The show explores issues of shame, family, secrets, falsehoods, and the mob's joy in assigning blame. Sacha Baron Cohen portrays Catherine Ravenscroft's devoted husband, while Kodi Smit-McPhee plays her son, who appears to despise her. In her portrayal of the journalist, Cate stated that she had attempted to control the "power of judgment," pointing out that "almost as soon as you meet her and you know nothing about her you hear what other people say about her." It was difficult to withhold too much information. She appeared to be a glass of water that the audience and other actors projected into.
