Interstate 80 reopens after fire burns at California-Nevada state line

'S HAPPENING THERE. MELANIE. WELL, WE ARE JUST ACROSS THE HIGHWAY FROM NEAR THE GOLD RANCH ROAD EXIT AND TAKE A LOOK AT WHAT WE'RE SEEING ON THE HILLSIDE. THAT IS JUST NEAR INTERSTATE 80. IT'S STILL ON FIRE. AND THIS THING IS PUTTING UP QUITE A BIT OF SMOKE AT OUR LOCATION. WE AREN'T SMELLING THE SMOKE, BUT WE TOOK A DRIVE JUST A FEW MINUTES AGO EASTBOUND ON I-80. AND OF COURSE, WE'RE ALL THE WAY INTO THE NEVADA SIDE OF THINGS, AND WE ARE SEEING HOW THAT SMOKE IS HANGING HEAVY IN THE AIR. AND AS YOU HEAD EAST, YOU CAN REALLY SMELL THE SMOKE ON THE HIGHWAY AS YOU TRAVEL A COUPLE MILES DOWN THE ROAD. STILL FLAMES IN THE TREES AND IN THE VEGETATION THAT IS OFF THE SIDE OF THE ROADWAY AND THIS ALL STARTED AS A CAR FIRE YESTERDAY. AND QUICKLY SPREAD FROM THE HIGHWAY INTO THE VEGETATION NEARBY. AND WHAT WE'RE HEARING FROM CALTRANS IS THAT THEY HAVE SOME PHOTOS. WE'RE SHOWING YOU THOSE NOW OF JUST HOW THIS WHOLE THING TOOK OFF AS OF RIGHT NOW, THIS IS AROUND 400 ACRES. THAT WAS THE LAST REPORT FROM FIRE CREWS ABOUT JUST HOW BIG THIS THING GOT. AND HOW QUICKLY IT GREW. SO FIRE CREWS, WE CAN SEE FROM ACROSS THE HIGHWAY, WE CAN SEE THERE ARE FIRE CREWS ON THE GROUND RIGHT NOW NEAR THIS FIRE. IT APPEARS THEY ARE ACTUALLY JUST MAKING SURE IT DOESN'T SPREAD ANY FURTHER. UM, EVEN MORE THAN IT HAS. IT DOESN'T APPEAR AT THIS MOMENT FROM OUR VANTAGE POINT, THAT IT IS THREATENING ANY LOCATIONS THAT HAVE HOMES RIGHT IN THIS IMMEDIATE AREA. BUT JUST BEYOND THIS HILLSIDE, THERE ARE SOME HEAVILY POPULATED AREAS. UM, JUST A COUPLE MILES UP THE ROAD. SO YOU KNOW, THAT WAS A BIG CONCERN FOR CREWS YESTERDAY AFTER THIS THING STARTED TO SPREAD RAPIDLY. WE'LL CONTINUE TO FOLLOW THIS AND LET YOU KNOW THE PROGRESS THAT FIRE CREWS ARE MAKING. BUT FOR RIGHT NOW, DRIVERS DO NEED TO KNOW THAT THE ROAD NARROWS TO ABOUT ONE LANE ON INTERSTATE 80 FOR A FEW MILES PAST THE AREA WHERE THE FIRE IS BURNING.
