since I uh wore it so locked on every day or Jeff shout out to you for uh the suggestion hey we've been fans of this team for our entire lives uh fortunately and unfortunately sometimes and I'm sure our every dayers know where we stand but uh it is our third season here at lockdown angels and we're here five days a week talking Angels baseball with you every single Monday through Friday on today's show we're going to get into some news about the Angels around the minors around the team around the majors Mike Trout what Arty Marino had to say about this deadline things like that Mike did you see Kai Bush started for the white socks last night against the A's uh reminded me of a lot of the guys who have come up and started for the first time just look like nerves yeah kind of struggling to find the zone that sort of thing but shout out to Kai Bush for getting his first start with the white socks Monday night so that was exciting speaking of Angels pitching Mike let's talk about your boy Reed Detmer you you've been a fan of his for a very long time as of I but you kind of adopted him as your favorite while I I went to Patrick sandal route and at least yours is still pitching but mine is not but let's talk about what's up with Reed and when is he gonna be back yeah he's been out for a bit John when he was sent down here was his stats in the major leagues 3 and six 614 RA in 12 starts 63 innings pitched and he had 70 strikeouts with a 1.4 whip now Barry inright said on Saturday that there's a growing belief that Reed Detmer is almost ready to return to the big leagues he said in my communication with the pitching coach for the bees which is Shane Lux uh that he they think he's ready to co he think think he's ready to come up obviously we want have want him to have a stretch of success he's had two somewhat good starts we want him to have maybe another good start which he said was tomorrow Sunday because he spoke on Saturday so we hope to see him soon now John since they sent him down he's been four and five with a 679 E 10 starts 51 and two-thirds Innings pitched 67 k and a 1.57 whip and that most recent start which was Sunday was three and two3 yeah six hits six earned two walks three KS and three home runs Johnny that's not good it it's basically in line with what he was doing at the majors and if you consider it this way it is a hitters league so that does add it does inflate numbers a little bit but look a 679 erra in Triple A versus 614 in the majors and remember he had a stretch of what was it three or four really good starts before he started struggling this SE season yeah man what what happened like right it's like a a light switch was flipped for Reed Demmer and it's really disappointing he's been working on locating his pitches yep which also means that you know he's gonna put more stuff in the zone and it's G to get hit around because the priority is developing not putting up great numbers now not trying to wash away what he's done in Triple A because ideally you want to be able to do both and yeah he's really with that right now the numbers should be better in tripa than they were at the major league level right and so we know that he's working on some stuff Barry INRI said that the slider was a lot better he's feeling confident down there and right also said that there hasn't been too many changes made to demmer's mechanics we did hear some conversations about that trying to be a bit more quick in his windup he said it's mostly been a matter of get this mentally approaching his pitching and that you see it you see it with a lot of young guys Patrick sandavol included in fact and Wright said a lot of the times it showed up in big situations sometimes it showed up in two strike situations trying to make a pitch too nasty trying throw the fast ball too hard and right by somebody the big thing for Reed is getting two strikes and then all of a sudden it's three and two gosh that's been his career right especially the last few starts in the majors putting guys away when you get there is going to be a work in progress and your command has to improve in order to do that and red also said it's it's more of a mentality of trying to make them hit instead of trying to make them Miss now all of that sounds great but again you can't ignore the fact that reeper's numbers are not great the major league level and at the minor league level so Johnny what what do you do with Reed deur if you're the Angels yeah I don't think you have to do much with him except for if they like the progress he's making if they like you know like he said the the slider looking good but it's the matter of you know you get two strikes and then what are you going to do yeah and so for it to be a a mental thing um a cerebral thing like we've brought up before where you have to kind of read the room read the situation and think about what you just threw versus what you're going to throw next to fool a guy when he's down 0 and2 yeah maybe throw that throw that slider off the Zone a little bit but when you come back with it again do it a little bit closer and made maybe get him to reach so Mike that's the thing is demmer's I won't say that he was like fooling a lot of people when he was up here and it kind of sounds like that might still be the issue but it is good to know that slider that he has is a lot better because we all know that he's messed around with that slider a ton y over his career but what was he 24 is he 24 right now yep I don't know I'm not worried about red Demmer especially because it's not like we're marching toward the postseason sure or anything like that so I think Mike your your timeline might be correct September you said you'd keep them down there yeah until September and I went Michael give me a break Michael and I humbly hang my head because you were kind of correct about that now there is a question about his future and timing and dates and when he could be back if he comes back why don't you get into that for us yeah needs to return to the majors by August 19th in order to have a chance to have the same service time that he would have had before his demotion now the Angels optioned him on June 1st if deur returns by August 19th and then stays in the big leagues the Angels would have him under control for three more seasons before free agency if he comes back on the 20th or later the Angels would control deur for four more seasons deur is going to be arbitration eligible next season as long as he returns by September 10th Johnny what do you think the haers are going to do here they're going to prioritize control over deur or development of deur I don't think it's an or I think it's the same thing I think you can prioritize your control by keeping them down in the minors to keep working on things because that's where the development quote unquote is happening look my concern here was that Barry Enright not to say that wasn't involved but I was like man if you're going to keep Reed Detmer away from Barry Enright down in Triple A is that the best thing for him obviously you don't want him to continue to struggle at triple U I'm sorry at the major league level so that's why he is down in Triple A where you know everything's made up and the points don't matter I'll Who's line but at the same time it sounds like Barry enri is very very much involved with the development like isn't it refreshing to hear from the pitching coach because they're allowed to speak to the media and give interviews and and even enri and I have chatted on our socials before like what a refreshing right way of going about you know handling this kind of stuff so yeah kind of silly that that's where the Angels were in years past but it is nice that and WR is so upfront about stuff so yeah Mike I don't think it's an either or I think it's you can prioritize your control over deur get that extra year of control and continue to develop him now I would question the fact if deur was improving and they kept him down that long to get that fourth year of control yeah I would question that Mike it still sounds like a work in progress to me what about you yeah this might be a godsend for the Angels organization right like they now they don't look bad they can keep him down there and go well he's just not he's just not really improving right and so we got to keep him down there right here here's the thing about Reed you said he's 24 he has he's 24 years old he probably should have never sniffed the majors until about now right and so this is part of his development if he's a brave a Dodger a Yankee an orial he's probably not in the majors as long as he's been I think where Angel fans sit sometimes and there's been a narrative out there like well well is he a bust he's 24 yeah right because at 26 he might actually be really really good at 27 28 he might actually be really really good and so this guy or he could be a bust at those a ages right yeah the reality is is that we just have to let it play out this guy probably shouldn't have been in the majors when he came up to the majors but the Angels were trying to fill their rotation and roll the dice and Get Lucky with these guys and they even tried it this year and you and I had a conversation about that how these guys would have to pitch out of their minds to get the Angels at least to 500 right and they just didn't do that you asked a lot of these young players and I think that that might be heart it not the whole thing but I think that's a slice of the pie when it comes to the mentality of these pitchers is they feel the pressure of needing to perform young guys wanting to play really really well and the reality is Reed's trying to overdo it when he really doesn't need to overdo it at all you got good stuff and so when it's 02 maybe throw one in the dirt but then throw a pitch that perhaps they can make contact with and get a ground ball with a short short stop right I know that the conversation has has been earlier this year they were afraid to get rocked right they were afraid to get hit and so I don't know how you get rid of that mentality outside of just continuing to pound it in their brains and have him learn perhaps staying at Triple A and losing a year and now being controlled for four years might be a really good learning moment for Reed might be a good moment for him to change his mind and go I don't want to be down here anymore it's Salt Lake this sucks I want to be at the big club right and so that might be something that actually can help shift him so far the numbers say that that really hasn't changed yeah it's it's funny to me that all of these questions around mentality and um you know what to do when you have two strikes sorry this thought is just now coming to me so I'm kind of forming it my head I feel it yeah all of this conversation around mentality and and how these guys handle it likee who who who are we constantly talking about deur yeah Sandy yeah can MH who brought those guys into the organization they're Billy eer picks right Billy eer picks Billy eper trades right and so man I know Chase silth has been hurt and he's dealing with elbow issues kind of makes you wonder what he would be like this season if he was healthy yeah uh you think about hey let's make let's make Sorano a starter and look at the way he's thriving and yeah to me it's like is that the difference is is this the is this the equivalent of Billy peer's athletic dudes who can play baseball but maybe don't quite understand baseball is this the equivalent the pitching equivalent of that what do you think well if that's true then it would make sense that dmer would be better at 26 27 and 28 right because yes Taylor Ward's that guy right Joe Adele is starting to get better Jordan Adams has been performing in the minor leagues I didn't give it to Matt th you know like like in some some small form or fashion just seems like the Epler guys have taken a little bit longer to develop and and that goes to show why it's so important to have certain players in the minor leagues and certain players rush them up because they're ready to go obviously Reed was not ready for that yeah I retweeted this yesterday but I don't know if you caught Zack Netto on ML network but if you want to listen to a convers it was him and Mark D Roa yep talking about his swing and and all that stuff listen to Zack Netto talk about it and you could tell this is a kid who's played baseball his entire life he's eat breathed and slept baseball his entire life Mikey said he had even been to a concert yet and and they were like you haven't been to a concert I said yeah because he's playing baseball 247 that if you listen to his words and the way he talks about baseball that's the difference between some of the guys we've gotten in recent years and some of the uh the Billy Epler kind of picks again like athletic guys who might develop a little bit later it takes him a while to understand the game n's doing it at 22 right 23 and with very good reason hey thanks for making lock on Angels your first foul pull to foul pull all that stuff across the league unlocked on MLB it's available on YouTube or wherever you get your podcast it's part of lockdown podcast Network where it's your team every day and speaking of your team the angels in New York against the Yankees 405 Pacific time Mike I heard the weather's a little dicey out there I wish we had some summer storms out here Southern California man I'm burning up you can catch every pitch of the Ang Hometown broadcast on SiriusXM with the sxm app just search Angels Johnny the Angels picked Christian Moore the eighth pick overall in the most recent draft he play they did he played two games with the Inland Empire 66ers and went six for 11 with three extra base hits five runs six rvis including a home run so after two games the Halos are like yeah buddy uh we're gonna we're gonna promot you I was really upset because I thought I I didn't even bring it up to you but it was like hey let's go out to San berino this guy playing a game but they were away for the two games he got into and before they even came home back to sardino he's on the trash pandas now we didn't get a time to even like think about it yeah exactly I gotta I gotta make plans I gotta buy snacks I got right uh so wash said that Moore was a man playing amongst boys like he just was crushing everybody uh Christian Moore said he was shocked at his quick promotion but he acknowledged that he knew the Halos move players up the ranks pretty fast so here's something interesting Johnny August 15th would be the first day that clubs can call up prospects to the majors and have them remain rookie eligible for 2025 angels are off that day and then they play the next day against the Braves at home on the 16th now the big question is should Christian Moore get the N the the Zach Netto Nolan shaa well treatment would he benefit would that be a problem what do you think at this point I don't think that it would be a problem to give him a look I don't know if he necessarily need to do that on August 16th that's in a few weeks here like less than two weeks yeah um so I don't necessarily think that it needs to happen that quickly I'd like to see him get into more trash Panda games where he's currently crushing it there right as well and you might have a better idea of who he is after a few of those games but Mike he that's the big difference here and I I appreciated Jeff Fletcher did a Q&A and kind of highlighted this during the Q&A for the OC Register was that you know Netto and shaunell came from smaller College divisions Christian Moore was playing at the tippy top level right right in college for the for the volunteers so I think that is to say of course he's a man amongst boys that's what they say about our podcast and locked on Angels We're Men amongst boys in the podcast world it's the Beards that's right um so I don't see a problem with bringing him up to give axie I think where I have a problem well it's kind of a problem that doesn't really exist honestly I mean if you look at last year or even yeah I guess it was last year Neto came up the beginning of the season because their shortstop situation slash infield defense was no good right to start 2023 so they're like man we got to fix this and fix it fast and they knew Netto could do that plus Neto was crushing it in the minor leagues I know what did he get into 44 some odd games yeah across the end of 22 and the beginning of 23 but they called him up out of necessity and and Nolan shanell was also kind of a call up out of necessity I don't know if they were hoping they could turn their season around at that point but at that point Jared Wallace was gone I know they had Mike mustakis kind of split in time between third and first so the only thing that I would push back on is is this a out of necessity move or is this a move where hey let's let's give a guy who's crushing it a lookie because I think it could be fun I think it would be interesting I don't think it should necessarily guarantee him a spot yeah next season yeah as much as I would love to see him in 2025 I don't think you make that determination just by the few games he might play at the end of 2024 for you having said that Nolan shanell made quite an impression and they went hey let's make him the first baseman going into 2024 so I don't know there's a lot up in the air the other element to all of this is they were very the Angels were very clear about wanting to get him around Ron Washington and help help him develop you know defensively at second base that's apparently the biggest hole in his game is just the defense but it doesn't even sound like that's that bad either right but if you're gonna get him around Ron Washington you got to do it this year or next year because that's all the time that Ron Washington has on his contract so that would also be an element of rushing him up as well so those are my thoughts I'd love to hear what you think about bringing him up should he get the Netto and shaunell treatment yes absolutely because he has shown he has shown we're done he has shown that he has got great baseball IQ he's a competitor wants to play the difference between him and re Detmer is you can just see it and you can hear it right you can see it and and how he's playing and you can hear it when he talks no disrespect to Reed dmer I think that the Angels need to be wise about who they bring up I don't think that they need to have every single one of their guys develop in the minor leagues because if they're ready to go this team could utilize them and it could be a a great young core at the major league level right and so I think you bring him up give him a look see I also think that if he doesn't come up in the next few weeks I think he gets a spring training non-roster invite just because they want to see and I could see them making a move maybe at spring training I want to see him in real G though John I want to see him if I'm the angels I want to see him go up there and bat against Major League caliber pitching because the question really was like does he have a a hole in his swing and and and you know he's got a lot of power but what will happen when he faces major league pitching now Inland Empire a lot of young guys trying to figure things out yeah the trash pandas League double A that's where we've seen a lot of our young guys go from double A to the major league level because it's more of a pro ball Pro sty style I think Salt Lake the numbers might be a bit grown because in Salt Lake Ken Hira is looking like Barry Bonds right and so I think that that's that's the danger of of Salt Lake so if I'm the Angels I'm bringing him up I want to see what he can do and and that doesn't mean you have to make a commitment to him for next year I would bring him up after a certain date so that he does have rookie eligibility for next year and if he doesn't do well then you give him a non-roster invite you have put you have to put him on the 4man roster if you bring him up but if he doesn't come up give him a non roster invite for spring training see what he does in spring training and let him grow from there but why not because this is a team that again is gonna fall backwards into really good players and utilize those players to the best of their ability and if this is what helps the angels to begin to be be competitive I want this guy's Spirit knowledge and athleticism at the major league level yeah it's going to be interesting to see if there's any issues with his swing or his defense that especially swing right swinging is like that's that's the development that you want to happen in the minor leagues that's where that kind of stuff takes place and but at the end of September or at the end of the season in September you might also be able to do a little work with some of the hitting coaches as well lockdown Angels is brought to you by our friends at FanDuel FanDuel lets you get involved in any all summer long so head to fanduel.com and start making the most out of your summer FanDuel is the official sports betting partner of Major League Baseball Mike Perry minasian joined MLB Network radio had a lot to say about a range of topics regarding the angels of course on everybody's mind top of mind for the Halos was the fact that Mike Trout's injury reinjury of his meniscus was kind of topical at the time so this is what Perry manassian had to say he said anybody that knows Mike Trout knows how much he loves this game knows how much this organization this fan base this team and this building means to him he said he's had a tough four years he's someone who's made made a commitment here and was obviously rewarded for that commitment he made and he wants to live up to that do you believe that do you believe that's Mike Trout's posture according to Perry minasian what do you say yes absolutely and I think what we have to stop doing is Infuse our thoughts feelings and emotions on Mike Trout and what would we do in this situation oh we're gonna demand a trade I don't think that That's Mike drout honestly I don't think it's him at all you know what drives me crazy is why would Mike Trout want to trade so he can be injured on the Phillies right so he can be injured on the Yankees I mean that that's the thing that drives me absolutely insane is people talk about his last four years and oh I can't believe the Angels did this to him and it's like he signed an extension for a lot of money when he could have gone to free agency and probably got more money yeah that's not going to stop the injuries from happening like he's loyal to the team that brought him up because he wanted to win here so just get out of here with that nonsense of I can't believe they did this to him and it's like um hello he would have been just as hurt anywhere else on any other team so if you want to make him your issue then there you go but yeah that that narrative first of all doesn't make any sense and it also drives me nuts Perry was also asked about Arty and he said this Arty knows where we're at he knows how big of a year this was as far as letting our young players play letting our young young players develop giving the bats to the right guys giving the Innings to the right guys John that doesn't sound like we're gonna be competitive that sounds like a completely different narrative right well it it's funny because he says he knows where we're at yeah we're there now but before the season started Ry Marino and from his Ivory Tower you know interviewed his once a year interview with the media and said that he believed this team could compete and and that's the point yeah that's the point I was making yeah all offseason we heard from Perry minasian about how this team wants to be competitive and you and I sat here day after day week after week waiting for the competitive free agent signings and the competitive trades that they should have or could have or would have done and all offseason Mike we talked about well here's Jake mornik and uh yeah right you know he'll be he'll be good depth here's Willie coun he'll be he'll be good depth and and and we never got any competitive moves except for Robert Stevenson who obviously was already hurt and they had that elbow contract going on there and you know Matt Moore was a competitive move because he had a great 2023 and so for them to bring him back yeah you you made your Bullpen good except you signed somebody who was already hurt and then you didn't do anything else except sign you know uh sign depth but that was about it so this whole idea that uh he knows how big of a year this was as far as getting our young players to play and develop that's not what you said at the beginning of this season so maybe he didn't recognizes it now um and at least he's aware and conscious of what's going on on the field and with his team because otherwise we we wouldn't know we wouldn't know Mike if he if he knew that or not so Perry did speak on setting the bar on trade returns and then also the interest in Carlos Estes he said the biggest thing for us was Talent we looked at the guys that we thought other teams would be interested in the baseball operations team said at the deadline we set a bar for the talent that we could get back so essentially if we're going to trade Reno here's our minimum bar for what we would want back so that was interesting but also there was he said there was a ton of interest on a stez when you have a guy like that that you love so much it's a really tough trade to make especially when he has the effect he does in the locker room I thought that was an interesting comment he said for Carlos we probably had 12 or 13 teams expressed interest W and then he said last year we weren't offered anything close to what they were offered this year for Carlos estas so Mike your thoughts on setting the bar high or at least setting a bar and having an idea of what you wanted to get back for each player and then of course his thoughts on Estes does that make you feel any better about the lack of moves at the deadline I think that when it comes to like the renos and the wards that makes sense yeah because those guys have some years connected to them it still doesn't make sense that he didn't trade some of the expiring contracts it didn't make sense and I know the conversation was you just don't want to get junk back well you're not going to have anything at the end of the year so you might as well get a couple of Cracker Jacks or a couple of dice right you might as well get that stick of gum in the baseball card right you might as well get something again Cash Cash considerations Mike see what you can do right see what you can do I think what he got for Estes was awesome and I know that those guys have to develop I get all of that but I think it was an awesome trade and even Luis Garcia I think it was an awesome trade I think he really crushed it with those two trades so that honestly I I that I'm I was already settled in my heart about that when it comes to the one-year deals expiring contracts I I still wish that he did something with those players it just makes you wonder what kind of players could have come back again at that point it's a lotto ticket right it's it's if you're giving away an expiring deal for a guy who's not very good like Matt Moore this season then you're gonna get a lotto ticket but at least you have the lotto ticket and you have the one in one trillion chance of of hitting on something right and and but you don't even have the lotto ticket at this point you don't have anything because Matt Moore is going to walk away at the end of this season I could understand I've seen a lot of conversation about Kevin polar and what he brings to the table so that is an interesting element in terms of wisdom and years and knowledge and whatnot I think the players like having him around um so that is also part of that conversation hey thanks for making lockdown Angels your first listen of the day now make your second listen locked on MLB podcast with our good buddy Paul Francis solivan we call him soy he's
