return to the deaths of NHL star Johnny gutro and his brother killed by a drunk driver family members now posting tributes as we learn more about what happened Dam here with the details good morning D good morning so Johnny was known as Johnny hockey and more than anything he's being remembered now for his love of family and especially his brother and now their family speaking out about the bond they shared and how they will be missed by so many this morning tributes are pouring in for NHL star Johnny GD and his brother Matthew after their shocking deaths the brothers were cycling around 8:30 p.m. Thursday night when they were killed by an alleged drunk driver just a day before their sister was supposed to get married police say the driver 43-year-old sha Higgins was driving recklessly when he attempted to pass a slower moving vehicle on its right side hitting the brothers on bikes from behind telling investigators he had five or six Spears before the crash and failed to field sobriety test at the time the New Jersey National Guardsman was also working for a drug and alcohol abuse treatment provider his employer announced on Facebook that he was immediately placed on leave Johnny gdo started his NHL career with the Calgary Flames for nine Seasons before moving to the Columbus Blue Jackets he was a seven time All-Star during his 11 seasons in the NHL all after playing for Boston College where he was recruited with Matthew the brothers known for their close Bond if you ask us the name of our favorite players you they've got to be both boys are going to be among them me and my brother we lived in this far room over here the Blue Jackets are also remembering their star forward not only as Johnny hockey but also as a father husband son brother nephew friend teammate and role model you know I always look forward to these weekends I bring my whole family in it doesn't matter where it is and fans and loved ones are mourning the brothers we've known the kids all their lives I used to babysit him and I went to school with his mother very very nice family it's heartbreaking and they're so young Matthew's wife meline do with the couple's first child in December writes in an Instagram post best 14 years of my life I will cherish those years and you for the rest of my life Johnny leaves behind two young children his wife Meredith writes thank you for the best years of my life despite losing you I still the luckiest girl in the world to have been yours I love you so so much you are perfect some days it felt too good to be true I love every single thing about you you are my forever I can't wait to be with you again I love you so much forever and ever and the suspect is now facing vehicular homicide charges he's due back in court September 5th but the family's really focused on how Inseparable these two were with Johnny's wife posting on Instagram that they take comfort in knowing in her words they are of course in heaven together that's a tough story it's so sad so sad Diane thank you thank you
