NYC school math scores rose, but some students struggle with reading: data

But reading score slipped by 2.6% to just over 49%. It is a pattern seen in other districts where new literacy strategies has rolled out. Tennessee and Mississippi seeing initial declines in LA scores before seeing significant long-term improvements. New York City schools sought out this new curriculum which educators say is more closely aligns with brain learning science and say this is merely a transitional period. But it also is continuing to shine a spotlight on the disparities and learning between white and Asian children and children of color. About 70% of Asian students. A nearly 66% of white students scoring proficient or above on English exams, compared with nearly 39% of black and 36% of Latino children in math. Similar disparity scene and children with disabilities fare far worse. Their proficiency scores are in the 20% range for both math and reading the school's chancellor reacting to the score saying significant change does not happen overnight and the slight decline in ELA test scores represents a transitional period as our school systems adjust to a new method of instruction. Now schools Chancellor Banks has said that literacy is his absolute top priority. He is focusing the most amount of attention on kindergarten through second grade years because those are the most formative. >> Creating the base from which students can launch. And then, of course, we would see this roll out over the years ahead as they continue to measure them through middle and high school. Those scores really taking a tough hit when it comes to literacy and he wants to see that change dramatically across the 5 boWer'oureg hls.
