Part of Center City in Philadelphia temporarily shutting down to cars every Sunday in September

HAVE WHEN I COME BACK. GUYS. >> TAMMIE, THANK YOU SO MUCH >> HAPPENING TODAY CENTER CITY'S RITTENHOUSE SQUARE NEIGHBORHOOD WILL TEMPORARILY BE PEDESTRIAN ONLY. EVERY SUNDAY THIS MONTH. >> THE HOPE IS TO MAKE PEDESTRIANS SAFER WHILE WALKING AROUND. ALSO TO BOOST LOCAL BUSINESSES IN THE AREA. ROSS DIMATTEI IS LIVE IN CENTER CITY THIS MORNING. AND HAS MORE ROSS GOOD MORNING TO YOU. >> >> GOOD MORNING HOWARD AND JAN, LISTEN IF YOU'RE FROM PHILLY, YOU KNOW RITTENHOUSE SQUARE ONE OF THE BUSTIEST SPOT IN CENTER CITY, SEEN WALKERS DRIVERS JOGGERS. TODAY EACH OF THE FOUR SUNDAYS IN MONTH OF THE SEPTEMBER THIS WHOLE AREA IS GOING TO BELONG TO THE PEDESTRIANS. THEY'RE GOING TO BE CLOSING OFF A LOT OF THE SURROUNDING STREETS TO ANY VEHICLES SO RESIDENT BTS AN PEDESTRIANS CAN ENJOY GREAT BUSINESSES AND RESTAURANTS THAT RITTENHOUSE SQUARE HAS TO OFFER. LET'S SHOW YOU SOME OF THE SIGN THAT IS WE SAW POSTED ALL AROUND RITTENHOUSE OVERNIGHT. THEY ARE BANNING ANYONE FROM STOPPING OR PARKING NEAR RITTENHOUSE SQUARE. ALL SURROUNDING BLOCKS AS WELL TODAY. AROUND EIGHT O'CLOCK IT WAS SUPPOSED TO BE EIGHT O'CLOCK, REALLY ANY MINUTE NOW THE POLICE WILL START SHUTTING DOWN STREETS TO SURROUNDING TRAFFIC. NO VEHICLES ALLOWED TO DRIVE ALONG 18TH STREET FROM CHESTNUT TO LOCUST OR ALONG WALNUT STREET FROM 15TH TO 19TH STREETS. THIS IS THE FIRST TIME CENTER CITY DISTRICT HOSTED EVENT LIKE THIS. WHY NOW? THERE HAVE BEEN SOME LOUD CALLS LATELY FOR BICYCLE AND PEDESTRIAN PEDESTRIANS IN CENTER CITY. ESPECIALLY SINCE 30-YEAR-OLD BARBARA FRIEDAS HIT AND KILLED BY SUSPECTED SPEEDING DRUNK DRIVER WHILE RIDING BICYCLE NEAR RITTENHOUSE SQUARE IN JULY. LED TO VIGIL WHERE ACTIVISTS CALLED ON CITY AND LOCAL LEADER TO IMPLEMENT SAFER BIKE MEASURES. I SPOKE TO RUNNER LIVING AROUND RITTENHOUSE SQUARE. HE AND A LOT OF OTHER RUNNERS LOOKING FORWARD TO CITY SHUTTING DOWN STREETS ON SUNDAYS IN SEPTEMBER >> SEEN AND HEARD AROUND. I KNOW A COUPLE OF PEOPLE. I KNOW THE GUY WHO OWNS PHILLY RUNNER ANDS' REALLY HAPPY ABOUT IT. IT'S GOING TO HOPEFULLY BRING A LOT OF BUSINESS AND THE RESTAURANTS EVERYTHING AROUND HERE. SO IT SHOULD BE REALLY NICE AND OBVIOUSLY WITH THE BIKERS THEY'LL HAVE, YOU KNOW, FREE REIN OF THE STREETS AND EVERYTHING. PEOPLE LIKE MYSELF THAT WALK AND RUN. SO THAT SHOULD BE NICE AS WELL. >>REPORTER: YEAH, REALLY COOL FIRST OF ITS KIND OF EVENT. I SHOULD NOTE THE CITY AS IS OPEN STREETS EVENT IS NOT IN DIRECT RESPONSE TO PRIOR SAFETY INCIDENTS. TODAY'S EVENT RUNS FROM 10 TO FIVE O'CLOCK AND REALLY ENCOURAGING EVERYONE TO GET OUT AND ENJOY THE STREETS THEMSELVES. NOT EVERY DAY YOU GET TO ACTUALLY WALK OUT INTO THE STREETS. GUYS I THINK I'M SEEING AT THE END OF THE BLOCK POLICE PUT THE ROAD CLOSURE IN PLACE. NORMALLY THIS IS A DEATH SENTENCE. WE KNOW DRIVERS DON'T STOP FOR ANYBODY. CHECK IT OUTSTANDING IN THE MIDDLE OF WAY NUT STREET. ONLY DOING IT A FEW TIMES A YEAR. GORGEOUS MORNING. 10 TO 5 TODAY. SUPPORT LOCAL BUSINESS. SEND IT BACK TO YOU >> SURREAL MOMENT WHEN YOU WHACK DOWN THE MIDDLE OF ANY CITY TREAT IN THE MIDDLE OF THE DA
