champions of North Dakota High School football tonight their season opens up with a challenge at hand that may be one of the biggest of the year it's a rematch of last year's semifinals as the West Fargo chead Mustang G are in town it's a number one vers number two matchup in Triple A football here on the PSP Network good evening football fans welcome into Dwayne Carlson Stadium for the opening night in week number two for the Mad Giants West Fargo that's already got a game underneath their belt after they handed a win uh handed a loss to Williston just a week ago 39-2 this is a matchup gotone a lot better Nick obviously losing at home blowing a halftime lead like they did giving up 20 points in the fourth quarter and state semi-final it was a magical game Min not high ended up riding that momentum into the State title and claiming the trophy in the end this matchup has been on Cheyenne's mind all off seon who better to start your season well we listen last week but you know Min not has been on the top of their mind since that loss in the semi around yeah forgive me for saying could have it went better for either team obviously it could have however at points in that ball game Cheyenne really dominated the B High magicians with a two touchdown lead at one point and even more than that to the Ball Game it slipped away at the hands of B High and the powerful postseason run they had that had so many players that were worth so many highlight reels and bags of popcorn to sit down and watch each and every night the maner are going to miss some of those players including Logan Concklin and Tyson Ren good here this year they will sure miss those contributors in the playoffs remember this is a Min not Team all three games in the playoff they were trailing at the half they just found ways to win and it was because of those guys who may not have been credited as the most talented football players in the state it's because they wanted to get the job done for the Magi and that's how they got it you look at Cheyenne they're going to miss some guys as well however they're going to bring some horses back part of the pun being the Mustangs of course but we look at cheyen the number two ranked team in North Dakota right now mod an high ranked number one we'll get into the head-to-head matchup here in just a moment but what is it that you like so much about cheyen I know you've got them pegged tonight as being the team that probably is the favorite walking out of here when it's all said and done when you're making preseason predictions it's all about who's coming back and of course how you did last season this is a team that played great offensively shown Great Signs defensively and they return the most Talent of any team in 3A football you talk about the quarterback position you talk about left tackle you talk about DN the three most important positions on the football field they have some of the best there is to offer in the entire state Nebraska he's on the line on both sides they also have a quarterback at Kaden Olsa that's going to be a contributing factor here tonight by the Numbers though Owen when you take a look at how these Mad J are sitting at number one cheyen at number two bismar at three Davies at four mandad up into the top five after they beat shadley last week shadley still receiving some votes any big surprises in your mind as we look at the Ser pro top five in North Dakota High School football for 3A if you want me to be honest with you the biggest surprise in my mind is min not high being number one I think is the biggest one here when we make preseason predictions we talked about this in the first segment you look at who's coming back you look at the talent you have on your roster that you expect to be from a year ago and Minah High just doesn't have that they're going to have to find new people in new positions to take back that number one spot obviously that's just giving them they deserve after winning a state championship Cheyenne is right there at number two that's got to be a close gap between one and two that will really settle today here in Minot but bismar Kai demons that is a scary looking team just ran for over 300 yards on the road at Fargo North last week they're they're a team to really watch out for in the west this season obviously Fargo Davies can run the ball well and Mandan has the most electric player in all of North dakot High School football at Hudson Sheldon running around out there like it's fifth grade recess yeah fifth grade recess backyard football you name it mad's going to be a top out for anybody this year we will find out where the Magi and the Mustangs really fall into line after this showdown here at Dwayne Carlson Stadium standings inside of North Dakota 3A football on the East End on the west side of the state how do they shape up well we've only had one round of games so far and one week of games here as we enter week number two taking a look at where the standings fall into line right now Min man and Legacy Sentry Willison bismar are the six teams that are in Triple A in the wda here this year nobody playing in the conference just yet however mandad and Legacy have wins so does bismar high Sentry and Williston are the teams that have not foued wins yet through the early portion of the Season might it the only team that has not played a game yet in 3A football in North Dakota Davies Cheyenne Fargo North Shanley and West Fargo are the five from the East how this will work this year for the playf picture thank goodness the qrf has been tossed out the window Owen No More qrf ratings to see where the teams will end up falling in line for the playoff picture however the top four from the East the top four from the West will collide in the postseason like it love it hand it your thoughts overall the new shaping of North Dakota 3A football well you don't have to score 67 points every game and get credited on that to be the number one seed now you just got to go out and win the games it's as simple as that if you can pull off a win you're you're going to get credit for it in the seating in the postseason it's not how many points you score it's not how long you leave the starters in in the fourth quarter in the final game of the season it's just how many wins and how many losses you have this is back to bread and butter this is how it needs to be and we've got the eight best teams in the postseason by season's end yeah it's going to be interesting what it all shakes up you see right now don't take any note uh to where they're standing in the East or the West right now this is just strictly off of the EDC website and the wda webs S I would have to think that bismar by the end of the year will probably be a team that is higher up than the number six spot in the wda oh yeah and bismar the way they played against Fargo North a team that is coming up from double A they're a scary match up for anybody who talk about those beasts on the offensive line that they possess probably one of the best groups in the wda up front they can bully some teams around yeah the demons definitely a preseason pick of mind further into this contest here tonight we talk about Kade petock at the senior tackle that's 6'5 250 lbs off to play at Nebraska when we talked in our pregame notes here today Owen you touched on this kid being so special at a four-star recruit for the past few years yeah Kade patock is the name to know in 3A football this season it's just cuz he can disrupt you on both sides of the ball he plays left tackle he plays defensive end if you watch that Willison game the coyotes had nothing they could do to stop Kade petock and now he comes to Min not he's out there to prove himself but it's not only individual effort for him it's a in what Cheyenne could not do last season and he's really the key to make Cheyenne go as they hope for a State title this season yeah they certainly are going to ride around the big man up front however for me and prepping for the game here tonight and taking a look at one of the players that really hops off the paper to me one of those skilled guys and the player to watch here this evening one of those guys that gets a little bit more love from time to time it's their quarterback Kate Olsen the senior at 6'2 already has gone for 81 yards on the year 67% completion rating he's got two TDS he threw for one interception this is an all state kid and I'm telling you right now that with what he was able to do a year ago look at these numbers Z I mean they're fascinating 2449 yards total offense for him with a 64% completion rating he had 25 touchdowns he did get picked off 11 times however he had some targets last year will they have targets for him to go to here in 2024 they sure do and it's a big tight end by the name of Cooper Bryant a 6-3 senior and it's at wide receiver Kade gilseth and Caleb hos they are missing their top Target from last year in fact they're missing their top three wide receivers from a year ago but those 25 touchdowns that's only through the air this is a dual threat guy in Kaden Olen ran in 12 more 37 total scores in 2023 a dual threat quarterback for the Cheyenne Mustangs for the other side for the Magi Griffin broadrick kayen craft I by High's got some guys Kellen Burke certainly but that offensive and defensive line really is going to make her break the Magi in my mind here in the early portion of the Season yeah broadrick he can run crafts can catch passes Burke can throw it up but if Burke doesn't have the time and brri doesn't have the lanes to run it's going to be a nightmare day for m not high and that starts with the offensive line and speaking with their coaching staff earlier today they take a lot of pride in that offensive line they feel like that is the position group that might be their strongest this season which is good when you're taking on guys like Kade petock in blocked field goal to end the first half and all that while in the second quarter Cheyenne's offense started to take off started to look like how it should for Cheyenne moving the ball with uh Olen at quarterback ran in one score and took the top off the defense a couple of times with long pass playes we do have more firework how do you like that I I I love it I was hoping well Min not has not scored a touchdown yet I've been wondering if we got fireworks for the touchdowns well they might be using them up right now the way that the Shad defense has played quite a show here at Dwayne Carlson Stadium here in the Magic City well when you win a State title sometimes you come out with a bang to start your next campaign and that's certainly what we've got here tonight is the fireworks are on full display as the Magi come back to the field Mustangs are out and ready for the second half warm-up coming up let's take a look at the highlights of this ball game and Owen we we're going to see a variety of things here in this contest starting with a Kellenberg field goal this kid really is a well-rounded athlete going off to play college baseball however his what might be the most valuable piece on that young man's athletic body they might be giving him a call for the soccer team coming up next week Kellen Burke definitely should be going there I think he actually did play soccer a couple years ago not on the team this season cuz he's got quarterback duties to take care of now on the football field but yeah from 40 yards out that's something you don't see too often here in North Dakota yeah certainly not you see M High get back into the sh Pro Red Zone and this is where that Cheyenne defense has come up big in this ball game that was late in our second half you're going to see a big play coming here from the Mustangs it's going to result in six points coming down the road here Kon Olsson really settled in there late in the second half didn't he yeah he did and again it's the short pass plays it's the stops it's the screens it's setting up the run the read option right here on the touchdown perfect read from olon gets a block two blocks at the goal line Paving his way for that first Cheyenne score and after you do all of that small work on offense you're able to throw it over the middle past the safeties to add on points but m not had their fair share of offensive highlights they were able to move the ball down field but once it got to the Red Zone things got congested there wasn't space there to run their long developing routes Cheyenne made all the plays well chead had the bigger plays in the ball game without question you see a long hail Mar pass that ended up to Sullivan iy this results at six more and Shad at this point in the ball game I don't know if you would say that they're comfortable on and with where they are right now however sitting on the 143 lead and maybe the biggest momentum Turner so far in the ball game was the defensive stop right at the end of the first half as the Magi took it deep down into the Red Zone but again it was the Mustangs that had the answer for the mined High offense on a blocked field goal attempt for Kell Burke at the end of our first half yeah Cheyenne is a lot more comfortable up 143 at the half than they were down three nothing when their offense was a little bit unorganized they weren't really working the way that Cheyenne's offense is expected to do throughout the season and what they showed last year so to have this 11-point lead to have the momentum going into the second half they can really start to run with this one in the second half in your mind is there something that M High needs to change if they want to come away with a week one Victory they just got to remember that Cheyenne can throw the Deep ball that was the one thing that hurt them big time in the second quarter and you have to score points in the red zone just one field goal in three Red Zone trips is not going to cut it taking a look real quick while we've got a quick moment the week ahead of the PSP Network well we open up with a bang with number two against number one in 3A football impressive after Cheyenne lost some key players in penu last year they also had uh Wilson back there Caleb deer a big one for the Mustangs a season ago seems like those key play ERS here for the Mustangs and some of those big time position roles and those highlight reel players have really been fulfilled well here in this 24 campaign yeah the Mustangs lost their top two rushers Barry penu on that list top three R wide receivers like you mentioned deer on the offens side of the ball but you keep your quarterback that's where the experience lies for this Mustangs team and you just usher in threw the ball pretty well he definitely settled into that area of his game and of course field goal kicking also one of his Specialties well the only bad part about him kicking from there is that the Ser Pro Red Zone had a visit from the bad highlight just a moment ago where the cheyen defense came up big and slammed the door on mod in high school and the offense for the Mustangs came out and we saw that Kaden Olson certainly can get it done in more ways than one with the arm and on the ground he's in for his first six here yep we knew that coming in olon is going to be dynamic in the back field for West Fargo Cheyenne really didn't see him at all in the Run game except for that touchdown but High had some big plays secondary was good for Shad here today no question about that we're going to get into some more scoring plays coming up here this is at the tail end of the first half shy ends up 7 to3 big play to Sullivan iy there and then more points go on the board as Tate Herman scampers in from just about four out Sully iy really quietly played one of the best games for Cheyenne today his effort on the receiving end his effort defensively suly iry really credited with part of this comeback as well for cheyen M and high marched down at the end of the first half of football with the chance to maybe put a dagger into that first half and really gain some momentum heading into the second half you see a giant play here that lands might High down to the 12 yd line but guess what another Red Zone stop here for the Mustangs to end the first half of football and they probably would have been happy if that field goal went in you hold him to three in the Red Zone but to block it you go into halftime with even more momentum just what Cheyenne needed second half action M High well let's hop right to the final play of the game here and we do apologize that was Kellen Burke that made his way down Burke had a chance right down to the 2yd Line This is the play before for the Magi bradrick and the Magi faithful looked on as Kellen Burke got into the end zone but there was a flag on the play that really uh was quite a danger tonight for the Magi yep not everybody set try it again you go with Burke and he tries to do everything that he can to score that touchdown put put out an extra effort there knowing that he was going to get tackled inbounds that was going to be the final play of the game and coughed up the football recovered by the Cheyenne Mustangs I don't know what happened here we're working backwards in our highlights from the end of the game back to the middle of the contest here but this is min's last Drive of the contest that made it real interesting you really have to credit mind high with what they did in this contest to even plays 36 and 48 yds outl at High made it interesting and then the red zone defense came up and reared its monster head at the end of the ball game for Cheyenne a lot of credit has to be given there oh
