Glowtime Explained! Is it Worth the Hype on the NEW iPhone 16?

Well, you probably, like me, have just finished watching Glow Time, the Apple event. It finished just over an hour ago. So in the UK, it's now 9:00 in the evening. I'm just sitting down to record this and get my kind of reaction. First thoughts? On the event that we've just had. If you're news channel, by the way, I'm David and I make videos every week about Apple gear purely because I love using Apple gear. Now, the event was the typical kind of Apple event we've got used to. There will be a bit more reading in this video. Normal. Excuse me. As you can understand, there's quite a lot to go through. I want to bring you as much of the information as I can. So basically, in case you missed the event or just want a, a snapshot of what went on, that's what this video is going to be about. We'll look at things in more detail as the weeks and months ahead of us roll along. Was it one of their best? Well, I'd probably be disingenuous to say yes. I wasn't disappointed, but there was definitely some padding. There was a part where Craig was talking about Apple intelligence, and it was just as if it was copy and paste from. I didn't really see why they needed to fill so much time with a literal repeat of what we saw in June, but that's one side. What do we get? Well, again, the rumors were pretty spot on by the end of the day or by last night. This morning, the rumors were pretty spot on. We course got the iPhones 16, 16 plus, 16 Pro and Pro Max. We got new AirPods and we got a new Apple Watch, but only one. We got the Apple Watch ten. But now I see a no watch ultra. So if I. Oh, and I also coined another new term fusion camera. Only Apple and their marketing department come out with this. And as much I say the rumor people got it right. If you watch my video from early today or now, kind of my opinions on rumor sites, we got the name of the capture button wrong. I've got my my dummy unit here. We all thought it was going to be called the capture button. It's not. It's simply called the camera button. And we'll go into that in a little bit more depth later on. So starting off with the watch watch ten, it's bigger, thinner, softer and sleeker. They're the kind of takeaways for the 30% larger, which 30% larger, 20% lighter and 40% brighter. So the larger is supposed to help from viewing angles, I reckon you look at your watch from different angles, which is valid. And of course it's an OLED screen as well. It's only 9.7mm thick, and this is a point I want to bring up. It's got a speaker on it for the first time, so you can listen to music and podcasts on your speaker, which sounds great, but if you're out walking, running, whatever, you're probably not going to want to listen to a speaker. That's that for a small speaker that's that far away from your ears in a fairly noisy environment. So if you're then using it sitting down, say on a train or plane, great. It's another excuse for the people next to me to annoy me. I won't be taking as much. These are kind of handy feature, I suppose. I'm sitting at home over in the kitchen or something. Yeah, but even then the audio is going to be moving in and out, as you maybe has not particularly keen on that. Suppose it's a nice ish kind of addition to it, but I wasn't a fan. There's a new metal back that integrates the antenna into the housing. Now it has got the S10 chip as well. It's available in two finishes now, titanium and aluminum. Obviously the titanium is even light. It's going to be very quick charging charges to eight in only 30 minutes. And I quoted that it's got an 18 hour battery life, which sounds just about reasonable, I guess. It's going to come with watch OS 11. And with that comes some new features and apps. We get sleep apnea, a depth gauge app which is accurate up to 20ft. There's going to be a water temperature app as well. So if you're, freshwater or in the sea or in swim pools, it will give you an idea of what the water temperature is and the colors. The colors actually do look quite nice on these. On the whole range of Apple products issue actually. But on the watches we've got jet Black now, rose gold and the silver. The Apple Watch ten starts at $399 or $499 for the cellular version, and you'll be able to preorder today, tonight as a straight off event. And they'll be available. Everything becomes available on Friday the 20th of September, so the only difference between the watches and the phones is that the watches and AirPods you can preorder right now, the phones you can't preorder until this coming Friday. Join me on Friday because I will be doing a preorder video. But everything will be going to be delivered on the 20th. So onto the watch ultra. As I said, there were rumors and stories that we might be getting a watch out for three. They didn't come to anything, but there's a beautiful new satin black finish on the Watch Ultra two now with some custom blasting process I've used, and you can now get that alongside the natural titanium finish that you had on the watch before. It was also in that same black finish, a titanium Milanese loop for Apple Watch Ultra, and it features this thing called a dual button parachute buckle. I'll try and put something on the screen for you, but it's just two. It actually did look pretty cool. I'd really love to get myself a Watch Ultra, but I just don't know if I can necessarily justify the $800 they cost. They're still a $799, and they have also done another version of Apple Watch Ultra with amaze as well. And I was supposed to drop the H there. Our friend told me the sound, it's which has got exclusive buckles, bands and a watch face watch face. And equally, there's some apps that are coming to watch ultra as well. There's a vitals app, which is key for overnight overnight health metrics and the new tides app as well for water activity tracking. So actually, what she's done is like, no, see, no new ultra three. It's kind of a refresh. Now on to kind of the fairly interesting part of the whole event was AirPods. Before talking about AirPods, I just want to well know let's come with the AirPods with now. Actually, let's carry on with AirPods. I've got something I was going to say, but it came with AirPods for now. So they are, they said, a completely new range of AirPods, and to a degree that's true. We've got AirPods for they are two variations of AirPods 40, so you've got the $129 version of AirPods four, which is only chargeable via usb-C. So I was going to look at second voice isolation, personalized spatial audio with dynamic tracking, adaptive EQ, an event system for pressure equalization. They look for action different. They're supposed to be the most comfortable ever. And I think the case for that one is the smallest case they've ever made as well. And then you've got the next version up with the AirPods four, which costs $179, and they you can charge via usb-C or fast wireless charging. And they have a few extra features. They've got ANC, adaptive Audio and transparency mode and conversation awareness. Both of these two. Again, I've had to do my fact checking fairly quickly, so do sort of bear with me a little bit. I'll try to be as accurate as possible for you. Both have the H2 chip. Apparently these models now have a far better frequency range, better bass, and better highs, and meant to be the most comfortable ever as well. And certainly the 179 pounds or the mid price or the higher priced of the two AirPods four comes with, find my as well as a speaker in case that's got far my there as well. So there the changes to AirPods four and they said they change entire range AirPods Max. Now if you watch the event, you will have gathered right from the very intro what were involved could not have made it clear. By the way, not these necessarily the kind of music I would normally listen to, but that track they use on the very opening sequence I loved. And then to go back and find out what that was. But yeah, so they said they kind of headlined by saying that they changed the entire range of, of AirPods, which technically they have. So AirPods Max, it was the would they would they wouldn't they would they wouldn't they. They're still $500. And they've got pro-level active noise cancellation, transparency mode, personal spatial audio, dynamic tracking, which is going to be coming with an update to iOS 18. But they still got the H1 chip. So really the only difference to AirPods Max was it. It now comes with a, new color. So you're available in blue, purple, midnight, starlight and orange. And it's got usb-C on it. So looking at what I was thinking of getting for the channel, yeah, I can't justify I really can't justify spending $500 on another pair of AirPods Max when I've got a pair of AirPods Max here that are virtually brand new, that I'm using an awful lot and love to pieces. But this, if it's still got the H1 chip in it, that was a kick for me. It still had the H1 chip in it. They haven't for some reason decided to bring it up to the standard. The H2 chip the AirPods four was got. I don't know why. So it really is. It's just a case of usb-C and a couple of extra colors. That's all you get? Now is time to talk, of course, about the meat in this particular sandwich. The phones. If, like me, you've just watched the Apple event and I'm pretty sure you are as pumped and as excited as I am, but I'd love to, so let me know in the comments. In fact, what is it that excites you the most and what are you most looking forward to getting your hands on? But of course, buying the new iPhone and the other cases, that's only part of the deal. That ultramarine actually did look really, really nice. Storage still starts at 128 gigs, which is criminal in 2024. I know that on my phone you watch a video from a couple of weeks ago. I got the 256. I have got plenty of headroom on that storage level. I think 128, you'd be looking over your shoulder all the time worrying about storage. It just seems criminal that they decided to keep that storage starting point. There was talk they were going to increase the price of the phones by $100 or so, and do the old trick that they did last year of making the base storage. 256 sadly not. They still start at 128. It goes up to 2000 nits of max brightness in peak outdoors conditions. The screens are the same sizes as before 6.1 and 6.7 for the 216 bit phones at 16 and 16. Plus, it gets the action button now, which of course I had on my 15 Pro max last year. The action button is coming to the entire range now, as is the camera control now. I suppose now is as good a time as any to didn't you go into the camera control? We were always going to call the capture button and it sits in a very comfortable position. It sits exactly where you'd want it down the bottom third of the phone there. So it's very, very easy to use. I don't know the camera's going to pick that up or not. It's it's a very comfortable place for it to use and it's very simple to use. By all accounts, it's one press will open the camera app up, and then you'll be able to access zoom in some other capabilities through there with some screen overlays. I'll go into a bit more with the the Pro phone because even more features available with it. On on the Pro phone, there's something called visual intelligence, which means that now and I think this is similar to what Google have been doing and Samsung have been doing, whereby you can point your camera at various things. They highlighted going down the street, looking at a restaurant or looking at a post of a gig, and you can pull up for the post the gig, for instance, you'll put the date into your calendar or with the restaurant. It'll pull up the restaurant's website prices, you might bookings. I can see that being kind of useful. And this I wrote early stuff if you don't follow me. I also write on medium and I wrote slowly there today. So I think the difference with, again, you know, I don't make a big beef between Android users and Apple iPhone users. I just happen to use iPhone, that's all. But there was. I think there is a difference between the way Android users tend to use their phones, and why iPhone users use their phones. And with any luck, Apple are going about it in a mature way, giving us a kind of air we want. Now, you could say it's still miles behind what Google and Samsung are doing, but equally, the features that we had, there are actually features that I could see myself using in kind of a real world situation. I'd much prefer to have less AI, but I rather I actually want to use this new term fusion camera, which just means they're bringing different features together on the cameras. As far as I can make out, you got a 48 megapixel main camera and then a 12 megapixel telephoto and ultra wide camera as well. There's a 18 chip, which is 30% faster than the A16 chip they quoted against, and they really did push on about the gaming experience again. I don't know how many of you game I don't I never have been a gamer, but I pushing on about the raytracing and it's the best experience yet this this E18 chip and approach it being the best ever for gaming. There's an improved thermal substructure. I didn't go into too much detail with it, but they're saying that this substructure they've got along with very efficient iOS 18 and the 18 chip should give a big improvement to battery life. And if you watch on my recent videos, I'll probably put a link to that, a video of mine at the end talking about the experience I had with a little bit of a problem with battery life. They're saying that this should hopefully improve, but the cameras are, as we know, you can be vertically aligned. So they combined to take spatial photos. They're obviously trying to drive up a future of Vision Pro. And they did mention that in the video as well, that you can now take your photos and videos ready for for Spatial and Vision Pro and prices still remain unchanged at 799 or 899. And again, as I mentioned, you can preorder those this coming Thursday, Friday as of recording this video. And they'll be available to land in your homes come the 20th of September, which is a week this Friday. So on to the big boy, the Pro and Pro Max, 16 Pro and 16 Pro Max, which is what I'm going to be ordering. They are fractionally bigger. 6.3 and 6.9in for the displays on these, but they actually are a very similar size indeed. I just reached for my phone there you can see the six I mean it is virtually nothing cleaning the the larger screen size comes around because of much thinner bezels. The thinnest bezels has ever been on, on an Apple device and colors. You got the same as before with with natural white or black titanium. That is what looks to be now. We've seen the actual cards. Really lovely desert titanium, and that is going to be the color I'm getting. I'd love to know what color you're going to go for. We weren't sure with the renders, but it actually looks a lovely color and there's some very subtle colorways I've added to it as well. With the camera glass on the back, it looks lovely. I'm not normally a color person for phone. The last one I have was the white titanium. I really love kind of subtle colors, but I think also look good on the channel, if I'm being honest with you. So I will definitely be going for that desert Titanium. It's got the 18 Pro chip in it. It's a second gen three nanometer architecture on that. And again, it's got this fusion 48 megapixel camera with a refresh camera interface. And it's got a second generation quad pixel sensor. There's might be zero lag when you're shooting 48 megapixel for Raw or if I if I think it's pronounced So again they're pushing this camera as hard as I can to take it towards being a pro camera range. And they did show some lovely photographs on it always makes me smile when they show these photographs and these events. I am assuming it's probably a very skilled photographer, and I'm sure those shots are taken in the perfect lighting conditions that when you're out and about, you generally wouldn't get. But that said, I have been absolutely delighted with the cameras that I've got on this phone. So on the next iteration, I'm certainly gonna be playing with, some of the photo styles, at least mentioning in just a moment there's a 48 megapixel ultra wide camera for the first time. And these stars, now that they're trying to, you can adapt colors and shadows in real time. They said it was always a black and white option in the photos styles as well photographic styles now as well. And they described it as live professional color grading. And that's something I certainly will be playing. I've got some great ideas what I want to do to test the camera and the phone in general, but I just need a little bit of I need a bit more thought, but I've got some some good ideas, mainly leaving the studio and going somewhere quite a long way away if I get my way will be doing that, so maybe drop a sub if you like. The the little teaser that I'm leaving you there, I've got some nice ideas in mind. You can now shoot 4K in one £0.20 in HDR and it's got intelligent audio treatment. They will be beginning at the end of the event to transition very heavily towards talking about, the audio, which comes into play very heavily with video, and I'll get to that in just one moment. The camera control, which is a dedicated flush sapphire crystal button with haptic feedback. So we'll be getting haptic feedback out of it. And it is dedicated to camera app functions. We press it once to open the camera up. Then you can press it again just to take a pic. A light press you can use for framing. So it can zoom you want, or which lens flexion you want to use. And then if you press lightly twice, you can see some controls to slide for one. So you can pick up exposure depth of field and other things like that all through giving a light. Second press and the camera controls can be updated later this year with exposure as well on a half price. It's got visual intelligence, of course, on the Pro Max as it did on the Pro. And I mentioned about this big push on audio. They showed a situation they were doing almost like a mini film set, and they had an idea of doing a cinematic mix. Now they showed somebody talking on the phone as well and cutting out wind noise. Just on a general phone call, which is, I know, something that Google can do on their phone. So that's coming to iPhone as well, which I'm really happy about. That sounds like it's gonna be a big, useful push, but also when you're recording video, if you are using the audio from your iPhone, then you've got these things such as, there's a, in frame mix or spatial audio mix or cinematic mix. So if you've got somebody that you want to pick up, so you're looking at characters on camera, but you want to also pick up the ambient noise behind, you can use the cinematic mix, which will pick up more of an ambient frame. If you want the in frame mix, you would just use that to pick up the voices directly in front of the camera. So although there weren't any major different changes so video codecs or video capabilities, but to be honest, I don't know how much better it can get in progress. And that was a massive jump last year. It's a smaller jump this year, but I think they're trying to work more on the audio quality. They carried through the push on audio to voice Memos as well, very heavily leaning into the creative side of musicians who I know genuinely. I used to mix with quite a lot musicians, and they do use voice notes an awful lot. So an idea will come to them and they'll just grab it, put a voice note down, a melody or a line they want to use. But now you can actually do overlays on it as well. So it's a very niche use point. But it's there. So there's a big push on audio with the Pro phones. The Pro phone still starts at 128 gigs, which again, for reasons I stayed before I find unbelievable. So that's kind of the takeaways, the karaoke points of of glow time that we've just watched. Clearly, there's more to unpack as things go along, but it has been a moderately quiet upgrade this year. I wouldn't say that I'm disappointed. I definitely will be getting the 16 Pro Max on. I think I asked you earlier on today on a video that I put out about which of the AirPods four would you like to get? And the big push was on the cheaper version of the AirPods four, so I'll definitely be picking those up. There's no I can't justify getting watch out for that purely because I want one. And $800. That's a big ask. So I think and was no iPad mini, there was no Apple TV I felt was going to be a something one last thing, an extra bit of sparkle at the end of this event. And it wasn't, which kind of left it feeling a bit flat for me. There's no Apple TV, you know, iPad mini, no Macs. I assume they're all coming in another event, maybe in October. They had one on Halloween last year, didn't they? So we're assuming we're getting another one probably later this year with other goodies in it. But today there was nothing that really stood out in spark for me. Everything's an iteration. It's certainly not a supercycle year. And I said that in a video that I made a video earlier today. So I'm sure I love using it. The 15 Pro Max has been a great phone this year, and I'm sure enjoy the improvements to photographic styles and any kind of improvements to audio. Not that I use audio natively from the iPhone an awful lot, but I will enjoy the overall improvements. I'm sure the camera button I reckon, because I take so many photos with my phone that will come in useful if it makes choosing between, exposures and focal lengths and lenses that much quicker, that can only be a good thing, and I suppose it will be even quicker to be able to grab lunch and go for a photo. That way, rather than having to press the icon on the home screen or to use the action button. I'm guessing it will, and it's going to be muscle memory. Is it going to take some time to get used to it? But I'd love for you to tell me now what you thought of the event. Did anything particularly catch your eye? Is it anything I've missed?
