BREAKING NEWS: Chiefs WR Hollywood Brown won't play in next week's season opener, HC Andy Reid says

the NFL where Kansas city wide receiver Maris Hollywood Brown is not expected to play in Thursday night's season opener against the Baltimore Ravens Brown has been dealing with a shoulder injury since the chief's first preseason game he was one of the team's big offseason acquisitions as they try to give Patrick Mahomes more weapons in the wide receiver room along with firstr draft picked Xavier worthy here's more on Brown status from Chiefs head coach Andy Reid yeah I don't think you'll have Hollywood this week so yeah Hollywood won't be back this week and we'll just see how it goes but the kid is amazing I mean his progress has been incredible so but I don't I don't I wouldn't predict uh him being there this week we'll go next to Sam M NFL analyst Ryan Wilson for more on this Ryan first your reaction here Chiefs go out get them a wide receiver a Maris a marquee wide receiver in a Hollywood Brown and here he is not able to make the first game against the team that drafted him the Ravens your reaction uh Jeremy unless Patrick Mahomes changed his name to Mars Hollywood Brown I think the Chiefs are going to be okay uh they knew with the shoulder injury that Maris was going to be out for a little bit so this isn't a huge surprise they also recently signed Juju Smith Shuster who had played for them previously and you talked about drafting Xavier worthy the first round pick out of Texas with this 4-2 speed I think the bigger concern not so much is Hollywood brown but it's the return of uh what they have in Rashid rice because there was some concern that he might be suspended that has yet to take place so he will be there in week one against the Ravens and that's a huge development because last year when you looked at the numbers at the end of the season Jeremy Rashid rice was number two among all rookie wide receivers in receptions in yards and third and touchdowns and he was only behind in two of those category some guy named pukaa so that tells you how important he was and his yards after the catch ability was among the best among all wide receivers last year so to have him out there even if Hollywood Brown is going to be banged up for for several weeks and we don't know how long it's going to be I think that's a a great development for the Chiefs because after they face the Ravens they face the Bengals both games will be in Kansas City so that's the good news maybe Hollywood's back for week two we don't know yet uh but all told George K will be there Patrick Mahomes will be there and we know Andy Reid will be there so those are good starts for that Chief's offense yeah for brown no full season's played since 2021 as he's kind of dealt with injuries the last two seasons of course he spent with the Arizona Cardinals but how big of a blow is this for Hollywood Brown given that he signed a one-year deal has had a couple of season Seasons where he hasn't necessarily been a marquee guy yeah we were talking about this before he came on air Jeremy the the best years for Hollywood weree his first two seasons when he was drafted in the first round by the Ravens uh had an up and down Seasons with uh with the Cardinals and not entirely his fault but the good news is whether you show up in week one or week five or six when you're healthy Patrick Mahomes will be throwing you the football if you find ways to get open uh I think that's the good news in terms of no need to rush Hollywood Brown out there we know what he brings in terms of straight line speed and ability to run away from Defenders and you can guarantee that Andy Reid has plans to use him in that manner but there's also reasons they drafted 4-2 Xavier worthy because he's able to win down the field uh they have Justin Watson he's going to play a big role early on we talked about Jud Smith Shuster so even though Hollywood Brown's not going to be out there against the Ravens in week one that doesn't mean he can't have a big gear and get a big payday at the end of the year if he's able to stay healthy because that's going to be the big concern staying healthy he's he's undersized by wide receiver standards uh but if he's able to get open Patrick Mahomes will certainly find him the football and then I think a lot of those passes will end in huge gains and potentially even touchdowns yeah Brown penel Lin is wide receiver too Juju Smith Shuster also on that line and you mentioned Justin Watson so do you expect a committee approach in terms of wide receiver to here until Brown is 100% cleared yeah and Jeremy I think you could argue that this wide receiver group when when Brown is eventually healthy is better than the one that won the Super Bowl last year when it was a wide receiver by committee and oh by the way we have Travis Kelce as well uh I think that's going to continue to to be their game plan and they keep stockpiling tight ends by the way Jeremy they drafted Jerry Wy uh they traded for for hinder shot recently from the Cowboys so they have a plan to tight end in a post Travis Kelce world too perhaps we see some of that transition happen in the coming weeks and even over the course of the Season uh about how the different ways they can use their eligibles to to get Guys open and let Patrick Mahomes do his thing so I'm not concerned at all uh I wish Maris Brown uh all the health in the world and gets back to 100% as soon as possible but in the meantime Jeremy I feel like the Chiefs are going to be okay offensively yeah you and I were discussing before unless it's Patrick Mahomes or Andy Reid I think the Chiefs are going to be fine were talking about this earlier this is the biggest draft weekend of the fantasy football season so a lot of managers may not necessarily be targeting Hollywood brown but in terms of draft strategy what does this do to his value as people are heading into drafts I mean I mean makes him a bargain I I still think there's a big season ahead for him look he's tied to the best quarterback from a passing perspective he's ever played with CLE he's played with a two-time MVP and Lamar Jackson as well but we know Mahomes from a passing standpoint is clearly a different type of quarterback and being in Andy Reid system and playing with Mahomes you know the opportunity was there for him to have a big year so it's still in front of him but the fact that he's going to Miss Meek one miss week one and may miss week two this was something that was a little frustrating once he suffered the injury in the preseason so I think when you're drafting this weekend you just let him fall and you take him as a fifth receiver maybe a fourth receiver if you love the first three guys you have and you just sort of wait the position out but there's still the opportunity for him to be a Difference Maker look rashy rice probably not going to get suspended but that's still out there Xavier worthy still a rookie wide receiver and we know rookies take time to develop in this offense and Travis Kel's 35 so they were expecting big things from Hollywood Brown I think fantasy managers can still do so as well but you're just going to have to wait it out with Maris Brown so don't draft him to be a starter anytime soon is there another Chief or other Chiefs that you're targeting outside of obviously tra Watson what about Juju Smith Shuster yeah really the only guy is worthy and he's been getting drafted ahead of Maris Brown for several weeks now once the injury happened and you saw some of the plays in the preseason and and the reports in training camp you know you look he's a first round rookie toal and I think everybody's a little bit looking at him from a polarizing perspective the speed receivers at the combine don't necessarily perform well but the speed receivers that end up with Andy Reid and and Patrick Mahomes you're buying into and so he's more than just a fast track guy he's going to make some plays his route tree will be developed uh early on um I don't think they wanted to have to rely on him maybe as much as they have to knowing that they were expecting Maris Brown to be a part of this and and again it may just be one week and so the fact that they're playing on Thursday as opposed to Sunday who knows if he'll be able to play if it was a Sunday night game or Sunday uh uh game in general but look Worthy's got so much upside and potential and once you get past the top two rookie wide receivers there's Marvin Harrison Jr and Malik neighbors then there's the group of guys that any one of them can stand out Above the Rest Brian Thomas Keon Coleman um Romo dun and and Xavier worthy they're all bunched up for me in my rankings I like Thomas the best but Worthy's right up there uh if you want to take worthy as the number one as the third rookie wide receiver number one guy of that bunch I have no problem with him haven't played a game yet but of course uh guys do have their fantasy teams going and we know Jamie that guys you know once guys get hurt sometimes you're pulling the trigger moving things on the roster if you've got Maris Brown on your roster now he's out week one possibly week two is he a guy you're stashing or you going to the waiver wire right away to see if you can find something else oh if he's available on waivers and somebody drops him I'm picking him up right away because again this is a a marathon not a Sprint you're not winning week one you're not winning your fantasy league in week one you're winning it in week 17 so you want to have Maris Brown on your roster but if somebody gets impatient you know a 10 Team league there's a lot of options on the waiver wire uh and somebody does drop him you certainly should be aggressive in getting him but if you are looking for replacement guys you know you're talking about maybe Josh Palmer khil Shakir if they don't get drafted a little bit further down which makes more sense as guys like Donavan Wicks Brandon Cooks uh Gabe Davis in Jacksonville Greg dorch and deeper league in in uh Arizona you know so there's going to be some options on the waiver wire uh but please don't drop Maris Brown don't don't just because he's not playing week one does not mean he's out for the season
