2023 Cumberland, MD Road Meet *Documentary*

[Music] [Applause] [Applause] beautiful and windy Cumberland Maryland this is October 2 1st 2023 we have a road meet for you today here in Western Maryland we're here at the uh we just had lunch at the Krabby Pig near downtown on the cnno toe path here's the old Western Maryland railway station as we make our way over to the zero mile post of the National Road that'll be our first stop yeah so [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] should be pretty blustery the rest of the day here is George Washington's headquarters that's right this is a very historic building George Washington took a leak behind it at some point in the 1750s so it's a national monument here is the mile zero for the National Road between Cumberland and Wheeling West Virginia uh Jay you trying to photob bomb this shot here what are you doing that's a good picture all [Applause] right yes there is a waterfall there right where the pier [Applause] is [Applause] [Applause] Scott Davis is our co-pilot today helping us with navigation and whatever technical issues come up uh nice to have you with us glad to join you Dan I I see that you had nothing better to do with your life than ride with me today no apparently not what does that say about me I don't know just kidding always glad to be with you Dan it's a pleasure it's good to see you again and uh I know you were talking off air that you hadn't been to Cumberland before no this is my first time up here and I am very surprised at how uh like compact this downtown is and how much there's going on around here yeah it's really it's really interesting like the the historic downtown here and then on the other side of the river there are all those historic churches and all that stuff over there I don't know if you got to see any of that on your way in is that besides West Virginia right no I mean like straight across to the West yeah but um yeah there there's so much to see in this area it's really it's really incredible that's right this is a family show I should watch my language it's a familyfriendly meet well we've been to meets where that wasn't the case no and New Orleans might get Rowdy well it's New Orleans it should get it should it might it might devolve into something else Al together are you uh stay or coming into town in advance for Marty gr I don't know what I'm doing yet um here's here's the National Road where it where it begins in Earnest as we start to head out of town um so I'm debating what I want to do um I mean it's going to be February so it's going to kind of there's not going to be much going on at my project in all likelihood so it might make sense for me to take that whole week but I'm not a I'm not much of a party animal myself so I don't know I can totally see myself flying down like Wednesday morning cu the flights will be much cheaper yeah it's true yeah going that direction on Wednesday morning yeah I don't know how much time you spent there I spent a month in New Orleans I it's a great oh really yeah was it for work or uh no I was right like at the kind of I don't want to say tail end of covid but like spring 2021 like rightest things were really reopening but before my office reopened I was doing like The Nomad thing a little bit oh okay the old wfh is that what they call it yeah the old wfh I I still do I still I had to think about that yeah yeah I still do that here's a milestone by the way oh there we go 130 to to uh Wheeling yeah you'll see those all over all along this highway here we've got them marked look for Milestones five and six um well I don't know yeah I didn't I didn't get to look into that too much I know that there's a milestone at the toll house so if you want to get a good picture along close up you'll you'll be able to get one there so you were there you were in New Orleans couple of years ago then yeah two years ago yeah great food seed oh you know what of all the cities I've been to that is my favorite food spot the food destination yeah there's just no shortage of interesting uh concoctions down there and it's right on the gulf too so everything that you get is fresh you know it's just it's just fantastic it's not like going to a place in like Omaha and ordering a c combo you know it's not the same thing right no yeah here's the National Road if you like old railroad Bridges this is another part of the country that's that should be up your alley oh yeah oh yeah that's the old um what do you call it the B yeah I think I can manage that I I think so too you you have faith in me oh yeah you had to think about it for a second are you sure uh yeah pretty sure okay so how did you get here when you came up this morning oh I just went the easy way okay yeah just 270 to 70 to 68 okay tomorrow I'm going to do some more uh have a little more fun I'm going to take 220 into 50 um and then I think over to Virginia 7 in Winchester um so yeah I've really never been on 50 like west of DC so I've got 50 clinched to Winchester so this will be so I'll get it now from somewhere in West Virginia out there at least he I see Oles there he is all right Al's looking good man good stuff cheap that's how I like it okay there's that oh wow there it is look at that I don't know how it's going to be this is going to be interesting parking wise yes so I guess I'm going to I'm going to back in yeah I'm assuming we're the first people here right yeah they'll be able to like parallel park up there I I I think that's true yeah or we could all just like double Park we got to get you one of those Dopey mascot costumes so you can go like [Laughter] this can double here whatever [Applause] hey all right cpz makes his own parking space we're here at the Lavale Toll House one of the [Applause] two work I th a place far from here come in sign part of how I get open the start yep one forland and one for all right so if everybody [Applause] just oh my goodness you so what did you think of that I thought I thought the the first part when we were in the front room and we were talking about National Pike and the toll housee history was very interesting I thought that that's all it was going to be tell truth and and when that was done I was like wow that was really great and then we went into the house and I was like I think we really don't have time for this yeah I know see you know what I don't like being the bad guy but like I we would never leave I was almost going to show this St and be like hey I'm sorry we're you're like the first stop on like a a several hour tour yeah that we want to get in before the end of the day yeah but yeah she was very nice and enthusiastic no it was I she definitely knows her stuff and all that I wish that we could have had more time I agree cuz I liked I liked her I thought yeah cuz like this old like toll stuff is like really fascinating so it I learned a lot about National Pike though I I did I learned a lot more than I thought I would I'll tell you that yeah all right anyway rejoining alt 40 West yeah I was not expecting that stop be an hour no oh man that's okay well we'll just make the next one a little bit quicker cuz I think we're just going to see the bridge no uh no museums to stop into again you don't want to go to another Museum this afternoon you know as long as it doesn't hold us up for an hour yeah can you just give us the cliff notes version please cuz we do oh there's another milestone yeah I think 7 mile 7 miles to Cumberland 124 to Wheeling I think there were I think most of them are still in place um it's Washington's Trail yeah that that third leg is going to be a a marathon yeah we're going to have the next mile uh the next Milestone is Milestone 10 that's the yeah I got the old old movie theater there The Day the Earth Stood Still I guess that's what they used to be I don't know what it is now they might still be showing movies there yeah yeah used 29 Whoa man what's your problem bro that would have been awesome we call it we almost caught our first uh accident on camera as long as we're not involved oh man that almost got real back there yeah see I love Maryland because of the green business route Shields yeah that needs to be more of a national thing in my opinion we have the we have the green business Interstate Shields right yep so that's already a thing I think Maryland's got it going on with the the green us business Ro Shields I here's the bypass pass pass it yeah hey man we got places to go man yeah I'm just saying it is interesting how they tied this in to the double roundabouts here yeah I won't bore you guys to death going through them but you get the [Music] idea so we basically just did a giant Circle yep so we're going to come back out to the light here the left back on to National Pike which left left or the other left that left that left yeah no that left getting close to Castleman Bridge yeah it's not it's not too much farther right 2.5 miles turn right at caman River Bridge State Park okay I think I can handle that yeah probably I yeah I'm sensing a little bit of Doubt from my passenger here you know what why do we even need to stop you want to just keep going you want to just go to like Pittsburgh yeah like we can stop Ates if you want like who cares I mean who cares about the bridge right uh I know see it 18 13 bridge I did add that in there by the way that's a good ad I thought I I thought I might entice one or two of you I think this is a group that will be enticed 210y Old Bridge well we sat through that Tollhouse tour so I'm sure you guys are already going to be interested in this also this isn't going to take that long so I hope not I hope I don't got to start grabbing you people from the bridge hopefully people will keep themselves on schedule oh wow there it is oh wow that is that's pretty nice right oh yeah yeah I figured there had to be a good reason why that was still here after 200 years yeah turns out there is all right we made it to the Castleman River Bridge built in 1813 part of the historic national highway it's a nice Old Stone Bridge isn't it let's [Applause] see get all we're not really [Applause] [Applause] going we're going to try to keep this Deek Lake what's happening [Applause] bro that's the bridge we were just on over there so we got three generations of bridge we got this one from 183 and we've got the more modern trust Bridge there and then beyond the trust Bridge off in the distance is the [Applause] interstate [Applause] tell you we picked the right weekend to come here if you're into Leaf peeping oh so beautiful isn't this great it's really nice I haven't seen any leaves yet DC still hasn't turned or if it has I haven't noticed because we don't have any treeson my name I guess yeah live right in the middle of the city so yeah it started to pop in my area New York yeah in the Hudson Valley I bet by now yeah yeah like cat skills are more like it is right now here okay so they're they're usually a couple weeks ahead of us it's i68 AKA adhs Corridor e AKA former US Route 48 so there have been three different us 48s over the years there was one in California and then there was this one and now it's currently in a different adhs Corridor down in West Virginia use continent to BU nice am I behind this Slowpoke again is it this guy again really what man I thought I got out ahead of this guy let's do it I I he all right I'm following 53 South right that's right right onto V Road and then left onto Winchester Road 53 sou yep okay continue South on 53 for for 2.7 miles this will take us to 220 I think yep yeah okay yeah see I I remember writing this so now it's slowly coming back to me but I don't freaking pay attention so that's why you know that's why I'm glad I have somebody actually telling me I'm supposed to do on my own damn itinerary uh this is probably the most complicated part here uh it's not even that crazy right so no I mean the the last leg is pretty easy yeah going to turn around you going to 220 which I think is I think 53 ends at 220 yeah so I I hate to break it to you but I don't think we're going to have much choice no so you know cuz the left will just take you back to Cumberland yeah but Cumberland sucks I don't want to go back to Cumberland yet just kidding you can go to jail if you want want to do that uh no no that doesn't appeal to you no it's free room and board you know yeah yeah but I'm already paying so yeah you're already good yeah all right okay we are soon to cross the North Branch of the pic River wow how about that all right welcome to whiz Virginia yay how long are we supposed to be on 28 for did I even four miles until we hit the village of Fort Ashby oh all right so it's four miles and it's another stretch after that yeah cuz then we just make a left on to Dan's Run Road all that's easy to remember okay and then the museum will be on your left in about a quar mile you know what you could play a really fun drinking game with driving around places like this like take a shot every time you see a Dollar General yeah I was going to say all these little burgs have Dollar Generals you can always they don't have much else but you can bet that there's a Dollar General yep I think get this I think this is it yeah yeah you know I was kind of tipped off by the brown sign that said Ashby's Fort to the left yep that was just a little hint there it is oh wow it is a lot less impressive looking than I thought it would be if we're honest I don't know what I was expecting you sure you don't want to go in for like a three-hour tour uh there's an entry fee for this one oh screw that yeah I ain't doing that no you want to hop out no I'm good I don't need to you good want to go to the dairy cup is that uh we got ice cream or something yeah what do we got here I'm just going to get a shot of it okay yeah yeah good if I can figure out this maneuver here let's see all right kids a little history lesson for you here you ready so that building right there George Washington took a dump in the ouse behind this building once back in whatever 17 whatever yeah the French and Indian War so like 1755 or something like that yep so not quite 300 years ago history was made the most famous excrement in American history was right there that's right so that so this fort here is rightfully a National Historic Landmark as a result I think I explained that well enough didn't I yeah it was perfect okay don't see any problem all right re rejoin your West virgin State Highway already in progress now for 5.7 miles left onto Green Springs Road okay we got a little while here I'm pretty sure it is for me there was a road Mead out here once that I went to and actually I'd have to ask Patrick he would know cuz I was with him I was in his car oh you were in the cpz mobile I was in the cpz mobile nice he it wasn't the cpz mobile he rented a huge Chevy to like extended cab nice it was really it was sweet I don't know why he did it just it was a good setup I know you see him coming in your ear view Mir you get out the way man yeah that's one of those that's one of those big ass trucks right oh yeah yeah cuz it it had like the yeah the back it had the extended back so I mean there was so much space there I was in like I was in the passenger seat Miles and Miles were you were you just in the kitchenette the whole time or but you uh you actually looking out the window I don't even remember ah there was a meat in this area yeah I we spent the night in Davis West Virginia oh was that the uh the cord or H meet yes the cter H meet yeah yeah that was like 2016 yeah 2016 that sounds right yeah yeah I've heard I've heard so many good things about that one I never I didn't go to that one I heard that was a really big hit was was a good was this green whatever road yeah road yeah so it's posted on here as Green Springs Road and then if you look at Google Maps it's Green Spring Valley Road oh yeah so depending on who's following what your mileage may vary and we're going to take this for a while for the next 8 miles at the Seven Mile point the road takes an unsigned right turn follow any 2 MD 51 signage you come across yeah I got that off of Google Maps like it doesn't actually point that the road is turning at that point or something something stupid like that cuz I know that people will tend to want to go straight there it's what happens when you try to do a meet in Boh hunk West Virginia that's how things are around here they don't really take care they don't they don't give a crap NOP this is the flattest Road in West Virginia yeah probably there's that Maryland 51 sign is this the unsigned turn yeah you see how there's no like oh yeah dead end yeah but there's no like sign here to say that this is Green Spring Road going this way it would it would really suck if a freight train started rolling through there that could take a while uh yeah I think you're right dude if Steve Albert was in the car with us right now he'd have a fit I know I'll spot you some of the toll money when we're back whatever that was you know you took three trips so I had to do what I had to do to document this bridge for the channel yeah I would hope that tractor trailers don't try to cross this thing I'm not sure that would go very well no this thing does not look like all right okay this time I'll ask you going to you going to ask her this time yeah all right there you go man step up to the plate you got this hey guess who it is are you trying to do something or uh we are documenting this bridge for our YouTube channel so it's like a dash cam thing that we're doing yep I have a question now given given that this is a uh a privately owned Bridge what would happen or is there any enforcement mechanism if someone were to just drive past the toll booth not that he has the same idea not that I have the the intention of doing so you've had it happen yeah right now somebody else and yeah it's not fair to especially with the one to get classes for you know this person or that person to D by yep so is it a is it an issue is it a significant problem for you yeah yeah yeah I wouldn't think that that would have been a problem around here but that's it is yeah we've got it Pino certain it is so I don't know what they okay thank you we're just curious yeah I mean what are we supposed to do when somebody will come up and say wello so it doesn't have to P why you know it's getting to that wow yeah that big of an issue that's crazy know who it is huh yeah all right well thanks for chatting knowledge it turns out that if you do want to drive across this bridge without paying you can do so they can't really see why didn't we just get that idea in the first place they can't they can't really do anything about it apparently yeah that they don't have cameras up right yeah see that look at you man I'm proud of you man asking the tough questions yeah have you ever considered a career at the Washington Post you might have to think about that might have to yeah all right all right we made it to the CN Canal our last stop of the day before we head back to Cumberland let's see yeah we're down here and we got to go all the way up to Cumberland which is up there now sure uh-oh boo oh I'm getting out of here before Mark gets out of here oh I ain't getting stuck behind him again I I don't think there would be a chance to pass him this time I think you're right so so you know what I'm taking that chance right now after about one mile turn left on Oldtown Road North take your whole horse to Oldtown Road ride it till you can't no more that's not what it says in there that's not what it says in there okay I was going to say I don't remember putting that in there oh left on Opa first boy it's a good thing we got out of that Toll House when we did yeah yeah man we'd still be there right now probably she had so much to say we you know what we'd still be learning how to make applesauce yeah you know man that was intense I mean when she said she was going to give us like the crib notes version of that kitchen room I thought maybe we'd be in there for like 2 minutes she had us in there for like another like five know minutes well that's after I said the first time I'm like yo can we like go like oh let's go into the kitchen let me show you how to yeah oh my goodness yeah that was that was way more than I thought we were going to get I mean I appreciate that she's really enthusiastic about like keeping that place um maintained and alive and like oh yeah yeah abely open open as like an attraction and especially because it really does have historical value in like the history of our hobby sure yeah well that's right that's why that's why we wanted to stop there that's why we wanted to stop there right you you wanted to learn everything there was to know about baking bread though right well you know some some some of the things we learned some of the things we learned I feel like you know maybe we could have gone without I think that's putting it generously I I get your Drift But no like the history of like we did learn a lot about of the toll road and all that yeah that's that's really neat stuff we did get a lot of of good stuff yeah yeah so I am glad that we stopped there no question just it's just like come on man like I'm I'm trying to Y we got like a we got a Travel Group here and I'm like I I don't I don't really want to learn how to make like West Virginia style Mac and chees like I mean that's just not my thing you know no it's not what we're here for today no this is the for stop on a long tour we got about 45 minutes to Sunset so yeah we do have enough time to do a little bit of a walk that's if that's what people want to do yeah I would I'm game a got nothing better to do right I'm well I don't I don't want to speak for you you know so I don't maybe maybe I do have something better to do maybe you do you know I I don't I was a little bit quick to judge you there and that's my fault but uh well I I did actually book a hotel room tonight in in Cumberland so I actually am going to be hanging around here oh so party at your place party at my place beautiful I like that all right yeah you know what that means right no yeah we can this way so there's The Pedestrian Mall over there okay so you wanted Mall yeah yeah so they taken out the street and yeah so here you can also see some of the work they're doing on the bridge here obviously a multi-stage thing that's going on Wow unrelated to what's going on there but they're happening at the same time so what this is the bridge rehab yeah this is your basic uh reab job I going back there's that PR yeah right between a railroad too yeah this has got to be a logistical headache at times CU as we've seen this this railroad is very active oh yeah so 100 trains per hour [Music] yeah but that is probably not got under the se but it's not it's not a caterpillar so it's kind of that's that's the cheap version of yeah yeah that happened in Pittsburgh Rec you want to try your hands in operating in the back the bottom or street is have you ever done that or I once I want to see if the skills enough to lift up one my late father after that kind of but it's not that all right well we're going to wrap up here it's Sunset we're going to have some
