Mariners Postgame Recap: No Magic (65-65)

and here I thought Dan Wilson was going to turn this team around what a shame no I'm just kidding Dan knows more than anybody you can't win him all still frustrating loss over for the Seattle Mariners what is up what is going on everybody welcome back and welcome into the Seattle Mariners postgame recap Mariners dropped this one this afternoon 4 to3 to the San Francisco Giants they fall back to 500 on the season um Houston does lose they remain four and a half back in the American League West before I dive into this game do me a favor comment your thoughts down below please hit that like button much you know a game that I never know and yes we're all rocking the sonics Jersey today I just so everybody knows because there was a little controversy when I said I wanted to wear the Griffey jersey with the autog you all rightfully said not to this one is not autograph just so everybody knows there is no autograph on this jersey okay anyways um I you know I never know these games are tough for me and I don't know what I want my emotion I don't even know what my emotional response is I haven't really had it yet and by the time I figure it out there'll be another game tomorrow you know on one hand you know you win tomorrow you win the series and and that's really what should be the goal is winning a series that that should be the goal every time you go out no matter who you're playing but the barers are in a position where they've got to do more than just win series they're going to have to get some sweeps if they want to get back into this thing um you know the Astros lost so you don't gain you don't lose ground but you had a chance to gain ground today um you know Dan's not going to win every single game it's going to take more than just two days to get this culture fixed and I've been very critical of Scott the last few weeks and months of his tenure you know I'm not going to jump on Dan it's his second game as a manager and I don't think he really did anything wrong today so you know I can't go on some rant about the team lifeless or anything like that they're even if they are lifeless it's going to take Dan a while to really get in and get the culture changed uh the way he wants to get it done so and and there's no guarantee Dan's gonna be the guy I I hope he is I think he's got a good mindset for and I think um he's got a real good um feel for the game and I thought so in his press conference yesterday I like just the way he spoke felt very um very real a little bit more little better feel than Scott had for lack of a better term but you know so I can't really rant on that I can't go you know this is a managerial decision obviously there's still things FR an officewise players wise and everything and there was definitely some frustrating moments today this also wasn't a game where your pitcher went eight shutout Innings and he didn't win Kirby was not very sharp today as well uh you know kind of the offense that we if you remember my early postgame Recaps in the season where they'd get some base runners just couldn't deliver one of those today for the Mariners offense where they put the base runners on they certainly had opportunities they weren't completely overmatched but the Giants pitching but again just missing that big hit Randy Ros Arena had a few opportunities for it and then listen you know I know people don't want to hear there was a little bit of I think bad luck today too I thought Kirby was babed a little bit a lot of balls just kind of falling in against him not an excuse he wasn't good enough but that happened I don't know how that yky home run got out of T-Mobile um that looked kind of like a Yankee Stadium home run in fact it would have been out at Yankee Stadium there's a shocker Um T-Mobile and I think Houston was the only other Park uh that that would have been a home run and so w shock now got out I mean it was hit 105 it was hit well I I didn't think it was going to be caught it thought it be more of a double off the- wall um and it got out then you have Julio's double in the seventh which is a ground roll double and rley has to stay at third that doesn't bounce over I think rayley scores I think Julio might have got to third I think it would have been possible and then maybe the rose Arena ground out which was a frustrating at bat but might have tied the game in that situation so and maybe Randy approaches it differently if if a walk in his spot in that seventh inning ties the game um so you know in the ninth inning Ryan Walker my gosh that guy's lights out now he should be down tomorrow please please be down tomorrow um so I can't get on them too much for not scoring against him but in the end still frustrating right because his team is they're sort of hanging in a little bit of a limbo for me right now where you know I've talked about the apathy setting in but then they make the managerial move I I kind of get fired up I like I like Dan um I think he can be a good fit team yesterday has that emotional come from behind Victory you know you cut that Astros lead to four and a half and four and a half feels a lot better than five and a half it just sounds better has a different ring to it and it's a different number obviously but you know what I mean there's just there's certain numbers that just you know it's one game different it feels like a lot more and that's one of them so you know you kind of get back invested I'm still invested in the team 100% um but you know it's also like until they show it you know this is kind of what the team's been all season it's hard for me to go how is this happening this is you know there's 32 games left and this kind of been the team all season um you know certainly they've had better pitching and the offense has had worse performance but just kind of coming up a little bit short kind of been their MO all year um are they still in this race yeah they are they're certainly mathematically in it Houston plays Baltimore tomorrow then goes to Philly and they're going to face wheeler and Nola so you have a chance um with the next four at home for you as well to to gain some ground here but I also just don't believe in this team a ton right now to do it so I'm just not shocked at these results right now and like even yesterday truthly was probably a game they should have lost now we get caught up in it it's a great win and I'm not trying to be super negative right now but what's the Marino's record they're 500 do I think they're a little bit better than that yeah I think they should be but how much more you know what are we talking here two games over 500 you know not a ton but at the same vein if they were two more games over 500 they'd be two and a half back of Houston so it's really just a whirlwind of emotions with this team right now because are still in the race they're pretty mediocre so it's hard to have the high expectations um but I still think the roster is better than the mediocrity they made a managerial change so I can't really you know I can't do a Scott rant again here the only thing I'll say is honestly I think they probably should have canned Scott after the angel series I I that was kind of the first post game I had where I really dove into like it's time it's time and I think they should have done it there would have given Dan a little bit more time to work with the guys with them in contention I know the actually played pretty decent after that angel series but looking back on it now if they miss out they do play better I just don't think Dan had enough games to really get these guys you know listen it takes time like Dan can't fix everything overnight Edgar's not gonna fix the hitting overnight uh Pete Woodworth really doesn't need to fix the pitching although the last two nights it hasn't been great funny enough Taylor Saw s Trent Thorton great tonight go figure um you know one Dan's got to instill his culture and that's going to take a while that's the first thing com in not midseason but late in the season makes that difficult you're not going to change everybody's approach overnight they're not they're not going to magically stop striking out and that was always kind of my point when I said Scott wasn't the only problem it wasn't meant as like trying to be a super big defense of Scott it's just there's not a lot that's going to change with 33 games left what you hope is this team can be streaky right we've seen it we've seen the offense have 101 game stretches where they look really good you just hope you have one more of those in there it's met with Houston struggling a little bit and then maybe you can get to that Series in Houston a game back even maybe and take advantage and win it that that's kind of what you're hoping for there's not going to be a dramatic shift in this team you just hope that there's one hot streak in there that can get him over the top a little bit so and that was kind of always my point it wasn't always meant as a defense of Scott service it was just meant more in the vein of like this is not going to be fixed overnight by one person this is going to take a lot of things and it's going to take an offseason it's going to take a spring training for Dan to really get with these guys and figured out so I think he's a good guy for the culture here in the last few weeks um I think you saw those hugs and handshakes last night the notion these guys you know I I I I'm not saying they didn't like Scott but that was kind of always one of my things with Scott too I think he's liked in the clubhouse but man they they were embracing Dan pretty good last night so I think they're I I think even the players are kind of in a sense of relief to get a little new life and blood into that into that Dugout and I like Dan's press conference last night too um he's got a good feel for the game and I think a little bit better than Scott you know Scott would always kind of and listen Scott was here nine years the team was kind of in a free fall I'm Not Gonna Keep bagging on the guy and I truly do wish Scott all the best this is probably the last I'll even talk about scottt for the most time most part here but even the press conference it was either like unacceptable or yeah we'll come out of this what I liked about Dan if you listen to talk about Rogers the submarine pitcher just kind of talking about how hard those guys are to face and what they need to do just feels like Dan has a little bit better pulse on the game game than Scott did um and again part of that could just be Scott's been here nine years again I felt the same thing about Pete Caroll the last few weeks of the season it's like it's the same message and listening to Mike McDonald is very refreshing talking about the defense performance against Tennessee not being acceptable you know it's just kind of a different tone and refreshing to hear that so I think Dan's going to do good here um but you can't win them all so let's get into the box score here break this one down uh George Kirby four and two thirs nine hits three run three earn one walk Three KS you know like Dan said in the PO post game you know gave them a chance to win the game certainly but was not good enough I don't know Dan didn't say that was not good enough that's that's me adding that not a good enough start from George Kirby that is now two out of three starts for George that have been subpar and you need better if you are going to make a run at this thing you know one thing I harped on in April and May is your stars have got to be the Stars you know some of the role players were playing pretty well early in the year um and it was it was the guys you expect to be the best were not the best um and you need that George Kirby should be one of your better players on this team someone you can rely on to give you a quality start I know it's not going to happen every time but we're into August getting into September here we still in the race George has got to be better than he's been now he's certainly better tonight than he was against Detroit or today I should say by far but still not a good enough start now I will say I thought he got a little bit bab bipped around in this one but again as I say in a lot of videos B doesn't mean you were good just because you give up blue pits doesn't mean you pitched well either do I think Kirby could have ended up with better results sure I think there's you know a universe where this was a five and two-thirds one-on Run start I still didn't think he was super sharp though either so both can be true just as hitters can get lucky and also be good um pitchers can be unlucky and still not Pitch well and that was George Kirby today Char Gua went inning in a third one walk one strike out thought Dan made the right call going to Chara in that situation uh it was 3-2 in the fifth inning with the runner on I think that's a perfect spot where you go to shua to kind of put out the fire a little bit we've seen Scott kind of go to more of the Trent thortons in those situations um you know and I thought that was the right call to go to Chara first out of the bullpen you know you got to keep the game there before you can claw away you can't save the relievers for Innings that don't exist um so I thought that was a good call by Dan Wilson to go with sha Austin vote did give up the run the home run to yky which again you know again there's an example of Lucky and good I was talking about I think he's lucky that that got out because I didn't think that had any chance but it was clearly hit hard it should have been at least a double so it wasn't like it was a bad piece of hitting by yky not like he popped the ball up and it got out of the park it just I didn't think it was you know going to be a home run off the bat essentially so uh you know frustrating when that happens too it' be nice if the Mars could hit some of those out they play in two mobile 81 games they they're welcome to hit some down the line there at 310 feet and hit him out as well would love to see it nice inning from Trent Thorton shut out ending with the walk and a strikeout you know listen with Jimmy Garcia I'm assuming probably going to be down for the year haven't heard anything on Santos we know Brash is out for the year any reliever that can step up is GNA help Colin Snider's done it if Trent thoron can find a little bit of what he had earlier in the year where again I I will say thoron was pretty good early in the year he wasn't perfect he's got flaws then he just really nose dived a little bit so we can find a little bit of that it is going to help this team and same with Taylor Sao who threw his probably best inning in a long time uh with a shutout ninth inning so you know those guys can at least get back to their average you know their career average or something like that it's going to help this team down the stretch it's all Hands-On deck so nice outings from those guys uh offensively um nine walks is really good again just couldn't get that big hit only four hits today um they did strike out 12 times again though with the nine walks I can live with that but just missing that big hit um you know let's go back to that seventh inning I think a little unlucky that I's uh double goes over the wall but then the bases are loaded with one out for Randy Ros Arena it's four to2 gets ahead against Hicks three and0 in the count listen I don't not against three and0 green lights because if Randy hits one out there three and0 nobody's complaining about the swing no one's going Randy what are you doing the issue wasn't that Randy swung three and 0 the issue is that Randy swung at a three-oh pitch that was hitable and grounded into what probably should have been double play good Hustle by Randy to beat it out he need a great diving catch in the first inning as well also a game yesterday I thought Ros Arena's effort did not look great it was there today it wasn't an effort issue but you've got to be better if you're going to swing that bat three and0 you gotta make sure you're going to do damage against the pitch um because otherwise you've got a pitcher on the mount and Hicks that was struggling to throw strikes I mean you might take two of them there tying runs on Deck make it four to three and and who knows on one out then he's in panic mode pitching you've got him on the ropes that's when you get those base hits and knock those guys out and win the game so again just kind of one hit short for this ball Club but a really really brutal at bat there for Randy and then he comes up in the ninth again Walker's been ridiculously good I'm not going to get on him too much for grounding out against Walker thankfully I think Walker will be out tomorrow which will help um but still frustrating uh result there for Randy grounding out really waiting really waiting for that big moment from Randy you know when he first came he had some big hits but you know one and maybe I'm wrong this I always felt watching Ray's games that he was a really clutch hitter um and a big spot he came through and just hasn't really done it yet for the Mariners I know sometimes when guys come to new places they can press a little bit they want to impress the fans in the team but we don't have time to really worry about that emotional stuff you've got to get it done if this team wants any any slim chance to catch Houston this year so um certainly still a disappointing resolve from Brand said good hustle and I don't mind swinging three and 0 but man that thing better be in the Gap you cannot roll over a ball to Short Stop and hit what should have been a double play essentially so you know again he's got the speed to beat it out but man frustrating there I also saying that inning so they intentionally walked palanco Mitch hanar was up with the bases loaded two outs the first pitch to hanar I think dval had come in for hanar um I think he actually came in for palanco walked him I don't remember I don't remember when they went for to Deval it was definitely dval against hanar first pitch was like 95 and almost looked like it almost hit Mitch's elbow pad listen I it is none of it is for none of us to say here on our couches and go oh hey Mitch you got to let that hit you I would encourage any one of you to go out there and have 97 come right at you and don't duck out of the way with that said Mitch just lean That Elbow guard out there a little bit maybe just a little bit you got the guard on let that one hit you I'm just saying like I I'm never gonna rip a player for that because again if I had 97 coming anywhere near my face I'm throwing the bat and running out of there like a chicken but I it's also like man just put that elbow out there a little bit and it would have been tied um just a little thing just more of a funny observation than actual critique of the team but a rough F bat there for Mitch too gets head two- 0 thought he had a pretty hitable slider uh two- 0 and two- one missed them both and grounded out again the team just close but not getting that big hit which you know hopefully Edgar can help with some of that but it's but it's on the players right they've gota got to find a way to deliver and that's something I said even with scottt like despite the frustrations the guys still have to come through and deliver there's only so much managers uh can do can do for you um Victor robless leaves the game with the finger injury luckily exray were negative probably out a couple days uh Luke rayy o for three did have two walks in an RBI and actually hit the ball pretty well in that first at bat off Snell coming up 0 and2 against him and drove it in the gap conforto of course makes a dive and catch because every team has 20 gold Glovers when they face the Mariners um it's not like the Mariners offense can't do enough struggling themselves the other team has to contribute that um you know and they did a good job against Snell chase him after three Innings didn't get a hit but they didn't need to they got six walks but another at bat you know Turner came up with the Bas is loaded in the second inning you know and after the walks to Julio and ay to tie it and a three- pitch strike out just this was one of those games just that's how you could summ it up so close one hit one big hit and they win this game super super fr the more I talk about actually the more frustrating this game becomes for me um Julio was one for three with the RBI what you oh the walk he had an RBI walk and uh excuse me one for three with the double an RBI walk and two walks total for Julio so on base three times uh good to see for Julio Rodriguez um you know sorry my my C my camera went out there for a second threw me off so good game from Julio good to see him drive the ball into the Gap uh might be his first or second extra base hit since coming back it's been kind of the mo for Julio all year just hasn't put a lot of balls into the Gap I think it might have been a triple Julio's um ankle injury looks 100% healed he looks good out there so again like I said yesterday this team wants to have any shot at catching Houston they're going to need a Julio hot streak uh Justin Turner One for four the walk had that base H the ninth inning which was nice kept kept the game alive um I don't remember his walk in this one but I think it was in the seventh inning on base twice for Turner but again he had a big spot in third inning couldn't come through canzone pinch ran for him a rose Arena was one for five um he did have the double which was good good to see Rose with extra base hit but kind of same with Turner in the big moment just couldn't come through did have the RBI in the ground out um but needed a better result in that at bat Palanka was over for two but did score row with two walks uh hanar rough game over for four Dylan Moore was over for two with the walk Roos pinched hit 0 for one Garver 0 for two with a walk Cal struck out in his pinch hit revos was one for four so you know good job drawing the walks they found ways to get on base um but just couldn't couldn't get that big hit to finish it um a little bit of the microcosm of the season um I will talk about I do want to add one thing just we're talking about managers and some things you know Dan did go to Thorton and saon one-run games saw some people being kind of critical of that tonight and I would have defended Scott on it too tonight there wasn't a lot of options out there you know Munoz was you know was warming up if they took the lead but probably wanted to stay away from back toback you know Snider's probably down after throwing a lot of pitches in the 10th there um and then after that with Garcia out you used Char Gua when I thought you should have used him you used V in a spot that I thought was fine in a one-run game there wasn't much else out there I don't know who else is in the bullpen Thorton s Muno Snider am I missing spy's back there still but he pitched yesterday and truthfully spy's not been great this year so I didn't have a problem uh with how Dan managed the bullpen today it was a little bit of a tough spot and I thought he did fine I'm I'm not wild about thoron or sa in one run games but now with Garcia down that they're going to have to there's and I would have said the same thing if Scott were still managing the team he's he's you're going to have to use those guys in some situations um just you hope they pitch better when tomorrow win a series uh hopefully Houston loses to Baltimore you know if you can make up a game each series here you feel pretty good and then you know Houston goes to Philly hopefully the Phillies can do some damage take two out of three from Tampa maybe get this thing to two and a half three you know get me to September 1st two and a half three and a half back and you
