>>> WELCOME BACK TO "THE DAILY REPORT" I'M JERICKA DUNCAN. TONIGHT IS THE FIRST AND POSSIBLY ONLY TIME VICE PRESIDENT HARRIS AND FORMER PRESIDENT TRUMP WILL FACE OFF ON A DEBATE STAGE. THERE IS NO LIVE AUDIENCE, NO OPENING STATEMENTS AND THE MICROPHONES WILL BE MUTED WHEN IT IS NOT THEIR TURN TO SPEAK. WHILE PREPARING FOR THE DEBATE, A SOURCE TELLS CBS NEWS THAT HARRIS AND FORMER SECRETARY OF STATE HILLARY CLINTON SPOKE OVER THE PHONE THIS WEEKEND. CLINTON, WHO DEBATED TRUMP THREE TIMES DURING THE 2016 ELECTION OFFERED HER ADVICE. HARRIS HAS ALSO BEEN PREPARING BY HOLDING MOCK DEBATES. >>> SOURCES SAY TRUMP'S PREPARATION HAS INCLUDED REVIEWING POLICY POSITIONS WITH ADVISORS. TRUMP WON A COIN TOSS LAST WEEK TO DECIDE PODIUM PLACEMENT OR THE ORDER OF THE CLOSING STATEMENTS. HE ELECTED TO HAVE THE FINAL STATEMENT OF THE NIGHT. >> JON DELANO JOINS US NOW. HE IS A POLITICAL EDITOR OF KDKA, OUR STATION IN PITTSBURGH. OUR LATEST POLLING SHOWS THAT VOTERS IN PENNSYLVANIA SPLIT ON HOW THEY ARE VOTING. IT IS 50-50 FOR HARRIS RIGHT NOW VERSUS TRUMP. PENNSYLVANIA IS VERY WELL. YOU HAVE DONE THE POLITICAL ANALYSTS AT KDKA FOR 30 YEARS. YOU HAVE TALKED TO MANY OF THE MEMBERS OF THE CABINET, CURRENTLY. DO YOU THINK THERE IS ROOM FOR THE DEBATE TONIGHT TO CHANGE PEOPLE'S MINDS, BASED ON ALL OF THE BACKGROUND AND KNOWLEDGE THAT YOU HAVE? >> FIRST, IT IS GREAT TO BE WITH YOU. I APPRECIATE THE OPPORTUNITY TO TALK. I GUESS I HAVE A FEW YEARS ON ME, COVERING ELECTIONS OVER THE LAST THREE DECADES. I CAN'T HELP THAT. OF COURSE THERE IS ROOM TO CHANGE PEOPLE'S MINDS. WE'VE GOT TWO MONTHS TO GO BEFORE NOVEMBER 5 AND THAT ESSENTIALLY MEANS THAT THERE IS OPPORTUNITIES TO PERSUADE SOME PEOPLE. I THINK IT IS TRUE THAT THERE IS A LOT OF HARDENING OF THE LINES IN SUPPORT OF DONALD TRUMP OR KAMALA HARRIS BUT THE MEASURE IN-BETWEEN, THE PEOPLE IN BETWEEN WILL MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN THE SELECTION AND I DO THINK THIS DEBATE -- REMEMBER THE LAST DEBATE WITH PRESIDENT BIDEN. THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING. SOMETHING COULD HAPPEN TONIGHT. THAT IS WHY WE SHOULD ALL BE WATCHING THE DEBATE, TO SEE WHAT TRANSPIRES BUT I REALLY DO BELIEVE THAT THERE ARE PEOPLE WHO ARE NOT WEDDED TO ONE CANDIDATE OR ANOTHER FIRMLY HERE IN PENNSYLVANIA. >> HOW SHOULD BOTH CANDIDATES PITCH THEMSELVES TONIGHT TO THOSE UNDECIDED OR ON THE FENCE PENNSYLVANIA VOTERS? >> IT IS A GREAT QUESTION AND IT IS ONE THAT I AM SURE THAT CAMPAIGNS HAVE AGONIZED OVER FOR MONTHS, TRYING TO FIGURE OUT WHAT THEY WILL SAY AND DO. FOR DONALD TRUMP, IT IS TO REASSURE -- WE ARE TALKING ABOUT PEOPLE IN THE MIDDLE WHO DON'T KNOW WHICH WAY THEY ARE GOING. FOR DONALD TRUMP, IT IS TO REASSURE PEOPLE THAT HE IS NOT NUTS, HE IS NOT CRAZY, THAT HE DOES NOT GO OFF THE WALL ONE WAY OR ANOTHER, THAT HE IS NOT A MISOGYNIST, JUST SOMEONE WHO ATTACKS AND ATTACKS BUT RATHER, FOCUSES ON HIS ACCOMPLISHMENT -- ACCOMPLISHMENTS. FOR KAMALA HARRIS, IT IS REASSURING PEOPLE THAT SHE IS UP FOR THE JOB. THERE WAS A LOT OF QUESTIONING AS TO WHETHER OR NOT SHE IS CAPABLE OF DOING THIS JOB AND I THINK THERE IS EVERY REASON TO BELIEVE SHE IS. SHE HAS BEEN VICE PRESIDENT, A U.S. SENATOR, A DISTRICT ATTORNEY. SHE HAS YEARS OF GOVERNMENT EXPERIENCE, FAR MORE THAN DONALD TRUMP. THE QUESTION IS, REASSURING PEOPLE THAT SHE IS ON TOP AND THAT SHE HAS SPECIFIC POLICIES THAT PEOPLE WANT TO HEAR ABOUT. THAT IS HER GOAL TONIGHT. THEY ARE BOTH DIFFERENT GOALS BUT THEY CAN BOTH ACHIEVE THEIR GOALS IN ONE DEBATE. >> WE JUST HAD A GRAPHIC UP THERE TALKING ABOUT DO YOU KNOW WHAT THE CANDIDATE STANDS FOR. LIKE YOU SAID, HITTING HOME ON WHO ARE YOU AND WHO WILL YOU BE IF YOU ARE IN THE SEAT? ACCORDING TO OUR POLLING AS WELL, THE TOP FACTOR WHEN CONSIDERING WHO VOTERS WILL VOTE FOR IS ALL ABOUT THE ECONOMY. THAT IS A PRETTY BROAD TOPIC, SPECIFICALLY IN PENNSYLVANIA. WHAT ARE THE MAJOR ECONOMIC ISSUES FACING VOTERS RIGHT NOW IN THE KEYSTONE STATE? >> I WILL ANSWER THAT QUESTION BUT I WANT TO ADD THIS, IF I MAY. THAT IS THAT THIS ELECTION IS ABOUT THE FUTURE. WHETHER YOU HARKEN BACK TO THE DONALD TRUMP FUTURE, BECAUSE HE WOULD SAY THAT IS WHAT HE IS DELIVERING THE FUTURE, OR TO A DIFFERENT VISION OF THE FUTURE FROM KAMALA HARRIS, I THINK BOTH OF THESE CANDIDATES WILL NEED TO TIE THAT INTO THEIR MESSAGE THIS EVENING AND THE ECONOMY IS VERY IMPORTANT IN PENNSYLVANIA AND THERE IS A DIFFERENT WAY OF APPROACHING IT, DEPENDING ON WHICH PART OF THE STATE YOU LIVE IN. I THINK WE WILL TALK ABOUT ONE OF THOSE ISSUES IN A MINUTE. THE TRUTH IS, PEOPLE ARE FEELING THE PINCH. WAGES HAVE NOT GONE UP AS HIGH AS SOME PEOPLE WOULD LIKE. UNEMPLOYMENT IS DOWN BUT I THINK THERE ARE A LOT OF CONCERNS. IT IS NOT CLEAR THAT PEOPLE ARE ANY BETTER UNDER DONALD TRUMP. BOTH CANDIDATES WILL MAKE THE CASE FOR WHY THEY ARE BETTER EITHER NOW OR FOUR YEARS AGO. VOTERS WILL BE LISTENING REALLY STRONGLY. >> THE OTHER TOPIC YOU ARE TALKING TO IS FRACKING. WE HEAR THAT ALL THE TIME IN THE GREAT STATE OF PENNSYLVANIA WHICH I ALSO USED TO LIVE IN. WHAT IS FRACKING? EXPLAIN THAT TO OUR VIEWERS AND HOW BIG IS THAT? >> OKAY. FRACKING IS AN IMPORTANT PART OF NATURAL GAS DELIVERY. IT IS A METHOD BY WHICH YOU EXTRACT NATURAL GAS, THE CLEANEST POSSIBLE FUEL IN AMERICA. IT IS ALSO ONE THAT HAS ISSUES BECAUSE METHANE GAS WILL BE ADMITTED AND KAZ -- CAN CAUSE PROBLEMS. ESSENTIALLY, IT IS DRILLING STRAIGHT DOWN AND THEN A SPIDERWEB. YOU HAVE TENTACLES THAT REACH OUT FOR MILES THAT COLLECT THE NATURAL GAS AND TIGHTKNIT BACKUP. NATURAL GAS IS THE WAY THAT WE HEAT OUR HOMES IN PENNSYLVANIA? WE ARE THE SAUDI ARABIA OF NATURAL GAS. WE HAVE A LOT OF NATURAL GAS JUST LIKE SAUDI ARABIA HAS OIL. IT IS A BIG ISSUE IN WESTERN PENNSYLVANIA. IT IS ALSO A CONCERN FOR ENVIRONMENTALISTS BECAUSE OF SOME OF THE REASONS I CITED EARLIER AND THE POLITICIANS WHO ARE GOOD AT THIS, AND GOVERNOR JOSH SCHAPIRO IS ONE OF THEM, HIS PREDECESSOR WAS TO. THEY INSIST THEY ARE NOT OPPOSED TO FRACKING BUT THAT THEY WILL FIND BETTER WAYS TO CAPTURE POLLUTION FROM FRACKING AND TO KEEP PEOPLE SAFE AND SOUND. I HAD INTERVIEWED PRESIDENT BIDEN. I HAD FOUR INTERVIEWS WITH JOE BIDEN DURING THE 2020 ELECTION AND AND EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THOSE INTERVIEWS, HE MADE A POINT OF SAYING, I DO NOT OPPOSE FRACKING. I DO NOT OPPOSE FRACKING. OBVIOUSLY, THE CANDIDATES THINK IT IS AN IMPORTANT ISSUE. OUT HERE IN THE WESTERN PART OF THE STATE, REALLY A CRITICAL ISSUE. WE WILL WATCH AND SEE IF ANYBODY TALKS ABOUT IT TONIGHT. >> MY BET IS THEY WILL BRING IT UP. >> THERE HAS BEEN SO MUCH ATTENTION ON PENNSYLVANIA. >> THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR YOUR TIME. >> I AGREE WITH YOU. YOU ARE RIGHT. >> THANK YOU. >>> THE FIRST 2024 PRESIDENTIAL DEBATE AIRS TONIGHT AT 9:00 EASTERN AND IT IS HOSTED BY ABC
