Where Do The USC Trojans Land In The AP Top 25? Big Commitment From Top 2025 DB

Intro [Music] [Music] good morning good afternoon good evening how are you watching whereever you watching how are you listening wherever you listening it's the BET online salute Detroit podcast and the tripod is back the bearded bits are here I told you guys Jamal would not have a beard the next time you see him if you guys saw me yesterday I'll tell you I just shaved yesterday you know it was getting a little gnarly on Sunday I think you know what I think it is I think Jamal you just it's the itch that gets you once you it's totally it's totally it's totally the itch that gets me I I'll tell you it also like when it gets a little like scratchy like above the corner of my lip like it it just I I I don't enjoy food as much I can't sleep as well you know I just I got to get rid of it you know you got power through there's like a five- day period where if I can power through then you know I mean it's I'm rolling deep but uh I got to power through once you get past that stage it's all good it's all good you just got to get past that stage there we go anyway how are you doing Jamal doing well gentlemen great to see you guys as always excited to talk Trojan ball I mean my God here we are August 12th I mean uh three weeks away three weeks away from from actual football uh can't believe it my man right die how are you doing doing good we uh we survived another earthquake today so that oh yeah I meant to start the show nice we're here yeah that's yeah that was about as long as it too so but yeah all good good to be with you guys how was it uh you were closest Ryan to the epicenter you know so how was it uh you know what you what' you think yeah I was like two miles from the epicenter so it was definitely the I think it was only a 4.7 but it feels much bigger when you're on top of it so it was it was the biggest one I felt only no real damage a few things fell off the shelves but um luckily nothing more than that but yeah it's definitely the biggest one I felt in the 17 years I've lived here or whatever wow hey hey Ryan nothing beats 93 94 94 94 North Bridge 94 nothing beats 94 nothing beats 94 man what a year huh 94 I mean year of OJ trial and the earthquake my God I mean it was quite the year 94 was 94 I was uh I was in the car I was driving to lunch you know and then and my car started bopping up and down and there was a big rig behind me so I thought it was like the vibration from the big rig and I'm like what's going on over here and then uh I was I was stopped at a red light and then uh you know then I started getting all these messages about the earthquake I was like man that was an earthquake holy cow are you saying today you were doing that today today oh I was like you weren't old enough to be driving in '94 no no I mean you know Ryan you know I was 10 which which in you know for an Indian you know you you you start you know kind of steering around seven you know so you get you start practicing on that autoa you know so it uh you know it's plausible good point that's the receiving messages gave it away there was the yeah yeah yeah no but in the car it was just like up and down I'm like what's going on you know is it like the vibration from this big rig what's going on you know and then it was wow never been in a car before during earthquake so first time were you in Elsa gundo while you were driving Elsa gundo right right you know right there El they said that they didn't filling in West Cina so that's weird like I wonder like the dispersement that's that's gonna make me going down a hole and we don't have time for that so start talking about dispersement the epicenter how does disperse the football gods found Darius Reick out USC's only ranked 23rd and had something to say today that's that's essentially what happened that's definitely what we're going to talk about today they finally put numbers they put numbers in front of the logos today and the media's gone wild now that they put numbers in front of the logo I have one gripe about it and it doesn't make sense to me but it'll make sense to everybody else but other than that before we jump into that we just got right before we logged on we got a tweet Darius reick out of Thomasville let me pull it up yep Thomasville Georgia class of 2025 safety 511 175 pounds he rang the bell today he's going to be a Trojan in the summer just got to get into December he's going to be a safety I will tell you this watching his film he can return kicks so maybe that's why they bought him uh 247 said that the best thing for him to be a special teams contributor which is weird um I don't know why they did this and we'll never know why they did this but if it's to take the load off a branch to bring in a a pun returner um they did a pretty good job like this dude could this dude could take back some kicks he's okay on defense from what I saw but it's more depth fourstar we got to be moving up in the rankings now but it's another dude out of Georgia you guys got any comment on the Ryan what do you think real quick yeah I mean it just happened so kind of diving more into him it's always I don't want to say everyone's doing the best they can but all the sites are so different and like measurable so like on three eyes I'm at 6' 185 so that's like a much bigger size for safety for me I see it more as you know they lost Hilton stubs this is a a replacement at safety where they lost one they pick up another um he was committed to Auburn in February flipped to UCF and now flipped to USC so we'll see how committed he truly is but like we've been saying an August commit I think speaks a lot more volume than a February or March commit um and we know his staff has been hitting the the SEC country Georgia hard and he is a Georgia kid so um you know like you said I think could be a good return specialist I want to dive into more seeing his his skills at um as an actual safety obviously since he's been committed to Auburn in USCF I didn't really look a ton into him so a little more of that but hey another uh another commit and we'll see uh how long he he stays committed or if he signs the line in December but but yeah 6 foot 185 sounds a lot better than 510 170 so we see what the truth is Matt man you got anything on it no I think Ryan said it best yeah that was kind of the first thing that came to my mind R is kind of the the musical chairs with stubs uh you know so a little bit of reinforcement there for sure um and yeah I mean it also seems to be really interesting uh you know we've talked a lot in the offseason about USC's ability to go pluck kids out of the state of Georgia and then there also seems to be kind of a pattern emerging with these flips from Auburn you know so I don't know like what exactly is sort of happening but there's sort of a you know they say you know one one is an event you know two is a trend and then three is kind of a pattern and it sounds like you know a pattern seems to be emerging here where we're we're able to kind of flip guys from Auburn so I don't know if it's something in particular we're doing from a recruiting standpoint it's a strategy it's a location it's a type of Engagement but it is kind of interesting um just kind of the location of it but agree with you feels like uh it's a depth piece and it'd be great to again kind of fortify uh having another returner back there on kickoffs in particular and uh you know you give you give Branch a blow on on the punt returns so you know uh I think more to come but uh Hey anytime you can add somebody it's always a good thing yeah before we jump too deep into into into rankings I just want to let you know Marcus Betts first day back two for four with a home run just let you guys know that he's not missing a beat me and me and will were at the Dodger game last week Fred you know and it was uh uh against the Phillies it was uh felt like it was the Dodgers B lineup out there you know there was no no mooki no Muny it was you know it was tough you know they're all coming back so yeah they've been banged up totally totally they get healthy in September they're they're fine I mean they've been so banged up and they're still what 30 Games over 500 so yeah yeah yeah they're 20 over 500 and they're tied one game out of the best record in baseball they tied they tied it yest they tied yesterday okay okay that's pretty good and and and people are considering to be playing bad right now so how what's going to happen when they play decent the world the World Series champ I got to I got to send you before we jump into the rankings coach I got to send you both a picture of uh you know Ash Ash my buddy Ash who's obviously a huge Trojan lifer um but he's also a huge Oakland A's fan and obviously with the Oakland A's moving to Las Vegas this is it right I mean we're in kind of the last 45 50 days he refuses to go to any of the home games obviously in terms of kind of boycott with ownership so he's going to all the road games he was actually in Toronto this weekend and there's a hotel H in the stadium staying in the hotel and like outside of his bed is like the view of the game so I got to send you guys that photo he's actually staying there he's staying there he's staying there yeah he was there three for the whole weekend series it was Friday Saturday Sunday so I gotta send you guys that a couple photos that's incredible Ash Ash has to have at least a million frequent flyer miles ashon just let me H some f miles totally every SC game f to every a we uh we calculated it so you know how like USC right his streak is what uh every game since '92 I believe something like that every game consecutive game stre Ash it's not a consecutive game streak but Ash has been to every home game since O2 so if we've got USC cycle I joke with him his Twitter handle should be USC socio you know he's not quite psychopath but he's a sociopath so there we go USC socio you know there we go soon to be guest of the show yeah Soo yep so moving forward like I said earlier they put Paul Finebaum numbers in front of the logos today got the media going crazy your boy your boy Paul he went off on a team but it wasn't us he went off on a different team which doesn't make which doesn't make sense he said that he said Michigan is a marginal playoff team because they lost hard ball he's never coming back this and that but he didn't say anything about Georgia being number one and I kind of have an issue with that but that's neither here nor there let's talk about SC being number 23 real quick on on fine bomb our boy like did you see he backtracked his Dion to SC take because Dion can't even deal with the Colorado media yeah shocking oh he yeah he said oh he also said about that he said that I can't believe that Colorado got one vote he was like I guess Dion won't talk to me now because I just said something bad about him so yeah the Dion the Dion experiment is going up in Flames that hypothesis is coming very very true coach loves every bit of it you know why you asking in it's like when Jerry Seinfeld asked Kramer it's like why are you when he was losing money in the stock market he was like why are you enjoying this you know it's uh I'm actually I'm actually rooting for Dion but boycotting a network because you put rankings out like that is totally totally I I just it's just the fact that he he's no I I understand why I'm just giving you a hard time I like people earn their keep and people dream of becoming a head coach and you just pop and get a power five job and like you don't have the training and you're terrible at it and it's just it's just unfortunate either near neither here nor there like that's a conversation for a different day we could have offline but back to the rankings off of our tangent USC is number 23 I don't know if the AP and so the coaches have them 23 also yep but they have North Carolina State flip with Kansas so North the AP has Kansas 22 but the coaches have North Carolina State 22 Kansas 24 North Carolina State 2 uh 24 and the other one but they primed FC to be in a perfect spot and let me tell you why SC goes to LSU beats LSU they beat Utah State right they go to Michigan and let's just say they lose to Michigan but they lose to Michigan by three on the last second I even give it a really good defensive game 10 to 17 in the big house it's a game that everybody expected to be Michigan edges USC right so they beat LSU they jump up let's say 17 they lose to SC they drop two they go down to 19 now let's just say SC runs the board right all the way until they get a rematch for Michigan again now that puts them in Prime position to make you only got to be 12 to make the playoff so it's not hard for them to make the playoff how the question is how good and how high will they be are they a first round buy team are they a six seven are they a 3C like how who do they see in the Big 10 Championship there's so many unknowns and so many questions but where they're placed now the schedule is very favorable to them and I say this because Penn State is ranked number eight but pen state has am I if correct me if I'm wrong Penn State comes to LA or SC goes to Penn State comes to La Penn State comes to LA right so that works in their Direction here's another thing you have to have ask the question about Penn State what week is it because you know after week six Penn State is no longer a thing right they always have this like they're top they they're very good and that they just seem to Trend down fast but Penn State comes to La they beat Penn State their schedule right now is very favorable for them Battle of Victorville that's always up in the air that's always a question like we always said most underrated rival in college football they are set up to be a college football playoff team the question is how much leniency do they get and how many losses are they allowed to get to How Many Losses Are Allowed end up in the 12 spot that's my question so I'm going to say this we know that America does not like SC so I I think they could only they're only allowed at two losses anything other than two they're going to miss the playoff I don't care what you say there's going to be other three lost teams that's going to make the playoff SC has three losses they don't make the playoff only way they have three losses if if they make the big 10 championship and lose in the Big 10 Championship that could be their third loss and that will still get them in I think but where they put them I think their Prime position their schedule favors where they need to be the question is where's the ceiling on this ranking and where's the ceiling on this schedule how far up can they go that one is left to the players and remain to be seen once we see the product on the field Ryan what do you have about the ranking yeah Jamal you and I talked about this back when we were doing the LA football show um like I love these rankings for Content like it's fun but I hate preseason rankings for actual meaning because human nature is always going to compare to what these rankings are even though they mean nothing there's no games played but people always in the committee will always look back to like like oh played four teams in the top 15 which I think bodess well for SC but in reality it means nothing because those teams could be you know three lost teams come the time the college football committee actually starts making their own rankings so I it's it's fun for Content fun for fodder I hate it for actual like um analysis just because I don't think it provides a whole lot that being said this is the show on USC so we we'll obviously analyze the best we can and I think SC is in a great spot at 23 I think it's a fair spot um you know could I based on what we believe they've done this offseason put them a little higher sure but I think 23 is very fair based on how our last SE season ended and based on the unknowns going into this year specifically at quarterback um and then like you said coach I I think it's it's in a real formidable spot based on their schedule because they play for top 15 teams team entering the season so you win even two of those four that looks pretty good considering the lowest seed is a 13 the highest seed is a seven um and I believe though two are on the road two are at home or three three or one yeah depending how you can yeah two at home um so you know as long as you kind of split those or if you can win three and one then they're in a real real good spot heading into kind of that down stretch where then they have well obviously Notre d part of that down strrretch where they have UCLA Notre Dame um to kind of end the season and Washington right before that so um yeah I think it's a good spot it makes a lot of fun kind of seeing where these teams stack up heading into the Year Matt man go ahead yeah no I I totally Preseason Rankings agree with Ryan this is sort of a walkdown memory lane of a conversation we had you know about a year ago I'm a huge proponent of not having any preseason rankings and your first ranking come out week five you know like your first ranking should come out October 1st you know where you've got at least four to five games body of work and then you you come out with your top 25 I mean wouldn't that be something where you've actually sort of earned your ranking you know to that point so putting that aside I mean if we just sort of take these rankings that face value I agree I I think USC is in a in a really nice spot here for three reasons I think number one being at number 23 you are flying under the radar a little bit right I mean there isn't that pressure of being a a preseason top five team a Pras season top 10 team you can sort of fly under the radar a bit and also sort of grow into uh the team that you need to be in season so I think that's you know job number one I think in in se's favor number two like Ryan talked about I mean if you look again these rankings at face value USC plays the number seven team the number eight team the number nine team and the number 13 team right and so you have now the opportunity you have the platform to sort of move up and if you can go two and two in those games and run the table in the other games you're right there you're you're going to be a playoff team you know and so that's probably how you kind of have to almost think about the season here how do they do in the other eight and then how do they kind of do in the big four and I think even before these rankings came out we thought those four games were going to be their big games you know LSU Penn State uh Notre Dame you know Etc as as kind of the big games Michigan um as what was going to sort of Define the season and then number three you have because you have four games you have margin for error right you you don't have to go 4 and 0 if you go two and two and you take care of your business elsewhere uh you're in a really good position so I think for all of those reasons I think they're in a really good situation obviously I think for the folks that are really upset about the preseason 23 really the two biggest factors that go into a Is 23 Right preseason ranking is how you finished last year and then what the perception is of your incoming recruiting class not your 25 class your you know what is the 24 roster look like and so I think based on those two things I think 23 is right about correct because it was a team that finished eight and5 and lost the Heisman Trophy winner obviously Miller Moss had that decorated debut the six touchdowns in the Holiday Bowl but if you really sort of break it down position by position there's just a lot of question marks I think we believe this team is going to far exceed expectations to what the national media thinks but look we've seen with Miller Moss does it translate over a whole season we saw slovis blow up his first game we saw JT Daniels blow up his first game we saw Jackson Dart blow up his first game none of those careers panned out the way we thought so question one is does Miller Moss's career sort of take on the trajectory of that first game question two wide receiver unit is absolutely loaded but heavily inexperience so who's going to step up who's going to be wide receiver one who's going to be wide receiver two same thing a little bit with the running back position obviously deep talented are they going to step up what is the offensive line look like some obviously some folks on the freaks list but again unproven and then you flip it to the other side of the ball Danton Lynn coming in all of the 1400 pounds in the offseason but we haven't seen anything on the field yet so given the basically questions at every position group kind of from a zoomed out perspective combined with the fact that it was an eight and5 finish and you're losing the Heisman Trophy winner I think 23 is about right but I think it's the perfect situation uh for Lincoln riy to be able to fly under the radar at the beginning of year three and then have the platform and the margin for error uh to be able to finish in that top 12 if Jamal if if that's the case then shouldn't they be 14 or 12 or 15 or 13 if what is the case if they lost the Should They Be Unranked Heisman Trophy winner they went seven and five right they got a new quarterback coming back who's been in the system for a long time and now this is his first year starting he made his debut um in the bowl game right shouldn't they be 12 13 14 15 coach I would argue based on what you just said they should be unranked you know I mean if because if you're saying that if you're saying that this is a an 8 and5 team that lost the best player in college football and obviously there's a ton of talent all across the position groups but they're unproven right I mean that actually screams for them to more be unranked than necessarily be in the top 15 or top 10 all right let me ask you this also let me add this what if what if what if I lost 29 people to transfers and only got nine in the transfer portal and the rest of the people who came in are just high school kids talker lost Trophy winner there's one difference here coach okay there's one difference all right you know we're not in the SEC okay so you that's and if if that's the reason why that that makes Absolut okay so and that's what I wrote down next that's said legit What what I have next this is they have the exact same thing as LSU the only difference is they did better in the portal they replace all the people that they lost right we know Brian Kelly is not a portal guy he went and got nine guys and they lost 20 was it 22 or 29 Ryan we talked about it that one day I think it was closer to 30 yeah I'll double check okay they lost all those guys right and they said that it's based off of you guys going to give me on my SEC rant it said it's based off of what you did in the past season and what you have coming in totally you you have a mirror image of USC and you put this team at 13 there's no way you could tell me that your team is a number 13 team and you lost 20 you lost 20 guys let's say the nine guys that you brought in replaces the we say 29 so 27 yeah okay so you lost what you lost 19 guys and you're telling me that they're a 13 team and it's the exact same thing SC same record right I don't remember I LSU Comparison don't know what LSU did in their bowl did they win their bowl game yeah and they had two more wins last season I think they were 10 and three yeah were were they okay they were okay I apologize they were 10 and three but you lost the Heisman I mean there we've talked a lot coach like these the similarities between these teams are kind of uncanny like quarterback situation coaches in year three replacing Heisman Trophy quarterback obviously really great offensive Minds a lot of questions on defense yeah LS coordinators absolutely I mean they're mirror images of one another but I think coach you know to that point I think there is a significant difference between going 10 and three and going eight and five you know so I think for for that reason I think they deserve to be a few spots higher but again look if if two things one is if SC wins that game they probably go from 23 to 16 okay if LSU wins that game they probably stay at 13 right so in the end at the outcome of that game isn't going to materially change the ranking that much and then number two I would argue if you are truly kind of a mirror image of your opponent you want to be the lower ranked team because you're actually gonna sort of get outsize credit if you win the game right I mean it's going to look it's going to look even better potentially on your resume again Ryan to our Point assuming these things hold up which is a big if big assumption but let's just sort of play that assumption World you'd rather if you two teams are equally matched with each other and it was 13 against 23 you'd rather be 23 because it's going to be a higher quality win you're going to accelerate up in the rankings faster you're going to just generate this momentum right off the bat um than you would if you were the higher ranked team so in that regard I think it's all going to sort of correct itself but in that way I think USC's actually at an advantage yeah and I like the flying on the radar thing too that kind of works out well but the only Flying Under The Radar thing is here's the only problem with SC could never fly under the radar you know what I mean like it's just their USC like if they if SE all of a sudden pops off 5 and0 they're going to jump from 23 and they'll be in the they'll be outside of 10 they'll be like number 11 and they be like oh the Trojans are coming you know what I mean they beat Michigan they beat LSG blah blah blah this and that their next big test is going to be Penn State like compared to like Washington which I'm surprised it's not in the rankings makes absolutely no sense they hired a they the they they're hir head coach is just as good as the guy they left and I told you guys this I don't think you were on the show Jamal but I told Ryan this last year when I was like Arizona is gonna be ranked and they finish the season ranked because Jed fish is a really good coach he's really good he does a good job and he's a hard ball guy he was with hard ball and for you to just pass it up like so if it was Washington at 23 they'll be able to fly below the radar the whole time because they don't get as much as National nois I don't think SC could fly on SC pops off 5 and0 they'll be outside the top 10 and all of a sudden they'll be talking well is that he back you know you'll start to get you'll start to get that narrative well is that he back was sey back I wanted to comment on another thing that you said and I agree with you but I don't think what if you just had no rankings and you don't rank the teams until after the conference championships you play your whole season whole season you play the whole season you're not ranked and you find out where you legit ranked after the conference Championship how much intense would the games be how much intense would the conference championships be you know what I mean like now at that point like every game matters now but just think how much we may be a number one C like this game really matters like you know like I I'm also not I'm not a fan of rankings either I think I legit think it's just a name in front of your team that's all it is to me I mean sorry a number in front of your team name that's all it is to me you got to show up and play Still any given Saturday right or Thursday or Wednesday or Tuesday if you play in the mat what were you going to say Ryan oh I was going to say I mean there's already too much and it's impossible not to there's already too much human bias in doing Collective rankings but if you do zero ranking till the end of the season like then it's just way too much human bias error because there's at least now there's something to go off of like once the the official colge football ranking is like okay a 10 beat a 12 or this or that whereas if you do nothing you're literally like well they were just better like I don't care if they have three losses they're the better team like look who they beat like it doesn't matter yeah I think it would be I mean it's it's a provocative Point coach wild I I would be totally wild I I'm I'm I'm absolutely with you there but I think what would happen is to Ryan's point I think we would get biased even more to just sort of the 10 or 12 Blue Blood programs you know like and especially when you talk about TV and prime time and Cinderellas and and and teams that perhaps you know haven't been perennial contenders that are one particular year you know those are the stories that I think make college football so special as well and the ability to have kind of an upset you know if there's no ranking you know how do you determine whether something is an upset or not right and and how do you actually sort of determine quality along the way and so I do think that there's probably a happy medium there coach to your point that you know I think in F first week in October You could argue even mid- October uh but at some point you know Midway through the season that you you roll out the rankings but then you do kind of need a barometer to understand how far you are how close you are what is a marquee game to allow you to make those jumps um you know what what's an upset what isn't I think there's a way to then kind of couch it and and you know sort of to that point Ryan about the human bias right I mean that's just sort of natural with I think any sport um outside of you know the pro sports where you're just kind of there's fewer teams so you can just kind of go by the standings I mean let's not forget right 2003 the BCS what was the BCS that was a collection of 13 supercomputers the algorithm was invented at MIT there was no human intervention and USC finished third okay you know in a year where they were considered you know uh the best team so you know not having any uh human involvement clearly showed it it doesn't work um and then sometimes having too much there's sort of a bias element there as well but I think I think you need I think just from a human nature perspective coach we need to know where we stand right I mean pick any sort of Walk of Life whether it's sort of in your relationship in your career with your friends with your hobbies like where do I stand you know I got to know where I stand it would be a very uncomfortable world if there was no rankings I think in in for three or four months in the college football season but a wild thoughts for sure get get comfortable being uncomfortable and there you go Bo and I'm I'm I'm happy you brought that up because I think that the bias was was put on people right and I'll say it in this way and you you brought up a very good point the BCS the computer determined who was the best team in the nation the SE finish number three well if it's an algorithm how does SC finish number three and everybody was saying they're the best team in the nation who's putting that information into the computer right well coach I mean it was it was the the metric right I mean it went by strength of schedule remember back then if you recall margin of victory was a big deal and so you saw back if you recall back in 03 04 05 06 you know early parts of the BCS I mean they were teams you know Chip Kelly got a lot of flack for sort of running up the score there were a lot of Chip Kelly before uh you know in that BCS era Bob Stoops was one of them I mean they would run it up you're up 547 they're pouring it on because margin of victory was a big part of the algorithm and then if you recall it was the the second derivative the third derivative in terms of strength of schedule it was my opponent's strength of schedule and then my opponent's opponent's strength of schedule you know we got really deep into the math and to your point you know there SC was number one in both polls both human polls and the computers had them three yeah no I I I I just think there's a network out there that been Conference Championship pushing a conference for about 20 years now and people have kind of bought into it I'm just saying and they just kind of bought into it and there's no way you could tell me they got the toughest schedule but in the middle of the in the middle of the season when everybody is fighting for a conference Championship they're playing Little Sisters of the Blind and Southwest poor State like there's no excuse for that like then and I saw something today on Pat McAfee this was like his first time ever going he was like they're going to have to stop doing that because they want to see tougher games throughout college football they're going to have to start playing their first game of the season on the road they were the only conference that didn't play their first game of the season on the road they played it at home or a neutral site in their region now they're starting to get pushed away they're gonna have to play at home there's going to be some changes I don't care what you guys say it's going to change and I think we're starting the season and we saw the change last year where Florida State should have been in Alabama gets in they get dog walked in the rosebowl right like there was a dog walked I mean that game was in overtime I mean on the last play the biggest the biggest change is the four best Pack 12 schools are in the Big 10 now so there's a lot more they can't just say they're the best conference when you have a pretty damn good conference what what I mean by dogwalk Jamal you saw that Michigan was the physical Michigan won the war and the battle you know what I mean it it could have been one of those things where Alabama could have won the war and lost the battle Michigan was physically bigger physically better a better team than Alabama like there there you can't there's no doubting that like that was a legit everybody saw it with their own eyes and I think the CH look at SC they're in Georgia so heavy right now and I think they're figuring out to where like all right in order to keep our fan base happy we have to pull a good percentage out at California and we got to pull a good percentage out of where we know kids could compete and we could be better in the Big 10 and I think that's starting to happen too look at the 25 class this is what the first out of state kid and the majority of them are instate so that's starting to happen too and maybe there is a good mixture in that but I think you're thinking 26 class 25 class is a lot of out of state oh 26 I'm sorry Ryan you're right 26 26 the next class you're right you're right 25 is all the Florida and Alabama's but I think there is a change coming and the change is good but the only thing is it's 12 teams now you know what I mean like and the thing the biggest thing and the biggest thing like you're worried about Jamal is like oh man I hope it doesn't turn into college basketball like it doesn't matter about the season let's just make it to the tournament and become become Mike ISO right we don't care about the Big 10 but get us in the tournament we're the best team in the tournament right and so that theory could work but I don't know how good it will be for the product and the brand of college football moving forward yeah I mean I think coach I mean all all very fair points I I think the key here though is all of whatever perceived bias there is or favoritism SEC vs Big 10 there is and then we've talked about this earlier in the offseason you have to win right I mean at the end of the day there's no denying that the SEC has won 15 of the last 19 national championships so do they get more than their fair share like we talked about probably you know it's kind of like hey does LeBron get more hype sometimes than he deserves or you know does this Superstar get more hype than they deserve probably because it's that's sort of just the nature of sports media that's the nature of American culture that's just we we hype things up that's what we do um but at the end of the day they've won and and when you've when the SEC has played other conferences in the national championship game they have won you know I mean when when Florida played Ohio State you know they won when when Florida played Oklahoma they won when Auburn played Oregon they won right I mean so you know the the way to sort of Silence the crowd right and then the critic is you got to win that that that's really all that it comes down to so you know I think I think the SEC is is top dog right now and you know they deserve to be because they've won all the trophies and and now the Big 10 is you know to Ryan's point and and what we're seeing they're reinforced now with these these four great programs out of the Pack 12 across multiple Sports so now it's kind of a mono imano type of situation now let's see is there an opportunity to sort of Dethrone the SEC as the best conference and is is the big 10 ready to to take that mantle I think that's what's going to be really fun and unique here but I think both conferences are going to be highly respected I think both conferences are going to get at least three teams in every year maybe four uh you know and so I think you know to that point as long as you can kind of finish top four in in these conferences you're you're gonna get in and and you're gonna have a shot now you you know what I do think is funny about this year's rankings this is the funniest Texas thing to me Texas is number four right and I'm I'm seeing Texas number four like make sense their quarterback is coming back sarcus finally built what he's need to build they were in the college football playoff last year this is a good football team coming back you see some things around the world like oh well it's the SEC team at number four we got we got another one we got eight in the to like hold on hold on that's a big 12 Texas team and then then you start to get the well they already started recruiting for the SEC that's a big 12 Texas team there's kids on that team team that were recruited to play in the Big 12 like it's funny how all of a sudden Texas gets so much love now that they're in the SEC compared to if this was a year ago and they were the number four team they like well how is Texas number four why is Texas number four that you don't have to comment on me I just think that's a really funny thing to me like how all of a sudden a flip of a confence just changes the whole perspective fa and you know theyve to be there they were in the playoff last year so fact that they were in the playoff I would say Texas is number four the two factors to our earlier point is because of how they finished last year as a playoff team correct and number two all that nil money is coming home from a recruiting standpoint and a retention standpoint more so than the conference I would say is why they're at four you think so no no no no I guess what I'm saying is like the Flack they would have gotten I do think they deserve to be there 100% And I'm sark's biggest fan like I I love what sark's doing I'm happy for him and where he is um I'm just saying like if this was a year ago and they were four they would have got so much Flack and so many people would have gave such a hard time but now this year they're a part of the they're in the circle now so it's all good because they're they're a part of the conference and it's one of the eight teams in the in the top 10 or whatever so to me that I just think that's so funny how it all worked out now I do think they deserve to be there I'm not saying that's so like that's the only reason that's all I'm saying I just that's really funny that's hilarious to me um it is it is what it is I just think reaction I just want to talk about one team and talk about flying under the radar and I don't know where they came from we didn't pay attention to them last year they're number 11 Missouri Missouri is number 11 in the nation they got one of the top receiving cores they got some Pro Prospects what what what happened in Colombia like where did this come from like are they they're no longer below the radar now they're their bleep in the FTC control room and people know who they are this Missouri thing is crazy maybe this is the trajectory but I don't know if it could happen though just because it's SC just because of the name but you think this is the trajectory Jamal that you were talking about earlier that they they need to go about the same way as Missouri no coach I mean I think Missouri Missouri had a phenomenal year last year right that people had sort of forgotten about 11- win team you know I mean incredible season went through kind of the the SEC uh right the recruiting ranking um the roster rankings had them with the number two wide receiving core in the country this year behind Ohio State I believe so there's there's a lot to be excited about their quarterback is uh I think some tremendous odds there's a tremendous value bet there for for him to try and win the Heisman uh no question about it I was talking about that with with Will offline um I I think that the playoff system benefits programs like Missouri you know like when when you have a year where you could finish top four in the SEC and now you get into the dance and you have an opportunity to win it all whereas in the prior system you could have a great year kind of get a nice uh you know at large bid you know a new year six game have a nice kind of cotton bow season you know Old Miss was kind of in that category a couple years ago as well now you get the opportunity to play for it all so I think those those teams that are kind of perennial four five6 you know that they hover you know around the top four in both the SEC and the Big 10 I think those are the programs that are going to wildly benefit from a playoff situation so think Missouri you know think um you know in the Big 10 think of Wisconsin you know old miss you know Penn State you know I think those are the teams that are really going to get an opportunity now to be able to win the win the whole kitten Kaboodle and then when you sort of flip it on the other side when you think about a a big 12 for instance now Utah kind of gets the opportunity to play for it all and get a chance to kind of get in when they've always kind of been on the outside I I know Ryan has talked about this a ton over the years where you know Utah's always really good but they're never quite great you know there's there's a ceiling to their talent they usually kind of peek out as a 10in two team a nine and three team but now guess what you know that that can get you in the dance right so it's those teams those perennial teams that kind of finish anywhere between seven and 15 now they get a shot you know uh to be able to make a make a ton of noise so that's the piece that I think is really exciting I think the teams that are sort of perennial top four top six they're almost penalized because they gota like win an extra game so they're gonna like not be that thrilled with this but it's those that next year from 7 to 15 the floodgates have really opened and I think it's going to bring more fans uh to college football in in a very unique way you know it's unfortunate Oregon number three we're GNA have the Joey Harrington season all over again that was pretty season coach I mean you know he they went 12 and one that year they won the Fiesta bolt that's all right they didn't they didn't do enough they finished number two that year that was the year that uh Nebraska got into the dance uh you know with Eric Crouch and uh after losing I believe the score was 62- 36 to Colorado in the Big 12 championship game Nebraska lot they still got in and played that decorated Miami team everybody wanted it to be Miami and Oregon and I think Miami was up 34 nothing at halftime of that game so so here's but here's the whole deal though or was supposed to go the whole thing and they didn't go there there there's another example of Oregon being what did I call them glorified losers or something I have one question coach as we wrap up the show here I got one question for you where do you think and and this is also a question for Ryan because I want to know like from the inner but then the outer perspective as well what do you think and maybe let's open this up to our our viewers as well who does have a bigger bias against is it the SEC or is it Oregon I can tell you or I'll allow you to answer first and then Ryan gets to answer okay it's it's organ and a lot of people say they don't understand they don't understand why I hate organ so much so I'll tell you guys I don't hate Oregon I don't hate Oregon it's more of a sibling rivalry right me and my brother were 15 months apart we lived together for a long time like well of course we grew up together but like we were like twins people thought we were twins he went to Oregon it's just a sibling rivalry each other all the time this it's so bad like it goes into other sports it goes into baseball basketball women's anytime organ is playing and it's just the fact that they never won a national championship I throw that at them all the time I played NCAA Football last night and I beat him with UMass and I said take your uniforms back to Eugene and I sent him a picture like it's it's legit organ like it and it's not hate it's just sibling Riv and I I he watches the show and so he'll see it and I'll get a text message like there you go Oregon hate again like it's it's it's more spping ring so I'll tell you it's organ love it I can't I'm trying to think if I've seen it before but I better not ever see you in any Nike gear you better be Adidas who me no SC is a SC is a lifelong uh lifelong Nike school because they were on the board with Phil n yeah that's true yeah but let's be real Coach there's only one Nike school okay and everybody else is just sort of along for the ride okay pays as their but there's one Nike school there's one Nike School Nike was invented at one school one more thing and we'll talk about it we'll Cliffhanger this but here's the best thing about the college football this is one thing that's going to eliminate it if you're a top 12 team and you have a top prospect for the NFL draft he's gonna play in the next game he's no longer going to sit out that means you're going to see a lot more NFL prospects in bowl games now they no longer sit out of bowl games because the goal is the national championship that's where if the NCAA use their mind like this on other things this will be a great organization but they refuse to do it that's why they're on the brink of Extinction five years this won't even be here we'll be trying to figure out how these independent teams are gonna have a championship that's all I have you guys can take it however you want to take it but that's just what I think about it yeah but'll be good but I appreciate you guys that was a good one the number 23 Trojans are getting ready to play the Tigers we'll be getting ready to talk about that pretty soon we a we have a guest on our next show LS we have a guest on our next show lsub wrer that would be fun I have a lot of I have a lot of questions did you know that did you know that sc's record against LSU is like way above 500 just joking but no it is though I just looked it up before the show when was the last time Essie played LSU uh I don't remember but L USC is one and0 versus LSU love that the game was probably in 1942 yeah it probably was and and and did you know that USC made the SEC and anybody who wants to argue that I dare you to argue that because there's history behind that USC made the SEC so without USC there will be no SEC today I appreciate you guys coming on the show I appreciate all the fans guys it'll be fun we'll have a LSU beat Rider on Thursday we can't wait to have that happen you guys know how thank you guys for watching it's the BET online solution Troy podcast you guys know how it goes live free fight on
