Oklahoma State Cowboys - 2022 College Football Season Preview & Predictions

Intro straight out of south carolina [Music] sports channel 4 sports fans by sports fan it's your man coach i hey man it's almost that time we about 48 days away from the college football season and it's time to start talking season previews today's preview is gonna be oklahoma state we got a returning guest on the show his name's aaron he's a legacy everybody in the family with oklahoma state as well as he did he brought some good knowledge the first time so we figured we'd bring her back on what's going on aaron what's up man thanks for having me hey man i'm glad you come back on this show man and uh talk some uh college football i'm pretty sure you're just as anxious as i am to get to get the season started i'm nations for this heat to go away man that uh that could happen i might be able to wait but it'd be nice to have uh some college football that's right i love how we're starting to spread it out a little bit you got almost got every night you know yeah yeah yeah yeah and the heat i don't know i don't know if you're gonna get your wish with that heat man because august typically is the hottest month man it's been crazy that's supposed to be 109 tomorrow so that's crazy man but yeah i'm i'm inside for a reason yeah that's Oklahoma State Cowboys Returning Starters (Transfer Portal) right man we'll go ahead and jump into it man you can go ahead tell us um you know everybody knows about um you know you guys lost in the big 12 championship last year to baylor had a good season nonetheless uh let's talk about some of those key starters uh that you you're missing and some that are returning of course everybody knows about spencer sanders returning but talk about some of those people uh like jalen warren and others that you're missing this year yeah i mean you know you lost a martin uh you've got a lot of guys gone uh especially on defense you lost seven i think seven out of the top eight uh returning tacklers are gone uh you know your defensive coordinator bounced and took took one of your best to finish with him um so you know a lot of questions there man starting uh starting starting at a blank spot in terms of you know what to expect i guess you know a lot of guys coming back they've got they've got a pretty good uh you know returning front on defense i think most of the questions probably at linebacker yeah normally i would be concerned about the offensive line they've had issues there the last couple of years especially with death keeping guys at the same position um you know i think they're going to be a lot better um in that situation this year you got some guys settled you're moving guys around a little bit but i think you're going to have guys where they where they need to be got a couple got a couple of transfer portal players one uh i think the collier kid from usc and uh i think his name is brooks from from vanderbilt um you know i don't know where those guys will end up on the depth chart you know that remains to be seen but at least we'll provide some quality depth that you know worst case scenario there um get some protection for spencer sanders we had a lot of difficulty with that last couple years and and you got to protect sanders this year because you know you lost you know one of the biggest losses in my opinion is is the backup shane ellingworth uh transferred to nevada yeah so they actually asked me i think they asked gundy about that you know at media days or whatever about whether he was worried about not getting a quarterback in the transfer report or not yeah i i didn't see his response i didn't watch any of the media day stuff but you know the number two guys this kid is gonna be uh you know he hadn't really played uh the number three guys uh garrett rangel the freshman from texas um so you know gotta keep gotta keep your quarterback safe yeah yeah as far as what you were saying about defensive coordinator leave i mean you did get to replace him with uh derek mason who i actually think is a pretty good defensive coordinator but he does have a challenge like you said y'all lost like four key db's uh malcolm rodriguez the linebacker but yeah i mean not a huge huge loss for the defense right losing losing rodriguez he was an amazing player i i mean the guy just the guy did everything he was a hard soul of that team but you know you got jabar muhammad corner you got jason taylor at safety those are you know thomas harper those are guys that are coming back um corey black probably the other corner um in terms of linebacker man that's that's going to be a question man there's some guys coming back uh you know mason cobb um you got benson i i don't know i i mean it's gonna be interesting to see how that works out and the way oklahoma state has played defense in the past you got guys that kind of go from that linebacker spot to that it's not really a nickel package um but you know on the defensive line they're in really good shape yeah colin oliver you know the freshman coming back brandon evers uh tyler lacy has been great um you know uh brock martin um you've got trace ford right so i think trace ford would have had he not been injured would have been the best defender um in the big 12. i mean he was that good you know he's under both knees at this point it's gonna be interesting to see you know how he comes back and there's gonna be a lot of it's gonna be it's gonna be tough for posing offensive lines uh to handle the uh of the past rush of oklahoma state i think that the front seven is gonna be gonna be pretty good um you know i don't worry too much about the defense i know there's a new coordinator but um you know offensively you got to find a running back uh the tight end or the cowboy back spot for oklahoma state that's it's kind of a hybrid position there there's you know you're going to have to find somebody that's that's gonna play that position well um takes a lot of pressure off of the quarterback um you know it's it gets you sparingly at times but then depending on the situations um you know it's it's a position that they need to make sure still with somebody that can uh they can catch the football obviously um somebody that can take a threat i mean in terms of wide receiver i mean they're you know they're loaded again they're always i was about to say okay i always got good wire receivers though yeah i mean and and i'll be honest with you the guy that you know i mean look we can start with running back we should probably talk about that i mean uh dominic richardson's the guy with experience right that comes back um jayden nixon looked pretty good when he's when he's played but there's not a lot there but you got a kid ollie gordon big kid i think he's 6'4 230 coming out from tulsa um you know they're they're gonna they're gonna be all right in that position i'm not uh you know not too concerned about that um the receiver jayden bray you know had a great year i think that guy's gonna be probably the the go-to guy uh at fever um uh we got braden johnson brendan presley obviously who is going to be the guy you know everybody i think everybody knows him how you know exciting i guess he had been he was he's you know in the return spot as well but you know i keep saying this and that i may sound like an idiot i may look like an idiot but in my opinion his little brother's gonna come in and play quick um the uh the chevron kid from tulsa yeah well the kids will both be difference makers probably from day one but uh you know braylon presley the freshman from from jinx uh or i'm sorry from uh from bixby you know his brother's there i think he's gonna make an instant difference i don't know how you keep him uh off the field the kid's town that he's you know he's five seven and probably 155 pounds so uh you know that's there's always an issue there but i think he'll be able to step in and get some time he's one of those guys you got to get the ball yeah well the good thing is man you guys aren't the only people the only team that lost some your major contenders lost people as well you know you guys i think returned 10 starters oklahoma returns 10 starters texas is 13. i think baylor returns the most of the contenders i should say they were going to be the team to be i really think i i think oklahoma state's right there i mean it's hard to discount oh you right because they're ou and but so many new moving parts you got a new quarterback you've got a new coach there i mean there's there's a lot going on there um the rest of the big 12. man i it's with the transfer portal and all the stuff that's going on man i feel like it's kind of hard to uh nail down everybody if you're not on top of it you know if you're not in the scene there you don't know what's going on day to day who's in and who's out things change pretty fast i mean look at look at what changed from oh use perspective on how many guys left and they lost that's right i mean that's what i was alluding to is like so even the losses that you guys like you say on defense but some people lost a lot on offense that you have to face so i agree and everybody everybody's losing guys like that now and everybody's getting guys and it's more you know it's changing the game i think it turns it comes down to like you know how can you pick up a guy in the you know in the transfer portal now is is more important maybe than than recruiting you may have an immediate need yeah um and there's and there's talent right now there's a talented kid that's somewhere that he knows he's talented he knows he can he can get paid he can go somewhere where he can be recognized so you can go out and get that guy so you know i think that changes the dynamic for sure of sports yeah for sure for oklahoma state competing in the big 12 i think they'll compete um you know for the conference championship will they win it i don't know because the one question i have and this ain't going to be the same question everybody else has um the spencer sanders yeah can you keep him up all right that's that's my thing you know i mean he's the freak well i mean it can he can he get it done yeah i mean he's the preseason you know all big 12 quarterback but he's a good quarterback but he throws a lot of interceptions man she makes mistakes and he tries to force it and you gotta at some point man now's the time right you you have to step up and say man i can play i'm not gonna make these same mistakes that i made yeah and the difference between them uh you know winning the big 12 championship and not is going to be i think truly come down to spencer yeah something gundy said the media days actually kind of i think kind of alluded to some of his turnover problems is somebody asked him if you guys were pretty we're going to you know keep going up tempo and speed up a little bit more he said at times he felt like last year because you had a lot of young wide receivers that you kind of confuse yourself sometimes and and confusion can lead to interceptions whether it's the quarterback's fault or the receiver's fault i'm not saying it's you know all on spencer sanders or not i'm just saying that could kind of uh go into some of that but with that said man let's go ahead and jump in the Oklahoma State Cowboys Football Schedule Preview & Predictions schedule man and uh let's see what you think about you know the schedule coming down the pipe man the first game out the blocks in central michigan i don't think yeah i think there's a lot there i think that's a you know a good win well i'll tell you what i don't know if mike gundy has that game circled uh but i do uh you know i mean they're going to win that game don't get me wrong um but i think they're going to make sure that it's not in question i don't know if you remember what happened last time they played um i was actually in colorado springs i was on vacation and i thought the game was over and 20 minutes later that we lost and i was like what you know the untimed down i don't know if you're familiar with that they got enough time down ended up returning it for a touchdown and um yeah so i think i mean that's that's a win but i think that's a game that they're gonna they're gonna make sure is in hand yeah it is on a thursday it's on september 1st thursday night at seven o'clock a little bit up to thursday yeah so you know i know the group of five a lot of times they're used to playing on thursdays whereas majority of the power fives aren't used to that short week so you could be right but i i i think you guys will handle that then you move on to arizona state i'm not big on arizona state i actually don't think this would be a hard game for you guys but um this is that's totally what i think uh what do you think you got them at home though yeah i mean i think that's about the game of conversation win pretty easily yeah and they've gotten though coming up after that you got arkansas playing bluff another win and then you got then you've got an open date which is definitely needed in front of the baylor bears oh yeah i mean that's that's a week to get healthy you've got three weeks of you know hey we're getting getting our stuff together right and that's gonna be the biggest test of the season um you get them at home so that's that's important well you guys play um at waco it's that way that way yeah oh yeah oh it is that way what you got you guys are you guys are three and three in the last six versus bayless so it's kind of like up in the air and it isn't a home field advantage type you know thing either it's like you've lost some at home won some at home and vice versa for baylor so i actually think this will be a big 12 championship program man that's gonna be a tough game that's a toss up going to baylor makes a big difference oklahoma state has a pretty good home field advantage yeah so then you come back home to play texas tech um texas tech i think you guys should win this game i think like all big 12 teams uh have some offense here and there i don't think they'll have enough in the tank unless you you know we get back to the old spencer sanders where he's throwing a lot of you know picks at the wrong time you know i mean right well yeah that i mean that obviously we've seen that too many times i it doesn't happen honestly in those games it doesn't really matter that's what it's a pressure situation you got to make a play sometimes he forces it but yeah i don't think they'll have a problem with texas tech at tcu man i don't even know what's going on with that program either man it's like i don't have a beat on them at all i i talked to a buddy not long ago that's an alum and he's well a lot of people not happy with what's going on up there so yeah see that's why i think you guys will win because like i said it's not that they don't have talent but they just lost zach evans you know what i'm saying and then that's a that's a huge part of their offense and then you guys will have good offense even though it's at tcu i still think you guys come out with a win on that one yeah yeah i think you're right so then you play texas in stillwater yeah i think that's homecoming y'all got texas for homes i gotta mention that's the you know world's greatest homecoming yeah familiar with oklahoma state's homecoming but it's uh it's a big deal wow you got texas for the homecoming i did not know that man texas is back you think so i mean no no i mean listen i think they have one of the best running backs in all of college football and uh i think they have a good wide receiver i forget what his name but i think he's all big 12 worthy but outside of that we don't really know what queen eures is going to bring to the table and that's where it kind of ends for me you know me yeah i mean look a lot of teams in the big 12 can win any game on any given day i mean that's why you play etc you know i might maybe say that in the sec when alabama was playing vanderbilt at home or something but you know uh i mean kansas beat texas last year so you're gonna i i when they prove it to me then i'll believe it um you know they were back until they played arkansas last year in arkansas uh you know put them back in their place so we'll see for texas texas to actually be back quinn yours is gonna be have to be what everybody thinks he is he can't be mediocre because i don't think that gets it done yeah i mean yeah they're gonna have to they're gonna have to to stop people and make plays uh i mean they've got we'll see but i mean i i think oklahoma state will win that game but yeah uh they've lost plenty games they shouldn't so you guys are actually four and two against texas in the last six like six tries so i mean you own yeah record against texas has been prepared and it's at home so after that you move on to kansas state who kansas state is one of the teams who actually returned uh i think onto like 15 players or something then they got deuce vaughn i think i may have given y'all a half when i did my season win totals for this one just because it's at kansas state even though like i say i think you guys uh you guys are four and two against kansas state in the last six but i think they'll be better than some people imagine i think kansas state's a decent team yeah they don't have a lot of playmakers they're not they're not going to be an exciting team that's it they're not going to put up a bunch of points but they're just one of those teams they kind of grind out let's try to stay in the game i i think it'll be a decent game but i think oklahoma will stay right yeah of course you know i'm going to tell you i'm biased i'm going to say they're going to win every single game until they lose the game i mean national champions yeah yeah yeah yeah but you follow that up so it's like the kansas two-step so you do at kansas state then you go at kansas that's you know hey look everyone says i got a buddy he just works in sports here he's he said like at kansas is like one of the hardest places to play early game of kansas nobody cares yeah that's the problem you know you don't practice hard for kansas you're like man we got a week off exactly and you get there you show up and there's nobody in the stands yeah you know what we'll be fine and then you know they sneak up and make it a game but yeah i i don't think anybody needs to worry about kansas anytime soon they'll they might be somebody they shouldn't but they're also going to probably win three or four games yeah so then you follow that up with iowa state at home i think iowa state's a decent team i think you guys have ultimately have too much you know for them again like you say any given saturday we know that's why you play the game but i think you guys are a better team than iowa state at this point unless they show something different yeah i mean i think oklahoma state's a better team i don't worry too much about that game um kind of they've got they've got some more play makers than kansas state i think they're better talent wise across the board almost the game you got to go to oklahoma you guys beat oklahoma last year for the first time in the last six tries but i think what's going gonna help is they lost a lot a lot of key stuff not just a lot like i think dylan gabriel's good but i don't think he's i don't know he hasn't been really like uh like we thought he was gonna be after he like had he had a good season at ucf he kind of can go 80 yards and then he'll get in the red zone and kind of do something i'm not going to question a transfer quarterback to ou they've done okay you know or or a freshman or whatever um i hate them they i really really hate them at norman is tough that's what i was gonna if you look bedlam in stillwater traditionally pretty close yeah um batman norman doesn't end up that way yeah i think i gave you a half on this game just because that game is that game is a toss up yeah that's what i thought i actually i mean i think oklahoma state probably has a better team okay uh i it's just because there's so many questions that oh you i mean maybe and maybe i just don't know what they've gotten in place to feel i try to keep up you know with all the teams in the conference especially ou but you know i mean they have had they've been in total chaos yeah um a lot of moving pieces a lot of moving pieces things did not go as planned um down in norman and they've rallied around rent rentables and brit minerals the one thing i did see on media he he said some pretty good things about the quarterback and about he said i mean it's a high praise he said uh i think he called him a galvanizer of men okay something like that so i mean that's something you want to hear words you want to hear about your quarterback yeah definitely so i think it's a toss-up you know i'm saying because like you said the history of the game plus playing at norman is always hard regardless uh you know for who the opponent is and then you guys finish up uh with west virginia [Music] west jt daniels transfer from georgia if jt can stay healthy he'll change you know he'll and he'll make them better the question is can he stay healthy and this is the last game of the season so uh i think they could but that's a long trip from from from west virginia to stillwater yeah i mean west virginia is another one of those teams man they they're inconsistent they can show up what they've got lights out you know that's the thing you know i mean yeah i mean you gotta play the games and again i think oklahoma state's in good shape if you come and play your game you don't make a bunch of mistakes yeah you can't make mistakes and be oh you or texas or baylor or you know any you know top half of the of the conference teams you know they come out and play and you make a couple mistakes and and you know you get in trouble yeah uh you know one of the good one of the benefits i think that they do have is that they've got they can play from behind okay i think they've shown that they they're pretty good at playing from behind they play that you know they can hurry up um and move the football they're pretty successful with that in fact i hate it when they slow down but sometimes you know you got to yeah um but yeah there's some there's some spots to fill man and i think you'll find out pretty fast whether those spots are filled like with most teams i mean i think you know you get three weeks in yeah you can see you can see where the strengths and weaknesses are and where there's where there's trouble but again sanders doesn't stay healthy oakland state some big trouble that's true i Can Mike Gundy win the Big 12 definitely agree with that but if spencer sanders does stay healthy and play like we think he can the question is of course the looming question is can gundy get it done can he get over the hum now i don't even talk about a national championship i'm talking about a big 12 championship you know what i'm saying yeah well you got to win that first um yeah i mean i think if if he stays healthy and he he doesn't have a game where he just you know just falls off the map and those four interceptions i mean i think i think they'll compete i think they got a good chance yeah i think uh i got it just in my mind currently i in all health you know intact i think i got a rematch of the big 12 championship from last year i got baylor and oklahoma state of course oh you may have something to say about that but i'm always leery about putting uh first year coaches at a new school not necessarily first year coaches but definitely first year head coaches at a new school uh yeah you know it was different with lincoln riley and ryan day they took over programs that they was already the oc i'm talking about when you go to a new school you could be the greatest coach but you got to get the kids to buy in so i think that may play a part in the 2022 season and allow like i say a rematch between baylor and Oklahoma State Cowboys Vegas Win Totals & Predictions okie state so man give me your prediction on the season realistic even if you believe it's 12-0 i mean i i honestly think that they're gonna win the national championship um i mean i just that's just the way i do until i mean they're gonna lose they'll probably you know there's a reasonable expectation they can lose three games okay i think vegas had y'all man just about anything vegas season win total for y'all was eight and a half when i went through the schedule i gave y'all ten and a half with the yeah i like what the stat guy did better because i think he had us he had y'all he might have one game yeah yeah yeah yeah in the playoffs yeah he does he he has you all as the fourth playoff team this year uh i had the 10 and a half with a half like i said toss up at ou toss up against baylor and uh i actually had y'all at a toss-up against texas because i don't just don't know what to expect from texas i mean they have to they have the talent to do it but can't can they yeah of course they do and look man baylor coaching they got i mean they're they're a good very good spot man um so i wanna you know uh there will be a big 12 team i think that that's that's going to be a contender um for the playoff spots i don't know if it'll be baylor oklahoma state it could be o.u yeah it could be texas but you know prove it to me first that's my thing until i see it i can't it was the same way with me and you know my bulldogs was like i every last year in every decently decent game especially against the bama and the florida i can find a way for us not to win because until you see it it's hard to believe it you know any closing words for debate for the oklahoma state faithful i mean you said the total wins in vegas i think was eight and a half i mean that's for an oklahoma state fan that you know gundy has you know consistently won 10 games i mean i'm betting that over every time even you know regardless of what injuries might or might not happen i mean eight and a half i'll take that i'll take that all day i think they're in good shape i'm excited about the season i may be crying after week week one you know uh you know first first they may they may get blown out by baylor and i may just throw it in who knows uh that's why i love college football it's an emotional roller coaster man emotional roller coaster i think the stat guy says gundy is kind of the equivalent of mark rick out in out west man it's like i know i remember you guys making that comparison and i it's a great i mean good coaches make that a great man great coach that all that stuff but you got to get it done yeah now's the time now's the time definitely man so we'll have a man we'll get you back on for a baylor uh okay state preview and hopefully a bedlam preview as well man i mean hopefully at that point you know health is intact on the team and we're headed because if the health is not intact a lot of teams won't be looking like whatever we preview them as in the summer we definitely appreciate you getting back home man y'all don't forget to
