MLB The Show LIES About Pitch Speeds - How Fast They ACTUALLY Are

it's been said a million times that hitting a baseball is one of the hardest things to do in sports and these days it's harder than ever you've got players riding the pine their whole career and still slinging 100 like it's nothing a 100 mph pitch in real life takes just 375 milliseconds to travel from the pitcher's hand to the catcher Mt literally the blink of an eye but here's what I want to know does MLB The Show really capture that speed sure the game says you're throwing 100 but does 100 mph fast ball in the game feel the same as it does in real life well today we're going to put that to the test I'm counting frame by frame and breaking down the actual pitch speeds and MLB the show not just what it says and comparing them to reality we're going to start from the lowest slowest difficulty and work our way all the way up to the highest difficulty with maxed out speed sliders and seeing how fast these pitches truly are but first we got to cover the math it's 60 ft 6 in from the mound to home plate but once you account for the pitcher stride and how long their arm is on average the ball is released about 55 ft from home plate in this video I'm going to determine the pitch speed in the game by counting how many frames it takes to go from the pitcher's hand to home plate so I'm going to have to do a few conversions I said earlier in the video it takes a 100 mph fast ball just 375 milliseconds to get to home plate so first let's cover how we come to that number it's 100 mph that converts to 146 ft per second you pull out your handy dandy calculator 55 ft divide that by 146 point 667 ft per second and you get this many seconds 3749 and9 so 375 milliseconds as long as you know how many millisecs it takes for a pitch to get to home plate you can work all this backwards and get to the miles an hour the only other conversion you have to do is that I'm filming in 60 frames a second so you just have to know every frame is 1 160th of a second so every frame is this many seconds if we multiply by a th000 every frame is 16.67 milliseconds so if I have a pitch and it takes 30 frames to get to home plate you multiply 30 by the 16 milliseconds and you get 500 milliseconds which is5 seconds and like I said you just work backwards you do the 55 ft divided .5 seconds you'd get 110 ft per second you plug 110 ft per second in there and boom it would be a 75 mph pitch now that we know how to do that all that's left to do is count the frames for each pitch the last caveat to this is where am I starting the first frame and ending the last frame well as you can see right here the ball is still in his hand this one it's less clear but this is going to be my starting frame so right after this one it looks like it's just leaving his finger right there so I'm saying that is frame zero this is frame one and as far as where it's ending we're going to go right here if you look the ball does stay on the screen for a few more frames but that's clearly over the plate past the plate and if you look where it shows the ball finish it shows it right in the middle right when it's right in the middle it's about I don't know I'm I'm a little torn of counting this one cuz you can definitely hit this ball ball we can also this looks a little late actually I'm going to go right there that's going to be the ending frame and we'll be measuring the frames in between up first we're playing on beginner the lowest difficulty and we're turning the pitch speed sliders all the way down this is as slow as it gets that was incredibly slow in fact it was a full 50 frames which calculates to 44.99 mph in real life next we're going to bump the sliders back up but leave it on beginner difficulty this one actually surprised me it went up a full 10 frames we went from 50 frames with the sliders down all the way up to 40 frames just by putting the sliders back and that is a jump of nearly 12 mph it is 5624 mph next we bump the difficulty up to Amur that pitch right there was 38 frames just a little bit faster that comes to 59.2 2 mph hour up next is miners that one 36 frames a little quicker still the equivalent of 6247 mph this is where it gets a little weird I bump it up to rookie which is actually the lowest difficulty that you can play online in this pitch although it was still 100 mph it was 37 frames which is one frame longer than the miners speed I recounted it now I mean I get it there's like I don't know if you guys know about like frame rules and speed spe running and stuff like the game runs at what it runs at my display is what runs at 60 frames a second it could have been something in between I don't know it is what it is 37 frames 60.76 mph next up is veteran and we get the trend back in the right direction that one was 35 frames the equivalent of 64.2 7 mph after that we have Allstar hey now I'm pretty interested in this one because this is what I usually play at I'm not that great at the game but I like playing on allar are and that one is 34 frames the equivalent of 66.2 mph now we're bumping it up to the big dog difficulties Hall of Fame is it going to get faster no turns well yeah but turns out a Hall of Fame fast ball is only one frame faster than an All-Star fast ball 33 frames the equivalent of 6817 mph and now the difficulty where all the try hards and the sweats live and breathe we're going to Legend difficulty this is the fastest you will see a fast ball in normal [Music] gameplay and that right there was 31 frames from the pitcher's hand to home plate 72.56 M an hour now it's time to bump the sliders all the way up if you remember just changing the sliders on beginner gave it a whole 10 frames if we gained 10 frames from bumping these sliders up that would make it 21 frames and it would in fact be faster in the game than a real life 100 mph fast ball if it goes 10 frames faster so how much faster is it that pitch is the fastest you can see in the game and it was 27 frames the equivalent of 83.3 mph now that's crazy a lot of people if you were to play this game on Legend with these sliders completely maxed out it feels practic Ally impossible to hit the ball and yet it is a full 16% slower than what these players are seeing in real life if that doesn't put it into perspective I don't know what does but if you're me none of it matters because I'm the best there has ever been get that out of here I don't care if it's 83 mph or 183 mph I'm the best thanks for watching see you guys later [Music] oh
