Patriots Claim WR Matt Landers from Cleveland Browns

the New England Patriots are still making roster moves here as they head into week three and the final week of the preseason with roster cutdowns just right around the corner and here the Patriots adding and claiming off of waivers Matt Landers just adding to the wide receiver position and does this move make the New England Patriots more stacked at the wide receiver position guys we are going judon that got them to 90 players and then today they got to 91 players by claiming Matt Landers off of waivers from the Cleveland Browns now you might be asking yourself well what transaction did they make in order to actually put this claim through Unfortunately they are placing wide receiver to Quay Jackson on injured reserve his season is going to be over obviously had a couple of bright spots throughout training camp also looked really good in that week one game against the Carolina Panthers where he played late into the fourth quarter had a touchdown grab from Joe Milton but then unfortunately second preseason game against the Eagles goes down with an injury but the first thing I'd like here is that the Patriots are already utilizing their spot in the waiver claim Patriots general manager Elliot wolf he said this earlier this week himself that the Patriots they're going to be aggressive still with this roster not just over the next few weeks until roster cutdowns but even into the regular season they are currently third in the waiver claim priority that's because obviously they were the third worst team in the National Football League last year it's going to go the Carolina Panthers and then it's going to go the commanders and then it's going to go the New England Patriots meaning that players who are in the first I believe it's four years if I'm correct the first four years in the NFL when they're released they don't just immediately become free agents they're not key or core veterans in the NFL yet they actually have to go through waivers and that goes down a certain list Patriots are third on that list so as long as the Panthers as long as the commanders pass up on those guys the Patriots will have dibs at really anyone I think that'll most notably come in during roster cutdowns when over a thousand players League wide end up getting cut there's bound to be some really good high potential players that end up being released but Landers here man he offers something that the Patriots just don't have and I think that's what's a really interesting move here by the Patriots now again formerly playing for the Cleveland Browns that's the team he was just released by there's obviously parallels between the New England Patriots and the Cleveland Browns with the type of offense they're running here now with Alex vanel Landers still only 25 years old still in his prime has a lot of time to still develop originally entered the NFL as a rookie free agent with the Seattle Seahawks out of Arkansas just back in 20 2023 he's 6'4 200 PBS he immediately comes in and is the tallest wide receiver active on this Patriots roster I believe the second tallest wide receiver is tawon Thorton at 6 foot2 other than that the Patriots really just have a lot of receivers sitting at that 6 foot 6'1 Mark 200 lbs for a guy who's 6'4 definitely a little bit undersized but again this isn't a perfect Prospect this was a udfa a year ago now during his rookie season did spend time with like I mentioned the Seattle Seahawks but not just that he also spent time with the Carolina Panthers after that wasn't really getting any calls by any NFL team so he actually spent some time in the UFL in 2024 before being signed by the Cleveland Browns back in may he ended up being with two teams in the UFL actually now after being signed by the Cleveland Browns back in may he was released by them just a few days ago on August 19th he began his collegia of career in Georgia spent 2017 to 2020 with them so obviously a very highly thought upon colletive School ended up transferring though to Toledo in 2021 and then went to Arkansas for the 2022 season speaking of 2022 he was able to record 47 receptions for 901 yards and eight touchdowns that year not just that but Landers offers the Patriots something at the wide receiver position that they don't have literally at all and that is size and that is speed yes there's a lot more that comes to the game than just size and speed he has to be able to catch the ball he has to run routes effectively he actually has to get separation against these Defenders but being 6'4 and being able to run a 43 is something question and that is can Landers actually make the Patriots 53 man roster is this a signing with any substance or is this just a preseason signing unfortunately when a team makes moves this close to roster cutdowns and right before their final preseason game to me what this screams is hey we just need bodies to play in our final preseason game this is giving these players an opportunity to maybe bre on a 53 man roster somewhere else or or maybe even just sticking on a practice squad somewhere in the NFL in fighting for a roster spot next year now most teams including the Patriots rarely play any starters for the majority of the snaps in the final preseason game if any snaps at all and you just need guys like I said to get you through the game the best way that I can compare this to was a year or two ago when the Patriots signed CJ marble like the same week of their final preseason game he plays the majority of that game for them but then gets cut during roster cutdowns I do like Landers I do like the potential there like I mentioned 6 foot4 ran a 43 there is potential there if it can be tapped into but I think at best he's going to be somebody that is fighting for a practice squad spot here and not a 53 man roster spot here unfortunately for him too this wide receiver core is stacked with NFL caliber wide receivers I'm not saying this Patriots roster is one of the best in the NFL at the wide receiver position but it's going to be hard for some guys that have been on this roster to actually make the 53 Kendrick Bourne a lock he'll probably start the season on the injured reserve but he's still a lock to play this season Demario Douglas lock Jaylen pulk lock Kendrick Bourne or not Kendrick Bourne but KJ Osborne rather lock tawon Thorton lock Jayvon Baker lock that is going to bring up the glaring question which receiver is going to make this final spot with their seventh wide receiver is it GNA be kaan booty is it going to be Jaylen ragger even David Wallace has showed the potential as a return man at times I just don't see how Matt Landers comes in even if he puts up 200 yards and two touchdowns in this game I just don't see how it's going to Merit a roster spot over these veterans who have been in the system now for multiple years like a Cas Shan booty and like a Jaylen regger at the end of the day though I do still really like this signing and I hope that he shows us enough to be able to say this is a guy that at the end of 2024 going into 2025 he can be someone that we can look forward to watching in training camp and then
