What's Going On With Michigan's QB Situation? | Cover 3 Podcast

um Bud who is your favorite Michigan quarterback um so we talked about this quite a bit in the off season and during the season win totals locks pod we're like yeah it probably has to be orgy because Michigan didn't do anything in the transfer portal to suggest that has any interest in running the foot or in passing the football okay look at Michigan's offseason do they take receivers in the portal no do they have any receivers who scare you no every one of their actions in the offseason from Michigan I think was banking on orgy being their quarterback and running some version of spread option mashing people 11-man run game having to account for quarterback in the Run game and I know there are reports out there that Davis Warren had amazing camp and I kind of believe that a little bit because I remember sitting there talking to Bruce Felman at Elite 11 this this summer out in LA and he's like I actually think Davis waren is some real juice so you know shouts to felin back when people were just talking about orgy and Tuttle but I don't think Michigan believed it otherwise they would have gone out and got some help in the transfer portal at receiver and they didn't do you know that Michigan's receivers tonight had where I seven targets for 19 yards was that like three catches on those targets three or four I don't know but I I'm pretty sure that under three yards per Target uh is like you know walk-on worthy so 5.8 yards per Target man that's efficient so I don't really believe that I don't believe Davis Warren won this job in Camp I'm sorry I believe that Alex orgy lost this job in Camp I think that he had to be so and I get again Camp's closed media can't see it I can't see it my assumption here is that orgy was so bad in Camp as to be unplayable they're like well damn it like we really can't play this guy now from a passing standpoint and honestly if you look at it the one pass that he just totally bounces like six yards in front of the guy I was like O Okay I I can kind of see that but yeah man I uh I'm downgrading Michigan quite a bit because I think that they built their whole offseason around orgy being the quarterback and apparently he couldn't win the job in Fall camp and I don't think it's a good thing you know I I don't think either quarterback played well I don't think quarterback was their biggest problem tonight I think that offensive line sucked oh yeah where's where's Gentry he just got beat out kind of F I don't know but I mean I just like we talked about it on the show like Fresno State's got a bunch of dudes on their defensive line who are like you know pretty light a little light in the britches you know they're not they're not the heaviest guys and there's like one play Michigan it's the fourth or it's a third and one and they literally go with nine guys on the line of scrimmage quarterback under Center running back behind him and Fresno State stuffed and I don't think they were like their pass blocking was not great like I'm not going to sit here and say Davis Warren played poorly because he wasn't getting blocked and then no he was missing throws just on his own but I also think he was like in a rush because he didn't really trust his line at all in the second half they started being able to kind of wear down Fresno and they started finding some you know success in the Run game but overall like that was a bad performance from that offensive line and maybe it gets better as the year goes on maybe Michigan is like the first college version of that team that kind of starts slow but gets better as the year goes on you start talking about oh nobody wants to see them in the playoffs but like what I saw tonight was very alarming to me from that offensive line the defense was still fantastic although there were times where you got the wink marale experience where they would Blitz everybody one guy misses a tackle and then there's a big play but I think they're willing to live with that because nobody else does anything on any of the other plays so like I mean it's it's still the situation to me where I look at this team the offense does not have to be that good for them to win nine games now if they're going to win those other three games against the three best teams on their schedule starting next week with Texas then the offense needs to improve a lot but they're a top 10 team yeah but I think that's more about the rest of the country o okay all right think I me that this could be a theme for the rest of the show but based on all the games you've watched this weekend how many great teams did you see one probably one yeah and it's the one that I think most of us like when they're like What's your National Title pick it's like it's I'm taking Georgia because they have a much better quarterback than the only other team that has a close roster I don't know I it's one game of football it's a little bit too much to to go Tom's right they could absolutely still win nine games with this offense but I am downgrading them because I don't think that they built their team around a non-mobile quarterback I think their non-mobile quarterback was just terrible in Camp and can't throw so the build doesn't match what you're running out there and you would think that Michigan could have gotten their pick of any transfer quarterback not any not any I mean who are you throwing to how many transfer quarterbacks out there can name a single Michigan receiver anybody can say samage Morgan they wouldn't know samage Morgan like that's not a guy that like transfers like oh I want to go play with samaj Morgan and and play at a crazy slow tempo with a brand new offensive line like it I I don't think that Michigan was going to be super attractive in the portal market like I don't think they're getting cam Ward I don't think they're getting will Howard I don't think they're getting any of the big like maybe they could have gotten Riley Leonard he was at Duke it's not like Michigan would be a if Diego Pavia can get into Vanderbilt Diego Pavia can get into Mion all right who knows what Barton did with that transcript though we're glad he got it we are everybody's very glad Diego got in yeah didn't samage Morgan have one of those like wide receiver receptions I believe he has one yeah and I think the pass was behind him and he caught it falling down the one guy who you want to yeah the one guy who you want to throw it ahead of him so that he can make a play in space and catch it while running and then do something afterwards yeah let's let's throw it behind him so that he has to fall down and not use his legs smj had one carry and finished with more yards rushing than he did on his two receptions I think that's a great summation of the Michigan offense tonight I think the offensive line is a terrific place to start and that's where Chiron Moore former offensive line coach he cuz what what happens when he talks to um kathern Tappen it's kathern Tappen right yep yeah cther Tappen after the game he saw he says I thought the defense was great we had a few explosive plays but you know that'll happen and that points to what y'all were talking about where later on in the game they did allow you know some stuff that was a little bit you know not there but guess what then you also get the the will Johnson you know makes everything right again I mean that guy is a freaking eraser can I just like Fresno State that play call you don't think will Johnson knows when a bubble screen's coming you don't think he's watched your tape like that's you're going to throw it to his side of the field will Johnson is a like he is a special player on and off the field like that man is going to the NFL as a firstr draft pick he is already handling his business in ways that college players do not because he is that dude I I didn't see shiron Moore smile a lot tonight the only time I saw him smile was when he was talking about will Johnson that's yeah I mean that's what we're dealing with right there um but yeah offensively on the offensive line Chiron Moore says we got to do the tiny things better and those when he says we got to do the tiny things better I assume that in that umbrella is the offensive line has got to do a better job because they are going to play better defensive fronts than Fresno State a lot I do think Fresno's front for the Mountain West is the best in the Mountain West yeah it's good for that League yeah yeah because boys defense is terrible I I was a little bit disappointed honestly in Michigan's defense that they did not just to like last year's Michigan defense is probably allowing like sub 150 yards and pitching the shut out I I watched almost every snap of this game they move the ball a little bit like I I not as good as they were last year I kind of felt all right so I kind of felt like they had the leverage until the offense just failed to put anything together and it did kind of tip the other way I I'm not I'm not going to put too much at the defeated the Wolverines defense on this one I know they have some dline injuries and the way they play these games like they didn't always play to blow people out last year either so I I am willing to you know just evolve as we get more data points which we'll get a pretty big one next week as Texas comes to town guess
