speaks out on the NCAA Michigan State set a record on Saturday and nobody noticed and well our big 10 Classics and live action at the end of this podcast hang on for that all right so they say that everything is bigger in Texas that is until the Longhorns arrive in Ann Arbor and see the big house filled with 107,000 people all dressed in maze by the way burnt orange that's going to clash with the maze when you watch it on TV on Saturday afternoon but let's talk about the game again it'll Air at noon on Fox it's a big one first of all Fox's big noon kickoff will be there in Ann Arbor and I say this with all the sarcasm I can muster Urban Meers should be greeted with the utmost enthusiasm when he walks into the big house for the show on Saturday but they are there because this is the biggest game of the day in college football the question is is Michigan still at a level where they can win a game like this they can but it's gon to be tough well Michigan won The Natty last year Texas was in the playoffs last year too coming up short against Washington now you need to look no further than the quarterback situation for both of these teams kind of see the difference in where each program is at right now Texas brings veteran Quinn ERS at quarterback he could have gone to the NFL last year he's that good he decided to come back to Texas for another season and he's good he's really good and his backup is probably the most famous backup in the entire country in Arch Manning in fact with this matchup on the schedule so early in the season this game was supposed to kind of be Arch Manning's National coming out party on national TV until Quinn ERS decided n I'm going to come back to Texas for another year and of course that delayed Arch Manning taking over as the starting quarterback meanwhile the quarterback situation in Michigan is rough at best right will we all agree the Wolverines Star Quarterback from last year JJ McCarthy did not come back to school for another year like Quin yours did he's now off in the NFL and last week at the season opener against Fresno State the Wolverines I thought offered a bit of a surprise when they tried it out former walk- on Davis Warren as a starting quarterback Alex orgy who played sparingly as a change of pace guy with AJ McCarthy last year was expected by many to be the starter made a few appearances in last week's game too he still appears to be a change of paace quarterback guy right although he did throw a touchdown pass in the Wolverine's first drive but overall the Wolverine's passing game wasn't that great last week it just wasn't a lot of things weren't that great last week and by the way what is Jack tuttle's role in all this going to be as he enters his seventh college football season he's been hurt Michigan's been very vague about his status and I'm wondering if maybe he could be a surprise starter on Saturday or at some point the the reason I say that you know head coach Chiron Moore waited till the last second to announce who is starting quarterback was going to be now I think he likes to keep people guessing but I also had a feeling maybe he was waiting for the last second to see maybe if Jack Tuttle was going to be healthy and maybe he was going to get the starting nod last week I'm not sure outside a quarterback I still have concerns about this Michigan football team they did not look like Michigan football until Midway through the fourth quarter last week when their size and their strength eventually had beaten Fresno State down and then they started to look like Michigan football in the second half of the fourth quarter last week the offensive line they had five new starters uh all of them up front were uh they look new they look but you know what that's normal offensive line is kind of like the last unit to find some cohesiveness we'll see how they look this week the running game with Donovan Edwards struggled although colum Mings had some nice runs in the second half and while coulston Loveland should be a big weapon this year there doesn't appear to be a deep threat a fast deep threat to kind of stretch defenses on the michig offense at least not yet on defense at times they look like their usual self up front Kenneth Grant Mason Graham they're going to be in the NFL someday they do their thing up front they clog everything up I thought they did a pretty nice job defensive coordinator win marale used a heavy rotation at corner I don't know if he was just wanting to use game live game situations to kind of figure things out he was rotating uh guys in which ad me at times that starter will Johnson was not on the field I don't like that I think will Johnson should be on the field at all times for Michigan unless he's being carried off uh as evidenced by his 86 yard game ceiling pick six in the fourth quarter now while I do have some concerns about Michigan Texas has some weaknesses that the Wolverines may be able to exploit in this game I mentioned Michigan's lack of passing game or deep threat well Texas's biggest weakness may be their secondary their pass defense ranked 59 in the country last year and the team lost two of its best pass rushers to the NFL so I don't know how solid they are in defense maybe Michigan can exploit that somewhat and while they have the advantage a quarterback in this game with Quinn yur they top five receivers and their top rusher all moved on to the NFL from last year so they've they're like Michigan they got guys have moved on there's new guys that need to step up so this game may be more even than a lot of people are thinking a lot of people are saying hey Texas is going to win this game well we see they got the better quarterback at least right now but there may be some other weaknesses that Michigan could jump on so brings us to the question we asked at the top can Michigan win this game yeah they can it's going to be tough I think HomeField Advantage will help a little bit although Quinn ures has played in some tough spots and there's a lot of players here on Texas that have gone into Tuscaloosa and won at Alabama before so a lot of guys are used to this so I don't think it's G to be an automatic advant Advantage for for Texas this is something that look at most coaches have told me over my broadcast career that you will see the biggest jump and Improvement in college football from week one to week two you know week one is kind of feeling everything out getting off the practice field going against live action it's hard mistakes are made you make the big Improvement after you watch film and you go into week two and then you kind of get into your flow for the rest of the year based on what I saw last week let's hope that's the case for Michigan this week this game is going to tell us a lot about what direction the rest of the season will go for Chiron Moore and Michigan are they still at the level where they can play in big games and win big games or are they gonna take a slight step back we're g to find out uh Win Lose or Draw we will find out what Michigan is going to be for the rest of the season again most of the experts out there are expecting the Longhorns to Come Away with a victory in fact Vegas has them about a seven and a half Point favorite in this game as we speak with you right now what do you think I know and that meant he played both Texas and Michigan in the college football playoffs last year so what does he think about this year well uh he was on an SEC conference call and he was asked about both programs now he says he thinks they both believe in physical football and if both teams know win big games by running the ball but he also admitted look I I've been busy moving from Washington to or to Alabama I haven't spent a lot of time paying attention to Texas and Michigan's roster and all the moves and everything so he's a little bit out of the loop that's understandable but he thinks that some things will always be the same that they'll be physical and ready to go speaking of Michigan and its struggle get the Run game going last week Chiron Moore added another running back coach to the staff recently going into the season late August Jaden Everett was added as an offensive analyst with the goal of helping new running back coach Tony Alford who joined the Wolverine staff this summer or this spring actually when it came over from Ohio State was an interesting move at the time and I think this is an interesting move as well getting him a little help in Jaden Everett Everett spent last season on the Vanderbilt staff he's known chirome Moore since high school and he's known Alford for 10 years so hopefully that all works out speaking of Alford he's not happy with the Michigan running game at all fact he came out and said he failed as a coach in the game last week against Fresno State uh not happy with the running game hopefully Looking For A Better Effort on Saturday versus Texas as long as we're talking about Michigan coaches past or present Jim Harbaugh always a fun topic on this Jim Harbaugh's Candid Interview with ESPN podcast now the coach of the Chargers of course um we all know it's well documented he has spent a lot of time battling the NC AA Burger Gat spy gate what he spoke recently uh in an interview on ESPN he didn't really want to talk too much about it when asked about those investigations but he did throw some criticism in the direction of the NCA again forther handling of the $2.7 billion lawsuit filed by student athletes of course the lawsuit resulted in a settlement in which past present and future player uh student athletes will get paid billions of dollars Revenue shares what has come out of this Harbaugh said the ncaa's been keeping money from athletes for decades and they have no credibility he said that's the truth so you could sit here and say hey the NCA is putting a show cause fan on Harbaugh the NCA this they're investigating that of course he's making $80 million with the Chargers he doesn't care what the NCA has to say because he doesn't respect them and doesn't think they're credible now from Michigan to Michigan State did you know Spartans fans that Michigan State set a big 10 record in their let's call it less than impressive 16 to10 win over Florida Atlantic this past weekend yeah they did you might not have noticed but they have the record now for consecutive Michigan State's Record-Breaking Streak non-conference home opener wins to start the season they've now done this 15 times 15 consecutive non-conference home opener wins how about that and they haven't all been cupcakes either they beat Oregon back in 2015 they beat Boise State in 2012 so there have been a couple big games in there along the way it's a nice record why not why not uh flouted a little bit not bad all right much continues to be said about the Oregon Ducks and the fact you know we just talked about Michigan State a non-improved win I think a win is a win but it was not impressive I guess if you want to call it same thing with Oregon all I hear all week long hey they only beat Idaho 2414 I think a lot of people were expecting a big blowout in that game and it didn't happen too many penalties too many short plays all that kind of stuff now I think they game surprised the Ducks as well think they were expecting I don't may you could say they overlooked Idaho I don't think Dan Ling lets his team Overlook anybody I think that's just how it worked out in game one expecting a big Improvement week two although respectable opponent we'll get into that in a minute but Dan Lanning said there was nothing free given to him on the field that day and cornerback Dante Manning talked to the media after practice week this week and he said that the team had to go back to the doctor and fix what was wrong getting back to work getting better ahead of this week's game against a a tough Boise State team could be an interesting game another good gauge game Manning emphasized communication and tackling better and swarming the ball on defense of course he's one of the leaders there on that defense and when he speaks people listen uh the Boise State Broncos they they could come out swinging they got quarterback Maddox Matson Maddox Matson now he beat out Southern Cal transfer Malachi Nelson for the job so we'll see I'm gonna be very interested in this game against the Oregon Ducks on Saturday afternoon I know you will too all right speaking of what's coming up this weekend as you know maybe football classic Colorado at Nebraska at Nebraska and I'm really looking forward to this game this year this Saturday Saturday night but in this one from 1996 the Corn Husker defense took center stage in their 17-12 victory over the Buffs holding Colorado to a season low uh offense while sacking quarterback Cy Demmer three times in that one and then we have live Friday Night Football two Big Ten Football Excitement big 10 teams are in action on on Friday night Indiana has a game and Northwestern has a game Lakeside with the one that will air on the Big 10 Network at 7 o'clock Eastern time Western Illinois comes into Bloomington to take on the Indiana hooers then we move on to Saturday the Big 10 Network's Big 10 tailgate show comes from Happy Valley and Penn State that will start airing at 10 o'clock Eastern and then they will go into their live broadcast at Big 10 football at noon Bowling Green at Penn State this is their home opener because they opened on the road at West Virginia dazzled everybody on TV with this new look offense led by Andy Cole and Nikki now they get to come home in front of the faithful and show off there that will be uh that'll be a fun atmosphere out there and then at 3:30 more big 10 football Michigan State at Maryland this is our first Big 10 conference game of the season Big 10 versus Big 10 Michigan State at Maryland 3:30 Maryland put up a 50 spot last week Michigan State only scored 16 we'll see how this uh evens out at Maryland we'll take a look at this game tomorrow on our pigskin picks among all the others Saturday continues at uh 7:30 more big 10 football Western Michigan at Ohio State under the lights at the Horseshoe probably gonna be a long day for Western Michigan against will Howard and Company uh meanwhile at 11 o'cl we got to get used to these 11 o'clock starts on the East Coast with big 10 football now that Southern Cal and all the West Coast teams have their home games Utah State at USC you can watch that on the Big 10 Network USC their first uh get their home opener for one they played in that neutral site at Vegas and impressed the whole college football World against LSU on Sunday night couple of ranked teams going at it and USC on on top all those wide receivers and that improved defense and Miller Moss at quarterback that is a fun fun football team watching USC all right and then let's look at uh Sunday I only put one of these on here they got their uh Big 10 football in 60 where they just do edit after edit snap by snap by snap I do know for a fact at two o'clock Eastern they will have Michigan State at Maryland a one-hour package highlight deal so if you missed it on Saturday and you want watch it on Sunday go ahead they've got these uh scheduled the the Big 10 football and 60 scheduled throughout the day they haven't announced at the time of this podcast what games they're going to be putting in but there's gonna be a whole Myriad of them throughout the day on Sunday so
