[Music] Monza was McLaren's to lose on paper but they were stunned by a Ferrari masterclass these are magical moments at Monza this did not seem possible when Char Clair started fourth on the grid but it will be a season of Home victories for Shir the man from Monaco is the man for Monza the toosi are roaring him home and for the second time in his career shla Clair is the winner of the atalian Grand Prix for Ferrari hello and welcome everybody to the Monza Paddock for F1 nation's review of a spectacular Italian Grand Prix I'm Tom Clarkson and joining me is the 2023 Formula 2 champion and Saba Reserve driver Teo poer and the 2012 gp2 Champion David veki guys what a stunning Italian Grand Prix let's get some reaction first of all Tor yeah that was a great race to watch for sure uh seeing the McLarens and the and the Ferraris battling uh L cler winning uh for Ferrari at Monza is amazing that was my first time in in Monza seeing a Ferrari win so that's for sure uh give me uh cheers you know like goosebumps you know it's it was amazing to to see you and everybody else I mean David day how much of a surprise was L clar's victory yeah I think that Ferrari had a magical strategy but without the talent of L cler you could not win this type of race so that drive Alpha race to the end was just perfect how he could manage the tires I how he could Devo the front left degradation that everyone else in the field was suffered with was something unbelievable so yeah the the atmosphere the the the the the the crowd everything was perfect but without the talent of that driver maybe the chance was not there so the victory come after a perfect strategy after a fantastic car with the right driver on it CH the today was Master CR from my point of view well let hear from that man who gave us the master class the king of Monza here's what that Victory meant to shla Clair ah just as sweet as the 2019 one I thought the first one uh was always going to be more special if there was a second one ever happening but actually it's not the case the second one just feels as special and today I I did not expect uh it going to to the race I I thought that will struggle a bit more compared to uh the McLaren but also to compared to the Mercedes that seemed to have a really good Pace on Friday however after a few laps I I saw and I felt the car was uh in a good place Oscar maybe was a little bit quicker uh it was difficult to see Lando's Pace as he was behind then once we get under C I was like okay maybe we are losing the win there but then once both pitted uh I actually picked up quite a lot of front grip having the the the free a in front and I was being the last car I I didn't have um much to lose by by trying the One Stop uh but we did a a really really good job with that front left which has been very very tricky for everybody we had a lot of front graining but managed to take that front grip again and uh that helped us to to win today and uh to stand up on that podium in front of all the Tios um after such a week because it's a very tiring one it's it's an incredible feeling to be racing for Ferrari in Monza but it's also very tiring and uh to be able to win here was uh yeah is extremely special it was a strategic Master stroke I just want to ask you how confident were you of this one stop and had you been leading would you have still one stopped um before the race if you all have had asked me the One Stop was definitely the thing I wanted to do after 10 laps I think we saw that Red Bull started to struggle with the front left on the on the hard and and there we started to doubt the One Stop we thought that it would be a lot more difficult because we thought that the hard will be a more difficult TI to bring to the end however as soon as I put it I I still thought that this was a possibility and especially I think when Oscar pitted two or three laps after that I felt like I had more grip not having a car in front especially on the front tires and that's where I really thought that the onetop we could make it work now you said after the race to niik rosberg uh that you've clearly made progress with these upgrades you've already won at Monaco you've now won here at Monza just how much more can you achieve with this car in 2024 uh we've got to be cautious um after Monaco I I think we've had the four worst races of the season because Monaco was so specific to to our car at that time Monza is also a very specific and particular track lots of straights not many corners we had a rear wing um for for this track as well which uh helped us to win today we had also another upgrade which I think definitely brought us closer to to McLaren but I don't think it's enough to to be the car to beat for the rest of the season on other tracks I think we still have a lot of work to do but uh I'm I'm really happy anyway to have one here in Italy right guys with your racing driver heads on what can you do in the copit to look after that front left around Monza I think it's really tough you know to uh do so many laps on the same set of tires you really have to avoid uh avoid to you know uh destroy this front left tire especially in the last Corner uh you see it's a very very long right hand corner so all those long right hand Corners the both Les MOS those this last corner you really have to be smooth on the steering wheel uh and also avoid any types of front lockings uh front lockings are destroying the tires uh it can be real lockings as well for the for the real tires which is difficult uh to manage as well in Monza with all the the slow speed uh uh exits and the front left tire so uh yeah I mean I think he he did a master class uh Today l cleric and the Ferrari strategy was was really good as well but uh yeah I mean that was that was perfect from him DAV day 38 Laps on those hard tires I want to know as he went into that stin was he mindful of the one stop or was it only halfway through probably he has it in mind but the laps were too many and so probably the team and and the driver thought at that at that moment we are going to need the second piss stop but I I heard from his voice saying before that when he saw pastri stopped in front of him he started immediately thinking I'm going to finish the race with only one piss stop and it's going to be my chance and that uh and that thought was was the key because then with his talent he could manage the situation to be so consistent and so strong on the lifetime that destroy all the confidence of pastri pastri stopped fresh tirus get into the truck one second second and a half quicker 1.6 quicker 1.5 quicker and then 1.5 1.5 in the last six or seven lap 1 second 8 T just seven and L clar could remain constant on his lap time it was the key to destroy the the feeling The Confident the selfconfidence of pastri and at the end L cler made it was was just special and everyone all the other they were suffering about front left degradation we heard the no during the race say man I cannot uh manage it the front left we uh I spoke with albon and kapino they had the same problem so more or less everyone was fighting with that tyus L was just perfect with that and also we need to underline Tom four laps more than signs signs fourth L clar won the race and the second stint the one of L clar was even quicker than Carlos SS won so we need to underline that L today was special of lle seven wins in Formula 1 was this his best I mean we've seen some special ones Monaco this year but was this was this the best yeah but about Monaco this year I'm not agree with you I mean he won the race with a special qualify then the racing himself running out of the pace at 35% of the race was not sportal on the driving side yeah this one probably the best one the most difficult one then we need to remember that im monah here he had one just in front of Le Hamilton putting pressure on him I think 2019 yeah that was something something incredible but this year was I don't know after quali it was so it's it was so disappointing he thought that probably there was no way to win this race and for this reason that maybe this one is the sweetest one because he thought probably on Saturday no way but today they made it and and what a turnaround by Ferrari right wind the clock back 12 months to last year and tyw Ty de was a massive issue for them as was strategy and yet suddenly here we are this year they've got the best de of any team and and they ran the best strategy today yeah for sure and uh everything happens in Monza for them so that's that's perfect you know they won Monaco with with Charles they won Monza Australia as well with Carlos but uh yeah I think this race proves that uh the car was I think with the McLaren the quickest car today on track um and Charles did did a very very special job to win the race but uh they they were in the fight with with McLaren in terms of pace and uh and that's um that's uh really good for them think Ferrari are back in in in the fight and Tom T it's interesting to to to realize how is different from the beginning of the season because at the beginning of the Season we were together when you were say Red Bull is the fastest with the Sten is always right with the piss stop and the strategy is perfect now 3 months later probably not the best go they missed the piss stop and Ferrari did all perfectly with both of the car they were 2.2 at 2.4 second the pist me they were one of the best while all the others they were having difficulty it's strange how we realize now that in three month seems that the championship is upside down Champion seems upside down but also another crucial Factor today is that I felt Shir was massively up for this weekend all right everything about him all weekend he he came here on the back of two podiums but I I think he knew from the outset that this was a race he could win with these upgrades that they've had on the car um and I thought that was that was proven as well on the opening lap when he overtook Lando Norris for sure I think that's a very very important point to to say you you know um the star was was really good I think for sure the move uh that pastre did on Norris uh was amazing and and then you know Char was at the perfect uh perfect position right time right moment for him to overtake one of the McLarens and that uh creat a lot of opportunities for Ferrari and they they could try something with the strategy with this track positions what about the championship then so lerus had three podiums in a row including this victory at home he's 86 points behind Max V stappen 24 points behind Lando Norris eight races left plus three F1 Sprints can we exclude him from the championship I think the season of Ferrari has been so up and down then up and down with performance that is not easy to say they're going to fight I'm honest and then there are some time of circuits where they perform better sometimes of C when they're struggling so it's not so easy to say is their momentum at the moment it seems more clear that uh Mclaren has more momentum I mean the the speed is more or less everywhere top and seems easier to predict that they are going to fight for everything but L Clair how is driving in the last three weekends I think was probably if it's not the best close to be the best in general and then Ferrari is not also far away in the Constructor Championship and both driver we know that in Ferrari they are very reliable with not many mistakes and always there very similar in pace so I don't know uh you can dream about everything but probably is very difficult to achieve and I'm going to wait two or three more races to reply to your answer probably we have a more clear condition Ferrari are only 39 points behind Red Bull in the Constructor Championship okay do we think Ferrari can beat Red Bull could we see Red Bull finish third I'm almost convinced third in the constr almost convinced that he going to be McLaren Ferrari and then Red Bull well and charl said after the race that he expects the car to be very good in Singapore of course the race that they won last year with Carlos Saints can be also very good in Baku where is phenomenal so I don't know but there is two or three of the next few races where I'm sure that the kid plus the car can can achieve everything and I mean the victory this is an advertisement from better help when was the last time you learned something purely for fun I know that if I had the time there's a whole bunch of Oscar piastri in P2 the graining of the tires has been a big topical weekend you know in practice once you got graining it was basically game over um even in the first on the mediums it was pretty difficult yeah when we we made the second stop for myself my front left tie was was pretty heavily grained and uh you know I was going slower and slower so it seemed like a sensible decision to to pit again you know I guess nobody really expected the gring to clear up on Charles from what I heard so yeah in hindsight clearly stopping once was was the right thing to do but uh from that point in the race with all the information that we'd gathered through the weekend it seemed incredibly risky and you know that's kind of the the blessing and the curse of leading the race or or you know being at the front full stop the guys behind you can react to what you do and you know for Charles uh if he did a two stop he would have locked in third and if he did a one stop and fell off the cliff he still would have finished third but of course he pulled the one step off and the Ferrari looked like the hero today so yeah obviously it it hurts at the moment but uh I think in the moment it was um was the right thing to do Oscar thank you for that Lando if we can come to you now uh very well done to you as well how do you look back on today's Italian Grand Prix pretty disappointing which is which is obvious from the outside even so um I mean Charles drove a great race honestly uh hard to know if we could have done what he did today but um they deserved it and uh both Oscar and Charles drove a good race so um yeah disappointing starting from Paul and any third especially when I think um the pace was very strong so a shame but that's what it is now one of the things that's come out of this Grand Prix is that you're allowed to race Oscar papaya rules those are the words of your race engineer will Joseph what are those Rules of Engagement uh just don't crash that's all and was Oscar's pass on you into the second chicane on lap one was that all within the rules yeah there was no contact so he did a good job okay look final one from me uh you've eaten into max ven's lead you're now just 62 points behind eight races to go how do you view that um the same as I it's the same answer every single weekend I'm doing the best I can and the more points I gain the better but still eight races to go you're doing the best you can are you going to need some help I have I have help and um from your teammate yeah he helps me but uh I'm not here just to uh beg for someone to let me pass you know that's not what I'm here so I'm here to race youd you have a better race than me so I finished third and that's where I deserve to finish guys let's imagine we are in the McLaren debrief which is probably taking place right now a little bit further down the paddock first up what is the mood we think that was uh One That Got Away a race that they lost did they lose it or did Ferrari win it I think Ferrari won but uh they made the mistake in McLaren to give the chance to Ferrari to go for it and to hope for it and they gave the chance to L cler to lead that race to decide with an alternative strategy without any question I mean I think they they made some mistake during the race they made a mistake of pastri attack Norris for the leadership at the second Corner in theory if we have to remake the start of the race I will suggest to the driver of my team to try to conserve the position first two in the first chicane being Square who by side at the first approach to cover the line both line and they did it exit very well from the first CH and then maintain the position for the first few laps at least that is my easy statement okay would you agree you racing drivers if you were Oscar piastri the reason I ask you that is that we still have eight races to go I understand why McLaren want to keep Oscar piastri motivated right and I think if you at this stage of the season start telling him to just tuck in behind Lando that's difficult for him I'm honest I'm honest I'm loving the idea of McLaren to let the driver fight we call that papaya rules from today onwards right as as suggested by Will Joseph the the driver fight for everything but they find and like um pastri said on Monday everyone is an hero so at the moment vasek is an hero because we are not driver we are just watching them and so it's incredibly easy say whatever you want but I find it slightly arrogant I'm sorry if I permit myself to say that one at that time in the race there was pastri leading the race noris second 2 second behind or 1 second. five behind pastri and then there was 3 second behind there was L Clair saying at that time that is papaya rules London Norris you can fight Oscar pastri so at that moment they don't realize or they underestimate the strength of Ferrari and the capability and the talent of L Clair they they thought at that moment ah we are going to fight for the victory no one else is maintaining our Rhythm and we are going to beat everyone else like happen in zandor come on you have to beat the the rivals before and then you can try to do one thing I mean also to put in the mind of the driver to force so much on the tires because you can fight for the victory oneir of the race on incredibly too early I cannot understand it if we we watch the race together it's too early to say something like this papaya rules there's no it's not necessary David the last five laps I just think that proves that they'd underestimated Ferrari's ability to do a one stop I think at that point they were thinking everyone was to stopping and they were proven wrong right okay so next question Teo what did what did you make of Oscar's overtake of Lando at the second chicane on the opening lap I think that was uh first of all very risky because it's on your teammate lap one uh it's it's it's a lot of risks but um I think that was that was a beautiful overtake they gave each other room um that was I mean they were respectful but yeah really clean really beautiful overtake but very risky on your teammate lap one uh your P1 P2 it's yeah I mean as I say risky but beautiful probably the best move of the Season that one of roscar pastri and Incredibly difficult on the outside L Roa you know it it's very tough when you turn in you lose always the rear exactly always the rear because he's down and then he's flat when you turn left and so you lose the rear do you think Lando wasn't expecting it is that one of the reasons Oscar was able to pull it off he's thought brilliant I've got my I've got my buffer I've got my teammate behind me all is good and then suddenly the teammates up alongside him and going around the outside yeah for sure also because the first part of the race you want to treat the tires well know in the first few laps just to have the Rhythm later on in the race so probably after the the fast exit of the fish Kane Lando thought it's fine just we finish ended up this lap probably I'm going to push end of a scar and parabolica to have the Gap the position is save and thinking about the Victory and then P boom surprising wait that type of maneuver is from Ven and Hamilton eh I think he's top level one not easy not everyone can do it not everyone in Formula One maybe only five or six look is is part of McLaren's problem if we can call it that that they have two number one drivers that is actually something that Zack Browner said this weekend at Monza that we have two number ones and if we've got poer Grand PRI veki Grand PRI would you employ two number ones or actually are you just complicating things making things more difficult for yourself actually do you need Lando Norris as your number one and a completely Oscar Oscar's too good yeah sometimes the move and the attitude of Oscar pastri is too strong and too and too good to say you are the number two sure but is a a fact this season that Norris is more constant has more speed in general and usually was able to treat the is better during since that the experience of of London Norris was giving me more chances during the season and the standings is speaking that London ores has much more point but it's not so easy to to consider pastri a second driver because he's bloody quick in some of the races and this maneuver and this attitude to start every time well to be so aggressive in a certain part of the race how you can say that London that Oscar pastri is not going to be our champions in the future I mean he has all the quality if he puts all together all the 25 races with with a right car next season it can be how do you say it can be one of the top Contender absolutely and for that reason that is why I understand why they're not asking piastri to to to support Lando Norris at this stage I think I think they have to keep both guys happy and and as Lando said in the press conference I'm having to do it on my own I'm having to do it on my own and I would love some support but I don't want to ask for support because I'm a racing driver and I saw the implication was I understand why why Oscar doesn't want to do it now look what a what about Lando I think was a little bit nervous going into this race because of you know he's had a few start issues uh this year this was the fifth time he started on poll and it was the fifth time that he not been in the lead at the end of lap one now he got away from the line well actually I thought his reaction was very good he didn't have the wheel spin that he had in zanor but the poor guy was still not leading at the end of lap one yeah I think the star was wasn't wasn't that bad it's also that today you know it's it's Monza and uh Monza you have two very long straight lines and two big breaking zones so it's two real uh big opportunities to overtake and uh I think uh today we cannot blame him about about the the the start I I love Lon Norris sometimes he's just a bit too kind sometimes they are seeing he's always missing the start and I heard someone very expert in Italy saying he's weak he's weak this man is flying this man is the second best in the world at the moment this man already won two races this year is often on PO position so is one of the best driver for for sure in in the world if not the best at the moment so how we can say that this man is weak this man is special but sometimes probably today I got to interrupt you I don't think anyone is saying he's weak he's very self-critical I feel he invites people to say that by saying I didn't the number of times we've heard Lando say I didn't do a good enough job too kind not weak it's just too kind also because if you if you if you redo the start just after the fishi you are Lon Norris and you know for sure that tosas pastri instead of being quiet and behind and protect the top two position is going to attack you at the end of the the the straight at lar Roa for sure he could move a bit in the break one zone move a bit on the straight try to call and to force him out I mean if was if was not uh pastri but was Hamilton for the fight for the victory at the last lap for sure we could see a different Landon noris H waving more being more aggressive being at the limit of the regulation but he was so kind cuz it was his teammate he wasn't expecting it but but his teammate was a bit more aggressive you know and on that on that yeah the teammate was a killer and he was not expecting it exactly yeah it was a little bit more yeah it was okay he didn't judge very well the the situation I'm sorry for it because I think it's special and he was extremely confident for this start London Norris he started very well he crossed immediately the line and said wow that is London noris we did it him and then but just to follow up on something you've just said I would love I would love to hear Lando being um just more positive about himself about his performances because he is as you say the second best driver in the world at the moment behind Max fora and he's driving beautifully I thought it was interesting actually in the press conference on Thursday he started talking about how nervous he gets before a race how he can't eat anything on Sundays because he feels he can't because his his stomach can't take it and um I thought that was very open of him uh so on the one hand he's very self-critical then he's also very open and just I don't know what his Rivals make of the sort of stuff he's saying in the Press at the moment I think yeah first of all speaking about um you know the the the stress he he can have he can feel before the the races I think it's the first time is fighting for for the championship we can say it is fighting for for the championship for both championships actually uh fighting for a race win every weekend so I can understand it is stressful for sure uh because because he wants to do well um he is one of the best drivers um in the world um but yeah for sure he has everything to do well I think uh it's easy to to to say in my position I'm not uh I'm not uh in the McLaren and I'm not uh fighting for a race win every weekend but for sure it can be can be a lot more calm and um he doesn't need to to stress himself that much why if in the press conference this man it's honest why we need to consider it a weakness I know that some of the Rival listening to Lando Norris say I need to do better I was wrong here what's wrong there they start to think come on it's not so self-confident like me I'm going to destroyed him but why from outside listening maybe the only man that is saying I was wrong here was wrong there being completely 100% honest I canot I'm not able to judge a h like a like a weakness I think he going to become a world champion I agree and then after this season we are going to say when I thought that thing about London Norris I was wrong I I hope I hope for and every time I meet him I'm saying you the best one you are my hero keep pushing every time believe me because I realize that sometimes after the race he's so disappointing because he didn't want or so disappointed because maybe they made maybe made a little mistakes and uh I feel for him believe me I feel for him I don't know he's racing so well he's racing so good he's so quick he has so many points and he's always so critical with me with himself I don't get it right guys what about about Red Bull they finished Sixth and eighth but there's now just eight points between them and McLaren in the Constructor standings straight up why why were they so off the pace here at Monza well that's a that's a very good question since a few races now they're struggling quite a lot but this race weekend was quite huge to be honest to to be struggling in qualifying to be struggling in the race I think in the in the race race and never even Max veren was trying to wake his team up and trying to say things in the radio but nothing was uh was happening and uh they were a bit stuck in that position Perez was not too far from from the Sten which which is uh a bit better I guess uh for for Red Bull but still P they finished P6 and and p8 McLaren P2 P3 I think it they are going to close the gap really really really quick Ferrari and McLaren I think they're gonna in the next few races if if the trend is the same Red Bull is gonna lose his um they are going to lose the the first place for sure for the first time in a while I saw Mark Vesta and during the weekend performing uh not in a different level of Sergio Perez they were extremely close was a while I why why was that was because had Perez raised his game or was Max struggle I don't know probably probably he started uh he started to feel what what T was saying probably started to feel that McLaren is going to do it that London Oris destroying everyone in zand is going to win Mon and then in the next one and then the next one and then he going to close the gap I don't know but he a fact that Max vapen it's a while that he on another level of paret and tell me about the quali but this Mark V happen and no one is complaining I mean this kid is amazing this kid already got three world champion all the criticals is always on N but uh the stening c three was not on this level he made a mistake in the first try he made a mistake at the exit of um of lar Roa I know that is easy to say and speak about mistakes but it was not perfect in in ascari I mean that La was not good at all Alp a second behind Lis Hamilton same 10th of his teammate I mean was okay was no special and we were used we got used to see aaen by far better than anyone else for this weekend for the first time probably this year we saw we saw a normal vesten always a very good driver no big mistake during the the race but his team made the wrong piss stop 4 second and a half slower when he was pushing he was not able to manage the tius he was not able to control the degradation unusual for is driving style and from where we what we are used to see and when uh when the engineer told him to raise up the level there was no more it didn't increase the lap time I mean I don't know it was just a Formula One driver and not one of the best in the history like we are used to see it's extraordinary that rb20 I I I just to follow its it's progress this year I mean you only got to go back to spa and he put the thing on poll okay he had a grid penalty so he didn't start on pole but that was by far the quickest combination at Spar and that was just before the summer break and yet here we come to Monza it's a sort of similar downforce level here and they were nowhere I can't I mean put yourself in Max for stappen shoes I mean I think it's tough I think it's tough when you are used to win everything literally everything by a lot of margin and then suddenly you see yourself struggling to get on the podium struggling to to fight for for for a race win and and you see your team struggling and you cannot do anything about it because I think he's trying to to help the team he's is's the number one driver of the team you know uh the I mean it's Ma verst and there's no doubt about his driving skills and his motivations but but it looks it looks strange you know that's the first time in a while we we see him struggling and we see Red Bull struggling a lot so yeah I think we need to say Tom I'm asking to you I heard that he has some trouble he had some trouble with the engine also during the race yeah he came up he came up in the press conference with happen at depend some of the your colleagues saying that uh he was struggling with the engine seems that he had he had some technical issue also during the race that can explain why it was not on his normal level because he was very slow also in the first and the in the third sector the only one where when fresh tus he was appearing a bit competitive was the middle one where there is the corner lesmo one and lesmo 2 and in the straight is true that also from the timing shift seems that there was something unusual but but again but but it's what we've actually been saying which is they've had bulletproof reliability for the last three years so it's a you know okay he had an engine problem we're not used to seeing them have an engine problem so I think it's it's worrying times at Red Bull absolutely no doubt I thought Christian hoer after qualifying look I thought very concerned because I think they were lost they didn't know why the car is not quick over one lap and I think that uh Red Bull to win this driver Championship is going to need uh a Max ven better than the beginning of the Season better than last year Max Ven and better than the max ven the fight over the limit every single race against Lis Hamilton I think that they're going to need an unbelievable driver it's going to be tough for them so you think 62 points which is the gap between Max and Lando isn't enough with eight to go I don't know if Lando if Lando is start to scoring victories one after the other for three or four weekends is going to scar everyone but the problem is that we are close to do it why we are not helping him try at least in mon try just to say at the first lap be calm try to protect the position no attack between you two guys all the all at the beginning and then at the end free to race papaya rules and all the story let's try at least to achieve that I think that McLaren is a they have in mind only the Constructor Championship and for the D one they are thinking about next season that's my feeling okay there were 100,000 tifosi celebrating the Ferrari victory in Ferrari's return to form after the summer break but I think there was also a Dutchman because it helps Max fappen that charir is taking points away from Lando Norris and that could be a crucial Factor as we get into the business end of this world championship yeah but how we change the the situation in Formula One so quickly yesterday we were saying the same story but in favor orando Norris oh Ferraris Ferrari and Mercedes are in the middle between Norris and vesten if Norris is going to win tomorrow vesten is going to lose so many points and today is the opposite so you know that's racing [Music] look you mentioned Mercedes um Hamilton comes home P5 Russell's p7 they must they must be disappointed right when you look back to the early part of this weekend Hamilton was fastest in fp2 with the long runs on Friday he was then fastest in fp3 uh on Saturday morning Russells started third and he managed to pull that lap time out despite having limited mileage because Kimmy Antonelli had crashed his car on a he missed fp1 for Kimmy Antonelli then of course he missed half of fp2 um because they were mending the car so to do that lap time I thought was a phenomenal effort by George Russell so where did the pace go in the race seems was not there because it's a fact that um in uh in Spa so you need the long the the straight in the the speed in the long straight and you need to be strong in the first corner so in Sp they were from Al race to theand they were the quickest but here they didn't they didn't have the speed I mean they had this phenomenal lap from Georgia in quali having having Hamilton also a little bit hungry because he said that it could be much more in front he said that he didn't drive so well in quali but then today Hamilton didn't have the speed Russell when he was coming back he was around the speed of paret there were more or less half a second away from the the the rhythm of the other to be honest half half race to the end so I don't know was not a big surprise for me I I was not expecting them fight for the victory I think they they they are really disappointed because the fight is so close for the for the podiums and the wins but they are not here for the fight they are just behind this fight so um and now it's for sure very close between four cars let's say uh the two McLaren and the Ferraris but sometimes you can see veren making the difference a little bit uh sometimes you we saw the Mercedes is capable of of winning races uh with with leis with George uh but since a few races um it's a bit more difficult and here in Monza they were just simply not not in the fight um after the start we we just saw George uh going in the runoff into turn one then nothing nothing happened for Mercedes in the race you know they were just not in the pace of the the top four uh top four cars probably the truck uh changed a lot the level of the performance of the car because in Spa they were the best one during the race then we went to zand where they were struggling so much then they came here in the Free Press sometimes seems that they were flying then in quali they start to lose a bit Yeah but today the Gap was bigger than in quali but I I'd like to have seen what George Russell could have done today without the front wing damage without the problems he had at turn one we just don't know but I look at the long run pace of the car on Friday and go maybe maybe there was something there yes I think Lewis was struggling a bit but we never really saw what George could do today yeah I agree with you George we could not see him because he had the mistakes at the first Corner was not very lucky yeah we need to say and then he had the contract he damaged the front wing it was very very far away he was in traffic all race he got the position at the end on parrot and that was a good move because he lost a lot of time in the pit changing the front Wing so probably his race was not so bad but when you were watching the race space on the lap time seems that L cler with uh with Ferrari they were better than him also in in the in controlling and managing the degradation so I don't know sometimes ups and down is not easy to to to judge them the only team that is sure that he has the performance is McLaren you change the circuit you con the truck the fastest in the in the in the world the slow one of the slowest in zandor and they are always there in Monte Carlo by far the slowest in medium average speed they almost win with with osar past they were very close here they were very close to the victory they lost but they were there in U in zandor they W they were the best by far so the team that is always is delivering the performance at the moment is McLaren the other they are doing upside down that is why McLaren I think are going to win The Constructor Championship he going to be in front uh already in the next race looks probably yeah I think so I think so and Ferrari is not far behind too so guys before we move on from Mercedes there was big news this weekend about 2025 this hugely exciting prospect in Kimmy Antonelli confirmed as George Russell's teammate for next season um just love to get your reaction to let's start with you about Antonelli he's just 18 yeah I think you know I think it's good to see uh some young drivers getting the chance to go to F1 um I think it's not going to be an easy task for him because jumping straight to Mercedes replacing amilton um being teammate with with Russell uh who is one of the best best drivers on the grid it's going to be tough it's going to be tough uh he had a unfortunately a bad first experience in fp1 but it you know those kind of things can can happen he was pushing it's a racing driver you know as a racing driver we we want to push the the limits so he did a mistakes you know he's a young driver so T can I say so you know that you're going to be announced as a Mercedes driver on Saturday morning all right it's Friday morning the team puts you on the soft tire I was surprised that they put him on the soft tire so soon in that first practice session because I felt it invited him for sure to go and do some heroics when perhaps he could have done with getting 20 laps on the board just to get used to you know he's an young Italian driver he's at Monza he he knows he's going to be announced the next day maybe they were inviting trouble by doing that so early in the in the session but still he was phenomenally quick he he did one flying lap and was by far the fastest guy on the track and then it all went wrong on his next flying lap sure yeah I mean and you you're true when you you said I mean he was aware he signed the contract a few weeks ago probably to to race next year so um he was aware that uh it was going to be announced so that was that was for sure not necessary to to to to push that hard and to there was a lot of expectations on him there's still a lot of expectations for for next year so uh uh probably wanted to to prove too much I think there's nothing to to prove at the moment he he has the the seat ready for him next year he just need to get more experience uh F1 is is a very difficult World um a lot of differences with F2 much more people to work with much more pressure uh car much quicker and uh you have to give yourself the time to learn a little bit you know you don't have much much time in F1 but you need to give yourself at least a few um I mean a bit of time to learn said over the weekend we need to teach him the difference between fp1 and qualifying right and this was fp1 but let's turn to our Italian friends I have I have some question go on first of all I cannot be 100% honest because I love that kid Kim tonell and uh I want to want I want to see him in Formula One so badly so he crash I don't care but my question is why Toto wolf is is risking so much why they're running so so fast with his career I mean the man is talented right they are saying everyone is saying that same level of talent of Hamilton of uh uh of Ven they saw him in the lower categories something unbelievable why they're running so much why they let him Miss Formula 3 jumping in middle in Formula 2 Why without without fighting for the championship they promote it in Formula One immediately why rushing so much with the soft tires in the first fp1 why promo him immediately in a top team in Formula 1 without using Williams as experience one or two years like they did with Russell why taking an 18 years old to replace the best driver in the history of Formula 1 that is L Hamilton I I I cannot understand why Toto wolf that always did the opposite is rushing is rushing so much with my Italian Star I'm I'm only worried with for my one I don't want to hear next season ah he needs some more time to have experience because I know that this man needs a bit more experience yeah when he crashed the car he was flying he was flying because he did half an hour of free practice 40 40 minutes of repr practice in Formula 2 the asphalt was new the curb was new everyone is not pushing because with the same set he's going to set the best lap time and so Hamilton was taking easy he was rushing as hell and then he crashed because probably he's lacking a bit of experience he almost crashed science in the last few laps do you remember in parabolica but with experience probably he could save it so it's normal the crush I don't care why they rushing so much with his career when when Carlos sints was available to put in the car for next year right one year for seeing him battling for the Formula 2 Championship one year in Williams ready to rock the world 20 years old perfect time I'm worried for his career because I want to have him so badly Racing for the world championship in Formula 1 and and I cannot understand why Toto wolf is always did the the opposite and now he's russing so much with a career with a young star I think this man is extraordinary we need to let every the time to understand and to have the feeling of the pressure of Formula 1 how is running already this happen in the first season you were against him he's a bit dangerous he's too risky he's only 17 why the rule was changed to 18 yeah but and veran was with toroso at the at the time so they didn't put him straight to Red Bull which is which would have been more complicated I guess he has the talent he's the best driver in the world but maybe it would have changed a little bit the the story if uh he he arrived straight to Red Bull because it's much more complicated to arrive to to a top team yeah so why why Tom why why they change so much the approach in Mercedes top team I am is my question I'm actually agreeing with you but there is a but in this Antonelli could have said no n no no my friend no no my friend wait if you are the driver and Formula 1 calls you and this Mercedes team calls you you cannot say no if you are the driver if you have the father of the driver if you have the manager of the driver you need to answer yes is no there's no way that's the glory forever of your life you cannot answer if you if you if you sit on Mercedes considering that the championship is 25 races and you can survive to the first half of the Season you can fight for the podium and for the victory in the last five in the last half of the season and that's the glory so I it's incredibly risky but the driver cannot say no why a team manager so expert for a top team is going to risk that's my question is the normal one we are saying Logan sergant doesn't deserve to stay in Formula One because he destroyed the car he made some damage he crash in the first fre practice is incredibly young you want him to rush you want him to bet to beat immediately Hamilton what do you pretend but I've heard Toto wolf compare Kimmy Antonelli to eron Senna and eron S went straight and CNA went straight from F3 to Formula 1 now it was with Tolman it wasn't with the front running team but you know we've still got a few months left of this year he's going to do a whole bunch more testing in the 2-year-old car I think Toto said he's going to have done about 10 days by the by by the end of this year he's going to be back doing an fp1 I think he said in Mexico he's going to have a bit of mileage under his belt and if he is a once in a generation Talent maybe he can deal with it agree with you and I'm honest Toto wouldn't promote him if he didn't think he could deal with it yeah is the type of risk that David vaki could take I mean if I was in that position the torto wolf one I'm so passionate I'm Italian we have always to say I can do it we are used to say this so I'm going to promote Kim andell to replace the best one in the history of Formula One boom I cannot understand why a man of these experien is do it why you can do you can have him in one year when he's completely ready you can have him after the nine final races of the Formula 1 championship 24 with Williams let him race there he has some experience the next and the next year is's going to replace given that Williams would have taken him no no for and I think the fact that Williams didn't take Mick schumacker for these last what were nine races but they put Franco kapino in I thought maybe was proof that maybe maybe Williams isn't a given maybe Williams wasn't a given for Kimmy Antonelli for sure maybe they didn't want to take a Mercedes yeah dri seems that was like that but was a bit a bit less dis risky from my side let him have some Formula 1 experience before to get in in Mercedes last year is for this reason I was hoping for him to to have this chance well and I'm very much reminded of 2007 Lewis Hamilton came in and that first race in Melbourne you know he went he went round the outside of Fernando Alonso in the same car but he'd had two seasons of Formula 3 he'd had the gp2 championship the previous year he was 21 he was 21 mat the head the head is important I can tell you it's very I'm just a bit scared for him that um he's going to happen the same first season of w Sten the first season of w Sten was unb unbelievable if I'm not wrong he ended up 45 points against 19 of science so it was unbelievable he was 17 years old sence 21 but you remember I was in Monaco four or five races into the season he crash in the back of Gran and destroy the car in the your crush yeah at sand sand devot and everyone will say I told you vak he's too young exactly no no he's a huge Talent you need to wait I told you vak he's risky I told you he needed to wait one season one season in Formula 2 I'm worried for Kim an tonelli that is going to happen in the first five or six races this kind of story and I was thinking that the man and the team top team has Mercedes they would not to take this risk using some of the team with M with I don't know some advantage to develop and to rise his kid apart of that I'm sure that in the second half of the season is going to be equal than Russ and of course there is the shadow of Max for stappen let's not forget that Toto wolf tried very hard to get Max Fen for next year Max wasn't available but I think if Fen became available at the end of 25 three into two doesn't go and it creates a huge problem for him if Max comes in for 26 who do you drop George Russell or Kimmy Antonelli yeah you're forced to keep the best one no okay I don't know you I don't know I think I hope I told you that I'm scared for Antonelli I mean we love him and we want to see him succeed in Formula One I could not understand why why they put him in a position so risky apart of that if you wait half of the SE the first half of the season if he can survive to that is going to rock the Formula One and he has the talent to stay there he has the talent to stay in the top six seven probably and so let me see let me see but if you start immediately to say ven ven is not uh is giving problem to the team and it's not going to be so easy for Antonelli you know what it means this is a do not start to create some trouble my friend this is a good segue into talking about olle bman Oliver bman because he going to race so Kevin Magnuson finished 10th in the race today but he got two penalty points for his collision with pi gazley at the Rus shaane takes him to the maximum 12 that a driver is you get banned at 12 um so magneson is going to miss the aaban Grand Prix um olle bman has already been confirmed as the team's driver for next year he's not in contention to win the F2 Championship this year so he's in pole position to get that seat alongside niik hulkenberg he won yesterday he won yesterday in the Sprint here but actually he won twice in Baku last year in F2 didn't he T exactly yeah for sure I I was there and I remember fighting with him um so what kind of a talent is bman he's uh is a really really good driver for sure and uh I think he he deserves his uh his chance in F1 I think he proved it in jeda with jumping in the in the Ferrari at the last moment and uh scoring points uh on debut so yeah I think um yeah he will probably replace uh magnusen in Baku I think it's uh it's going to be a tough task again because it's the first time that he going to drive the full weekend for for us uh the car we know is not as quick as Ferrari so it's we cannot expect him to finish in the points like like he did with with Ferrari but uh but everything can happen in Baku so it's a good place also to take uh I wouldn't say take risks because it's not it's not the the way surprise and B exactly to to surprise people also because watching game in Formula 2 I don't know you need to do something special in in Formula 1 again I mean Formula 2 is been up and down so much he been soften behind our Kim anony yeah almost every time I'm honest almost every time so I mean I I would like to see from him something more so again another proof I know that I'm asking a lot but stay there close to hulkenberg will be the key for me to understand a yeah you're right too he deserve it sure sure I mean it's not his debut cuz obviously he made he had that Ferrari Drive In but but it kind of is his debut as as a as you say a whole gr PRI but what a place to do it Baku I mean that circuit bites doesn't it that c Monza is a much easier place to make your debut like colapinto this week you remember did you remember did you remember the first year in Formula 1 in quali everyone was scatching in the in the slow Chicken close of the castle I mean yeah probably is the worst one after Monaco is the worst one to to to ever go in Formula One yeah yeah but we saw we saw in jet that this man uh has the skill to do it probably he young is still young is not able to put the the performance every time I'm honest in Formula 2 he was very up and down top five uh 15th so but I know that he has the talent for one shot to be up there and probably you know you have the reference of wenberg always constant always fighting ninth 10th 11th position is a good reference to evaluate also driver I'm interesting to to to see him look final one guys Franco kapino finishes 12th in his debut uh qualifying wasn't straightforward for him he ran wide at the second lesmo didn't he so we couldn't really see what he could do over one lap but are we are we as a group impressed by what he did this weekend I think it's he did a really good job for sure uh I real I also think that the Williams is really good on this track in Monza uh um for a few years in a row now uh you know um the car has a great great top speed and I think in in Monza the car the car is great uh we saw it with with albon uh finishing in the points um but uh but he did a great job because that's a lot of pressure you know to to replace some someone midseason uh I mean during the season and uh and and he didn't crush a car he did a few mistakes but that's that's normal you know for a rookie just to learn um and as I said F1 is so complicated that I think he managed it pretty well you know that's a lot of pressure so um add T to to him we spoke with him uh after the race and uh I think they underline that uh he ended up 12 or 13 second behind his teammate and also his teammate Alburn was impressed so during the race that was 53 lap was not so far away considering is starting much more behind than albon in the lap time and so he was happy about the performance and uh also albon say that U he said that kapino had something my question is it's not easy at all to evaluate the Formula 2 driver at the moment so you're saying that Antonelli six in the championship he he replacing is rep is going to be in Formula 1 replacing the best driver in the Formula 1 history six in Formula 2 you are saying that kapino that uh he was or six or seven in the championship before this weekend is going to replace sergeant that handed up Fifth in the championship the year before and so surprised me a bit why sixth is better than fifth okay then my question is you tell me that Burman has some special skills because he shown and he proved it in Formula 1 with Ferrari in jeda and and in Formula 2 in the championship is lost so how can understand how is borto that today destroyed everyone the level is so confused and I always spoke about meritocracy and you are deleting King completely this year and you are just uh I don't know I don't know how to think and how to evaluate the driver in Formula 2 from my point of view borito and Aon they have something and they're not considering in Formula One that is my feeling I feel I feel that borto and Aon Paul Aaron they have something special I would like to see them in Formula 2 it's it's confusing the situation we promote bman because he proved in Formula One yeah but BTO never had the chance ex why we don't give him the chance probably he's going to win the championship as a rookie already last year did it in Formula 3 I mean it deserves something someone is going to test him at the end of the season or no no it's a very good point I don't know how to judge the lower category at the moment in Formula 2 because seems that count much more being involved in a uh unior Team of the of the squad that being competitive in the championship for me it's it's I agree with you it's super important to judge the drivers in a series where everybody has the same same cars even if some teams are stronger than others but if you always promote the the the the fifth or sixth in the standing in F2 and never the the P1 or P2 then there you know you can have a small issue there you know you need to also there's a lot of pressure you know performing in F2 and F3 is not easy uh you know that every teams is every Formula One team is looking at you um and you have to perform well you have to do things well you know but in the end if you win or if you do P2 or P3 the guy that it finish P6 will have a chance before you it's it's it's a bit strange confused very confused what a weekend for the Italian one for narol won the Formula 3 Kim Antonelli got the dream place in Formula 1 and Ferrari won at the last the Formula One racing months I mean come on it was a great I Cann not be happier but on the topic of F2 I thought it was very interesting earlier in the year that iok kamatsu team principal of H said that he was much more concerned about how bman performed for the team in fp1 than how he performed in F2 why because he said prer Ban's team were struggling in F2 therefore if he's battling for sixth place whatever it wasn't relevant he but there we that that I thought summed up maybe the attitude of the F1 paddock at the moment F2 is so unpredictable it's so dependent on your team but uh we also needed to remember need to remember that they are not always right so too we cannot manage a team we don't have the skill sure but believe me they are not always right why they choose a sergeant to replace him mid of the season they were not right why they choose Mick schumacker to cut him after two season they were wrong so I agree with you but uh I know I know how to drive and I don't know how to drive good enough as the Formula One driver but I know how to drive to arrive close to there why KATU knows more than me I don't care I don't care what he's saying to you I don't care that he's saying that for free practice one counts more why do you think that Hamilton in free practice one is 110% come on that man pull off the last three test in the three sure come on do you think that ven is showing you how to fall on the line in free practice one my friend you're dreaming or you never used a racing car in motorport so he can say whatever he wants I have my personal opinion and I'm saying Tom that I'm disappointed because I cannot evaluate the young driver at the moment and I'm so confused so the top 10 looked like this Charla Clair took his second win at Monza Oscar pastri was second and pulit Lando Norris was third science was fourth for Ferrari with Hamilton the lead Mercedes driver in fifth Championship leader vapen was sixth with Russell seventh down from third on the grid Perez e8th albor 9th and Magnus 10th for Hass in the driver championship vastaa is still top of the tree but Norris has closed to within 62 points ler is third 24 points further back then comes piastri in fourth on 197 points 13 ahead of Science in fifth Hamilton is sixth Perez seventh Russell 8th Alonzo 9th and stroll 10th in the constructor's championship things are really hotting up Red Bull still lead but they're only eight points ahead of McLaren in second and 39 points ahead of Ferrari in third Mercedes are a lonely fourth 115 points behind Ferrari and 218 points ahead of Aston Martin in fifth and then it gets close VB are sixth on 34 H are seventh on 28 Alpine are eighth on 13 Williams are ninth on 13 and Saba are still yet to score in 10th at the end traditionally we have our driver of the day I'm going to ask each of you to give me that name Tor you you look armed and ready go on who's your driver of the today in the Italian Grand Prix well for me I think it's a pretty pretty easy choice and I'm going to say charl lir because the tire management was amazing the opportunity took at the start by overtaking Norris who was in trouble at the second chicane because of the move with pastri was was really important and and and I feel like it's a very important win for him and for Ferrari at a very important moment so yeah charl Clair is is the driver of the day for yeah I'm I'm struggling to think of anyone other than sha myself utterly brilliant and I think you're probably going to say the same thing without L cler I don't think that was so easy for Ferrari to get this Victory so I think was the key man strategy with him strategy with without him we saw with the I think was his weekend and his his momentum is delivering so well in the last three races wow I'm loving in y I agree and I think with Ferrari building this momentum I think everybody here in Italy and around the world the tifosi can be very excited about 2025 yeah I agree and also I think that I'm personally thinking that L cler is preparing himself to react of the impact of Lil for the next season the legend is arriving at your home and as soon as Hamilton is going to take the first Victory all the people in the world they are speaking about it and so you're going to be the second one so he's preparing himself to react to this moment to be first race of the next season I'm leair pull and victory fastest lap just at the end he needs he needs it and then pushing for him very interesting point well guys thank you both too David day thank you for joining us as ever quick shout out about this week's F1 Beyond The Grid which is with v carbs Yuki sonoda poor Yuki uh retired from the race today in fact he doesn't have any luck at
