okay I don't know did anything happen last night not at all well of course we all know that KLA Harris and Donald Trump they faced off in the first and perhaps only scheduled debate in the race to the White House and they touched on everything last night Reproductive Rights to war and as expected there were a lot of memorable moments sound bite everywhere so we're going to talk about our standout moments um and just what kind of jumped out at with the debate last night well do you guys know the movie A Few Good Men well you may remember how Tom Cruz as the lawyer lawyer slowly and methodically gets Jack Nicholson as Colonel Jessup to admit to his crime like yes I called that c run and so the debate last night kind of reminded me of that with kamla playing Tom Cruz with her lawyer and attorney um Governor privileges showing in their entire entirety in her slowly and Method methodically getting Donald Trump to say all the things that they wanted him to say everyone's talking about this she baited him she she put the bait out there like a little child don't touch that cookie and he grabbed the cookie every single time it was so easy it was so easy and the point that where it became the clearest to me is when she was sort of goating him about oh your crowd sizes are so small they're so tiny no people leave early cuz they're so boring and she said what you need I'm paraphrasing is someone who will put you first who will care about you and then his response he just talked about Donald Trump and how big is I almost felt sorry for him yeah CU he was he was felt like he was so outplaced that's true what do you think Farah okay so my take is going to be a bit more controversial hell yeah my first to have back after this but anyway look I I think she won the brown girl in me was like welling up when she was talking about abortion and everything I was like yeah but did she really win and I'll I'll explain why what was her goal yesterday her goal was to get that sliver of undecided voters that 10 to 15% in those seven states that matter and her goal was to get men her goal was to get rural men men who feel disenfranchised who feel like four years ago they were better off than they are now who feel like the elites don't understand them who are condescending who make fun of them and that's what was happening on stage and it was easy and it was warranted yeah but she was it for somebody who sees themselves in Donald Trump even a little bit to have her even laugh because remember she's also there was the mics were off so that was her factchecking was laugh and the how are they going to feel is that going to make a difference it's true it's true this is you come I don't know if people know this about you Teddy Wilson you come from the political Circle Once Upon a Time yeah a whole lifetime ago I worked briefly in politics and in messaging which so I think from a messaging in like political analysis point of view last night was really interesting because obviously the conventional wisdom is the presidential de debates don't move the needles much either polls or on Election Day and so I'm not sure if yesterday the either candidate moved the needle at all but I think one of the metrics for evaluating success in a debate is do you control the terrain you know do you control the agenda and the issues that are brought up are you deflecting your weaknesses and doubling down on your strengths and I think if that's a metric for success I think her strategist today and maybe even some Republican strategist privately would probably think that she had a good night right because she that's the measure yeah she she controlled the debate she did I thought in that first minute uh Trump had a bit of a different uh tenor and tone and demeanor as he did at the beginning of his speech at the Republican National Convention but then he pretty quickly he becomes himself right yeah yeah well said yeah as you mentioned it seemed like she was pretty effective at trolling him and getting him not to have to land strong attacks on some issues that she went into this debate with some weaknesses on I'm just basing it on what the polls say right their pull out of Afghanistan their handling of the economy immigration but every time he had an opportunity to land an attack she goated him into being on the defensive about another issue so just from like a political strategy point of view it was a fascinating night would you have been proud of her like if you were on prepping her you prepped her I think so yeah yeah iin I definitely would have been and I think yeah yeah I think it was an interesting night it was it was listen there's a saying out there and probably this comes from the political world is that a strong debate performance doesn't necessarily win a debate but a poor performance can end you which we saw and that's why Joe Biden is not there and why Kamala is there because Trump didn't win that last debate with with Joe but Joe lost it and therefore we have Kamala so was this a win it's interesting to hear you say um that kamla did she succeed at getting those new voters because listen we all know who Trump is voters in the US know who he is is he going to grow his base I don't think so I think if you're going to vote for Trump you're probably still voting for Trump but kala is an unknown to a lot of people so she had this opportunity kind of introduced herself and the prosecutor in her came out with all of its Glory last night right she very methodical methodical and I call her landmine comma because she would lay the line landmine down you call it a cookie I call it a landmine but Trump saw her drop a landmine like Putin is gonna eat you for lunch and then he's like oh there's a landmine and let me talk about people's pets get she was so Adept at throwing him off and then the real Trump came out and we saw it perhaps in no better way than when he said this in Springfield they're eating the dogs the people that came in they're eating the cats they're eating they're eating the pets of the people that live there and this is what's happening um guess what that's not happening yeah yeah but she was so Adept at laying a landmine every time you think that started when they walk she said Harris stage that moment absolutely absolutely good a good one that I think should be mentioned and I know you've moderated debates as of I political debates in this country the one thing that was interesting was this is the first time okay the first time in history in terms of a trump debate that he was fact checked he was fact checked in real time and a lot of people that I think that's wonderful but I was always told when I was moderating the job of the moderator is not to fact check okay there's me I think at the provincial at the provincial debate but the job the job is not to fact check it is for the opponent to fact check right it's not my job to fact check and I think for people who think the media is biased already and everybody's ganging up on Trump I think that just goes right into their narrative yeah true that could not actually help the
