Did the Texans Get it Right Starting Case Keenum?

are the Texans making the correct decision with their starting quarterback against the Titans welcome into the channel I'm Cody stuts let's talk some Texans as they get ready to take on the Tennessee Titans and they get ready to start Case Keenum well let's first start with the injury report on Friday labeling CJ strad as doubtful and not out for Sunday's game against the Titans Now doubtful doesn't mean that he's going to play doubtful means that it is more likely that he's going to miss the game but if he was out and there was zero chance they would list him as out so that there would be zero chance that he's going to play now obviously if CJ strad clears concussion protocol and the Texans are comfortable starting him with no practice this week I'm on board with that CJ strout's better than Davis Mills and CJ strout is better than Case Keenum if they want to put him out there even if he hasn't practiced and executed the game plan over this week he's the franch QB if he's cleared and he finishes concussion protocol and he can play in the game play him in the game but I don't believe that's going to be the case we looked at two situations earlier this year Brock pie and Derek Carr as quarterbacks that played shortly after entering the concussion protocol and CJ strad is behind them and their timelines and what they were able to do when they were able to get back on the field so it doesn't seem likely CJ strad is going to play against the Titans again if he clears concussion protocol and they can play him they should play CJ stad but without CJ stad I along with many others had expected Davis Mills to be the backup quarterback in large part because that's how the Texans operated the majority of this season Davis Mills was in the quarterback competition with CJ Stout Davis Mills lost the quarterback competition to CJ strout and ended up as qb2 the Texans frequently had two active quarterbacks on the roster CJ strad and Davis Mills when strad was out of the game Davis Mills got those opportunities in practice he was the second quarterback to take snaps and this past week in the portions of practice open to the media Davis Mills was taking the first snaps at the quarterback spot for the Texans the Texans have operated the entirety of this season as Davis Mills is the backup quarterback and I would start Davis Mills if I was the Houston Texans now obviously I Cody stuts don't get to see every bit of practice I don't get to see how deep each of these two backup quarterbacks are into the system and I'll get to why I believe the Texans are starting Case Keenum here in a second but here's my concern Case Keenum is here on the Texans for his mind not for his body and I don't say that to uh degrade Case Keenum or act like he doesn't have anything left in the tank but watching him in training camp watching him in some of the practices there's just not a lot of juice left in case keenum's arm certainly nowhere to the level that Davis Mills has now obviously with Davis mills's live arm come some of the issues that we've seen over the past couple of years where he overthrows wide receivers where the accuracy is a problem is an issue for Davis Mills but as far as being able to make every single throw that the Texans have showcased this season while I don't believe Mills can make all of them I believe Mills can make more of those throws with his arm strength and arm Talent at this portion of his career than where Case Keenum is so I would have gone with Davis Mills and that's what I expected to be because that's what the Texans had showcased all season long now KPRC is reporting that Case Keenum is going to get the nod the veteran has started two games in the past three Seasons he's been inactive for most of this year the last real game action that he saw was in the preseason and so Keenum is going to get the nod for the Texans and I believe this is about taking care of the football and not trying to do too much with the football since 2017 now Cas keenum's bounced around on a couple of teams and as I mentioned he only started two games over the past three years but T since 2017 k Keenum has thrown 28 interceptions Davis Mills has thrown 25 interceptions over the past two seasons that he's played so he takes care of the ball Case Keenum does better than Davis Mills so I understand that aspect of the conversation I also talked about the arm strength and the ability to make all the throws I do wonder if some of the stuff that we saw the New York Jets execute against the Houston Texans some of the dump off it's the quick decisions the nice easy throws over the middle I wonder if perhaps the Texans trust Case Keenum to make those decisions quickly and efficiently get the ball out in a hurry if you don't have a guys to get deep like say if Nico Collins can't play because he's been hurt all week if you don't have guys to get the ball deep too then you don't need the arm talent that Davis Mills possesses if you're going to run a bunch of short stuff if you're going to take care of the football if you're going to run the football better make sure you're in the right play sure I understand that case keeno might be the guy that the Texans trust a little bit more in this situation really it's come down to trust in this and that they trust Case Keenum more than they trust Davis Mills the big question for me is and the report from KPRC was keenum's played in some big games before so they trust him they've been playing big games for the past three four weeks they've been in the playoff hunt the playoff convers ation so why wasn't Case Keenum the backup for those games especially if CJ strout's playing more football in a season than he ever has and the offensive lines had some issues protecting CJ strout so what exactly led to the flip well perhaps Davis Mills went out there and practiced this week and in three practices he didn't practice very well uh you know KPRC reporting that Mills and Keenum split first team reps so there was at least an idea a plan to go with Case Keenum or perhaps there's a flat out just whoever plays better starting and they've gone with Case Keenum but I don't know that I totally agree with it just because I'm not sure keenum's arm is going to hold up in this one and from a Mobility standpoint it seems about equal I suppose you could say Keenum is probably more Adept and better at setting up the offensive line protection getting those guys ready to protect him Mills is not immobile he's not a statue H he's probably got a little bit more scoot to his game than Case Keenum at this point and that's important with the offensive line struggling as mightily as they have over the past few weeks and oh by the way this Tennessee Titans team is fifth in the National Football League in sacks from that standpoint so the Texans going with Case Keenum over Davis Mills I don't totally get it I don't totally understand it that's not what I would do but that's what the Texans seem ready to do against the Tennessee Titans of course that is if CJ strout can't play hold out hope until there is no chance he is playing that's what I say as far as the Stroud situation goes and then from that standpoint Texans told us all year it was going to be Davis Mills they make the change here at the last moment this a big one for demo Ryans and his status as a big-time coach because that defense that got torn to shreds by Zack Wilson has got to play much much better this week the offense the ceiling is way lower way lower than it's been at any point this season so let's see if Deo Ryan can coach and gut out a win for this Texans team and get them to stick around in this playoff hunt in the crowded AFC picture you've been seeing the
