CAPABILITIES. FIRE CREWS IN NEVADA AND SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA ARE WORKING TO SLOW THE GROWTH OF WILDFIRES, AND THE WEATHER CONDITIONS ARE PLAYING A MAJOR FACTOR TODAY. DOZENS OF HOMES HAVE BEEN DESTROYED IN THE BRIDGE FIRE. IT'S BURNING THROUGH LOS ANGELES AND SAN BERNARDINO COUNTIES. IT'S BURNED MORE THAN 49,000 ACRES. THE FIRE HAS REACHED THE MOUNTAIN HIGH RESORT IN WRIGHTWOOD. THE BASE FACILITIES ARE INTACT. WE HAVE APPROXIMATELY 20 HOMES DESTROYED IN THE MOUNT BALDY AREA. WE ALSO HAVE 13 HOMES DESTROYED IN THE WRIGHTWOOD AREA, AND WE'VE LOST SIX CABINS TO FIRE THAT WERE IN THE WILDERNESS AREA. MULTIPLE EVACUATION ORDERS AND WARNINGS ARE IN EFFECT IN BOTH COUNTIES. THE AIRPORT FIRE BURNING IN TRABUCO TRABUCO CANYON HAS BURNED NEARLY 23,000 ACRES. IT'S THREATENING MORE THAN 10,000 BUILDINGS AND HOMES IN ORANGE AND RIVERSIDE COUNTIES. YOU CAN SEE THE SMOKE IS PUTTING UP IN JUST A SMALL SECTION OF THE FIRE. SEVEN PEOPLE HAVE BEEN HURT. THE LION FIRE HAS BURNED MORE THAN 34,000 ACRES. IT'S BURNING IN SAN BERNARDINO COUNTY. IT IS 14% CONTAINED, BUT IT'S PUTTING UP A LOT OF SMOKE. WE TOOK THIS TIME LAPSE VIDEO ABOUT 230 THIS AFTERNOON. A MAN IS FACING ARSON CHARGES IN CONNECTION WITH STARTING THIS FIRE. NOW, THESE FIRES HAVE GROWN A LOT IN JUST THE PAST FEW DAYS. METEOROLOGIST HEATHER WALDMAN JOINING US WITH MORE DETAILS ON THAT. HEATHER, HOW ACTIVE ARE THE FIRES THIS AFTERNOON? WELL, YOU CAN SEE HERE FROM THE SATELLITE IMAGE THAT THE BRIDGE FIRE PUTTING UP THE MOST SMOKE. THIS AFTERNOON, INDICATING THAT IT MAY BE BURNING THE HOTTEST AND THE MOST ACTIVELY HERE OVER THE LAST SEVERAL HOURS. BUT REALLY, IT'S JUST IN THE LAST SEVERAL DAYS OF HEAT AND WIND COMING FROM THE WRONG DIRECTION AND JUST THE VERY DRY AIR ASSOCIATED WITH THAT THAT'S ALLOWED THESE FIRES TO GROW SO MUCH. THERE ARE SOME AREAS WHERE TEMPERATURES ARE COMING DOWN, HUMIDITIES ARE COMING UP JUST A LITTLE BIT. BUT LET'S START WITH THE BRIDGE FIRE. AGAIN. THIS HAS SO FAR BEEN THE MOST ACTIVE AND APPARENTLY THE MOST DESTRUCTIVE SO FAR, THREATENING THE COMMUNITIES OF BIG PINES. AND THERE'S THE COMMUNITY OF WRIGHTWOOD. YOU SEE THERE ALONG HIGHWAY TWO. BIGGEST CONCERN FOR TODAY IS THE SOUTHEASTERN PERIMETER OF THE FIRE. THAT'S WHERE WINDS ARE COMING FROM THE NORTHWEST TO THE SOUTHEAST. AND OBVIOUSLY YOU SEE HERE LOTS OF POPULATED AREAS DOWN IN THE VALLEY BELOW. HERE'S A LOOK AT THE AIRPORT FIRE GROWING CLOSER TO LAKE ELSINORE OVER THE LAST 24 HOURS. BUT HERE IS WHERE HUMIDITY LEVELS ARE STARTING TO COME UP. THAT'S A GOOD THING FOR FIREFIGHTERS. IT MEANS THE FIRE ACTIVITY MAY BE AT LEAST A LITTLE BIT SUPPRESSED. BUT WHAT'S IMPRESSIVE WITH THESE FIRES IS TY AND LISA JUST MENTIONED JUST HOW MUCH SMOKE THEY HAVE PUT UP. THIS IS ONE OF OUR SMOKE MODELS SHOWING WHERE THAT SMOKE IS GETTING CARRIED IN THE UPPER LEVELS OF THE ATMOSPHERE, ALL THE WAY ACROSS THE FOUR CORNERS, AND THEN SEVERAL LARGE FIRES ACROSS OREGON AND SOUTHERN IDAHO, COMBINING TO SEND A LOT OF SMOKE INTO THE NORTHERN PLAINS AS WELL. BACK TO YOU. YEAH, THAT MODEL REALLY SHOWS YOU JUST HOW THAT SMOKE AFFECTS. SO MANY PEOPLE ACROSS THE COUNTRY. THE DAVIS FIRE IS BURNING SOUTH OF RENO, NEAR THE COMMUNITY OF WASHOE LAKE, AND CREWS SAY IT HAS BURNED 5600 ACRES AND IS 30% CONTAINED. IT STARTED ON SATURDAY AND HAS BURNED THROUGH AT LEAST A DOZEN STRUCTURES SO FAR, BUT THEY DO EXPECT THE WESTERN SIDE OF THE FIRE TO CONTINUE TO SPREAD TODAY, WITH A RISK OF SPOTTING HEATHERS. COMING BACK NOW TO TALK MORE ABOUT HOW THE WIND IS IMPACTING THESE FIRES. YEAH, AND THESE WINDS REALLY ARE GOING TO BE STRONG ON THE EAST SIDE OF THE SIERRA. AND REALLY ACROSS THE ENTIRE GREAT BASIN. THE AREA YOU SEE SHADED IN RED, THAT'S A RED FLAG WARNING, WHICH THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE HAS TAGGED AS A PARTICULARLY DANGEROUS SITUATION, MOSTLY BECAUSE OF JUST HOW STRONG THE WINDS ARE GOING TO BE SUSTAINED AT 40 TO 50MPH, WITH SOME GUSTS POSSIBLY CLOSER TO 60MPH. HERE'S THE LATEST FIRE PERIMETER FOR THE DAVIS FIRE. THIS AREA AROUND WASHOE CITY AND UP TOWARDS THE LAKE. THAT IS WHERE FIRE CREWS HAVE GOOD CONTAINMENT LINES SET UP. IT'S THE WESTERN SIDE OF THE FIRE WHERE YOU SEE HERE THE RIDGES AND A MUCH MORE HEAVILY POPULATED AREA. THAT'S THE BIGGER AREA OF CONCERN AS THOSE WINDS PICK UP THIS EVENING, FUTURECAST SHOWING THOSE WINDS GUSTING PRETTY CONSISTENTLY OVER THE NEXT COUPLE OF HOURS, BETWEEN 40 AND 60MPH.
