welcome to Buffalo Camp day recap I'm Thad Brown along with AJ Feldman we have finished the first three-day stanza of Camp day off tomorrow I know you at home don't really care that much but for those of us who are here every day reaching a day off is always a milestone worth mentioning the players like it too I'm sure for sure 100% but people don't understand I tell people this all the time for these guys this is work for them and when you at home get to a day off you like it these guys have gotten to a day off they're liking it just as much all right let's talk about the number one story from camp on Friday and that was the not only visit from Kim Pula the co-owner who had the uh medical issue um Cardiac Arrest A couple of summers ago um she's been at Camp every day she watches from SUV this is something she did for a few days of Camp last year but she's been here every day so far well after practice on Friday she walked out of the SUV and came onto the field I talked to a couple players about what happened and and they said that she essentially broke down the Huddle you know bills on 312 three that kind of thing and I didn't get much more in terms of details that the players all wanted to keep everything else to themselves totally understand that the universal response I got from the guys I talked to was that they were very happy not only to see her but Seer doing so well Seer having improved so much and it was an inspiration Dion Dawkin said you know this is still mama bear for us so no matter what happened on the field we're going to get to all that the end of practice was a a very good day not only for this team but for this organization and everybody's a part of it yeah and last year there was a big story the first day she came out like it was a big deal no one had you know she hadn't really um appeared in quote unquote the public eye before then this this year she's been there every single day so far and just to see that growth great to see and also like you said um you know the players talking about how she's still you know a present she's still felt she's still a part of the organization in a sense because you know she's she's lost some of her her duties obviously due to um you know trying to recover from her medical condition but just great to see her out there today all right let's move on to the practice then and not a a notable practice I think in any particular direction number one place I want to start was with a guy who was with the number ones today for a significant amount that's rookie Cole Bishop who didn't play every team snap with the first team but played darn near 80 90% of them didn't Stand Out notably in either direction um was fine you know no one's catching passes over his head he didn't make any interceptions there's no tackling so it's not like he can lay somebody out seemed like he was okay but the fact that he's getting those reps you know after two days ago he's running a third team drill and Shawn mcder stopping the drill to what seemed like let Cole Bishop know where to stand I I think was a good jump for him now look it doesn't mean he's won the job but at least for one day you know you've got a second round pick who's running with the ones and they've done this in the past obviously you know a position battle they rotate guys through I think the the big one we remember from from last year middle linebacker the first I think there were four guys in the competition everybody got one turn balen Spectre even got a turn as you know the starting linebacker and we all thought is he in this competition rest the camp goes by he doesn't sniff the first team so is that that type of situation obviously only time will tell but the fact that he's in this competition to start uh you know it's a good sign again anytime that you see a guy moving up the depth chart it's it's a good move for them I would think that on sun day he probably doesn't take as many first team reps but at least for this day and the fact that he didn't embarrass himself either I think was a positive sign for the rookie more positive signs defensive line was pretty good today um the first two days were not overly impressive and again this is a defensive line unless Von Miller suddenly recovers his you know allp proo form there really isn't a star on this group you got decent guys you know grego is solid AJ Essa is solid I like Dewan smoo as a depth guy for sure but there isn't much that's spectacular about the D line outside of Ed Oliver and dcoin Jones but today Greg rouso had a sack there were multiple balls tipped at the line Josh Allen balls that were tipped in the line um there was another play where aj pessa blew up a screen pass which is something he suddenly I mean last year there was no one in the league you would not want to throw a swing pass against than 57 for the bills but overall this was a productive and encouraging day for the defensive line yeah Russo really nice day like you said the would be sack tipped one of those balls also o blew a a run play kind of early on in practice uh Dwayne Carter had a really nice play uh beat a center of guard on the second team would have been a wouldbe sack if they can touch the uh you know touch the quarterback and you know there's no pads so you don't want to put too much stock offensive versus defensive line but it was nice to see you know the dline kind of win a day even when there's really not a ton to be won at this point in training camp winning is winning and you're right but yeah I think definitely a a giant grain salt with any practice doesn't include pads I don't even like during Camp days until they put the pads on I'm not watching the line either line much it's mostly the outside guys because it's even with a line on the field it's a glorified seven on seven drill when you don't have the pads on negative for today so remember that executive that said Josh Allen was underrated this was the practice for that overrated I'm sorry overrated said he was overrated this was the practice for that guy and look so Josh Allen had three interceptions in a four play span towards the end of practice he also had a ball earlier in the day that frankly Mike Edwards should have intercepted and just flat out dropped before anyone goes overboard with takes about this practice and all the interceptions right right he's actually looked good we'll W get to that in a minute too all four plays the three interceptions and the one Edwards dropped seem to be miscommunications just Josh throws the ball one way his receiver is another um the one I think the second one well let's let's go one by one the first one was M Hollands on the sideline uh uh K Carl Jones our colleague from wib in Buffalo thought that Holland was kind of leaning more towards a sideline route and Josh threw a straight go ball that Taylor rat basically fielded like a punt for an interception the second one two plays later was mvs straight down the field this one looked like Josh saw a deep one-on-one just gave his guy a shot what happened was Christian Benford had great position all the way I mean just a a superb job of playing one-on-one deep ball corner and made the interception the uh third one was a shorter pass like a hitch or a a slant and Josh threw it straight to KY elim our guess was that Keon Coleman ran the wrong route because Keon Coleman was the guy that Josh Allen sought out um immediately after the play the first one of Mike Edwards might have bet a ball that was just poorly thrown behind Dawson Knox bottom line though AJ lot of interceptions but it seems like more stuff early in Camp than any just in terms of this is where we are in Camp than anything to be worried about yeah for sure I mean there working out the Kinks um and and also we're just guessing like those first two passes they just might have been bad balls because you know M Hollins was open it's fair and and you know even if quote unquote Hollands runs the right route Taylor R was right there so you know that would have been a force anyway it could have been a miscommunication and a bad decision yeah for sure so you know these things are going to happen um I will say you know if we want to you know go to the other side seven on seven offense looked really good in the first uh you know team drill of practice this Dalton concate had a really nice back shoulder catch Keon Coleman beat Douglas on kind of a go rout uh towards the right Sidelines two really big plays there Dawson Knox had a nice catch over the middle that seemed more just good uh you know route combinations he kind of routed himself open Shakir had a nice rub route uh basically the offense went six for uh five for six or six for seven in that drill the only one that was more on the defense was uh just good coverage all around and it would have been a sack if you know people were trying to tackle Allen um but good offense early and you know the defense definitely fought back which is what you expect in training camp one other thing about the offense today that we we noticed a little more mixing and matching when it came to the receiver combinations um you saw uh KJ hamler get a first team rep um you know Chase Claypool has been in and out he had a couple opportunities today you know you saw your your steady dose of you know molland and CLE Shakir and Curtis Samuel along with Keon um but not only that there was you know uh and we've seen a lot of this was just today but something to to bring up in this discussion a lot of varied formations guys in motion things being moved around and we were talking about this in the sideline and you know I think what people are going to see from this bills offense is because there isn't an Elite Talent or at least we don't think there is maybe Kean Coleman develops Curtis Samuel works with a great quarterback who whatever because there's not an obvious Elite Talent the way these guys are going to have to get open is through misdirection through defenses questioning what's going to happen if you condense a formation put more receivers tight close to the line of scrimmage there's a question about is this a run block is this a guy who's going to run behind the formation and go out to the other side there's more things you can do with confusing a defense than if you just split a guy out wide and say go beat the guy across from you yeah and this is what you know we expect this is kind of what sea mcder talked about on the first day with you know his comments about putting away the silverware they've got all these pieces they're going to try them out in as many ways possible get them in the slot get them in motion there's a lot of motion I mean what percentage of plays would you think so far in Camp have Motion in them 90% maybe like it's well over 75 it's it's pretty rare to see a play where they just walk up to the line of scrimmage and like all right let's run ourselves a play here and we'll see how much that carries over certainly it's a new offensive coordinator But Ken dorsy we saw a lot more of that last year in training cam kind of in the pre-season it went away a little bit it definitely ramped down a little bit so does it continue with this Pace uh who knows but they're trying a lot of things you know they're keeping these uh formations compact they're trying guys out in the backfield things like that so you know I think you know they know who they have they know what they need to do to be a successful offense and they're trying things out right now I don't know if they do know that you know I really think that I think I mean what you mean about I they know that like you said they know that they have to scheme guys to get yes I think they understand the general situation but how to make it work is the question and yeah I think that they are trying things out and look this is what training camp is for anyway but I think that trying out process could very well go you know deeper into the season I mean they're going to have a plan they're going to have a best laid plan finger quote and they're going to roll it out and teams are going to get three four weeks of film on it and start to say okay well I can counter you this way this way and this way do the bills have enough brain power with Joe Brady and do they have enough talent to be able to respond when teams get a look at what that best laid plan is that to me will very likely be the the more determining factor of how this season goes offensively than whatever Joe Brady's got in his head in July yeah and they might carry this into the regular season but for right now they got to figure out like who their fifth and sixth wide receivers are so you know KJ hamler uh Chase clay poool you know Marquez Valdez scandling probably safe on the team whatever uh you know your shorters your Shavers this is the point where they got to figure out all right who's our fifth piece who's our sixth piece to take into the season and then we can still figure things out some more real quick so we've had the the three days of practice we're going to get a break now it's such a small part of training camp but let's do it anyway if I had to give you the wide receiver depth chart I think Hollands and The Big Three Guys Shakir um Keon and Samuel are in yeah I think I think to me MBs is in unless there are two other guys that totally demand he's off the team and that has not happened through three days so he's still in certainly by resume he would be but he hasn't really stood out he has not but but like stalemate is a win for mvs yeah I think there's a sixth spot that makes the team who would that guy be right now if you had to put a guy on the team through three days I'd probably say Chase Claypool he seems to be getting a lot of important snaps and you know he's got the pedigree potential and honestly probably less of a chance you can sneak him onto a practice squad as opposed to a a hamler a short or a shaver so that could be a deciding factor there yeah I think so but I think that guy's got to be able to play special teams too and I know Clay's been involved in that I no idea if he's doing well or not I agree I will say if there a dark horse right now I put Terrell Shavers at the top of that list I think of the other receivers he's done the best job of making some plays but I agree with you I think it would be Claypool right now and there is a chance that Andy Isabella Andy Isabella Wows so much in these new kickoff formats where he gets a roster spot that way as well like we said that last receiver is going to be a special teams contributor one way or the other all right let's do turkey burgers these are our standout players plays from the day I will let you go first we'll give one to Tyler bass off the top uh call A an up and down spring to say the least he had some really rough practices in there obviously he had a less than Stellar end of the regular season in the playoffs the first real kicking opportunity that was in front of the whole team and pressure in front of fans Etc 6 for six none were crazy long he maxed out at about 49 yards went from 28 all the way up to 49 but 6 for six kicker turkey burger all right I'm going to give one to Cole Bishop who uh not only got hit reps with the first team today today but when the bills went one-on-one with linebackers and safeties against running backs and tight ends Bishop Drew Dalton concade for a one-on-one rep and I thought he did a pretty darn good job now look he didn't win because concade made the catch but it's look that drill is leaning and slanted towards the receiver anyway because they have the entirety of the field to use but the coverage was good not great good not preventing a catch um but still enough for me to give him a turkey burger I was impressed with the rep I'll take Greg rouso for the aforementioned reasons gets a sack blows up a run play uh tips the pass a good practice from Gregory cell I go back to that linebacker safety against running back tight end drill Dion Jones had a couple of really nice reps um he won against darington Evans on the first one and then the second one he absolutely Stone Cold locked up James Cook you know and when you can do that to the best uh receiving option in that drill not named dton concade I was impressed and Deon Jones is a veteran linebacker I think he's a safety net for this team you know if Terrell Bernard or Matt Milano get injured that you don't have to go to a rookie or a young guy like he did last year I think he's got a pretty good chance to make the team and he helped himself out today and I'll give one to Jamarcus Ingram in the uh the receiver versus DB's portion of the one-on-one he had a really nice pass break up on Marquez Valdez scandling like you mentioned it's a drill to favors the offense so anytime a defense really steps up and make a nice play I'll give one to him Ingram too is in a battle to make this team I mean right now KY elim is the only real depth guy you can count on so there is certainly a roster spot at corner that's available and he's a guy that for brief moments at the time they trusted him in in important scenarios last year almost by you know him being the last guy left but he does actually have some experience and he has an edge up because of that all right that'll do it for us today once again you can always watch and listen to Buffalo Camp day recap at rochesterfirst.com on YouTube and wherever you get your podcast we are off tomorrow for Saturday we'll be back on Sunday practice number four another 9:45 a.m. start and unfortunately AJ it's going to be 90° all next week so uh the the comfort
