my name is Mike and that's my brother John hey we've been fans of this team for years it's our third season here at lock on Angels it's a pleasure and a privilege to be talking Angels baseball with you Monday through Friday every single weekday through the season on today Today's Show we're going to recap that weekend against the Seattle Mariners the Angels were swept Mike you said something at the top of the show you said the super Halo Bros were big mad I don't feel mad you're not mad I don't feel mad wait a second of of the super Halo Bros you're the one that always gets you're the one that I have to text and say hey can you delete that tweet you're the one you're the one that gets mad of the two of us you get big mad so I put that in there for you you're letting me down now John you're letting me down well as we get into recapping the weekend I'll explain to you why I'm not mad but let's start with game one y man uh in case you don't know and and and longtime Angel fans know what being Buttercup is and I've had a few people ask us before like what is buttercup it's they used to play why do You Build Me Up Buttercup at the seventh inning stretch and then the Angels would somehow blow the game or lose the game or the blow pen would come in and and so that's like it was like a cursed song right they don't play it anymore but the term Buttercup has stayed and Mike this felt like the ultimate Buttercup even though they weren't in the lead after a Joell Grand Slam and he ties the game and you've already had a home run robbery from Mickey moniac it's 4-4 and then the very next inning yeah Matt Moore gave up the winning run yeah that was this game Johnny you summarized it well it was a 5-4 loss on Friday and the angels seemed to have a lot of these games this season a lot of one run games that they're in and if they could get just one hit or if they could pitch one more inning then they would be able to continue to get one more win or get some momentum one more out right do something right and that was that was the epitome of this game so the Mariners got on the board early with three runs in the first against Jose Sorano they added another one in the fourth now you mentioned it Mickey moniac in the bottom of the fourth had a great catch over the wall robbing a home run and it was beautiful it was great to see that's why he's on this team right now because his offense is just non-existent but he's playing some good defense but the Angels they finally did something in that top of the seventh John they only had three hits up until that point two of them by the way by Matt th who wasn't supposed to be in the lineup at that point not even supposed to be here right right and so then so moniac leads off the inning with a strikeout Taylor Ward walks Willie Calhoun Double D doubl and Ward goes to Third and then polar grounds out on a fielder's choice and John Ward came home and it it was just one of those moments where it it didn't seem like he needed to break for the plate because that ball was not hit very hard it was a routine ground ball it felt like they were really kind of just forcing the issue in that moment were they not yeah this just the epitomizes Angel's baseball right now is just you're either forcing the issue you're getting a bad read you're making a bad decision you're making the wrong decision um and and that just seems to be what's plaguing this lineup right now and I I I'm G to bag on him a little bit here but I I like Taylor Ward but Taylor Ward is your star in this lineup he needs to be the one that's leading the way and he just doesn't seem to be leading the way in the smart like IQ moments and that didn't seem like a smart baseball play it seemed like he was really trying to force the issue plus he's not fast and so it wasn't like you were going to get into Home Plate anyway so there's this out right ohappy walks and then Seattle changes pitchers and so Joe Adell pinch hits for the only guy that has two hits in the lineup That is Matt th but Johnny he hits a pinch hit Grand Slam first pinch hit Grand Slam since here's a name for you Alberto Cayo May 26 2012 a Felix Hernandez amazing amazing right it's hilarious to me that it's Alberto kayosa it's like I mean obviously kyoso is gonna be somebody off the bench but it's not like Mark Trumbo or or Albert P you know right Alberto kyoso I know I know looking at the names of all the people that they listed to that have had pinch hit Grand Slams for the Angels I recognized like two of them and it was all people that were random guys off the bench Johnny this hit was Adele's first because he had just gone one for 32 with 15 strikeouts when he came up to pinch hit so he was two for 33 but this was a big hit and it was a lot of momentum lot of excitement but then as you mentioned Matt Moore comes in in the bottom of the eighth inning and then it was not great after that right yeah he gave up the game-winning home run to Tai France and it's just so frustrating to me now the ninth inning Kevin polar gets picked off and they lose and he was on first base took off a little too early Mike it's it here's a couple of things here and this is why I weirdly am not angry and and the reason why is you see that Jose Sorano is still hit and miss yeah this game way too many sinkers up in the zone and they were taking advantage of it and you you give pitches like that and professional Big League hitters are going to hit those around right and so that's why there were the four runs I think the frustrating part is Joe Adell has been struggling with his K rate once again he's had a April May was unkind to him and now it just seems like they need to make another adjustment there but the thing is you've got Jose Sorano you know keeping it at four runs not his best outing you've got Mickey moniac robbing that home run you got Joe Adell coming in hitting that grand slam and who gives up the game it's it's the veteran reliever that you had last year who was really good and then the year before that in Texas he was really good Matt Moore is not been great this year no and and that's the problem with relievers they're so volatile and then Kevin po not going to say anything bad about po but getting picked off at first base is just like a silly mistake that don't get me wrong many of the young angels have done as well and and a loss like this again is is heartbreaking yeah when you're fighting to get back into the game but to me it's like these young guys are learning I say we always say they're learning how to win well they're learning how to lose too because it's it's not anything that they're doing now there are games that we'll get to here in a second where it is the young guys running into outs and losing games and things like that but to me that game on Friday it was like well it's our veteran reliever who we're supposed to be able to count on surrendering the the game-winning hit and so this is the season this is this is what it is yeah and and so my frustration was not so much with what the young guys are doing or or what have you or the fact that they lost this game it's like this are are we not expecting this this season like we we came in with no expectations and there are a lot of areas that coaching staff is working on needs to improve we'll talk about deur in the next segment things like that but anytime and and I'll mention this like I see uh Kiren Paris on Sunday didn't slide uh or didn't make the decision to slide until way too late in the second base and the first thing I see when they come back from the commercial break is Eric Young Senior talking to Kyon Paris saying hey you gotta run through that you gotta slide through that and and so that's that's what's going on ladies and gentlemen we we sit here and go why isn't the coaching staff improving this team because these guys are kind of dumb like no offense yeah what I'm saying is like they're not Taylor Ward not making great baseball decisions uh K Paris not sliding not a great baseball decision and so the learning is happening in the 2024 season and it's June it's two months in I'd love to see where we are a year from now and if they're still making these dumb decisions and these dumb choices and these dumb decisions and and outs on the bags and whatnot that's a problem yeah but I'm I'm just like this is this is the learning experience this is what these guys are so I guess the reason why I'm not mad number one they're playing the first place Mariners who have an incredible pitching staff right and they're you know what's funny is they they just fired who they called their offensive coordinator and the hitting came alive this weekend um we also have an offensive coordinator which is weird but but that's the thing like they're in first place and we're not and it's those momentto moment decisions that the angels are making on the bases or not making the singular play that would have gotten somebody out of the inning and we'll talk about that on Sunday with Griffin canning and Zack Netto and things like that that's the difference between first place teams and last place teams Mike and and to me 2024 we are watching The Learning Experience and and everybody who's upset like why these guys are professionals yeah they are and they're there but they are obviously don't have the knowhow and and didn't get ingrained with the knowhow they don't have the factory installed equipment to tell them Taylor W that's a bad decision don't run on that play stuff like that and and so to me I'm not frustrated because we're watching The Learning Experience that's that's why I think I came away from this weekend it's like okay it's a first place team with a really good pitching staff and we are none of those things that's that's where I've landed this week yeah you mentioned something about them learning and about them not being aware of of situations we've had an opportunity to interact with one of the Angels coaches and we've seen that Angel's coach interact with some people in the social media world and one of the narratives that has been thrown out there is that there's a lot of undoing and and a lot of things that have been instilled in these guys that they have to undo as they're instilling new things something that you brought up on this show and that I think is what we're seeing at play in some of these really boneheaded mistakes and and running mistakes because when you have somebody who who is not necessarily been told hey here's here's kind of the philosophy on the bases the last few years and now the philosophy is hey we're gonna take that extra base we're gonna steal bags we're gonna right they're kind of in that in between if you put it between a a one and a f a one and a 10 they're a five right there are moments where it's going to win for them but then there's still some undoing that has to happen and it's unfortunate because you're right and fans are right these are major league players that should get this these are major league players that should understand this and the fact that they don't the fact that they are not connecting their their their head to their body or to the situation is is pretty remarkable and it doesn't seem like it's just one player it seems like it's all players like everybody like everybody's affected yeah you can say well it's the young guys doing young things that's why I would call out Taylor Ward because you're 30 bro like you've been around for a while you've been around some of the great players and you're still making those boneheaded decisions you're still not running the bags or playing defense in a way that leads way and maybe that's just not how he's wired but that's what this team needs right now and nobody is ready to step up and do that you know what they need they need Tommy fam who threw a fit yesterday on the field against the Brewers right why that's why trout wanted him I was say that's why Mike Trout wanted him I think honestly they need somebody like that they need somebody that's going to lead the way and and say that this is this is unacceptable and here's what we're going to do I get that the coaching staff has a job to do seems like they're doing that job but I think that the angels are just a group of guys that really haven't developed to their full potential and are playing scared and are playing intimidated that really is what I saw this weekend yeah it there are lots of indications that you see that the coaching staff is trying and and that's the biggest thing is the last couple of years there was an embargo on being able to speak to Media or coaches or anything like that and so it is nice to see coaches sharing like yeah it's a process like this is a this is a learning process there's a lot of undoing there's a lot of things these bad habits these guys have gotten into a lot of bad things that they've been picking up and and whatnot and so all of that to say I I I guess I just I looked at this weekend and I went this is The Learning Experience hop aboard the Angels Learning Experience 2024 because that's what this is and that's what this feels like and so I'm not mad and you know me I'm I'm a big Mariners hater most of the time but yeah they're in first place like like I'm not gonna hate on this team that you know did what they did because this is this is where the angels are at this is where the young guys are at this is 2024 people and and I liked what you said it wasn't I shouldn't say dumb and I didn't mean that in a malicious way but it's like yeah bonee headedness is like a light and playful way to say like they're not making very good decisions out there and it it sucks I just gotta do better and he said that I think each time after each of his last four or five starts Johny Demmer was struggling in this game three and twoth thirds Innings pitched five earn runs including a grand slam and the pitch that he threw to JP Crawford was a cookie it was a cookie he crushed that pitch and no locked on every dayer Ethan who is a Mariners fan I don't want a JP Crawford Mariners Jersey even though he texted me and said how about I buy you one so I was I that's the other part hard part about this weekend was the annoying Mariner fans was like Hey we're a bad team I get it but man go away please so I must have I must have avoided all of that this weekend I did well not big mad that's probably it yeah exactly so Reed was optioned we'll talk about that in a minute but Ben Joyce was called up which I think was a really good move Johnny deur and his story since March of 2023 is really fascinating and locked on Hall of Famer Brent Maguire tweeted out some really good stats why don't you read those he said dmer from March to August of 2023 had a 5.01 ER a 440 FIP in 124 Innings that's Fielding independent pitching what the pitcher can control himself demmer's from September 23 through the first four starts of 24 1.52 erra and a 2.19 FIP in 47 and 1/3s innings when he got off to this start this season Mike we were like oh that's our guy that's want yeah he wanted that 20 win season and he was starting out really well but then the last eight starts before being optioned at 8.93 erra a 5.95 Fielding independent pitching in just 40 and one3 innings that is brutal somebody asked us uh on Twitter I believe hey super Halo Bros why deur and and why didn't they do this with sandal well sandal doesn't have a 8.93 ER in his last eight starts that's the why we talked a couple of days ago about Logan o hoppy and him taking a lot of the blame for the starting pitcher struggles I and and I appreciate that he's taking the blame I think a lot does fall on deur but here's an interesting stat and our friend Jared Jared Tims tweeted this out he said Logan Oh hoppy when he's catching Reed demmer's 10 games 52 and two-thirds Innings pitched a 530 erra 56 strikeouts and 16 walks Matt th three games 10 Innings 1045 ra 14ks and 11 walks Johnny I think that this is a much needed move because Reed has not been himself he looks scared intimidated he looks like he isn't sure what he's throwing he's not sure about the location he looks confused I I mean that pitch to JP Crawford it's interesting to me that they are struggling with strike one because they don't want to get crushed that pitch to J JP Crawford was a or J JP JC JP J thank you uh I'm talking too fast if you if you forget our friends at lockdown Mariners said the P stands for power after his uh that's good his Grand Slam yeah so that I mean what that pitch was an underhanded softball pitch I mean that thing just looped in and you you knew he was GNA Crush that and it was a it was a 3-2 pitch he had him on the ropes and then he threw three straight balls and then he gave up that grand slam and he just looks completely lost and so I think this was a really good move by the Angels it it was necessary and I think I personally would have done it sooner but this was you know the straw that broke the Campbells back here's something that I find interesting now it all started with a tweet from a good friend Adam rank on Twitter said my daughter and I were at the Reed Detmer no hitter I was it was the best night since the World Series it's never been the same since I hope Reed returns stronger Gooby tweeted back Mark Gob Isa I believe in this kid Adam things can change quickly for him trust in yourself changes everything Mike that line I know Gooby is positive I know that he's inspirational and things like that but the truth is I think it does come down to trusting yourself with Reed Demmer because here's the thing the velocity on his pitches hasn't changed the spin rate on his pitches hasn't changed it's it's not a mechanical issue other than location and where he's putting the ball so it might be a throwing issue it might be a dropping the elbow is you know what I mean but yeah the truth is is he isn't setting pitchers up to get them out with strike three on a slider away or a curveball or things like that and Gooby constantly hammers home on the broadcast it's his confidence he's not confident in what he's throwing out there yeah and so when I look at the numbers and I look at everything involved with the pitches themselves the science and the data behind the pitches nothing's changed it's not as if his forcing fastball ticked down in velocity saw that issue with Griffin canning at the beginning of the season now Griffin canning's fastball velocity went up and it's made his other pitches better but with demmer's it's confidence and its location and he's just struggled so much now something interesting to pay attention to here he struggled the deeper that he went into the game yeah pitches one through 25 there was a 194 batting average 20 strikeouts and seven walks in the games that he's thrown but then pitches 26 through 50 357 average less KS same amount of walks interesting to see that as the game goes on uh and that second and third time through the rotation has been an issue for Reed Demmer yeah you know what's interesting about confidence confidence can come with success the problem is is he hasn't had much success it makes sense why he's lacked confidence but you have to go out there and you have to be confident that I'm going to throw strikes and I've got really good stuff and deur does have really good St stuff and he can throw strikes and this is where the lack of clarity for this Angel organization is a detriment to them because there's been a lot of conversation like hey send him down and bring up like a Kenny Rosenberg and bring up but demmer's is 24 and deur is a potential like maybe three four maybe even a two right like he's a potential strong piece and a rotation but when you don't know what you're trying to achieve if it's a building year or rebuilding year or learning year or if you're trying to win if you haven't clarified that for your organization no matter what the stats say then you're not sure what you're going to do with these players and so sending him down was a wise decision because he needs to learn it was on Saturday AJ Pinsky said on the broadcast on Fox that learning at the major league level is the most difficult thing to do in any sport no matter where you're at you can't jump from college right to the MLB and be a super success you can in football and you can in the NBA and you can in some cases in the n L I know that shaunell and neetto are there they're not successful right it's G it's taking them some time to learn and that's the problem with this Angel organization is they just don't know what they're doing with these guys they're throwing them right into the fire and telling them to figure it out and I'm I've been I've been an advocate of like yeah let's let him learn at the major league level but it's obvious for Reed Demmer specifically that it's just been so difficult for him like he hasn't been able to do what he can do and maybe it's because he does lack that confidence and so you haven't go to Triple A to work out some things and my my guess would be that he doesn't stay there very long but if I'm if I'm in the organization if I'm leading this I'm keeping Reed there until September I'm letting him have a good long run so that he can gain his confidence back and be the pitcher that we know he can be I know that I'm just some nerd on a podcast but I think that that might be the wisest decision for Reed Detmer right now well and in in terms of recapping this game it was an absolute disaster it was N9 nothing Cole Tucker had to come in pitch and things like that um now the angels are undecided on who will fill the rotation spot but they can get by with four starters until about June 15 I imagine that will give Reed enough time to get two starts in and maybe they'll see where he's at and how he does in Triple A they did me like you mentioned bring up Ben Joyce now I know you can look at that ra and go over four well his last eight games or so have been phenomenal and it all hinges on the fact that it's not just that incredible fastball it's the slider and the change up that are also working really well he even went two innings in a row the other night something he hasn't done before in his professional career so Ben Joyce will be interesting to watch if he manages to get into a game out of the pen Johnny you know I love price picks it's America's number one fantasy canning found the velocity on his fast ball he's been much better in fact he had a great month of May and he brought that into this game against the Mariners on Sunday really the only mistake was the Luke reallyy solo home run that Griffin canning made he went six and two3 innings pitched gave up four hits one one earn run on that home run one walk that didn't come until his last inning and four strikeouts on 93 pitches this is the first time he's gotten an out in the seventh inning so far this year but Mike the the issue was there was no offense yeah and they were going up against Luis Castillo obviously veteran pitcher Ace of a staff um somebody that the angels have had relative success against in the past but not on Sunday they went 19 Innings Mike from Saturday until the top of the 9th on Sunday without scoring a run yeah that's what the Angels anemic offense did this weekend and again that goes back to the Mariners having a really good starting staff now surprisingly I picked them to be the best staff in baseball before the season started but surprisingly the Yankee staff without Garrick Cole is Right basically the best staff in baseball right now it would have uh they would have tied the game if the Bullpen right didn't implode they were down one- nothing in the eighth inning yeah and it goes back again to Matt Moore struggled y Lis Garcia hit somebody to walk in a run with the bases loaded they were down one- nothing in the bottom of the eighth the Angels walked two batters they committed an error they brought in a run on Bases Loaded hit by pitch and then allowed a bases clearing double and it was Matt Moore and Luis Garcia yeah um now the angels are 21 and 38 after this it was a three- game sweep five losses in a row this is their third first place team they faced over the course of the last week and a half Mike I I was talking about the issues with the young guys and and the thing is is that the Angels right now have to play Perfect baseball and they can't yeah because these young guys are are in over their head and this is why this is the Angels Learning Experience train of 2024 you can trademark that um and it's it's because it's a it's a Zack Netto err that cost them the game yeah not that not that it was all Zack neto's fault but they should have been out of the inning right Griffin canning or or what have you like it should have been uh over at that point before the Mariners poured on the offense um I think about Kiren Paris again like sliding into not sliding into second or he did it at the last second and that's what C ranom in went out I think of the beginning of this game and and Wayne Randazzo called it out and said well Griffin canning had to get five outs in this inning because Luis rifo slides in front of Netto and doesn't need to do that and tries to throw it the first and then you know it's just like you guys what are you doing what are you doing and then they go into the Dugout and like I mentioned you see e Senor talking to these guys you see Ron Washington talking to these guys like Hey listen in that situation you need to do this you need to do that that's why this is the Angels Learning Experience of 2024 because they are making these very crucial mistakes but it's like it's it's one mistake right it's one mistake that costs you the entire game and that to me has been The Narrative of this Angel team playing imperfect baseball and you're not always going to be perfect in baseball obviously but the problem is is they aren't doing enough in the other areas of the team that allow them to make mistakes that allow them to play imperfect baseball they have to have everything buttoned up and be perfect and they just they just can't especially against a first place team like the Yankees the Guardians the Mariners like this has been a rough stretch but at the same time it's just this is the difference between an angels team and a first place team right well and they've shown when they can play a quote unquote perfect game they've shown to really come through they've had some really good games really good starting pitching from Sorano some really good starting pitching from sandavol from canning from Anderson and then they've had good offensive performances and so they've shown that they can do that but the problem is is that that's going to be an anomaly because how they're wired as a team right now is a team that is on a learning experience right and so you're right that's what happened this weekend really good team bumping into the Angels but the problem will be that we run into not a really good team and we still find ourselves yeah kicking ourselves making mistakes and causing losses for our team the the The Narrative of man this team's got a lot of fight I like that narrative I just I want to say that out loud I I appreciate that a lot of fight in this team the problem is is is that they're fighting themselves as well and and at the end of the day with this team that fight is going to dissipate and they're just going to give up because when they fight and then make one mistake two mistakes and it's really just boneheaded decisions there there's going to be a shift that happens because they're G to be tired especially as they get into the midsummer months where they're just going to go yeah right and I and that's where the management really is gonna have to step up and help them and Coach them to stay focused on this season and continue to develop well we have to going back to the coaching we have to recognize that they they know
