akilo Charles would say that yes content cre creators should be held to the same ethical standards as traditional media while ad will say will say no content creators should not be held to the same Nigeria sorry should content creators be held to the same ethical standards as traditional media ailo Sean Charles is saying yes well your time starts now should content creators be held to the same ethical standards as traditional media that's too formal what this question is asking are cont creators capable of being truthful and responsible or is it too much to ask because to me it's already criminal enough the fact that they are reaching the same amount of views if not more than traditional media and yet they can still post whatever hogw just to get more views because they are not regulated by any guidelines that is pathetic beautiful day to the panel of judges and everyone listening I am a from CMS grammar school and today I'm making I'm here to make you guys understand why content creators should be held to the same ethical standards as traditional media and here are my points one huge crowd audience two spread of misinformation three misleading infotainment four influence of and public opinion five responsibility to public interest Six National crisis and seven International standards to begin with his huge crowd audience Mr be is an American influencer that has an average of 56 million views per YouTube video I show speed is another American stream that has an average of 3 million views per YouTube live video and we have hundreds of thousands of other content creators that have at least 100,000 followers on social media platform so knowing this the real question should be why they be regulated considering the fact that they are reaching these people daily and they can say whatever they like because they not being regulated they're not being regulated then again spread of misinformation Wildfire spread by 14.27 mph but one thing I'm certain that spreads faster is fake information do you know ACC to an MIT study it shows that fake information spreads six times faster than original information I'm not done PE Research Center also showed that 59% of social media users spread information without verifying its accuracy then again misleading infotainment you see what content creators do nowadays is to present information in entertaining ways so at the end whether it's right or wrong they are not accountable and what they are doing is undermining people's understanding of important issues which is just sad then again influence on public opinion nothing and I repeat nothing has more influence on public opinion than contents creators and social media influencers like what happened in the United States presidential election 2016 the the outcome of the election was eventually influenced by some information that kept us circulating around the media then again responsibility to public interest some people may ask that why should they be kept to standards when that's not what they signed up for but what you do not know is that this influence that has been grown has grown into a responsibility a responsibility to protect public interest and I personally do not believe that anybody that is exposed to the 5 billion users of the internet according to statista should be the one damaging their welfare then then again National crisis the co9 pandemic is a good example of this according to the World Health Organization because of fake information that was spread about vaccinations and other things they lost a lot more lives that is worsening a crisis and not only can it do that but it can also begin one considering the fact that it began the Rwandan Genocide of 1994 because of buers opinions from media sources arrest my fari in one of his numerous content online when he said Nigeria is a place where saying the truth victimizes you and promise me to ask my opponent this sent questions is the media not supposed to be the voice of the masses isn't it meant to be a sacal to for commenting on the political and economic progress of a Nation also has the subjection of traditional media to the soal ethical standard but about any good rather than silencing the voice of a common man on this note I like to extend a very warm greetings to the chairman panel of Judges aqu Tim keeper ever attentive audience and of course point to oppos this notion first C creators are modern satirical to in our society so subjecting them to any form of ethical standard is a capital no for me because if C creators are subjected to the same ethical standard as traditional media then the government would have succeeded in carrying everyone into their sh because of the because the concept of satire would have been completely relegated to the background second is it not funny how the freedom of expression is being gradually taken away today calls on radio and television programs are now being gathered on what to say and what not to say in the name of being civil with their words content creators in their own way have had a way of keeping political leaders on their TOS by highlighting their ills and excesses in a humorous manner thereby making the people more acquainted with the happening in their environment third different intent and audience engagement content creators content creators have a more direct and personal relationship with their audience thereby engaging in content that are more informal opinion driven and Community Focus traditional media are expected to maintain um to maintain um object ity and Broad public responsibility making the ethical standard they adhere to less applicable to the personalized content produced by content creators furthermore Creator diversity and representation Cent creators represent a wide range of languages cultures and perspective that traditional media often overlooks imposing traditional media ethics on content creators can unite content thereby reducing the diversity of viewpoints available to Global audiences particularly those in under represented communities also economic disparities traditional media Outlets often have have access to significant resources for fact checking content oversight and Lego Council content creators particularly those in the um in the early stage of their career lack this um resources which which holding them to the same ethical standard could disproportionately um bden these creators thereby disc discouraging small voices from being heard in conclusion if content creators are subjected to the same ethical standard as traditional media in this Modern Age of Information Technology then the level of the level of information we received to the m to the masses will drastically reduce I believe my oppers will agree with me that content creators and bloggers like popular D freeze who in blog and the host of others bring undiluted news and pieces of information to everyone in an enjoyable manner I hope entertainment rather than news or serious content this Statistics reflect this Statistics reflect a clear distinction in audience expectation between content creators and traditional media suggesting that the ethical standard applied to this traditional media may not be appropriate or may not be appropriate unnecessary for Content creators you also mentioned that content creators post just to get more views what exactly is posting for is it not is it not actually to get more view yes you said that these content creators don't care whether the um the news is accurate or not but do you know that subjecting them to ethical standard will just be like an infrigement on fundamental human right because anybody can be a content creator and can just come out and say something but people have to follow this ethical standard to um to say some things which is not right you also mentioned a PE research saying that misinformation spreads faster um you that you said a um according to pet misinformation spreads Faster by 59% but according to that same P reset 61% of content of social media users factures content before believing it you also mentioned National crisis and you gave an example to the covid-19 period then I'll give you this story on the third of August 2022 the national broadcasting commission finds several media Outlets including multi Choice Nigeria and five um and others 5 million naira each for broadcasting on a documentary on banditry in zanara cting violations to Nigerian broadcasting code however this this um this media Outlets challenged this um this F in court and the court subsequently Haled mbc's action given this um incident one may ask how can NBC justify imposing fins on media outlets for talking on a particular issue like that on in a particular issue like bandry when um and while claiming to upold ethical standard ethical standard it makes no sense you also said that um um um one one time you mentioned a um state in America election that is due to the media um the but which media you did not mention which media is it social media is it um is it YouTube is it Tik Tok that got this thing no and a report by um also um um you also talked about these people spreading false lives but YouTube um YouTube already put Community guidelines on their platform resulting in the removal of over 6 million videos in 2023 alone as according to their transparency report content creators is content creat creators does but you are forgotten that content creators utilize hashtags and trending topics they produce and share valuable relevant and consistent Contex they share passion interest and hobbies they build personal brand and identity and you sit down there and say that these content creators should be held to the same ethical standard as traditional media my open if I may ask you where is your conscious it makes no sense let's not for let's not forget that these content creators bring entertainment to us and not news so anyone that will be going to social media to look for news or going to go at listen to content creators for news actually doesn't actually doesn't know what they are doing I make bold to say that uh sorry before the opinion gotten from traditional media is usually polished this is because of the welfare of the people they trying to protect the welfare of the people they don't want anybody to be damaged because already happened a lot of times we have seen some things like beauty standards and have made a lot of people dissatisfied with their bodies so that is exactly why some videos and all that have you know that a research showed that Community guidelines on YouTube have Community guidelines on YouTube are not that effective and 70% of flagged videos in YouTube 2021 was not actually taken down so that means it's not even if effective then again Community guidelines once again do not does not Community guidelines are not effective in the sense that they are different from ethical standards Community guidelines don't stop people from doing dangerous pranks and causing violence which is one of the points I'm going to explain later they don't stop people from causing violence violence country that likes to keep up with International standards and if they're going to want to keep up with this one then they are going to have to implement that standard just as traditional media is following we have countries like UK in India France Singapore that have already implemented this standard for Content creation so why not Nigeria then again polarization in societies polarization is the division of a group of people because they they believe in different things they listen to different people and they have different beliefs now I don't need to start preaching on the disadvantages of this Unity but what we need to know is that polarization is bound to occur when this when these um cont content creators are not regulated then again citizen journalism this is the trend right now everybody wants to become a journalist everybody wants to tell people about what is going on in their society but what they do not know is that according to the panom papers from 2016 the traits of Journalism required are truthfulness transparency and accountability and if you don't have this trait then it can lead to Global tax evasion and money laundering just as it did in 2016 then again gain content monetization you know what similarity between content creators and traditional media is the monetizing of their platform the fact that they're having personal gain means they should be able to uphold the responsibility to they should be able to uphold the responsibility to be regulated and follow regulations just as traditional media follows regulations then again uh sponsorship transparency you see one side of it is gaining a lot of money and then the other side is the transparency behind the sponsorship I cannot one day talk about my buyer's opinions on things and say in create things and next day come to promote a business how would that business grow when I don't even have audience trust again and again avoidance of public harm few years back there was a popular pranker that was arrested TR and Trinity because of his wild pranks on people I said this earlier he usually does things like P on people or remove their wigs or even go as far as scanning them because of their dressing I assure you that if these content creators had been regulated by then Not only would this not happen but if it happened then then they will be punished under serious crime cases then again cultural impact I don't need to D much on this because Nigeria is a country with a lot of cultural diversity and just one statement one or two statement can disrupt the national Unity we have seen a lot of things such as people talking about tribalistic State same tribalistic statement like um IO people are better in this and EUR people are better in this and all that kind of things they can lead to disunity once again then again low self-esteem contest creators sets these things that we call beauty standards and I've made a lot of people dissatisfied with their bodies and do unimaginable things just to cope up with this cope with this fake standard and this is not what we need ladies and gentlemen in conclusion I just believe that still thinking that these um Contex
