting to CB enemy come to UCLA and sort of what that means for DeShaun Foster and the Bruins so one to put on your first point I think Roger gell is probably scrambling right now reviewing the rules of free agency to make sure that they don't have an epidemic of coaches leaving the game as I make that joke I do realize I was one of the people at the beginning of this cycle wondering does college football have a problem but I gave up on trying to decipher that Trend a few weeks ago because this isn't the only NFL college coach we've seen so I do think uh that is absolutely a part of the conversation uh that does have to be mentioned but for Eric bemy coming back I think there's two things I I think I think you have to consider and I think both of them are valid and I'll get to whatever you want on what he does scheme-wise because I think there is more commonality crossover between college and NFL in offensive schemes than there's ever been they're very much used to be from the NFL's perspective we're better than that we don't do that we'll never take concept ceps from college football and it has completely flipped where they are now realizing there is a treasure Trove of offensive philosophy schemes plays whatever you want to look at they're saying oh wait you guys been doing this and we can do this and so you're seeing that influx into the NFL um in masses which I do think is probably why we're seeing some of this coach you know C carryover why we're seeing more than ever why we're seeing coaches from NFL go to college and college go to NFL because it's not that big of a jump scheme wise but for Foster and his staff I think one it brings credibility you're talking about a coach who not many people know now you bring in the coach who helped Patrick Mahomes achieve greatness and can Flash those Super Bowl rings and recruiting meetings and tell you about working with the best I think this 100% brings some credibility for recruiting to make them a more attractive destination for quarterbacks and offensive players and then two the other aspect of this and I don't think this is that crazy I think this is one step closer to Eric Ben becoming the next head coach at Colorado whenever ever that may be I do think this brings him back on the stage where he's in college it's a smoother transition he'll get familiarity with the nil landscape which he hasn't been able to have and the transfer portal the rules I do think that is very much one of the reasons not the only reason one of the reasons Eric bamy is back in college the reason Eric benmy is back in college is because there were eight coaching changes at the NFL level including the school the team he was at where he lost his job as offensive coordinator and none of the new eight head coaches wanted him as their offensive coordinator that's the reason he's back in college it's it's not to set up I mean maybe he'll end up with the Colorado job but I would guess that if he gets offered an NFL OC job he'll take that before he takes the Colorado head coaching job um I it was surprising because the enemy's name has been out there a lot like he had been he's been mentioned in the Colorado job numerous times when it's been open the last few years but like this was somebody who was seen you know when he was the offensive coordinator at the chiefs with Mahomes and they're winning Super Bowls which they still are by the way um he was seen as you know like the upand cominging whatever OC and everybody's like wow no nobody's hiring this guy for head coach nobody's hiring this guy for head coach now they're not hiring for offensive coordinator maybe the narrative didn't really match the reality of the situation I don't know I'm just it's if I'm UCLA like okay I mean it's not that he's a bad offensive coach I don't think he's a bad offensive coach at all it's just I think that the shine has come off of The Narrative around Eric benmy and the fact that he has gone from being Andy Reid's you know likely successor the head coach in Waiting in Kansas City if Andy Reid ever decides to retire to now being the offensive coordinator at UCLA kind of says everything you need to know if if the NFL teams know something that we don't I I think it's probably you know fair to defer to them um and my guess that is that they do maybe they don't think he's as good of a coach as as a lot of the NFL you know media either you does or or perhaps did is the better word there um really in the NFL we have a major problem is that not everybody gets to coach Patrick Mahomes and it's really it's it's a shame I think it's an epidemic right there's only one Patrick Mahomes and when you don't have Patrick Mahomes anymore you do risk getting exposed still like this is a good hire for UCLA in my opinion because even though we can sit here and say he's probably not going to get another NFL offensive coordinator job like he's not not in super high demand in the NFL on the recruiting Trail he can still pitch hey man like Patrick Mahomes Travis Kelce I worked with all those dudes I was the OC for some Super Bowl teams so yeah I I think there's a like both things can be true he's not at super high demand anymore in the NFL it's still a pretty damn good hire for UCLA given you know kind of the not restrictions but sort of just like difficult things they have to work under right now at UCLA for DeShaun Foster um and yeah like we see guys that I guess the only mistake that that he made here was not getting out before he lost his job right so you know like we saw a lot of these college guys who were probably gonna get fired they they jump out a year early it's it's just smart to not have was fired on your resume I think it's a great opportunity for him because you know how he's spinning this story right this is this is the quote um he said yeah via text message to uh CBS Sports NFL Insider Justina Anderson and NFL Rider uh Garrett Podell am I get hope I hope I'm getting that right I'll shout you out otherwise if not um I chose this is this is again a quote offered via text message from Eric benemy to CBS Sports I chose to fly under the radar this hiring cycle and my experience generated a lot of interest from a number of NFL teams prior prior to coming to this decision so his story is man I I'm I'm just working on me you know I'm just gonna lay low I'm G work on me this is a this is a good opportunity for me and I agree it's a great opportunity for him because this is a chance for you to be able to get um a a new opportunity to rebuild that brand and I was it it blew my not blew my mind but you jumped right to the place where Jeremy from the tailgate says the enemy is just bidding his time at UCLA until Dion flakes out at Colorado and he can go back to Boulder now you know whether he would be really in the mix for that job you we'd see but Elliott has you know you've pointed out here on the podcast look at Colorado's recruiting practices what what says that the operation right now is putting in the plan to be able to have class over class over class to to still be able to build in an upward momentum with a three to fouryear plan the recruiting practices do not indicate three to four year plan at this time is that is that fair Bud yeah I mean like if Eric Ben if Deion were to leave Colorado and Eric beamy Gets presented with that Colorado job next year do you take that because the way Colorado's recruiting that that thing is going to be a smoking crater when you get there because of the lack of young talent I guess now with unlimited transfer portal every every team can be remade every single offseason so you know whatever in theory but there is sort of you know gravitas to Dion that Eric benmy does not possess in terms of getting all these regardless of how good they are it's still hard to get 70 transfers to come say yes in one offseason and put together a team so yeah like that job may not be real attractive if if Dion bounces after this year like I think a lot of us uh think could be an option he was a former assistant for the Buffs as well Tom sorry you want to get in here no I just there's just arguing with somebody in the chat um last thing I I want to say on this is we never would say oh like what why wouldn't you stay in college instead of going to the NFL to a player right in terms of it's a better opportunity it's a better League you make a lot more money that's really going to be true for college coaches because college coaches only make what they make because the players the all the schools colluded VI the NCAA to not pay the stars of the game who are actually the players not the coaches I I had a pretty good stat it there's like 242 NFL players who make 10 plus million and there's like 10 NFL coaches who who make that much like it it won't happen immediately but all these college guys in terms of they're not gonna be like an immediate pay cut I think in most situations but there will be a serious like like relative to the inflation rate of of the college coaching salaries since 1984 Oklahoma case like since they got those TV rights and it really blew up the game these college coaches are not going to be getting rich in the way they once were compared to you know what the guys that came 10 years ago did because the the stars of the game are the players so I think in three four years We're not gonna have any question about this of course You' go to the NFL NFL coaches are gonna make a hell of a lot more money than college coaches will in about five years so for the Eric bemy side of this uh but when we look at UCLA's roster what do you think the chances are for him to be able to make a splash for him to be able to turn this around I I think that this is a good opportunity for Eric bemy to flip the narrative on this and to do it at a place like UCLA it's an opportunity what are the chances are he succeeds I I guess it depends on on what we would define success right UCLA their fan you their fanuel win total right now is five and a half five and a half so they're sort of coin flippy to make a bowl game in their first year in the Big 10 I think if you're Deshawn Foster you're guy who obviously played in the NFL UCLA's passing game and passing Concepts when they weren't off play action last year were kind of limited I think part of that's quarterback and part of that is you know chip wanting to focus more on some of the Run game stuff maybe they're they're going to try to open it up with a little more you know diverse passing game yeah they're trying to be a little more Pro style whatever that means these days yeah what if it is I think Pro Style just means he's coached in the NFL yeah that's pretty much what it means these days yeah because there's there's not really much of a difference uh one way or the other by the time the the difference is and this could be a problem for the higher the difference is NFL offenses are a lot more complicated and intricate because they have a lot more time to practice it whereas with a college offense when you've got a limited amount of practice hours and you can only run so many plays and you have young quarterbacks who aren't NFL quarterbacks all the time you kind of got to keep things simple like from the route Concepts and all the options and all that stuff that a player can take and the blocking schemes and y ya y like the NFL is much more complicated and intricate so it's probably going to be a bit of adjustment for B enemy to have to come to the college level and kind of change what he does there is a history of guys going from the NFL to college and really struggling to simplify I think Bill Callahan is probably the most notable right when when he took the Nebraska job after being the he was what OC of the Raiders yes I think with yeah okay it's uh and that was what I think wink Martell could face an issue too I don't think anybody understands how different like that for me was the biggest jump going from Florida State to the NFL it was the athleticism the speed all that like it's a jump but for a quarterback especially but I think it's every position the amount of time you have to spend studying the concepts your assignments the adjustments the opponent like I I I didn't have to study defense that much in college because nobody ran that much different stuff all a sudden the NFL they've got you know multiple multiple looks of just cover three alone multiple adjustments of cover two and like oh I really studied in college was cover three cover two some You Know cover Center open Center CL yeah that was it but then you get to the NFL all of a sudden they're doing something different on every play and the same time your playbook is 10x you know the size that it was too so that that to me is something but you have all day like you're a big boy you're supposed that's your job you're supposed to study and you have that time where in college at least where we stand now you are supposed to go to class there is supposed to be a 20 20 hour work limit rule like all those things we can laugh but there are there is only so much time in a day you know everybody goes over it but it's still not anywhere near what they would need to be you know still need time to squeeze in those online you know sports management courses yeah I was gonna say go go to class attend a class because like you can go to class I don't know how many athletes are actually going to physical classes anymore I think a lot of these schools just drop everybody in online classes well the good news is Eric bemy and UCLA they do have the offensive MVP of the starco brands La Bowl ready to go all right you know Ser I mean I say that jokingly but Ethan garbers at his best when healthy and again at his best win healthy I'm throwing two qualifiers on there but that's a quarterback that I think you can um you can probably put something you can probably put something challenging on his plate and see if he's going to be able to go get it so uh at least you're not dealing with a situation where there's zero experience and you're going to be bringing an Eric B enemy and he's just looking at a bunch of 19y olds with no starts to their name this is a player who has experience who has played in competitive games at the power conference level I think Ethan garbers is the qb1 for the Bruins and I think that he is a a qb1 that can be very serviceable for Eric beny's first offense as the Bruins offensive coordinator
