Syracuse Football GREATLY BENEFITS After Georgia Tech Upsets Florida State | Syracuse Orange Podcast

Florida State and that means Syracuse has a golden opportunity early in the season to make their claim that they have a chance to win the conference this season so we're going to talk about why it's a great opportunity for the orange we're going to go over the new updated schedule outlook for this team because it certainly got tougher and the fact that the ACC this year is wide open or certainly it appears that way after well week zero and a reminder we are just six days away from Syracuse football season beginning against Ohio but they face Georgia Tech in week two this episode is brought to this is a Syracuse Channel and it is not my place to give you a game recap of what happened yesterday but I I saw online and including myself that we were following yesterday's Georgia Tech and Florida State game very very intently because Georgia St Georgia Tech rather is on the schedule for week two for Syracuse so I wanted to see and I'm sure many of you guys wanted to see how the yellow jackets would look against a team that many people believed was a college football playoff Contender well yesterday Georgia Tech pulls off the upset they defeat Florida State 24 to 21 the reason why this is now such a great opportunity for Syracuse and why this was an excellent outcome for the Orange is because Georgia Tech is probably going to be ranked they're probably going to be ranked in fact I would be very surprised if they weren't in my opinion what I think is going to happen is the yellow jackets will be ranked in the 20 to 25 range that's where I see that they're going to be and that means that Syracuse in the most in an unlikely fashion let's be honest I don't think many of us actually believe that Georgia Tech was going to pull off that upset is now going to face a ranked opponent in likelihood in week two of the Season that early so already this is a great opportunity and aside from really the first drive of the game which Florida State took right down the field and punched Georgia Tech in the mouth and went up eight nothing the yellow the yellow jackets controlled it they really did and if you want a full game recap of what happened I highly suggest uh checking out the other locked on channels so locked on seminal has a game recap out there locked on college football has a game recap out there but this is meant to come from a Syracuse perspective right let's talk about Haynes King the fact that he was so good against Florida State and Syracuse is gonna have a really difficult time to try and stop him he had over 50 yards on the ground yesterday last year he had over 700 yards on the ground and mind you that's including sacks because college football is wacky and they count yards that you lose on a sack as negative rushing yards so really he ran for a lot more than 700 last year same with any other quarterback I think two things can be true I think that Georgia Tech is certainly a tougher team than I thought they would be and maybe than you thought they would be but also the fact that Florida State just probably is n't as great as everyone thought that team didn't look like a college football playoff Contender and it was a neutral sight game in Ireland and Georgia Tech just beat him they just beat him and let's be honest Florida State's best player was their was their kicker that was their best player Georgia Tech I think would get a lot more love for maybe the college football playoff but the problem is they still got to go to Syracuse obviously in week two they got at Louisville they got at Virginia Tech they still got to face Miami NC State and at Georgia so their schedule is really difficult I don't think they're going to be a team that's going to win nine to 10 games but they're going to be one of those very very good seven win teams in my mind so Georgia Tech at home in week two not only is it the first ACC game of the season not only is it the first real test of the Year this is going to be a game in my opinion where they're going to face a confident ranked Georgia Tech Squad and for those wondering who Georgia Tech is facing next week they're playing Georgia State at home so they're probably going to win that one and I imagine while we shouldn't Overlook Ohio Syracuse is probably going to beat Ohio so it's setting up a 2 and0 Georgia Tech versus a 1 and0 Syracuse and it is a great opportunity for for Fran Brown for K mord and for all these guys to prove why they should be considered as a clear Dark Horse in the AC not only that let's say Syracuse beats George Tech this is something that I didn't think I was going to say up until yesterday Syracuse could be ranked after week two yes that's possible it is on the table because Georgia Tech is probably going to be a ranked team so if Syracuse beats Georgia Tech in week two the orange are probably going to be in the top 25 and just off the top of my head I believe the last time that Syracuse was ranked so early in the season was in 2019 when they were coming off that 10- win year they were ranked in the preseason top 25 they won their first game and then got promptly smacked by Maryland and we don't want to talk about that obviously so Syracuse has a chance for the first time since 2019 so that's five years to be ranked after week two and I think at minimum if they were to beat Georgia Tech if they were to beat Georgia Tech at minimum they'll receive a good number of votes for the top 25 a at minimum we obviously have to see how that game goes we we have to see how it goes but at the end of the day assuming that Syracuse handles its business against Ohio and hopefully beats Georgia Tech in week two the orange could be ranked at 2- 0 I didn't think that was going to be the case up until Georgia Tech actually beat Florida State even if this was such a great outcome for Syracuse even if Georgia Tech just kept it close because a lot of people had Georgia Tech uh spread they had the spread on it I believe it was 11 and a half it already had moved like three points in favor of Georgia Tech a lot of people were taking Georgia Tech to cover the spread against Florida State even if they kept it close we see all the time in college football teams keep keep it close against teams that they should probably lose to but they don't end up pulling off the upset and you look at it and you're like yeah you kept it close but really should we take you seriously well in this instance they didn't just keep it close they outright won the game and it was neutral sight it wasn't a home game for Georgia Tech it was a neutral sight game in Ireland the schedule just got a whole lot tougher and Syracuse might be ranked in the top 25 after week two if they can beat Georgia Tech so coming up we're going to go over the let's throw over the new schedule outlook for Syracuse football this upcoming season and I broke it up into four separate categories of tiers of games and H in the likelihood of Syracuse winning and right before I even mentioned Georgia Tech and where they are they moved up a tier in my eyes after after they beat Florida State yesterday 24 to 21 upsetting the number 10 nuls and seals you're done you're not in college football playoff conversation anymore but that's besides the point right this isn't gonna be I'm not gonna dunk on Florida State this entire episode it's a Syracuse podcast so let's go over the schedule the this first category is what I like to call the cupcake category I've mentioned it with Syracuse basketball and the cupcakes that they that they have scheduled on their schedule so there are two games in my mind that are absolute slam dunk no doubt in my mind Syracuse is going to win they're two home games it's Holy Cross at home and Yukon at home I would say that Syracuse has a 99% chance of beating Yukon and against Holy Cross I think it would be moved up to 99.999999999% so I don't know exactly how many nines I counted out but maybe if they played a million times Syracuse would lose one time against Holy Cross they're going to beat Holy Cross they're going to beat Yukon those are slam dunk cupcakes for Syracuse so we can chalk it up two wins right there for Syracuse all right this next category is where we expand a little bit there's going to be four teams in this category and this is where in my mind Georgia Tech moved up this is the quote unquote should win category where Syracuse should win these games they they they should win all four of these games I'm going to mention but for one reason or another there is an outside chance that they do lose and those four games are Ohio in week one right they should beat Ohio in week one but at the end of the day you look at the point spread I believe it's about 17 and a half on FanDuel so it wouldn't be inconceivable if Syracuse loses that game having said that I think we all expect that Syracuse should beat Ohio and I think they're they're gonna beat okay they should beat Ohio I'm picking Syracuse to beat Ohio in fact I think they're going to cover 17 and a half but it is in the range of outcomes where if literally everything goes wrong for Syracuse they could lose hopefully they don't I don't think they will all right I'm not being pessimistic so that's the shwin uh Ohio is in it obviously as I just mentioned Stanford at home is a should win and the reason why I just put that in the should win category is because Stanford is an ACC team and you don't want to overlook anyone within your conference bottom line they're in the ACCC let's not Overlook them even though they should be a bottom feeder within the conference this season at pit and on BOS and at Boston College I think are games where Syracuse should definitely win but at the same time look in conference on the road so those are not going to be easy for Syracuse this upcoming season so in total we got two cupcakes and four games where I think Syracuse should win I think worst case scenario they are absolute worst case it's 4-2 best case obviously six- 0 five- one is is possible they could lose one of the radue games at pit at BC not necessarily think but 4-2 and six- 0 is the range of outcomes here all right then we got four tossup games and this is where Georgia Tech moved up into in my mind the yellow jackets moved from a from a game I thought Syracuse should win but would be kind of a tough test to now it's a tossup I think it can go either way I think it's gonna be 5050 if I had to guess I haven't checked if if there's any money line on that game but I think Syracuse might be a slight favorite given that they are the home team but I don't even know if it's going to be like a three points Syracuse could easily be like a point and a half at home I'm not entirely sure what that spread is going to be but that's a tossup game now against Georgia Tech at UNLV we have discussed on this show that that is the toughest non-conference game on Syracuse schedule and it's not even particularly close that's the toughest one Virginia Tech at home could be a tough challenge for Syracuse that can go either way and I also will put this game in here at Cal Now cal might not necessarily be a great team but going to the West Coast I don't think is going to be easy so I'm going to put that in the tossup category for Syracuse All right so those are the toss-ups Georgia Tech at UNLV Virginia Tech at home at Cal and now this final category I'm not going to say that Syracuse is going to lose these two games but they are certainly just looking at the schedule the toughest games on the oranges schedule at NC State and Miami at home I think if you go one one in one that would be outstanding that would be terrific hopefully at minimum they can just keep it close in those games just just keep it close remember in college football unless you literally win every single game which you can there's no one saying that you can't in a power conference right style points do matter when losses are starting to be taken into account right style points matter in college so hopefully you can keep it at least close at NC State and Miami at home those certainly the tougher games on Syracuse's schedule now the good news in my mind is that if we're talking about Syracuse making a bowl game which of course I think they're going to be I'm not changing my record prediction I think they're going to go eight and four the Georgia Tech game at home is not a must-win game in my mind to at least make a bowl it's not a must-win for a bowl game because there are still six cupcakes or should win games on the schedule and if I'm being honest I think Syracuse has a greater chance of going 6-0 in those games than 6-0 in the OR than losing all six in the tough and tossup category if that makes sense to you all I'll repeat that they got six games against cupcakes or games that they should win Syracuse has a higher likelihood of going six and0 in that stretch than losing the six games all of them in the toss-up category and the tough category so I think at minimum they're going to be a bull Team and the Georgia Tech game in my mind is not going to determine whether or not Syracuse makes a bowl or not it could determine what type of bowl game that Syracuse is invited to because undoubtedly if you win you have a higher record but it's not going to determine if Syracuse actually makes a bow or not before yesterday I would have put Georgia Tech in the quote unquote should win category and then of course Yellow Jackets beat or beat the seminal so now I'm going to put them in the tossup category I think theyve earned that right they are probably going to be a ranked team it's going to be a great opportunity for Syracuse I ran a poll on Twitter which is _ Syracuse and for the most part you guys agreed with me that Georgia Tech at home is now a toss up game if we're going to talk a little bit about the college football playoff I think Syracuse is going to have to go at minimum 10 and to in the regular season and they can't have any losses against those cupcakes or should win teams okay that's the bottom line with the college football playoff but we're still so far out right now that I don't really want to talk about it too much we'll see how Syracuse does in that against Georgia Tech in week two before we start maybe to dunk on Florida Florida state for a little bit just congratulations on being the first team in ACC history so you're the first in ACC history to be in sole possession of 17th Place for those that may not know 17th Place is now last with in the ACC and I'll be honest it could not have happened to a more deserving team out there because you know I I I I felt sympathy when Florida state was left out of the college football playoff last year I I thought it was a good decision I thought it was the right decision to leave Florida State out for Alabama One Loss winning the SEC but that's besides the point I was sympathetic but then to cause all that Ruckus and to sue the ACC out of anger I'm not saying I know that Florida State wanted to leave the conference I think most people knew that it just so happened that they get left out of the college football playoff and then cause I'm not going to use the word but you know what word I'm thinking of an absolute storm they cause an absolute hissy fit all the whining and all the complaining oh Florida State's GNA come out with revenge and they lay an absolute egg they lay an absolute egg so congratulations to Florida State on being the first team ever to be 17th in the ACC well done congratulations sole possession of last place now as far as the conference Outlook overall and where Syracuse fits in it in my mind Syracuse is in the Dark Horse category now a reminder there is a new format for the college football playoff this season 12 teams are going to get invited to the college football playoff if you win a power conference outright so you if Syracuse were to win the ACC Championship game they get an automatic bid into the college football playoffs so the winner of the SEC ACC Big 10 Big 12 those four teams automatic bids in the college football playoff plus there's one more spot for the highest ranked group of five team so that's five Auto locks and then you have seven wildcard teams that will be invited the college football playoff for this upcoming season and who knows it might expand to more after this year but for now that is the case the reason why I bring that up is because well the conference is now significantly more open than we thought I think there are now two clear favorites within the ACC Clemson and Miami those are the two favorites but with Florida State losing to Georgia Tech it opens the door for a dark horse to really sneak in there to at minimum get to the conference Championship game if not win the conference outright because when I look at Florida State schedule this was such a bad loss for them they still got to face Clemson they got to go to Miami they got to go to Notre Dame as well that's tough and if they lose two of those three they're probably out of the race to finish top two within the conference so like I said the clear favorites are Clemson and Miami which opens the door for a team like Syracuse or an NC State or a Georgia Tech or even an SMU which narrowly escaped an upset against I believe Nevada last night the conference is more open with Georgia Tech beating Florida State and also I think it shows that the ACC might not be as weak as people thought I'm not GNA sit here and say that the AC is as good as the SEC it's not I'm not going to sit here and say that the ACC is as good as the Big 10 it's not but is the ACC now just some really really terrible conference I don't think so because I think that Florida state will still finish in the 8 to n Win category which is a quality season it's maybe not what they hoped but I think overall the ACC is maybe a deeper conference than we thought it would be and with Florida State seemingly out of the race to win the ACC I think it opens the door for a team like Syracuse to kind of slide their way in there with their relatively quote unquote easy schedule right to kind of sneak in there and and get one of the top two spots maybe within the conference for now if you're Syracuse do not Overlook Ohio in week one right but Georgia Tech now week two is such an enormous game the orange really have once again a great opportunity against probably a ranked Georgia Tech team to win and be r themselves if Syracuse beats Georgia Tech now in week two and we're looking at the ACC I think the orange become I think most people would consider Syracuse one of at minimum the five best teams within the conference if they can beat Georgia Tech in week two it's going to be the first test not not even the the first game where they they they they should win but no no no this is a real first test for Syracuse I'm so excited for it of course we're six days away from Syracuse's first game against Ohio like I said they can't Overlook them but man Georgia Tech at home week two is gonna have
