Why did Jim McCain switch political parties?

the name McCain in Arizona it's about as big a name as you can get carries a lot of weight it sure does and um Des deservedly so and it also carries weight with a lot of Republicans but there's one man who has the last name of McCain who decided I don't want to be a republican I don't even want to be an independent I want to be a Democrat now pretty interesting joining us now is the son of uh the late Senator John McCain Jim McCain joins us on KTR Jim how are you today hey how are you how you guys doing we're doing great man we're doing great thank you for joining us it's a pretty big story you becoming a a a Democrat I'm sure there are a lot of different reasons and we're going to go through all that right now yeah first off should I should I refer to you by rank uh is that is that the proper way to do it no no no no I uh no I'm just here as a private citizen 104 sir all right um uh so I just landed I took off from Reagan Airport this morning uh I was from DC originally and spent the weekend there and as you know while driving to Reagan National Airport I drive past Arlington National Cemetery and this morning driving past it on my way to the airport it made me angry and it made me angry thinking about what happened there last week I'm curious as to your thoughts well I mean that was one of the sing moments for today and and all this was you know Arlington National Cemetery is is you know the most sacred place for Veterans for people have serve for the family members of those those who served and uh you know there's rules there's rules that the US Army the dod has put in place for how to act there and one of them is you know it shouldn't be used for any form of political purposes and uh that's uh that's something that I you know it's an extremely special place to myself you know three generations of maranes are there it would be four but dad's in Annapolis so it's a pretty sacred place to our family I mean every everyone in our family and every veteran so yeah obviously we're talking about how Trump was at Arlington National Cemetery the incident that took place last week there was a photo op uh some of the families um of of the deceased of those buried there um got a picture with um with Donald Trump and he had a big thumbs up and a they filmed a video there for his campaign Etc so so Jim what if the family said Hey listen we want the former president there and we want the picture taken in front of our loved ones grave if they were okay with it uh is why is that still wrong if they're okay with it well it's not wrong for the family to take a picture with the former president in front of you know their loved ones grave that's their choice it's what's wrong is that any form of it being politicized or being used towards a campaign that's the part that that is wrong you know those men and women were buried there they don't have have a political opinion you know they're they're there and and we are there to honor them when we go there and that's kind of the key of this entire thing you know that those people don't get to say whether or not they want to be in it we're talking right now to Jim McCain the son of the late Senator John McCain somebody that we both called a friend around here and uh uh you know we we appreciate you spending time with us today Jim you you're making the rounds because you switched from the Republican Party to the Democrat Party I'm curious if you think uh your dad would be welcomed in today's Republican party I laughed when I even said it because I think I know the answer if your dad was sitting here I think I know the answer well I mean he was a he was a force in and of himself you know he was he he'd been in the Republican party for a long time but he was key was moderation you know bipartisanship working together because in the end the country comes first you know whatever we do to better this country that's the key and whether or not he'd be accepted you know if he ran today I don't know but I do know that he was in it and he was amazing you know what I mean so we all miss him here here so you switch from uh you know one party to the Democratic party and this was a couple weeks ago what what put you over the edge what what what sent you from well I'm a republican my dad was a great Republican uh Megan McCain uh she's certainly still a republican not Maga um what what put you over the edge two weeks ago to say you know what I'm done and I'm moving to the Democratic side well you know I see you know what I care about the most is is the country right and I care about moving forward and continuing us to be the greatest you know country in the world and and that's I see the future of that in the Democratic party you know I see that bipartisanship that ability to work together but things like that and you know that's that's the way I look at all this and and the reason two weeks ago that I switched is because uh I got home two weeks ago so okay fair enough it's mostly I know I mean I I'll just say it it's mostly Trump right I mean you know you you your father and and Donald Trump never got along um I I mean I remember it very well they both kind of hit each other of course it was Trump who said well I don't like you know soldiers who got got caught and um which you know I I think a lot of us were like wow why how could he say that but it's is it mostly Trump you're not a republican because of trump is that is that am I am I off I mean it's it yes and no I mean the main the main point you know more than you know what Donald Trump said about my father is you know almost laughable at some point the man lived his entire life serving his and car his country you know that that you know I you know no one can you know I don't ever question John McCain's service but the one of the main points is that I do see a future in you know working together country first and ensuring that that we continue to work together and not divide us and I I hope I think that answers your question in a roundabout way we're talking again to Jim McCain the son of the late Senator John McCain I'm listening to you speak Jim can I call you we're friends now I'm call you Jim uh do you have any thoughts of running for public office I uh at this point no I'm just trying to do what's right at this portion in in in you know my life and my career and and everything like that what I feel that is right is is what I'm doing and coming out and speaking publicly about all this couldn't you have stayed in the Republican party and just said you know what I don't like the Maga movement I don't like Donald Trump and what he stands for instead you move to the Democratic side and you're actually endorsing KLA Harris could you have could you have done the F fought from inside the party yeah well I mean no I mean I'm I'm standing up for what I believe in you know and that's that's the the Democratic party you know what I mean I mean that's the that's the real point there I was independent for years years and years and years but right and uh the switch is just you know seeing the future of this seeing the future of this country but if the party was like your Dad's party you would never have left I mean I don't know if I never would have left you know what I mean it's a it's a personal choice and we all grow over time you know it's one of the best parts is that people can be at one point in their life at one thing and another point in the other it's we all grow you know what I mean and you know how however I grew you know what I mean into John McCain switching parties it's his belie I mean only mcain only McCain to do it oh yeah I mean it carries weight when that last name does something Cindy endorsed Biden in 2020 Megan it was funny I was texting with Megan today and it wasn't even about this right um I was just I I owed her a text back and uh and she did mention you know Jim becom goes you know my brother yeah and that was before we booked this this interview yeah um but but Megan is very much still a republican very much conservative she's fighting from the inside doesn't like Donald Trump and doesn't like KLA Harris and the far left interesting yeah hey but it's like any other family though right I mean a lot of families you're going to go over the holidays last name okay I don't know you're a McCain and a
