Bill O'Brien's Winning Mentality: The Perfect Fit for Boston College Football

continue talking about that Florida State game because there's still meat on that bones we're gonna look at Bill O'Brien and why I think we're learning more and more why he is the perfect hire for the boss and college Eagles I'll explain more on today's show secondly I want to look at the difference between Thomas Castellanos at this time last year and Thomas castalano's now we'll look at his growth and then we'll get a big injury update for the upcoming Duane game so we got a busy packed episode don't go anywhere make sure you hit that like button before you leave all right so Bill O'Brien now one and0 with Boston College and has his first top 25 win which took forever for Jeff affley to get and Steve adio I think had like what two or three during his seven years with BC so he's already got himself in uh ahead of the ahead of the game in terms of some of the previous coaches and watching him in one game it is clear to me that Bill O'Brien is the perfect fit and the perfect coach to build rebuild Boston College into more than just a six and six or a seven and six team he is a guy that I truly believe after watching that game Saturday and hearing what he's saying now is going to be able to bring Boston College back into a national relevancy will they be a national title Contender no probably not but will they be a top 25 team I absolutely think they will and I think that'll be a regular occurrence under Bill O'Brien you have have now a coach who is established who has done this for years who is qualified who can do the things they need to do week in and week out to take the resources that he has and maximize them to the best ability and make Boston College a a very good team you know this is basically the same team that Jeff Halley had last year year Jeff Halley to his credit added a ton of these transfers in from the transfer portal that you saw so you saw guys like Tran Ward and Kamari Morales said McConnell um you know uh brre Brown they're all guys Jeff Halley brought in but I want to ask you a question and this is not a knock on Halley because you know I don't want to like rip the guy but do you have faith that if Jeff Halley was coaching that game on Monday that BC would be a one and0 team right now or do you think BC would have blown it I without a doubt think that if Jeff hafley was that coach on Monday BC would have lost they would have found a way to lose that game I don't think they would have been as prepared I think they would have had some situational blunders I just don't see it and I see Bill O'Brien winning this game and then moving on and the part that I wanted to bring up because we talked about all that first stuff before is his mentality right now there's a two-part uh conversation here about how O'Brien's mentality is very different Jeff Halley I felt like and even Steve adio their whole system was like we're The Underdogs we're gonna come in there and we're gonna try to stun him that was always the kind of mentality you heard about from those previous two head coaches you don't hear that at all under Bill O'Brien he expects to win these games and you hear it when he talks he's not he's not uh fing filling you with baloney here folks obrien expects to win he has the mentality that you're going to win so when you bring in your guys and you're telling them you're going to win it's a very different athlete mentality then going in and saying we're going to try to see if we can catch these guys off guards and stun them that implies that you're expecting somewhat to lose and that you're hoping that maybe you could win there's no hope in what Bill O'Brien's preaching he thinks he's gonna win and that's a very very big difference from Jeff affley the other big piece that I think is part of his mentality that I love hearkens back to Bill Bill bellich and Nick Sabin which is they just had a Monumental win and even on Monday night right after the win Bill o Brian is preaching that they have to clean things up and that they are not this is you know we're GNA celebrate we're gon to move on and then come today on Wednesday when they have their press conference he ref he B basically refuses to speak glowingly about anything we have to continue to improve he had a statement that I thought was great which is his mentality is not how does this team look in week one it's how does this team improve by week 12 he this is Bel Bill bellich to a te you know that you know O'Brien has learned under him for years obviously that you can't just sit on your laurels and go you know go after a win and the Jeff Halley I felt like did this a little bit too so I'm not going to say he didn't but it was it's so clear with Bella Bill O'Brien that this is how he feels about how BC has to be run you're not like Wednesday he did not want to talk about it at all um they were talking about I someone asked him about the offensive line and how great they were and he's like yeah they played well but there are still mistakes and we have to clean that kind of stuff up being complacent would be the worst thing Boston College could be I don't get that sense at all with Bill O'Brien like he just wants to continue to improve and he's gonna continue to look for things to improve which is going to keep this team fresh it's gonna let this team wins win he also to wrap things up made a challenge one that I've heard Jeff affley do too which is he was challenging the fans he said basically we need the fans at every game this year you need to show up that is give that gives players an edge that gives you a home field advantage and I totally agree with him here because you need to fill up BC the stadium you need for for recruiting for the players for every reason that you can think of and it and it does show to people on TV like who are watching going oh there's half empty Alumni Stadium again versus wow they're really crazy there for Boston College fans out there this is your chance we've had a lot of malays around this program right and I'm not blaming you for not showing up for those last few years but now you have a coach who's delivering you need to do your part you can't just sit at home not go to the games and then complain when things don't happen like when you lose a recruit or a transfer has no interest in coming here you need to do your part and show up and have it's fun go to Alumni Stadium get get your friends to tailgate do whatever you got to do but Bill O'Brien's challenging you not just me get out to that game and it's Duane and yeah they're gonna beat him but hey maybe you get to watch BC score a whole lot of touchdowns that's a lot of fun too right but that's beside the point my big Point here is Bill O'Brien he is the perfect fit for BC he is the guy that has the mentality that's going to maximize and get recruit recruits here you're going to see improvements in recruiting very soon what if you if you're not thrilled with the group that they have now it's going to just continue to get better especially if they keep winning the way they did on Monday now in our second segment we're gonna flip it over to the quarterback I want to talk about Thomas only throwing the ball 16 times running the ball quite a bit but managing his offense in being able to as I said was a key preventing silly mistakes he made not really any he had that one baded down pass and that was it he's now been the head the quarterback for BC for a year remember he took over in that first week and I wanted to look at just as him as a quarterback how he has grown if you go back a year I think it was against Holy Cross there was that Infamous play where he made the um the hand motion you know which one I'm talking about that was completely inappropriate I believe he got flagged for it and every PE clutcher out there got really upset about it I still get tweets from one dude who continuously cannot let it go but yeah he was a little bit um arrogant there and a little bit of an hothead to where he's at now I want to share a quick story about Thomas Tommy I met him over the summer at at media day that was not a big deal I meet him at press conferences all the time but for for media Day this year I lost child care for that day there was an issue and I could not get someone to watch my son who I was watching all summer and I had to bring I asked the Sid I got to bring him to uh Camp to to the media day I wouldn't bring him to Camp because I there a lot of big dudes running around and I you know I want to risk that but it's mey day they're all just sitting at tables it wasn't a big deal they were great was great about it they let him come all the players the coaches were all super diced with my son as I was doing interviews kind of walking around and he we're going through the players and we stop at Thomas castalano's table Tommy castalanos and I can tell you my son is a huge huge castalanos fan like it's the only player he knows he want when he play throws around the football in the backyard he wants to be castalanos like he's his guy I've been looking to try to get him Jersey whatever I could tell you that Tommy castalano spent like two or three minutes talking to my son told him how much he loved his name he was checking out like talking about his Yoda shirt he had on and just like laughing with him a little bit my little guy he's five years old was buzzing after this it was such a cool moment and now my son just kind of goes around the house and like talks about how hey I got to meet Tommy castalanos and he said hi and he liked my name he's never going to forget that it was such a good moment and shows how how like just the first impression that folks had at him last year is so off this is a guy that is Boston College like just that just that interaction he had with my son shows one thing then after the game they ask him about what he's gonna do now that he had won this game he goes well I got class on Wednesday I'm I go to school at Boston College yeah this guy is Boston College like whether you thought liked what he did last year or not in that that Holy Cross game he has come a long way and he's the perfect representative for this University and he's playing at a such a high level right now he didn't have to throw the ball at all really against Florida State I Al I saw some folks are complaining about that like you didn't need to they were running and Florida State couldn't stop you if they were stopping the run then you could pass it but they weren't you could keep doing that all game long you know there were times where they had to but we'll have to wait and see what happens there but I think castalanos just in terms of his maturation and his leadership qualities and what he means to this team has come along way in about a year he he seems like a veteran now he seems and plays like a quarterback he's been around and he looks and feels like a like a quarterback that you can trust when it comes to Big situations when it came to like when the game was going on on Monday and you know there'd be third Downs especially the like long drives in the first half where you know BC was just marching down the field you get to third down and you just you trusted him you you trusted that he was gonna make a play whether himself or getting the ball to somebody else that would get them the first down and it just kept happening he just kept doing it I think we're gonna watch him especially this I mean obviously against duain where he's gonna probably look like Superman but there's gonna be some plays this year where he play he's going to take over games and they're there're you know last year it was against we some weaker opponents you know but he did it against SMU I think he's going to do it again you know soon and I think you're gonna see the pass game come as well it's there I saw it at practice it's not like you know we're waiting for it and you know Jeff Halley has it hidden behind practice that he can't throw I was at practice 10 times this summer I watched castalano throw he can throw yes he missed that that throw to Lewis Bond deep or re Reed Harris I'm sorry it was Reed Harris deep but a lot of quarterbacks do too so it's not like it's the worst thing in the world but he's come such a long way he has really matured into an elder basically an he's what a junior an elder statement Statesman for the Eagles so wanted to share that story but also to talk from a bigger perspective of how he is a leader now on this offense and it's his team like you know last year it was his team too but it feels like this is Tom Tommy castalano's team now in our final segment I'm gonna wrap things up with a big injury update that you're gonna want to not miss we'll confirmed that Logan Taylor Boston College's uh presumptive starting guard is back now he didn't say if he's going to play he say he's back I think I think his words like sometimes when you hear a coach speak you have to be very careful with what they're saying because sometimes they specifically pick out words that are are you have to really look at yeah he may be back at practice but is he gonna play we don't know but he's at back at at least he's back and that's good I honestly I I sent this out on our subtext our Eagles Nest subtext I have a sign up link in our show notes uh where I was talking to to some of our listeners and I said there's two ways to look at this and I lean one way on one hand playing him against duaine he hasn't practiced at all this summer could be good practice for him basically right you're playing in FCS School get him out there get him some reps that could be good not not the worst idea in the world I lean more in this this direction though have him practice for the next two weeks have him practice you know with the starters or or even you know start start with the starters or second team this year this week get him back to the starters next week and have him go against Missouri because the last thing that they need this sounds like it's an injury that's popped up a few times for for Taylor is for him to get re-aggravated against duaine and then lose him for another month you don't need that Dwayne Alec was F more than fine against FSU who was pretty good let him play again let Logan Taylor slowly come along I that's my opinion um but there's both ways of looking at it and you know maybe I don't have the right football mentality which is just get out there and and and get it going so you're I'm thinking you're gonna see him this weekend but there's still a possibility they could just sit him there's no injury updates on Grayson James uh and I haven't heard anything about Cameron Martinez so not sure he didn't bring up either of them I we I think we're I think I saw the SEC is now doing injury reports I I really hope the ACC does these the next coming years though again we talked about Bill O'Brien being a bill bellich guy I'm sure he could find a way around it like bich always did uh so that that wraps up today's episode on tomorrow's show we're going to have Mitch wolf back on and we're going to preview
