segment today the latest news and rumors surrounding the Pittsburgh Steelers [Music] welcome into Steelers talk I am your host Jack Sperry and today we have a loaded edition of Steelers news and rumors to cover right here on the show first up I'm going to tell you why I'm not worried about Russell Wilson being the starting quarterback of the Pittsburg Steelers at least not yet and then also there's a crazy trade rumor from ESPN's Mike Tannon bomb saying that the Steelers should trade Russell Wilson and then sign Ryan tanah hill I'll let you guys know my thoughts on that later in today's first up here I'm not really worried about Russell Wilson I know there's a lot of talk about oh Russell Wilson was terrible in his first preseason game oh he's totally washed you know we have to go with Justin Fields now and I understand why people are speaking that way they're frustrated that in five offensive drives the Steelers scored zero points with Russell Wilson under Center but the reason why I'm not worried at least not yet is that I watched the film here I watched the all 22 and I broke it down and I did my charting and I thought given the circumstances that Russell Wilson was put in he actually showed some pretty darn good processing and execution of the concepts that Arthur Smith was giving to him on and in the situations that he was being put in based on my charting he made the right decision with the football nine out of 10 times the only one where I thought he could have done something different was that he was in empty George Pickins was lined up against a linebacker one-on-one in the slot and instead he throws a hitch route to Van Jefferson and it gets broken up by the cornerback if I were Russell Wilson in that in that opportunity and you got George Pickins lined up one-on-one on a linebacker I'm throwing it to him almost 100% % of the time and then out of all 10 throws that he had I thought that he made a good executed play on eight of out of the 10 uh the one play that I thought was the right call but it was inaccurate was that one to George Pickins it was just outside of the white which is not where you want to place the football George came down with it because he's a freak of nature and he's got a 99 overall spectacular catch rating uh in Madden with that with with that type of catch but overall I thought it was a pretty high level of execution from Russ Wilson and he did what the offense wanted him to do the problem was that the offense wasn't staying on schedule what the Steelers want to do they want to get decent yardage on first and second down so that they can get into manageable third down situations so that Russ can uh can execute but what they were doing is that they were getting into third and long situations which have a very low success rate no matter who the quarterback is all right so you look at the problems that the Steelers were going through they gave up three quick pressure sacks and bro Jones really really had a tough time uh you know get it staying in front of Gregory rouso we all know that we we've covered that extensively also they had multiple tackle for losses in the Run game I think this is something that gets glassed over a lot because of the sacks and because Russell Wilson was the quarterback but there was a lot of tackle for loss in the Run game and that needs to be fixed if the Steelers are going to have success and also they had multiple penalties Darnell Washington had a had a holding penalty there was multiple false starts on the Steelers offense with Russell Wilson in there and none of those things are on Russell Wilson right all those things are on things that he can't control but yet it was putting him in these kinds of situations on third Downs all right so he faced six total third Downs in the entire game on six on two of those six he had a quick pressure sack so he had so he had no chance of picking up the first down five of those at least third and long so that's third and seven or longer four of those six was third and very long which is third and 10 or longer okay so he was put in some really bad situations and in the oneth third and manageable situation he was put in he converted a first down on a throw over the middle of the field to Van Jefferson so Russell Wilson showed you put him in a third and manageable situation instead of a super low uh success rate third and very long situation he showed that he can be that game manager quarterback that the Steelers brought him into to be he also completed all four attempts on those third Downs so he was definitely efficient with uh on that final down there and I do expect that this offense is going to be more on schedule moving forward or at least I really hope so I hope those penalties start to go away I hope that the holding penalties stop I hope that the Run game gets going right I really hope that this offense and the surrounding cast can support Russell Wilson because we have to remember why the Steelers brought this guy in in the first place they didn't bring him in to be the star they didn't bring him in to make all these crazy plays that he used to make with the Seattle Seahawks back when he was competing for MVP TR trophies they're bringing him in as a high functioning veteran game manager that protects the football and takes what the defense gives him and that's exactly what his job is guys is to execute the offense I thought he did that pretty darn well on Saturday getting the ball to the open receivers protect the football he did that very well as well getting it to open receivers not throwing it into super tight windows on Third and very long putting the ball In Harm's Way throw the Deep ball when it's there he did that to George Pickins on the one one-on-one opportunity he had the entire night and then win games late and obviously he wasn't playing late in the game and it's a preseason game right and he led the league last year in fourth quarter comebacks and he's one of the most clutch quarterbacks in the history of the game so I absolutely believe Russell Wilson can still do all of these things that the Steelers are asking him to do and when you look at what the Steelers want to win with right this is their winning formula this is what they want to do to win as many games as possible this year they want to dominate on defense they're paying uh more than anybody else in football for that defense that's going to be their main endr they also want to control the ball so you need a quarterback that's not going to turn the ball over not going to throw interceptions Russell Wilson does that you want to wear down opposing defenses with the Run game Naji Harris and Jaylen Warren if they're healthy one of the best running back Duos in the league and then also throw the Deep off of play action which we know Russell Wilson can still do as well and then deliver in the clutch uh which we know Russ can do as well so listen man when it comes to this winning formula I think that Russ's skill set fits better than Justin Fields now Justin is a different type of player right he's somebody that can maybe carry an offense a little bit more but the Steelers feel like their roster is already good enough they just need somebody that's going to be a high functioning game manager in there that can be clutch that can throw the Deep ball when asked to be but the Steelers are not asking Russell Wilson to be the reason why they are winning football games they're just trying to have a quarterback that they're not losing because of like with Kenny picket last year with the accuracies he was dealing with but however on the other hand okay if the offensive line is going to be as bad as it was on Saturday giving up as much quick pressure as they did if brodric Jones is playing and he is awful if Troy Fano gets his chance and he's bad and he's giving up big pressure I think that if this offensive line stinks the best quarterback to play is Justin fields and the reason for that is because he has shown throughout this preseason that he can make those plays when things break down and Russell Wilson at this point in his career is isn't as athletic as he once was can't move around as well as he once did and right now I think Justin Fields absolutely uh can create more off schedule than Russell Wilson so if this offense is going to be forced to play that brand of football I think Justin Fields will be the answer at that point so let me know down there in the comments section who starts more games this trade idea from Mike Danon bomb uh he went on get up this morning on ESPN this is what he had to say about trading Russell Wilson to the Minnesota Vikings a win-win here is to trade Russell Wilson to Minnesota I think Russ is a better quarterback than Sam darnold then he goes on to say Ryan tanah Hill is still a free agent guys and you go back to the two years Ryan tanah Hill spent with Arthur Smith they had an unbelievable two-year run let him come into Pittsburgh and initially back up Justin fields and and maybe you pick up an additional third or fourth round pick after you trade Russell Wilson so this is essentially what the trade would look like for Mike tanon bomb here fourth round pick and Ryan tanhill come to the Pittsburgh Steelers and Russell Wilson gets sent to the Minnesota Vikings all right this seems a little weird to me let me know what you guys think down there in the comments section would you accept this trade give me an A or give me a d for accept or decline obviously you're signing tanah Hill in free agency that's why we have the fa on there he would not be a part of any trade but let me know would you make this swap if you were the Pittsburgh Steelers a for except D for decline now the reason why I think this is dumb okay is that if the Steelers wanted Ryan tanel over Russell Wilson they already had the chance to do that during NFL free agency but they opted to go with Russell Wilson as their quarterback this year over Justin fields too by the they chose him over Justin Fields trading for him initially and then they chose him over Ryan tan so the fact that now they're going to switch course and they're going to trade Russell Wilson to a different team before he even takes a regular season snap with them um it just doesn't make any sense I mean frankly Mike I don't understand what what where you're even coming from with this I mean Russell was Pittsburgh's plan A before Justin Fields even arrived remember their initial plan was to go with Russell Wilson and Kenny picket until Kenny picket was a crybaby and demanded himself out of Pittsburgh and then they're like all right fine we'll trade for Justin Fields but Russell Wilson's their plan right now man I think that's pretty apparent that's been apparent for a while um however I don't necessarily think a trade is impossible all right now I don't think it's going to be to the Vikings and I don't think it's going to be before this season but I could potentially see a scenario where Russell Wilson gets traded before the trade deadline all right and the way that happens is if he loses the job all right if he loses his starting job to Justin fields which let's acknowledge it is a possibility at this point in time if the Steelers get out of the gate cold if they're losing footb games if things aren't working with Russell Wilson they're going to eventually go to Justin Fields And if that happens before the trade deadline it wouldn't shock me if Russ is like trade me to Minnesota or trade me to Las Vegas trade me somewhere where I can play so if Russell Wilson loses his job to Justin fields and there's a team out there willing to trade a mid- round pick to the Pittsburgh Steelers for him I absolutely think it's possible Russell Wilson could be traded this year so let me know what you guys think down there in the comments section percent chance Russ Wilson gets traded this year put it on a scale of 0 to 100 for me down there in the comments section for me personally I'm going to go about 15% that might seem High um and I think that he's more likely to get traded at this point than Fields right if Russell Wilson starts the season as the starter and plays well I don't think the Steelers trade justtin Fields all right I think they still view him as a potential long-term option but if you're going to Justin Fields you're pretty much saying Russ you know we're already on to the Future all right so I think if any of these quarterbacks gets traded this year it's going to be Russell Wilson and maybe I'm a little high with the 15% number here um but I do think it's an interesting situation if Fields does take over I do think we start talking going on I think Brandon actually wants a relatively fully guaranteed contract he wants guarantees going into the final year of his contract which isn't normal on a normal NFL contract so that seems to be the holdup right now um so I'm definitely looking at this situation right now as you know it's great if the Steelers pull it off I think they have their price that they're willing to pay for them uh but Omar Khan's chilling right now I think they like van Jefferson I think they like Calvin Austin the third I think they like the future of Roman Wilson I think they think Pat firemouth can be a very viable receiving weapon for them this year so this gets more contentious by the day between iuk and the 49ers the longer this thing drags on in my opinion the more likely he becomes a Pittsburgh stealer uh and we're starting to approach a moment here where the Pittsburgh Steelers need to make a decision like do they even want to bring in Brandon iuk if you're go gonna get him less than a week before the start of the season I mean they have to start answering these questions like are we approaching a point where Omar k says you know what we're going to lower our our tradeoffer here because this guy's not going to have an opportunity to uh build chemistry with Justin fields and Russell Wilson I mean it's going to be an interesting situation we hope that there's a res prone which is something that Steelers do not want they want their quarterback to be something along the lines of what Kenny picket was able to do last year Koop and protect the football um they want their guy to be a game manager now whether or not they should want that is Up For Debate but they want their number one highest paid defense to be the main driver of Victory they want uh a heavy Run game under Arthur Smith all right they want their quarterback to throw the Deep ball they want them to take care of the football and to be accurate all right the two things that Justin Fields has had a hard time doing protecting the football and being accurate with the football he holds on to the ball too much as well so like I I think Justin Fields is a fantastic Plan B option where if things aren't working plan a Russell Wilson then you go to Justin fields and he's got the dynamic playmaking ability he's got the rushing ability right you can really do some fun creative things with Justin Fields I'm not against going to Fields eventually but unless Russell Wilson is just absolutely God awful which he wasn't on Saturday in my opinion um you got you got you got to stick you got to stick watching out for let's get into it right now welcome into Steelers talk I am your host Jack Sperry and today I have my week three preseason preview for the Pittsburgh Steelers as they get ready to take on the Detroit Lions uh in the final preseason game of the 2024 preseason now we will be going live for this game we'll have an hour pregame coverage live playby playay and then also postgame football game is which quarterback comes out on top in terms of who wins the starting quarterback position for the Pittsburgh Steelers to start this year and obviously it is between Justin fields and it is between Russell Wilson it looks like Russell is going to get the first team reps again on Saturday um and Justin Fields is going to get the second team reps okay but make but make no bones about it coach Mike Tomlin has not made an official decision he has not officially made up his mind and if he has made up his mind he hasn't let us know which way this team is going to be going at qb1 when this team lines up against the Atlanta Falcons in week one however I do think going into this game the biggest ex factor in determining who's going to play that week one matchup is how Russell Wilson plays because he has been in the pole position throughout this entire process he is still listed as the qb1 on the Steelers depth chart so if he goes out there and he plays well he keeps the offense on schedule he gets into the end zone he looks sharp he looks clean he looks like he's ready to go I think he's going to be locking up that number one quarterback job however if the offense stalls again like they did last week against Buffalo uh constant three and outs no points scored very few uh first downs that's going to give Justin Fields an opportunity once again to come in and light it up I didn't think he made the most of his opportunity uh when when he came in against the Buffalo Bills last week he had some really poor reps on film in my opinion had some really good stuff too but I do think he had some tough uh he had some tough plays in that game against backup quality players uh however if he comes out and if he follows up Russell Wilson stinking it up with him lighting up the place I think that that's probably the one way he could become the starting quarterback for the Pittsburgh Steelers in week one here but what's that you guys let me know down there in the comments section will Russ lead a touchdown drive this Saturday with the first team offense give me a yes or a no for today's pin comment YouTube's going to throw an ad break here in just a couple of seconds uh but before or or and when YouTube sends you that ad break give me a yes or a no and answer today's pin question another thing I'm really going to be watching this week is broadrick Jones because you know you look at the pass blocking grades of all the other offensive linemen on the first team uh for the Pittsburgh Steelers Dan Mo Jr Isaac SEO Zack fras James Daniels they're actually pretty good the one person that's really really bad is brri Jones and when you watch the film it's the same story Brodrick Jones is getting beat like a drum whether it's on the right side or whether it's on the left side here are his uh preseason Pro Football Focus grades and listen Pro Football Focus isn't gospel but it is a nice tool to see just how maybe productive somebody is uh on film so 51.4 overall grade is really really bad the Run blocking grade if you believe it is worse than the past blocking grade he's supposed to be a a mauling run blocking type right tackle and he hasn't been able to do either to this point you look at the pass block great against Buffalo last week where he gave up three quick pressure sacks against Greg rouso um and it's 40.8 right and that just looks terrible uh for brri Jones and he needs to play better and if he doesn't look better he said to the media this week that he is as healthy as he's going to be this season so if that's true and he doesn't look better and he continues to give up quick pressure you have to sit him right you just can't afford to put somebody out there that is put that is giving up that much quick pressure in that amount of time you just can't do it and honestly broad's issues right now they go beyond just playing right tackle right I hear a lot of people say oh just moving over to left tackle he'll be just fine and I do think he's more comfortable over there and I think you know he will play somewhat better if he gets moved over there but his hand placement is awful his footwork is awful right the the there's certain things here that he's showing on film that are just not fixable by just moving somebody over to the other side especially when the current left tackle for the Steelers right now Dan Moore Jr is actually playing pretty darn well his pass blocking grade is at an 85.7 his uh offensive line coach during the off Seasons Duke manyweather who's the most World Famous offensive line coach on the planet said that he had an excellent off season this year and he was one of the best people that worked out with him this off season so Dan Moore Jr's been really impressive so brri Jones has to prove that he deserves to be on the field and he needs to do it this weekend it's going to be a big week for bradrick Jones if he doesn't show out I think there's at least a chance he gets sat down once Troy Fano does come back from that injury now coming up here on Steelers talk four more storylines to watch in this week three preseason matchup for your Pittsburgh Steelers but before we get into thing I'm going to be watching out for here this week is whether or not Zack Frasier is ready to be this team's starting center week one now what I'll say to this point is that the kid's been a stud in pass protection all right his pass blocking grade right now through the first two weeks of the preseason absolutely Stellar the anchor has been there uh the footwork and the technique has certainly been there this guy is a legit NFL pass protector from the center position however there are still some warts as a run blocker he gave up multiple tackles for losses uh against against the bills last week and you look at the Pro Football Focus grading it certainly backs up the tape all right the overall grade is 63.5 it's not terrible but it's definitely dragged down by the Run blocking grade at just a 58.4 and then against Buffalo it was even worse at 45.7 when he gave up multiple tfl so that's the area of his game where he still needs to prove himself I think you know a concern of mine with his ever go ever since going back to West Virginia is I'm I wasn't sure he was a great fit for a wide zone offense like the Pittsburgh Steelers he just doesn't have the elite quick twitch that you want from a center in this type of offense but hey man uh he's smart he's tough he's Dependable as a pass protector now he just needs to finish off his profile here with a good performance as a run blocker against the Detroit Lions then we get to beanie Bishop Jr here who did not play in the Buffalo Bills game but he did against the Texans in week one of the preseason and he didn't exactly play great or you look at the overall grade of 51.5 not fantastic the coverage grade uh sitting below that at 51.2 he gave up some pretty big plays he admitted that he didn't have his best game that week um and you know not being there in week two definitely didn't help his stock either so right now the slot cornerback battle it's going to be won by either beanie Bishop Jr or Thomas Graham Jr who got the first team reps in the slot last week I think Thomas Graham Junior's had a really good camp so I don't think that this job is necessarily locked in for Beanie Bishop Jr but make no mistake beanie's got the inline Road here he's got pole position if you will and if he goes out there and plays well shows that he's that he belongs on an NFL field this weekend I think he'll be your starting final thing I've talked about this every single uh preview during the preseason who's going to come up with the edge four job okay because right now you got four people that are all vying for that final position Kiren Johnson I think has the inline road right now Jeremiah moon is certainly somebody that could win the job as well and then two udfas that have really shown out in Camp in preseason to this point Julius wiof and jacobe Whitman both of which have had really good uh camps in preseason like I said so my get my best guess here is that I think Kiron Johnson will be the fourth Edge rusher that's rostered here I think that Jeremiah Moon Julius well shof jomi windman those guys could certainly make the practice squad as well but Kiron brings a certain level of explosiveness uh you know in First Step quickness that you just don't see every day so I think you got TJ watt Alex heisi Nick herig locked in I think this weekend Kiron Johnson solidifies himself as the edge number four percentage uh he's known as somebody that protects the football so I just checked the numbers on pro football reference Russ has 4 s combined fumbles and interceptions 47 in the past in the past three years so since Justin has been in the league since 2021 Justin Fields has 68 so that is 21 more turnovers than just than Russell Wilson over the last three years and by the way 38 fumbles for Justin Fields doesn't uh 38 fumbles doesn't Wilson have like a top 10 interception percentage like top 10 lowest intercep interception percentage ever yeah yeah Russell Wilson's interception percentage for his career is 1.9 which is eigh all time that's crazy so this is somebody that protects the football and this is why the Steelers brought him in is because he doesn't throw the ball into Super Tight Windows right he's very careful with the ball because he understands turnovers equal losses oh yeah so I think I think what vibin with the dogs was uh was mentioning is negative plays so when you take into account sacks with fumbles with interceptions negative plays Russell Wilson has I think just slightly more than Justin Fields cuz he's taken so many sacks that makes sense but like you remember here they're trying to put pressure on the Steelers and they've tried it like 10 times at this point and the Steelers aren't budging so at some point the 49ers are just going to have to say all right we have these two options either pay Brandon iuk what he's asking for or trade him to Pittsburgh and they're have to make a decision likely before the start of the season it's going to be interesting to see what they end up deciding here but I agree with DJ that I don't think it's impossible that auk still lands with Pittsburgh going from a new black diamond vibing with the dogs coming in says look I don't like either guy uh I don't like either guy but the excuses for Russ and not Justin is wild Fields was six for seven for 68 yards with the first team Russ had 47 yards well I mean although that's true if George Pickins you know makes the catch I mean you we might be talking about a completely different narrative around Russ And Russ and himself very similar uh game to Justin with the first team offense in my opinion I came on this show and I said which Justin Fields with the first team the two fumbled snaps weren't on him and the two sacks that he took on third down weren't on him all right so I thought Justin um you know played fine in that first preseason game maybe unremarkable but definitely good enough and then Russ goes out there and I thought it very similar I thought he got through his reads quickly he found open receivers it's just that the penalties the quick sacks and the bad Run game put the team behind the sticks so much that the defenses could play back and he was forced to be conservative all right so I don't think that we have a clear view as to which guy has played better Justin kind of struggled if we're being honest in that second preseason game um you know if you want reference to that by the way JT suvan the QB school has a great video out on Justin fields' second preseason performance so you guys can check that out but at the end of the day here ma'am it's about what you guys think here so who starts more games this year type RW if you think Russell Wilson will start more games for the Pittsburgh Steelers this year or type JF anything Justin the Steelers drafting Travis Hunter with their first round pick thoughts I mean that would certainly generate Buzz right I I think he's a better Corner than he is a wide receiver um um but who knows how he's going to play this year how much he's developed as a receiver he's still a good receiver he could probably if he wanted to do both maybe he could in the NFL it's going to be interesting to see what he decides to do in what position or positions he decides to play in the league um but very talented individual man um it's going to be interesting to see uh where he is because if he has a phenomenal season like if he wins Heisman Trophy he's goingon to be a top 10 pick hopefully the Steelers aren't drafting that high so I guess we'll see what goes on with Travis Hunter but definitely veteran tackle um honestly Dan Moore Junior's played well enough in Camp and in the preseason where he would really have to stink for them to bring in a veteran at this point now maybe if Troy F utano that you know they're going to choose between broadrick or Troy uh at right tackle and Dan Moore Jr has certainly played well enough to be the starting left tackle this year in preseason so another thing they could do is they could put broadrick on the left side if they think you know he's the future of that position and they they've certainly said that here in Pittsburgh um so it's going to be interesting to see how they sort things out especially with Fano coming back into the lineup here relatively soon I guess we'll just have to see how everything plays out got another one from Christian game this weekend right so just Justin and Russ will both play it'll be interesting to see who gets first team reps how much first team reps um and last game against Buffalo they got all the quarterback reps so it'll be interesting to see if Kyle Allen gets in there or if John rice plumbley gets there a little bit um but definitely think both these guys are going to get quite a bit of run Steelers than Jamar Chase just because Chase is coming from a division rival right so I would probably X Jamar Chase um if if I were man I just don't see him ever becoming a Pittsburgh stealer unless unreasonable in his contract and that is what's holding it up right now so I don't know what's going to happen it's GNA be it's going to be interesting I guess I'd say it's still a coin flip cuz I have no idea where this is going Coupe I have no idea I have no idea I mean seems like the Steelers you know they gave 49 the 49ers a call like two weeks ago said this is our final offer take it or leave it and then the 49ers haven't called Pittsburgh back since I would lean towards it them getting a deal done and him remaining in San Francisco but that's not to rule out anything I just think that's kind of where we're headed um but yeah I mean the Niners aren't happy with how things have gone it seems like a lot of the major details in their contract that they've kind of ironed out but the years and the guaranteed money they're still a part on and that's why we haven't gotten a deal done yet um iuk hasn't practiced one time during training camp so far and he's kind of just they're both playing just a game of chicken basically and then when it comes down to it they're going to have to decide within the next week or so because real live NFL football begins in a week and do the ners want to be without their number one number two wide receiver I don't think so he's their number one man he is like he's Brock P's favorite weapon so like I've been saying since the beginning it's the smart move to pay him just [ __ ] pay him and then trade Debo next to offseason that's the smart move and and they can get rid of Debo next offseason with zero money against the C exactly so you can just trade Debo like you probably have to trade him for like a lower price tag cuz everyone knows you have to trade you lose you lose your leverage probably get a fourth or a fifth for him really have a lot of interest in anybody else right so it seems to me that um one of the guys that is in the room whether that's Kiron Johnson Jeremiah Moon J Julius welsha one of these guys is going
