Colorado Buffaloes football roster gets another injection of talent as summer work begins (Analysis)

Colorado Buffalo are now two weeks into their summer work Brian this is the first time we've done an in-person video since the spring game how how's life been treating you it it's been very very busy but but pretty good I mean lots of kids things with daughter graduating high school and uh summer baseball with my youngest and track and all those things with the kids so lots of things going on very busy I'm sure the same as for you yeah I mean it started out great we went from the spring game and my wife and I went to Lisbon for a week uh come back get covid and then our house gets destroyed by a hailstorm so it it was a great summer to begin with it's been a little bit challenging but I'm excited to get back talking about Colorado because there's a lot of new talent in this football program uh and you're always a little bit somewhat leery until they get on campus Because we've seen it with DJ Lundy we've seen it with Rashad Amos that it is not binding until you start taking classes so to see those newcomers stand up in the team meeting and you're you're coming down the list you're going oh they got them they got them all so yeah and so that I think you had to feel good about that as a Colorado fan yeah for sure because that is especially when you know Rashad Amos uh very recently uh you know decided to go somewhere else Old Miss I think right um you know it does make you nervous until those guys get on campus so yes when when they do show up in those team meetings there is uh I'm sure for them that little bit of s relief when those guys show up and start moving in and things like that but um that's a big deal for these guys because they you and I have talked about it uh we feel they've gotten better after each transfer portal period uh and but to actually get those guys here like okay now you really are uh you really do have the pieces there to get better and and to be better this summer and so um I think it's a big deal that you know all these guys are here now and uh you know getting acclimated to Boulder and getting acclimated to the team yeah if if you're saying that this program is not better off than it was at the end of last season or at the end of that uh first transfer window then I'm just tuning you out and there are some people nationally that uh they see a Dylan Edwards leave and they overreact and they don't really look at what's coming into the program uh but you look across the board almost every position you can make a very strong case that they are indeed better now running back is the one that's going to get the debate they bring in Isaiah August of who had a nice season last year was a four-star recruit coming out of high school and D Hayden coming in from Ohio State you liked what you saw from Michael Welch what are your thoughts on that position because that's the one that a lot of people are going to point to and go did they get better there or now you know the O Line's going to be better for that group so right there you expect the production of the ground game to get better but that is an interesting tradeoff with Al mccal and Dylan Edwards leaving yeah it is very interesting and you know I was very high on Al mccal and Dylan Edwards I like Savon Wilkerson I mean I liked the group they had last year um so we'll see with this one um are they better I'm not sure I don't I'll say this I don't think they're worse uh are they better we're going to find out but I do like August Dave he finished really strong with Arkansas last year um D Hayden has really good potential uh Michael Welch and you can't forget about Brandon Hood either um you know as a as a kid that you know was a four star until he tears his ACL as a junior um lots of schools backed off of him um and he only had like half of a senior season but looked really good again and uh and see was able to get him along with a bunch of other hood hood brothers and and and guys from that school down there Eagles Landing I think it is um and so I think he's a sleeper I think that he was kind of a steal in that class to get him late and then Charlie Alfred doll um is a guy that is no longer a walk-on you we have to talk about him seriously um not that we didn't have to before but you know Walk-Ons are are different but you know when he's got a scholarship now and all he does is produce you have to look at him and say that's a guy that can produce for you as well and so um you know I I like the group and again I don't know if they're better but they're not going to be worse and I'm glad you brought up Brandon Hood because I think people do forget that he was a pretty highly regarded recruit early on and then went through an injury and then what happens now because the recruiting process is so accelerated for these schools and they're more transfer portal heavy now guys like Brandon Hood can kind of get lost in the mix a little bit and you turn on his film and go what in the why why was this kid still available at this point yeah well and and I did an interview with his brother Colton who's also coming here transfer from Auburn he's a little bit older than his brother U but you know and I know it's his brother but he goes he's the best running back in the country he goes I'm telling you he's the best Prep Prep running back in the country and I said okay well we'll see you know he is bias but you watch the tape and it's hard to argue that you know he's not in that conversation because you're like wow he is pretty impressive in that in that tape and so um I'm looking forward to seeing him I loved what Michael Welch was doing um in the spring as well and so I like this group and that is a position you can see guys come in in play pretty early on as as long as they get some of that pass protection stuff down uh and and now you look at receiver will Shepard's on campus now and you add a cam Mel who looks the part coming in Dron Miller as well uh they already kind of had a really solid group at receiver and now it's bordering on embarrassment of riches at that position yeah Cordell Russell is here now and um obviously Travis Hunter and you know Caleb matths is another walk on that you know you have to factor him in as well because you know he's a favorite Target of shador um you know yeah you go down the list and it's like wow I mean these guys there's so many weapons and and they looked good in the passing game last year without protection you know what are they going to look like with with protection I was talking I did a radio spot recently uh where I was telling them like look I'm a firm believer that if shador gets the type of protection that Michael penck and Bo Nicks got last year he's in New York last year and I think that if he gets even half that he's in New York this year I think that he's that good and I think you you share that uh but you know with these weapons they're GNA have a lot of fun and tight end Sam Hart comes in and this is a guy that maybe isn't going to put up huge receiving statistics but they need him to come in and be the real deal coming in from Ohio State uh because there's not a ton of proven guys at that tight end position they mooved some guys over from defense this spring uh trying to give them a better opportunity to get on the field but uh that's one position we don't quite know how much it's going to be utilized and what the production levels going to be out of that but if you can just at the very minimum have a guy come in there in short yard situations and do his job and you know he's going to get a little bit of a push then I think you're okay with that yeah you know he's a guy that I would hope that Pat Shermer has some wrinkles for him that you know he's not going to catch 30 passes I don't think he's going to have a Michael Harrison type season but you know maybe it's a goal line thing where you know he gets he gets the ball but you know we talk with the running backs I think Sam Hart's a big key to that the offensive line is a key but you got to have a tight end that can block as well if you're going to run the football I think he can do that I think it it reinforces that yayaa was a good ad on that offensive line just looking what he looks like physically coming in here now again you you've got so many guys that now have college experience and that's why you're so much more optimistic about that group's potential this year uh so you want a freshman to come in from England with a lack of experience playing football and develop a little bit but he looks like he could suit up physically from from day one yeah for sure and you know you look at him and also pton Kirkland and uh um Zack Owens yeah that's three extremely large human beings they've added to the offensive line that are young players uh that they don't need to play yet this year because they're they're either in their first or second year of college you can develop those those guys and you know when people talk about you know coach Prime's not looking to the future I look at guys like that and say well yeah he is I mean that's that's developing the line and maybe they can play this year but yeah you look at Yaya it's like yes you can take a chance with a guy like that when he's that large you know you and you know same with those other two guys you've got some really large humans there that you can you can work with on the offensive line and provide some good depth and I like what they have there I I I think they've done a really good job with the offensive line in the off season had another space eater on the defensive line and TFI Thomas comes in the the thing that makes me really excited about that front seven looking at their potential defensively is you you talk about what BJ green has done as a pass rusher what Samuel okola and Deon Harris did Haynes uh did last year La uh leading up uh really getting better as last season went along you like the potential you saw from ardan Walker late last season heard good things about Taj McCoy there's a lot more pass rush talent in this program now and it's hard to Envision that group not being quite a bit better I I liked what Jordan Dominic gave them last year but now you've got so many different pieces that you can count to as far as being disruptive pass rushers yeah for sure I think one of their I think Levante Bentley was one of their top sack guys wasn't he you know top two or three and so um as an inside linebacker I don't know if you necessarily want that you want that coming from the outside but I do think I love Jordan Dominic but I think they they do have more guys that can do that now you need more than one guy and I think they've got two or three uh Quincy Wiggins is a guy also that you have to look at and say you know he can be a pass rush guy um I I like what they have um I think the front Seven's better I don't know how how good it is yet but I think it's better and that group you know we talk about the the the two lines is where they struggle the most I think both of those groups are better than they were last year and if they play a lot better this team's going to be better yeah at cornerback really liked to the the top three guys when when you throw in the nickel back uh with both Preston Hodge and and Travis Hunter working in there this spring and it sounds like Colton Hood speaking of the hood Brothers is made a strong impression now we're we're in summer workouts and uh until you really get the pads on it's hard to say but uh he was somebody that was kind of coming up the ranks at Auburn before he transferred here yeah you know had a good spring at Auburn and you know he he's still a young guy reter freshman got a ton of potential and he's going to push for playing time and um if you've got a good rotation of you know three four five corners there uh you're in really good shape and I think that that gives you that option more that you know you can rest Travis Hunter I know they talk about he doesn't need rest but he really does you know um at times maybe not a ton but you can rest him for a series every now and then if you if you have really good depth with a Colton Hood guys like that and so I'm excited about him I think he's one of those young players that's going to be really good here and on the backend RJ Johnson and Savon Riley coming into the program uh guys from other power for programs and and so you've add a little bit more depth there as well yeah and they need it you know uh you know safety is a spot that they've been pretty good but you know there is that report for from this Summer that Shiloh's had some some shoulder surgery and it's going to be out for a while we don't know exactly how long but um if he is this is really good um protection for that um with the additions I know we're going to get to linebacker but with those additions is Trevor woods now back at safety you know because um I think that's a really good option too if Shiloh's going to be out maybe you're starting safety as are Silman Craig and Trevor woods but then you got RJ Johnson Savon Riley who they're big dudes those are some big safeties and you you got to like what you see but no matter what they do at safety I think they got a lot of talent if I could sit in on any position group you you said we need to talk about linebackers I think I would pick linebackers because of the Personalities in that room uh obviously it starts with Andre Hart their position coach but you look at uh you know the Leadership Retreat and you've got uh vont Bentley that that's taken on a big role and and seems to re feel even more comfortable in his skin being above buff this year as opposed to last year and uh Jaylen w uh he's got quite the personality as well yeah you good personality with all those guys and you're right Andre Hart is one of our favorite coaches to talk to because he's got such good personality Levant Bentley has been more that quiet uh kind of that quiet leader type of guy but you're right he seems to be coming out of his skin a little bit more a little bit more comfortable and yeah you got guys like Wester in there uh there's some fun guys there but they got to play well and a lot of times in the past it would be okay well you're banking on vont Bentley in a Wester Ora Woods and there's not a whole lot depth be behind there you bring in nikai Hill green and you you've brought in more pieces that that are going to be able to compete there yeah Johnny Cheney Jr uh from Florida A&M was a really good player I know um lower level as we talk about sometimes that jump is harder uh but um really good player at Florida A&M and did a really good job there and with nikai Hill Green in there as well I think they got some really good pieces and um I don't know who I'd pencil in as a starter right now I might put niai Hill green there but Trevor Woods uh as far as we know is still there as well Johnny Cheney is going to be a factor Jaylen Wester and so um I'm curious to see what that group looks like obviously there's question marks that they've got to answer but just in terms of the Personnel on this football team uh that's that's where you really feel great about this group going into the the the dog days of summer as they say yeah I think so um I I think this group they seem like they're connected um not only as as a lback group as a team they seem like they're pretty connected and you you got to like that that's always been the big concern with Colorado with the transfer portal is well they going to come together as a team well they seem like they are um but you know we're going to find out you know in August uh late August but it's going to be here fast all right we're going to come back with another analysis video and talk about some of the early start times that have been announced for Colorado football and touch on a few other topics
