from the offense's inability to deliver a Kill Shot or the defense's inability to get off the field coupled with some costly penalties that cost LSU precious field position all of that led to a table pounding post game by Brian Kelly and that is sort of been the theme of the week frustration for LSU that unfortunately for the Tigers really can't be alleviated tonight the best LSU can do today isn't as expected and with due to injuries and one targeting suspension we'll likely to see new players at running back wide receiver and in the defensive secondary but an as expected is pretty much a prerequisite today you really want to see people get nervous win this game 38-21 you'll see true Terror but LSU a decisive favorite over their instate opponents tonight and look to win this game easily but with a lot of room for correction of things that happen in game number one Nicholls lost their opening game Louisiana Tech 25- 17 they come in led by head coach tin REO in his 10th season and by anybody's measure Tim Rebo is an outstanding coach he has spent his entire career in the state of Louisiana after being a college baseball player at Southeastern in nine Seasons reos teams have won two-thirds of their games in the Southland Conference won three Conference titles and been to the 1aa playoffs four times twice advancing to the second round but his team is out Gunn uh here tonight I expect a good effort from Nicholls I expect to they are a well coached Team every time I've seen Tim reos teams they've always been well coached they're just a little bit outmanned here uh in this game tonight so muso uh the uh overcast Skies kind of I I think uh or represent uh you know they kind of represent the LSU fan base this uh week a lot of people kind of dragging first of all the trip to Vegas Tes will take it out of and the the loss was kind of a gut punch and especially because it is the fifth in a row so tonight ain't about Redemption it's not about really anything other than get out there get a win get some things worked out and look a little bit smoother in your operation you did a week ago there is some Intrigue though isn't there in this game more than normal when it's LSU versus an FCS opponent where you go out there and name your score I mean the Jawan Johnson thing's absolutely interesting I know we're going to talk plenty about that but Brian Kelly said he's going to play Kaden Durham he's going to play you mentioned the injuries to your secondary there's going to be a lot of Youth out there you get to see Des DeShaun Spears and uh and you know Kyle and Jackson and guys like that so more Intrigue in this one than normal but yeah stay healthy too please that's that's you mentioned what four or five freshman there that's always the Intrigue with these games and I I'll give you that it is a little bit more uh because of the injuries and the one suspension that they're likely to see more playing time than they would have uh on on this night our entire staff with you today as we'll get you ready for the game and it's been a interesting start to the week two in the college football season we'll get you up to date on all of those things as well we're at Rouse's corner of Lee and Burbank you know if you're going to come by and you're going uh tailgating today all of your supplies all of your Meats all of your beer all of your crane State Insurance Agency for auto home life insurance in the Baton Rouge and surrounding areas William crane All State Insurance Agency now here's Jimmy YY we return here at Rouse's Eagle 98.1 game day don't forget about Rouses for all of your catering needs as you're heading out tailgating here this football season Jimmy this is why we love college football in the early window the most hyped game was Texas and Michigan the defending national Champions against the top five team it has been a complete blowout and right adjacent to that Penn State a top 10 team who was roughly a five touchdown favorite over Bowling Green is in the fight of their life they held a field goal lead bowling Green's got the ball with 10 minutes to go so this is why we watch E there's no doubt and man the bowling green thing uh really surprised me and I'm listen the the Texas beating U Michigan is not a surprise but how dominant they are um and it's not we we knew the Michigan offense is going to be behind they they they struggled last week against Fresno State not going to overreact ugly offensive football in week one but yeah but man I I thought Michigan was still pretty good on defense and Texas is moving the ball at will so little Spike for Quinn ERS as far as the heis is concerned I'll be shocked if we wake up tomorrow morning he's not the the betting favorite you're going to have to educate me because I haven't been able to watch Bowling Green in Penn State uh but what what you have seen of that tell me how uh Bowling Green has been able to stay in this game the score I mean just it tells you they going up and down the field Charlie I mean Penn State is just it's no flukes I mean these are sustained drives big play chunk plays and I mean you don't know who's who you you'd say this is probably a pick them game I mean Bowling Green has been that good on offense they been really impressive and so you know pen state would have actually made the uh like last 10 years Franklin's been there whatever more times than not make a 12 team playoff they beat the teams they're supposed to they lose to the teams that they're they're not supposed to win but this is this is how to left field and andair looks great again I mean I thought that he was improved from last year you know against West Virginia what I saw and he's having another good day so that's not the problem is the defense this is a bit alarming for a team that I think is going to be in you know the field to 12 in that playoff Arkansas and Oklahoma State our experts were split on this game Arkansas has control the action save for a pick six t tyon green has had a really good day for Arkansas and they hold an eight-point lead early in the fourth quarter and they are driving again here um I I think it's funny watching the TV copy of this they show Bobby patrino like he's the head coach and Sam Pitman like he's a coordinator even instead of the other way around but Arkansas uh putting up a very very good showing here this afternoon you know um but it should probably be tied now now they just converted a big third and 10 near Midfield there at the Oklahoma State 32 so probably getting points again with 1345 to go in a game but just like last night's NFL game man when the Eagles held the Packers to two field goals uh early as like man they there goes their cushion and that's what's happened to Oklahoma State the last few times inside the red Zone and one touchdown was called back because of a penalty and then uh an offensive interference called another drive so settling for two field goals could be 2121 but no 2113 and now uh Arkansas is in great shape to make this the a two- possession game terrific game down uh at yulman Stadium uh Daren menah the starting quarterback for two-lane is having a fantastic day but Kansas state has just struck for a 45 yard touchdown on a fourth and one to tie the game about two and a half minutes to go in the third quarter they're tied at 20 uh we thought two lane had a real good shot in this game they played really well Kansas State Chris kman excellent coach uh this one should come down to the wire down in New Orleans to me two lanes every bit as good as Kansas State this year uh I mean we we know that uh you know Willie Fritz left but Summerall is a a highly thought of Coach that's a good hire by him and he took his best five defensive players from a pretty good defensive team they are better than what they were last year and we saw Kai Horton in the Old Miss game and he looked fond so he's going to win the this kid beat him out and now we see why two lanes tied right now but they should be leading because they left a few points on the board as well but no two lanes and you know what finally the very frugal booster fan fan base of two lanes finally got off of some of that money and gave it some nil some areall negotiated that his nil budget before he accepted the job so of all PE you know T Lan's got a little momentum program wise it's a hell of a game and I think they're GNA win it J yeah Mena they've made a lot of of talk on the broadcast about how lightly recruited he was had to come in and really win that job he was not expected to be the starting quarterback he has looked uh he looked fantastic there I want to I want to point this go ahead I'm sorry he's a runner he's St Runner that is is he's developed already he's very comfortable passing the ball it's all you know I know the five star did the the kid Kansas State you know Avery Johnson I know he hit that pass it was wide open but they he's a he's a runner trying to play quarterback as well two two t he's got the better quarterback in this game he's way better thr throwing the ball than Avery Johnson he he had six completions of better than 15 yards in the first half alone so I I agree with you there I want to point this real quick Charlie guys watch a big drop for two lane as we speak probably lose a 25 yard play and Arkansas with that scoring threat is just wide right so it remains a one possession game in Still Water I want to point this score out to everybody who wants LSU to schedule a game in Ireland okay wonderful setting and everything it's great it wears on yeah yeah they serve beer plenty places it will wear on your football team Georgia Tech looks like a very tired football team up at Syracuse is 17-point game for the orange they have put up three 500 yards of total offense through three and A2 quarters and Jimmy I I know we agree on this too Ohio State gave up too early on Kyle McCord he looked fantastic today uh and and Syra he looks he looks he looks like a pro looks like a pro quarterback uh he's thrown for 370 yards and four touchdowns so far and Syracuse is going to win that game uh it Georgia Tech all the way to Ireland all the way back to Atlanta sloppy win last week against Georgia State and then you got to go up to Syracuse this was a tough spot for the jackets poor poor move by Ohio State but you know their rationale was kind of Knocked a little silly because you know they lost to Michigan again but you know you have an experience you have an experience at um you have an experience at the quarterback he's a first year starter and he and he he was mediocre he was okay but now you reap the benefits of putting him you know with his second year starter how many quarterbacks do we see aair is a lot better at Penn State Daniels in burrow at LSU the second year we know about that but you know year two Kyle mcord I thought was a better option than year one in will Howard well ain't no doubt my M now this kid is legit he looks great and you know let's just put it this way EJ's fraternity is a lot happier with me today than last week Syracuse was my best bet so they're up 3114 with six six and a half to go I like them as well let's go to the 230 window Jimmy uh couple of options Baylor in Utah is got a little intrigued and Iowa and Iowa State Iowa may have an offense we'll see uh they scored 40 points last week I know I think they had a defensive score or maybe even two in that game but um Iowa and Iowa State's usually a slobber knocker well you know look and it's gone under the last four years in a row um it's a load total again but aberna I know he he's not going to carry team his back but he's so much better than the guy that replaced him when he got hurt last year so he's back and you know so I was not going to be some but he they have to have him and I think he gives them a much better shot and I think they won't be as as nearly as ugly as they were on the offensive side last year we know fence can coach I mean he's gotten the most out of those resources and then some but I mean it's just uh it you know I don't know just uh you know they they they look pretty good today so I like Iowa in a slight lean there I'm going to take them at home I think Iowa State's got a decent team as well so many teams on that level not great but you know in the Big 12 they got about 10 teams that are about maybe you know 25 to 35 you know power rating in the country and Iowa State's one of them but I'm leaning toward Iowa my disappoints in that when for a one of the more intriguing games tonight is Tennessee and NC State that's a neutral sight game in Charlotte want to see if Tennessee can back up what they did a week ago Nico pronounce his last name for me muso IAM malava thank you very much the very B hoood quarterback in Tennessee and you'll recognize the quarterback at NC State Grayson McCall who's in his 19th year college football all of them been great making his 43rd career start he was a star at Coastal Carolina um this uh this game likely have more Tennessee fans at it than NC State fans even though it's in the state of North Carolina uh Tennessee about a nine-point favor jimmmy yeah I liked it when it was a little less than that but you know Nico he's he's a guy with a lot of Wheels as well and was a little run happppppy in that bowl win against Iowa last year but he you know I know it's against there but he was throwing a ball he made some nice throws and Nick sa on game day today said he is the perfect quarterback for hypo system and we'll see I in NCC gave up all kinds of yardage to Western Carolina they were in a game just to win that one all last week and so they uh I mean I like Tennessee not crazy about the line move but I'm still uh if I gotta play it I'm taking Tennessee I think this guy is really good and look they're gonna score a lot of points against Tennesse State Defense which is usually a little better than it with it first appears and look we can't overreact to offensive football in week one but we can if we if a defense is struggling when they're ahead like they did last week that's a that's a warning time one more thing that Nick Savin said on game day today said LSU is not as you're not as bad as you think you are uh you you buying in we're not going to find out a lot tonight but you buying into that overall my opinion is not changed it's roster is not typical of LSU standards you know to save but took over especially on the defensive side and you know they're not total SS but you know it's they can make it to the uh the college football playoff I just don't see LSU making a run and you know took the Kelly two years get we we've said this a bunch of times to get his his staff straight they're recruiting they're they're winning now but I um yeah can they be one of the top 11 teams in the country you know that get in minus a group of five teams yeah they can be um that that loss really is damaging uh La last week if they you know if they lose two more games like I expect them to might be that that game May cost it you know a trip to the playoffs but I'm I'm maybe I'm a little spoil that just our roster just not where it needs to be you know to be a serious Contender for the whole thing who's bringing a so loocks hold on pull up my hold on train my buddy he's Golf Coast Bank the bank that cares about you now from the LSU sports radio network here's Gordy rush rush and return here at Rouse's our learish countdown to kickoff about 4 hours and 35 minutes and before we go to Gordy we'll update you that Oklahoma state has scored gone for two and made it that makes it a tie ball game now 21 a piece Arkansas was in control of this game for a long stretch but uh another turnover the pick six kept Oki stake within shouting dis in the first half this time a fumbled punt set him up with a short field and with 937 to go in still water that game is tied at 21 all right let's bring in uh Gordy Rush Gordy good afternoon hey good afternoon a little bit of a different setting than uh a week ago uh when we were getting ready uh for the game but this is the home opener and uh you know it's 100 Years of Tiger Stadium so that's kind of a cool little uh addendum here today as LSU gets going with Nicholls State let's start with uh what we saw a week ago Gordy the biggest surprise to me was that LSU was unable to consistently run the football against UNLV I know you you think that there are some reasons for that so what did you think of the tiger Russian attack yeah I look I I I I thought exactly what I told you in the post game after I went and watched the entire second half offensive film I I I just felt like LSU decided in the second half we know they wanted to run the football but it was how they they wanted to run the football they went I'd say 75% of their sets were with two tight ends with pale and pimpton and all the things that they had built up all the credits they had built up in the first half by throwing the ball all over the joint and taking a USC defense that was really lined up tight playing man and pushed them back to Zone and they opened up a lot of space defensively when they brought the two tight ends back in SC just jammed everybody up at the line of scrimmage and other than the one the one drive where they had some success busting emry it it became a numbers game after watching the film I didn't think the o line played that bad I thought the tight ends blocking struggled immensely and and so you know my question is what's the identity of this offense are you going to keep trying to go two and three tight ends and pound the football or do you spread the football field do you put all these great athletes out there and make defenses defend the field horizontally and vertically and then throw the ball to set up the run run when you have numbers in the Box because they got to back up and cover these people the second part of it was that we're never going to confuse Garrett NM with Jaden Daniels as a rushing quarterback Daniels was Elite but nus meer is athletic enough to be able to run the football a little bit and Gordy when you're running zone Reed and the quarterback never keeps it then it's just a glorified delayed handoff so getting nus me at least a little bit involved just to show that you have that club in your back I think is something LSU needs to do moving forward well if you're going to run that zone re action absolutely or or use the RPO right in other words pull the ball out and throw the quick slant a lot of people do that when they have pocket quarterbacks either way you've got to think do something with that run game that's going to involve that nus Meyer is a threat one way or another running or throwing some sort of 90 game look another part of all that film that I had a chance to go back and look at you and getting a chance to digest it Charlie I I could think back to nus Myers's film in high school and watching he was in one of those Aid offenses he's never been put in a situation with two tight ends even the end of the Georgia game the game against uh Wisconsin and the bowl game so I think this this whole set was foreign to him so how about adjusting this offense to do the things that he's done well in the past and where he's comfortable we unfortunately are not going to see any more John Emer he tore his ACL at practice on Tuesday and he's out for the year and we hated for that kid because he's he's been through so much but it does mean today that we'll see the two freshman Kaden Durham and Joan Johnson who they moved over from defense this week Gordy I I watched him at Lafayette Christian and I'll give you a comp that he remind he played quarterback there that he reminds me a great deal of shyon Carrie when Carrie was at Shaw and Shaw and Carrie was so elusive it he was such an instinctive Runner he wasn't the fastest guy in a straight hundred but boy good luck trying to catch him that's what Johnson reminded me of in high school now this is the big jump so tell me what you know about those two kids well no same right I mean he was all over the football field he was a pleasure to watch the question is how much of the offense can you give him you know how much of the offense can he digest and then going back to the bigger topic what are you going to do offensively um you know if you're going to play 11 personnel one fight in running back then running back's role in pass protection becomes critical and that's why Josh Williams has been so valuable and I think that's why it took Caleb Jackson a little bit of time to get on the field so I'm I'm interested to see what what you know in in the course of a week you can give him four or five plays to get out there but you definitely want to definitely want to get him out there today and give him a chance to play so I'll be interested to see the sets they put him in Jimbo teach him one play I mean we go back to that all the time we're also uh going to see uh probably some Sheldon Samson today uh the uh the tiger uh relief receiving core where they'll be down Chris Hilton and they'll also be down Kyle Parker today Samson somebody that uh Brian Kelly pointed out uh from really the the beginning of Camp is somebody who wanted to see make a move so we should see some of Sheldon Samson tonight yeah you know what was missing last week was a vertical stretch you know I I I thought LSU had Superior Talent over USC's defense there are a couple horizontal stretches you know in which they were able to cross the field and make some plays and over than that one fade the Lacy they really didn't successfully stretch the field the way that you've seen Garrett NM been able to stretch the field you know he has an NFL arm so I think it's huge that they get Samson back there his X and and give somebody a chance with his side his size his speed to go get one of those 50-50 balls you know when we watched the film Richard Dixon and I have brought film into the into the podcast now you can get it on YouTube you can get it louisian sports.net please go and subscribe we drop them on Mondays one of the things we were looking at uh Gordy was USC was playing so soft they were determined not to have a ball thrown over their head when you went back and looked at the film were there deep shots I know they didn't take were there deep shots to be taken there were deep shots early I mean they came and they brought pressure and I think that when when they realized that they were struggling to cover them they backed up and and then they backed up for the majority of the second quarter the third quarter until LSU brought the game back in a box and then they started play playing press look nus Myers got too good of arm you got too good of weapon not to not take five or six of those shots a game and they were there for the taking I think the the deal was is that you couldn't check with me out there you didn't necessarily want to go to it with Thomas or Anderson out there and he wasn't on the field last week but you want that to an option if you want to check to making sense of investing now from the LSU sports radio network here's Gordy Rush Gordy rush we return here at Rouse let's give you an update on another game uh that we're watching down at yolman stadium Kansas state has just tied two lane at 27 waves going to get the ball back with 11 minutes to go in the game it's been a really entertaining contest we'll keep you up to date on that one Gordy uh defensively uh last week I'm sitting there uh at Allegiance stadium and with 10 minutes to go nine minutes to go I'm thinking this has been a really good effort they've given up 13 points right about 300 yards this is a much improved group and in the last 8 minutes of the game they look more like the group from a year ago what did you see in LSU's defensive e itics or in Personnel in in week one yeah you look I thought maybe a little bit out of gas up front seven and and uh that last series they got a little predictable when I you call preent but they played some Zone and and they got picked aart and then yeah linoln Riley I thought did a nice job scheming some things he realized pressure was coming and finally took some Saabs and pressure was going to come from the middle of the football field and hit some big plays in the middle of the football field because the linebackers are safeties or somebody else was departing and then also I I I think they were able to pick out you know the weaknesses on the football team and that was the corner opposite stance and then you know Gilbert struggled in that football game in the middle of the field and he did a nice job working on the hash people a lot to like though Charlie you you like the effort I I think you you you'll see some sh some new faces out there this week is what I'm expecting but they're on the right path Harold Perkins you get some opinions this week Brian Kelly said he liked what he saw the stat sheet looks okay you didn't see any glaring weaknesses from him but you also didn't see a lot of big plays what did you think of Perkins yeah again I I thought he played fine the the problem some of the times and and what I'm going to do if I'm offensive coordinator if I know he's going to play that little linebacker I'm going to turn him into a defensive back so you saw a lot of M multiple back set that time you know multiple receiver uh sets to his side which forced him wider in coverage and we've seen that we saw that the first year later in his his freshman year we saw it in a sophomore year when they moved him a lot and so there were times he was just in space and just in space and the ball doesn't come to him that and he's not going downhill then for the LSU fans it looks like he's ineffective Gord did you notice anything different with Savon Jones then years past he was all over the place Sunday night I thought Savon Jones was fantastic I I thought the whole front four was much improved I didn't know what to expect uh I I thought Jones that whether he was outside or they put him inside on some of those third down sets Suggs was able to bat a ball I he knew Bo was going to coach him up but I I think they've got some bodies in there in the defensive tackle position that's serviceable right um and the defensive end we knew they had some talent and going back to Charles's first question about Perkins I mean that's you know that's some of it on first and second second down Perkins is playing the will linebacker position and you've got some guys that are getting a little bit of penetration Jones when we watched him in high school was an elite recruit because of that first step he could hit that edge I thought he played too heavy last year in fact I was wondering if they were trying to make it to where he would eventually slide down and play on the interior he looks lighter now uh I I thought the first step was was back the than what we saw closer to when he was a younger player than what we saw last year so I I agree with you there Gord the guy I'd like to see more of is Deshawn wac you you compared him in postgame uh last week to a young BJ o galari yeah that that's my sleeper I I think if anybody's got the explosive first step and can really make it happen to me it's wac and he's he's a I think Swinson is is a is a fine player I think wac is a little bit better athlete a little bit more side he's wall and needs to continue get reps what do you expect in the secondary they'll be without Jordan Gilbert in the first half because of the late targeting penalty there's two young safeties in Deshawn Spears and kyin Jackson that a lot of people are high on what do you think we'll see yeah I think you're going to see them both I I think that's the future uh they have an upside they need to play they need to play together truthfully I mean you got one that's the red shirt one that's a true freshman I'm bullish on both of them I hope to see a lot of them they're they're long they're rangy they're both about 6' three you're going to notice the size is right off the right off the bat with them Gordy a word about Nicholls before we go I I know you like I am a big fan of Tim Rebo he's done a terrific job down there uh he's won three conference championships he's been in the playoffs four times he's won about two-thirds of his conference games which is all you can ask uh he is uh done a great job down there his staff you know his uh his team is out gun tonight but uh what he's done down there is impressive now he's done an incredible job running you know rushing the football they've been a Zone to to pound it type of Team uh he's got Colin gugenheim that was the two-time uh I think Catholic League Player of the Year as the quarterback down at John Curtis is just a load I mean signed it Iowa State if I recall 62210 and they're physical and he's kept the Louisiana kids there he's done a whale of the job all right Gordy we appreciate it we'll talk to you in uh in post game okay buddy thank you two big swings uh in the game that we're watching Oklahoma State takes their first lead of the game on a three- yard run by Brennan Presley with 5 minutes to go they lead Arkansas 28-21 did that drive start on a turnover MOA was it did it a turnover on Downs they went 80 yards they did go 80 yards and down at yolman Stadium two-lane was inside the 25 yd line of Kansas State they had busted a couple of big plays to get down there but then a sack fumble and a long scooping score has Kansas State on the lead 34 to 27 with 8 minutes and change to go two lane will get the ball back big big swing of momentum down in New Orleans we and also Georgia Tech who I had written off uh as is is now pulled within three of Syracuse 31- 28 that game with about two and a half minutes to go uh at Syracuse so lots of exciting uh games here coming down of the wire in the early window we'll take a break we'll come back and talk recruiting monster story uh down out of New Orleans in Louisiana High School recruiting Shay Dixon service are a family tradition all right quick update before we bring in Shay Arkansas very quickly took him a minute and a half answers the Oklahoma State touchdown tied at 28 and still water 401 to go meanwhile down at yolman two lane on the ensuing kickoff Kansas State leads is 34-27 may have fumbled they're looking at this Musa what do you think I I think it's a fumble looked like he was on top his body was on top of other bodies and right before his elbow went down Kansas State punched that ball out it'll be a back breaker for the wave if it's true because Kansas state will have the ball inside the 25 yd line we'll keep you up to date on that now let's bring in uh Shay Dixon from on three Shay good afternoon how are you I'm doing well how are you Charlie you may have heard this story out of New Orleans about jaem Stewart I'm not bearing the lead here I know LSU got a commitment last night and we'll talk about that in a second but jaem Stewart the defensive lineman from formerly St saog number one player in the country next year maybe maybe this year um left school and he's transferring IMG uh I don't think that's any big secret but uh you can fill us in there he was at the game last week Shay this is a massive recruit that at least 15 minutes ago was back it was in LSU's backyard and now no longer is so fill in the blanks here on what's going on with jaem Stewart yeah I mean we had heard about jaem looking into reclassify or looking into reclassifying the start with I should say uh and he had kind of talked about it uh across the summer um and said hey look I'm looking to reclassify I think I want to jump in from 2026 into 2025 uh but it was going to be hard pressed to do it say a it just wasn't a situation where I thought that was going to play out based off everyone I had talked to so I said look I don't think this is going to happen and I thought I was uh out of uh the woods there but but he they play tonight St a plays tonight and he will not be on H the field and on Thursday he withdrew from St a and uh I think a large part of this is to find a the landing spot where you can reclassify and uh we will see what this widespread speculation unless I've missed something in the last 15 minutes as to where he's goingon to go and IMG is a pretty good guess I don't know for sure look I looked at img's schedule and add drop dates and all that and I I their final date to add courses for this semester is coming up on Wednesday but I don't know uh when would actually mean uh you could enroll by or if you already had to be enrolled look again unless I've missed something uh here in the back in the past few minutes I think that uh that it's kind of verdict still out look trust me I think LSU has worked on this one hard once him very much to stay in Louisiana even if it's at a public school okay so uh and you don't miss nothing Shay so I'm I'm leaning on you here he was at the USC LSU game uh a week ago what to read into that because I know USC is is certainly a player here and so is Texas and so is Ohio State and so is anybody that he'll pick up the phone and talk to because anybody would love to have him where are we right now it depends on who you ask and look it also depends on what class he's in do is he about to sign with someone in December January or February or is do we have another year of this now I will say if you ask me to pick the teams yes USC has got a lot of Buzz around them uh he was at the game I don't think that USC has to me anymore or any team any more significant of a shot than the others do I think that you'd flip it and say this isn't a runaway for LSU that they're really in a battle because he's taken so many visits he's looked at a lot of schools but if this is an nil thing where it comes down to that and certainly LSU has proven to be capable in that Department I would put Oregon Ohio State the those two teams ahead of A USC right now so we're playing a guessing game again I don't think we know anything until we find out where he's going to school and then if he's early in or if he's trying to reclassify to get into this current class because what happens if he ends up at Carr does that change anyone's outlook on where LSU stands no I think for LSU the big goal is if he stays in state no matter where it is they've got connections that high school and then he can visit you know on a short drive as opposed to if he ended up at an IMG or a place like that then he's no longer in state he's can't keep an eye on him kind of at all times which is what they can do with a lot of New Orleans kids in terms of uh what everybody's saying kind of around the program um but I think we're just in a holding pattern we are waiting to see what he's going to do because if he makes this jump and is not eligible like does it play this year like there's a lot of scenarios Charlie like he could go to a school end up not being eligible but stay in class reclassify go to college next year but will have only played up to his sophomore year of high school so so many different variables obviously he's being pulled I think in a couple of directions here uh again I think long before we're going to say like oh is LSU out of the race here we need to know not at all ever but we need to know where he's going to go to school and if he reclassifies and neither of those we know an answer to yet tell you what if he goes to car it's going to make car damn hard to beat they got enough Talent more hard even harder to beat yeah Shay what's educate me on the El transfer eligibility uh issues that he will face if he stays in state I think the only big thing is if he goes to a public school you got to be in the district right um you can't just pick a public school or wherever it I mean he was at Aug um kind of they grab kids from all over but a school any public school let's say let's just say New Orleans metro area you have to be living in the district so that's a big thing right now in terms of a landing spot so if he's in the district I think that he'd be eligible I don't know how much of a fight Carr puts up with the lhsaa if he ends up trying to bop into a school that's in their District or whatever it might be and they have to play and um I don't know how messy or not messy that might get this was I thought it was kind of done I thought this was all right no one's reclassifying out of Aug I don't know how often they've had that happen and if they did forette would have done it or Tyron would have done you know like there's been many kids come through Aug that teams have wanted to reclassify into a you know get them on the campus more quickly um so I didn't think it would happen there I thought again thought I was out of the woods not he just withdraws the day two days before their first game of the year before there was before that was uh Leonard there was Leroy horde go back and go back and look up the recruitment of Leroy horde back in the 80s and I'll show you true angst amongst colleges trying to get his uh his Services all right um LSU did get a commitment from another defensive tackle from Georgia last night tell us about Walter matthysse yeah buddy Mattis Walter buddy mattisse we'll know him as buddy matthysse once he gets to campus but okay he's a guy that Bo Davis was recruiting at Texas this has been a common theme they've got 4 d linemen now all four of them predated Bo Davis's relationship with them predated coming to LSU in January so the benefit of hiring a guy like that who was at Texas was he was already recruiting a bunch of big name uh defensive linemen and Buddy Mattis is your typical DET tackle I think who you look at it and you say oh he's a three star okay maybe with a good senior year he can be a four star and you're trying to get in the minds of the rankings team but at the same time he tackles a very premium position because there's not a lot of them out there there's only a handful each cycle that end up being a festar you know maybe five six seven that even end up being top 100 players so everyone's going after the top 30 40 guys out there if they feel good about him I wouldn't care one thing about Buddy mathis's ranking right now I would say one what do I care about that Blake Baker and Bo Davis your D line coaching DC badly wanted him they went to Georgia and got him two pull up his offer list it's got more than 30 teams and it's Georgia Bama clemon LSU Miami Oregon Texas I can go up and down the top 25 so that's good enough for me if LSG wants him and so did all of those other teams at some point uh I think it's a pretty good ad and I will say that Chad Simmons who runs everything really him and Steve Wong what a pair uh at on three we've got on the national side but Chad's in Georgia uh knows everything about Georgia and he's texted me the past two weeks after G games I didn't hear last night how he did but the past two weeks and said hey look buddy looks a lot and looking a lot better as a senior like there was this prospect that people saw that oh look he can develop uh and I think he's already FASTT tracking that a bit as uh he begins this season so you'll take it hey music to the ears of LSU fans Not only did you kind of get out cheap and I don't mean that in a bad way you didn't overspend for the barrows and the Dominic Williams in the Supreme Court well you went and got Gio pasaz and you went and got um sugs out of um Grand Valley State I thought both those guys looked good last week for what they needed them to do and they didn't break the bait break the bank to do it so uh lesson learned there even though they try to get the tackles early there's just not a ton of them but don't get yourself into the spring portal window needing it and what you need to do there is instead say let's load up on high school guys we can develop and before senior year start Charle four DTS are committed and here we only used to talk about SAU cap where Alabama was concerned so this is new stuff for us Shay who's on campus today season opener for LSU I think a big one that people are excited to be back on campus is Lamar Brown now he goes to school on campus he goes to uhai but uh he has certainly made a ton of visits kind of all around uh to different teams uh here recently so that's one nice to get back on the campus and over the summer he saw a lot of schools but he's a 2026 guy but again one of the top 10 players in the country right now on on three uh just like jaem Stewart is just like bla Bradford at kathai is you've got three of the top 10 are in Louisiana right now so that's a pretty big deal you want them on campus uh as much as possible um and then from there they'll have I think they had nine 10 guys who are already committed will be here uh and then look destr and Jabari Mack you kind of look around the state Bryon Martinez out at East distensions the top 15 top 10 offensive tackle uh on the on three industry uh rankings we've got him even higher he'll be at the game today and then Elijah Haven he's going into his sophomore year at a hell of a night for Dunham last night at quarterback um he'll be there uh Karen Smith kid over at Holy Cross who is by far I think at this point the best running back for next year in Louisiana will'll keep an eye on when or if Frank Wilson makes that offer and uh a handful of others I think they had about nine or 10 guys that already have offers that will be there and that's that Javari Mack Rashad Sterling at Lutcher who's a senior they're keeping an eye on but in total about 60 kids Charlie I think their list had just gone over 60 but it's one of those things too where you're playing Nicholls you got a lot of kids coming in for the other big games and maybe more than anything High School season just started last night for Louisiana and some games got rained out and are being played today so this was never expected to be a a huge visitor game and it's nice just to have a handful of local guys there and say hey let's just focus on football uh and we'll get these guys here let them watch it and get a dubb and move on because guess what SEC play begins next week so uh I think the whole recruiting will take a back seed at least in terms of big guys on campus until some of these bigger games start rolling in and we get back into our routine we could sleep in our own beds uh tonight uh and you know uh not have to pay exorbitant amounts of money to uh Uber and park so uh Shay what's coming up after the game with you guys at on three we'll catch up with all these guys who are and a lot of guys who aren't you know they'll keep an eye on games and see what they thought of it but uh it is a big week I mean look we're tracking jaem Stewart what happening uh DJ picket their festar commit is at Miami this weekend but again his cousin plays at Miami his other cousins eventually going to commit there these are all things DJ knew long before he committed LSU and there was a lot of Buzz last night that oh well he's going to Miami he's going to Miami and DJ went out and had two picks last night uh for his team and woke up today and tweeted out blessed and then tiger emojis and look he could have committed to Miami when he committed in the summer he didn't he committed to LSU so and a lot of people are worried oh what if Miami has this great season all that we'll see but right now they've got him locked in and it gives you a festar quarterback a festar corner and a festar running back who to this point have all said they are very solid and locked in on LSU Shay we always appreciate it we'll talk to you early next week before LSU play South Carolina yep real quick if anyone forgot they're still a top three recruiting class right now so worry not after that first L everything is fine I's see what you did there all right uh we'll take a break we're here at Rouse's coming down to the wire in these two games Arkansas and Oklahoma State tied at 28 a minute 37 to go Cowboys with the football facing third and 11 two lane down seven with two minutes to go they are in Kansas State territory at the 33 yd Line This is Eagle Oklahoma State 28 a piece minute 18 to go fourth down and four for Oklahoma State from the Arkansas 15 yd line and Mike Gundy is going to go for it wow that's aggressive wow that is a choice wow they are not going to kick the oh he jumped off sides yeah you got you got motion so that's going to back up that ought have make this decision easy I I'm I'm shocked the tackle mve first or no I think it's a false start uh on on Oklahoma State I can't believe he's going for this no that yeah that's a choice I mean there's a minute to go I mean if there were three minutes to go I would understand Arkansas's out of timeouts Arkansas is out of timeouts it's a good point I I'm flabbergasted that he's going for it now they they're talking about whether this is an offsides or or a false start um so we'll keep you up to date what's going on there two lane just out of the two-minute do I have to call it a two time out you do not uh out of the two-minute warning assing uh the uh wave gets a pass interference penalty so they're going to have first down inside the 202 I believe 23 yard line it is a false start over at Oklahoma State Kansas State leads two lane 34 to 27 but the wave going to get this pass interference they'll be right down around the 20 yd line we'll keep you up to date there another barn burner uh Pittsburgh lead Cincinnati 28 to 27 Cincinnati has the ball but there's only one second to go and they are on their side of the field fourth quarter score Texas sanm leads mcnees 52 to S Wave will set up at the 21 yd line here 21 yd line so it's Fourth and n for Arkansas I I'm sorry for Oklahoma State he wouldn't dare go for it again that aough that was a tough call too that they just had go against them I mean the the in moved first and he got back and the guy reacted I get it but man you think they were just trying to get him to jump I mean I do they had all three timeouts there's no way he would have done that so now they're going to kick the field goal and and he's fired up though man gosh gundy's he was he was in their the officials face before the the false start yeah I'm I I'm going to just say that they would have gone up there with a hard count even even out of the shotgun though it's it's a tough it's a tough draw him being that fired up I would think so because he's saying look man we that's you know we were going for it and we got him to jump and his guy jumped first okay so this field goal is from 38 yards it is directly in the center of the field to give Oklahoma State the lead with 59 seconds to go and it is right down the middle so Oklahoma State 55 seconds to go has the lead in still water is that their first lead no no they LED 2 28 to 21 all right another flag on Kansas State another defensive penalty that's going to give two lane another first down let me get uh with the rest of the scoreboard number one Georgia leads Tennessee Tech 24 to nothing at the half three touchdown passes for Carson Beck Ball State Missouri State tied at seven at the half uh UNLV leads Utah Tech 21-7 that is late in the first quarter and the 230 games are just getting underway earlier finals today in college football number three Texas no problem with number 10 Michigan 31- 12 and I'm not sure it was that close quers threw for 246 yards and three touchdowns number eight Penn State survived this was not a fluke they beat Bowling Green 34 to 20 oh I'm sorry the two the penalty was on two lane lane penalty was on two lane backs him up to the uh backs him up to the 31 yd line uh they'll get the penalty yardage back on a on a first down a second down run State beat Bowling Green 34-27 uh this was a three-point ball game going into the fourth quarter and Penn State had to hang on Syracuse beats number 23 Georgia Tech 31- 28 Ohio State transfer Kyle McCord 381 yards and four touchdown passes for the orange Minnesota beat Rhode Island 48 to nothing ruter beat akan 4917 Pittsburgh has held on they beat Cincinnati 28 to 27 that game's gone final you beat miramac 30 63 to1 17 Memphis beat Troy 38- 17 and Army beat Florida Atlantic 24-7 now uh a drive for uh ton green he's thrown for 363 yards in a touchdown he's also thrown a pick that was a pick six for Arkansas huge huge play uh in this ball game two-lane facing fourth down and six from the 17 yard line of Kansas State we'll keep it right here and let you know what happens with these next two plays Arkansas uh excuse me uh two-lane uh go down inside the 5 yard line for a first down but there's a flag that uh is Mena the quarterback who's had a really really good day but this is probably going to come back would have been a first down would have been first and goal but this is probably going to be a hold that's going to bring uh bring that back we'll come back uh with more uh when we return here Ed Rouse's our learish Countdown the kickoff is just inside of 4 hours this is Eagle 98.1 game day Golf Coast Office Products is a nationally recognized Savin 98.1 game day Scouting Report presented by Demco providing safe reliable and competitively priced Energy Services to co-op members since 1938 welcome back in Eagle 98.1 Game Day live from the Rouses on Burbank and Lee continuing to count you down LSU Nichols the home opener in a renovated Tiger Stadium tonight for LSU and Brian Kelly coming off a 0 and one again dropping the opener for the fifth straight year welcome in Jim naggie to get a scouting report on the weekend the executive director of the Reesa Senior Bowl Jim we appreciate it as always how are you I'm doing great man let's dive right into it so with the Tigers facing Nicholls you're really gonna focus in on the LSU guys and I think it's a great week to do that in general coming off of the game against USC because while it's another loss for LSU and that's not popular around these parts obviously you did see a lot of good things in the ball game so let's start offensively and we'll start obviously with with Garrett nus Meer the quarterback it's his second start Jim it's another 300 yard day I mean the stats are what the stats are but what did you see from nus Myers's performance on Sunday in that game versus the Trojans yeah mat I I understand that Tigers fans are disappointed but there was there was a lot of good stuff really on both sides of the ball in that game there really was I mean first of all USC is a better football team than than I thought they were going to be they look different on defense um than they did a year ago a lot different in terms of just physicality and effort and tackling um but notm I mean shoot I thought he played a really good game you know he threw that pick late but um other than that the guy the biggest thing was was just how accurate he was he put the ball into some some really tight spots some of the downfield stuff some of those throws to Lacy In The End Zone um where it took you know incredible ball placement were really impressive he's he's just such a natural thrower I mean even some of the rollout throwback screens that they do and he he's he's just he's really fun to watch um you know last year that ball game was a small sample size so you didn't really know what to expect you didn't know if the guy just you know played out of his mind in that game um I've seen him enough at the man camp and other things I know he can throw it um but just he operated and functioned at a really high level um he just got a shootout with another good quarterback that the mosid for USC played really well too that was a is an evaluator that was a really fun game of two quarterbacks uh two really accurate quarterbacks the other thing I have on nus it's interesting around here because everybody I mean look Jim Ellis you went through such a a quarterback I mean just I don't want to say Wasteland but you went a lot of years without great quarterback play in Baton Rouge and now you've had it from Joe burrow to Jaden Daniels and now everyone's looking for nus to be that guy and I think a lot of people when they look at the draft are wondering okay can he sneak into the top half of this draft you know early day two maybe late first round you mentioned the small sample siiz but seen him in at camps how do Scouts kind of build a profile on a guy who's been in college for a long time but he only has two starts yeah I mean I I think ideally you see a a really long body of work you're going way back to the coach parcel's model where he always wanted his his quarterback his first round quarterbacks to have 30 plus career starts I mean I don't know nus Meer probably won't get to that number um and shoot depending on how he plays this year he he might leave after this year man it's not it's not out of a realm of possibility this guy plays himself into into being a first couple round pick and and again at quarterback I mean I think for all these guys if you're going to be a top 50 player you at least have to you know seriously consider leaving um but again with nil money the way it is I mean this is such unchartered waters for these quarterbacks I mean unless you're going to be a first Dr pick sometime sometimes these guys are making more money right now in college so um I I I don't I think it's pretty safe to say that you have hit on a third straight quarterback there for LSU and I'm just excited to see what it looks like the rest of the year he's got plenty of weapons around him on the offensive side of the ball let's stay there and let's talk Kiren Lacy and Jim KY Lacy's a very interesting player I mean he's been at LSU now going into his third year and it's been an evolution where you know he gets here in 2022 fights to get on the field is expected to take a step in 23 but he's just behind Thomas and neighbors and now really looks like he's developed into wide receiver one for LSU what have you seen over the last two years and now into a third that has developed most in KY Lacy's game and helped him to this level uh you know that we're gonna talk about some guys here Matt that that really took nice jumps from last year and kirn lac's another one I think that uh you know the question mark with Lacy right now is going to be speed and what that 40 time ends up being because that that's a big deal for all these wide receivers but when you watch the tape from the other day he plays with good Tempo I improved route Tempo which sometimes tells me that he's more comfortable he's not thinking as much when he's running his routes um and then the other thing that's plagued him that which tiger fans know are some inopportune drops and I thought he caught the ball I think he had one drop the other day but other than that I thought he caught the ball really well so I mean he looks like a guy that's going to be a legit number one playmaker for LSU and and they needed that they needed somebody to step up on the perimeter and and he did the other day and they've been spreading the ball around a lot so far I know it's just one game but 10 different guys catching a pass uh next in line after M excuse me after kyen Lacy was Mason Taylor and everyone's expecting a big jump from him obviously now in his draft year Junior's eligible for the Senior Bowl what do yall like about Mason Taylor yeah you know with going back to the spring with Mason being at the pro day for Jaden's pro day and they they ran that pass game script with you know with neighbors and Brian Thomas and all those guys to me the guy that stood out was Mason Taylor you know because in last year's offense he was really just kind of a checkdown player for them I didn't break down the percentage of catches but man it seemed like everything he caught was in the flat like you never saw this guy run seams or get downfield so it was good to see him do that a little more um on Sunday against USC obviously a really natural athlete he's smooth he's fluid he catches the ball really well so he's going to end up being one of the top tight ends in this draft class and again if if that ends up being a top 100 pick he's gonna he's GNA have to consider leaving um I don't want to I don't want to jump the gun but man that that tape from the against the Trojans on Sunday was really good what do you see from a blocking standpoint for Mason Taylor yeah I saw more toughness and effort than he shown and that's going to be a big deal because just being in NFL draft rooms like I was in my time in the NFL I mean it's hard to sell a tight end when he's just a pass catcher I mean they really have to be elite like matchup problems kind of like Kyle pittz when he was coming out of Florida to be drafted really high I mean tight ends coaches just don't want to deal with those guys if they feel they need to teach them how to block so I saw a lot more out of Mason Taylor then I saw a lot out of a lot of other guys in the tight end class from last weekend I'll tell you that one more on the offense and we'll switch to the defensive side of the ball to wrap up kind of a similar player how we set it up with kyen Lacy when we look at Miles Frasier at at Right Guard Frasier and going into his third season at LSU now you know could have left obviously anytime before but sticks it out further development and I know that he's one of the guys y'all said took the biggest jump for LSU Sunday he did and this is this is going to surprise some folks but but uh watching that tape from Sunday our staff thought that Miles Frasier was the best lineman on the field for LSU we thought he played the best he came off the ball with more aggression and physicality than we've ever seen him come off the ball that was really cool to see he was moving people he was anchoring in pass protection definitely the best game we've seen Miles play over the last two or three years of watching him so so again on a line with you know the two tackles Jones and Campbell and and delinger I mean that's a that's a really good offensive line to say that this guy was the best guy on Sunday saying a lot what kind of does the future maybe hold for him I mean I guess it's just you know how high can he really get to in a draft perspective with 11 games left to play in college yeah I me just depends on if he continues to put that kind of stuff on tape I mean we've had we've had some good LSU offensive lineman the Senior Bowl going back to like Damen Damen Lewis ly cushenberry and and uh you know a couple years ago you had uh Bradford go to the go to the Seattle Seahawks I mean so you've had some interior go and get drafted in those you know that third fourth round range and uh I don't think that's out of the realm of possibility I mean I think right now if the draft were today he'd be more of a late round guy but uh again the tape was significantly better on Sunday than it than it was in past year so like all this stuff we we need to wait and see it was one game but it was one game to get pretty excited about talking about Jim naggie the executive director of the rees's Senior Bowl 2025 Senior Bowl Set for February 1st you go ahead and start making plans get over there in 10 always a first class event we of course let you hear more about that as we get closer to the game one more for you Jim we'll switch to the defensive side of the ball and same vein as kind of the other guys taking big steps and that's Savon Jones all over the field Sunday night two sacks a pass defense any noticeable difference that you saw in Savon Jones's game Sunday from previous years very similar to Miles Fraser more physical and using his length better using his hands better you know you look at Kevin peoples who just came over this offseason from Missouri he did an unbelievable job a year ago with with a defensive lineman at Missouri by the name of Darius Robinson who was uh really the he was the he was the player of the week at the Senior Bowl last year like the the practice player of the week in Mobile ended up going in the first round of the Arizona Cardinals and starting off the year he was probably a fourth or fifth round pick he made a huge jump um under coach peoples and so between coach peoples and Bo Davis they've done a great job I mean because he he looked like a different guy as well I mean I sound like a broken record but it was it was noticeably different effort in performance and production than we saw a Savon a year ago so another guy another guy we're excited about because they lined him up all over the place and he he harassed the quarterback from multiple alignments and um the NFL loves guys like that he's he's going to bring a lot of Versatility we'll get you out of here on this one Jim just I mean anyone over there watching the game film a kind of an overall thought that maybe y'all had on the Improvement LSU's defense game one under Blake Baker as opposed to last year under under Matt house anything really noticeable stand out Blake's one of my I mean I think the world of him man what he did at Missouri the last couple years was awesome I'm glad you guys got him back I would say they looked more cohesive even though Miller Moss had a good day that guy's a good quarterback man and just like just like you're guy nut me I mean Moss can put the ball where he wants to put it but they just they just it seemed cleaner back there it seemed like the communication was better not as many breakdowns um so if I were to pick out one thing that's probably what I'd say week one a lot of people are excited about the uh potential for them to just keep getting better over the next 11 games Jim we appreciate the time as always thank you we'll talk soon all right Matt good luck thank you that is Jim naggie the executive director of the Reese's Senior Bowl with our kickoff 3 hours and 35 minutes away Kansas state had an interception in the end zone to turn back two lane and win that game 34 to 27 now we're uh we've got our eyes on Iowa and Iowa State well let me back up here Arkansas missed a field goal in overtime uh Oklahoma State's got the football they're about to attempt what will be a game-winning field goal from I believe 32 yards uh yeah they they're they're on their they're on the uh the 24 yard line oh wait the 24 yard line okay 40 41 uh 41 yard field goal there and we're watching Iowa and Iowa State that's on CBS Big 10 on CBS you know what that means that mean it means that when they do they wave to the kids at the hospital at the end of the first quarter by the time the game's over they will have changed shifts at the hospital three times that's let's bring him out musona uh scone how you doing the length of games on CBS and the quality of the road conditions on Nicholson Drive nothing triggers hand Alabama don't forget Alabama don't forget Alabama there there's there's pavement on Nicholson Drive I I should give credit where credit is due it only took him two years uh scone uh with a with a week to digest this uh game against USC do you feel differently uh you know how you feel about what took place in Las Vegas a week ago I mean mostly disappointed but on the the caliber of the team as a whole probably about the same way I did I thought that was going to be a one- score game it ended up being a one- score game I just thought at the end of the game yes we're going to Drews house sorry that's what happens when you you ride your kid around um I I thought it was going to be a one- score game it ended up being a onore game I just thought the quality of LSU's offensive line would be the difference late in LSU would be able to run the ball run the clock and win a close game and the opposite happened you just had tip USC and Miller Moss they made the plays late to get the win and LSU distance but I feel I feel like pretty much everything we thought about LSU in Fall Camp was kind of affirmed in that game I think Garr nm's good the receivers are good they got 10 you know 10 different players caught passes the defense is much improved so you know onward Oklahoma State misses the 41 yard field goal they did double overtime coming in water uh Arkansas LED this game 21 to7 at the half and we're going to double overtime um Matt we've had this discussion with with Gordy with Richard with there the the reasons that LSU was not able to run the football as well as we thought that they might anything from Garrett NM not keeping at times to the tight ends to the alignments that USC was playing what do you attributed too I I mean hany look a lot of the plays that that we have highlighted I think you can attribute to numbers in the Box I mean one of the plays that everyone highlights is the John Emery third and one tfl and that wasn't like it was a poorly blocked play it was you had a young guy in camor and pimpton lined up at right tight end and the defensive end had no respect for nus Meyer's ability to run the football and so they came right inside of camor and pimpon and hit John emry for a loss so so I mean I don't think it was as bad as maybe were making it out to be I thought they stayed balanced in the second half offensively John Emery busted the big play I know the whole you know you take away the big play and I Jacob Hesters trained me well you don't take away the big play because maybe all the other plays set up the big Play It's All it all works in concert so I don't know man I I expected them to be able to run it late and put the game away they had a negative play on that first down which created a second and 15 pimpton had the 14 yard reception you had the third one you're trying not to be predictable by Personnel so you leave pimpon in there and the end crashes right inside of him and the guy who's not a great blocker yet gets his running back crushed I mean it was disappointing but I think those are teachable I think we probably would have been saying the same thing about Mason Taylor two years ago as a matter of fact we were on the Block P against Florida State so you know it's disappointing but I still think when Brian Kelly said this week the strength of the offense and the strength of the team is going to be the running game I believe it I think this offensive line is veteran and really good and I hope you have enough depth at running back to make through the Seas due to the injuries and one first half suspension we're going to see some new Personnel tonight let's start with the offensive guys we're going to see Kaden Durham we're going to see Jawan Johnson we're going to see Shel Samson who I know you're a big fan of going way back to the beginning of his high school career so what are you expecting SL hoping far out of the offensive freshman tonight okay I'm glad you said freshman because I thought you were gonna say uh or or just the the newcoms I thought you gonna say out of the offensive hole because what I want to see is the the first teamers score a bunch of points get the hell with their healthy acl's out of the game as quickly as possible that's that's what I want to say yeah and then and then I really am excited to see the young guys offensively Sheldon Samson is athletically as gifted a receiver as LSU had he had to get stronger to be able to make contested catches through contact he has to hold on to the ball but he's going to get an opportunity tonight and he's going to be athletically Superior to everyone he faces I think this is a really good breakout opportunity for Shelton and then I am very excited about the young running backs we didn't get to see Kaden Durham get a carry last week and I very excited about Jawan Johnson as well I'm sure youall talked about it guys but they moving him to running back and that was a dude that set the Louisiana High School record for yards and for touchdowns he he may not know the the terminology the play call but there is an innate ability some guys have when the ball is in their hands to be special and he is that and I am very excited to see those two guys in particular tonight hopefully get the carries for the entire second half and put on a show Johnson I who I when I saw him in high school I'll tell you who he reminds me of and I said this earlier in the show he remind reminds me a great deal of shyon Ky when Carrie was at Shaw and Shaw and Cary was a phenomenal high school player he's a good college player but he's a phenomenal high school player that's who he reminds me of with the instincts and the elusiveness and all that I I don't know you know how he turns out but I'm excited to watch him play as well were you out there this would have been probably the second maybe the third practice of the fall when Samson went up and made that that catch and came down hit his head hard had to leave the practice were you out there that day Matt it Hy it was the first practice the first not only Not only was it the first practice it was quite literally the first period of the first practice the media got to see and I'm asking because it seemed like boy he he was you know he looked apart and and it was a great play and all that and then you know sometimes those head injuries will linger a little bit and it seemed like we didn't hear Too Much from him in the you know the time right after that I'm just wondering maybe I'm reading too much into it if that was you know something that kind of lingered with him a little bit through August maybe uh he was back out so that was as we mentioned literally the first drill of the first day and he they went backto back passes to him down the right sideline and he caught 5050 balls both of them were beautiful um and it opened a lot of people's eyes because that's what I think we all knew Shelt needed to to work on a little bit was the the physicality in the receiving game but he was back out there the very next day hannie so I don't know that I would look and say that it was anything it didn't it didn't keep him out they took him out of practice for the rest of that day right maybe I really just think it's more of a hat tip to Kyle Parker who just outplayed him the rest of the way in Fall Camp so earn that opportunity when Chris Hilton got injured I think what it speaks to though is just the embarrassment or riches they have as far as Talent at the receiver position it's why when you lose neighbors and Thomas you don't worry it's like why when you lost Jefferson and chase you don't worry it's just like it's for more than a decade here it's just been okay well who's next and they always have the whoever is next let's flip sides uh Jordan Gilbert's going to miss the first half because of the targeting penalty kylin Jackson who I know you're a big fan of and Deshawn Spears figure to see some time tonight they're big rangy ones are true freshman the others are red shired freshman I know you've seen a lot of them in practice what do you think so I my comparison for Deshawn Spears I'm not putting this expectation on I'm just saying that when I saw him as a freshman Ball Camp it reminded me of Eric Reed as a freshman I mean like a guy who physically is put together and looks like whenever the game slows down a bit he's going to be ready to roll and if you remember in 2010 by the time they got to November Eric Reed had become a starter in that secondary it would not surprise me one lick if Deshawn Spears it's similar remember when Gilbert was ejected for targeting Spears is the one who went in against SC on Sunday so if you actually go back and watch Woody Mark's game winning touchdown the the last line of defense at who hits marks at the goal line was Deshawn Spears so I'm very very high on Spears as far as kylin Jackson hany we saw him in Fall Camp they moved him around a bunch he not only played Safety he played uh he also played some star position so we saw them use him as a Blitzer from that star role backing up major burn so I think there's a chance you could see both those guys on the field at the same time not necessarily playing the same position I love the spears comparison to re I'll give you another one sizewise he's about the same size as luron Landry was when he was a freshman who also was an impact freshman not that we've put too much pressure on Spears here in this segment it's only two of the first rounders like yeah man there you go come on I mean we we're not we're not we're not even being remotely close to Fair here but he's he's a talented young man and we're looking forward to seeing him okay uh any anything else that uh they caught your attention before we uh before we move on uh from the first week I don't know that they've announced anything as far as Garrett Dinger I know Brian Kelly say was questionable if he doesn't start my guess is that's going to be Tyrie Adams and they've sort of cross trained him he's all through fall Camp he ran a second team left tackle behind Will Campbell and he flashed he's a second year guy of St a they when when delinger got dinged up a little in Camp they moved Adams with the first team at Right Guard I'm going to be very interested to see him because guys look you're losing fourar starting offensive lineman off off of this team next year whoever is going to be in that next wave I'm not obviously you're thinking about this season but you have to constantly be in that mode of getting guys ready when you have the opportunity this could be a really good opportunity for Tyree Adams at Right Guard if in fact Dinger doesn't go yeah and you know he was um like you said cross trained I even toyed around with the idea that they might get him another number uh and put him in as a third goal line just to get him in the game but now he's too I think he's almost too high up the depth chart to do that but I'm not going to be surprised Matt if they take an A A receiver's number and keep it handy for another lineman because if they want to run 12 Personnel or 13 Personnel in goal line or short yarded situations they ain't got the horses to block it at the tight end position right now they may take a lineman and move them there like Dylan Gordon ask there or I mean yeah but I'm thinking about somebody else but yeah go ahead well Dylan Gordon Dylan Gordon obviously was a a tight end in a tight end number but but Kelly or Les Miles just beefed him up to 300 pounds so I mean that's a I don't know that they have that guy but look I mean they did this last year with Conor Gall remember the kid they brought in from Joo who they had eyes on making him a tackle eventually I Mo I think we talked to him on AFR where he said that like he wanted to be ultimately an offensive tackle he just had to gain weight yeah I and maybe it's more of a Josh D roic type of deal that's a good um and you know maybe maybe one of the maybe one of the backup linemen uh puts a different number shirt on in goal line and and short yardage situations I'm just you know just throwing it out there throwing that out there maybe a guy helpful on Third and one last week maybe a guy who's you know had a long Legacy with LSU football I'm just see this throwing it out there all right it's going out the game whiskey and wine uh you you and uh T-Bob recovered from last week I was fine uh I think T-Bob had a little bit T-Bob as he said to me got Vegas and I don't think anybody's surprised that T-Bob got Vegas but um yeah we'll be at Don Juan uh glad to be back in town so as soon as the game goes final we'll fire it up on the 1045 ESPN YouTube and Facebook so uh hope everybody can join us all right Matt appreciate it we'll talk to you next week okay guys Oklahoma State wins uh Arkansas fourth and Oklahoma state scored went for two made had to go for two made it and at 3931 Arkansas had a fourth and one from about the was it the 16 they were they were inside the 20 yes they were ins I I don't remember exactly they were inside and they got stuffed and so that's the ball game let it 217 at the half lose it 3931 turnovers yeah I mean turnovers in that game for Arkansas you can look at the two games kind of mirrored each other although this one was more high score a little bit more high scoring two lane lost a game on a turnover Arkansas lost a game on a turnover that you can argue Tulane I think did outplay Kansas State today I mean you look at the yard stick they were 100 yards better than him yeah I haven't seen a yard stick for for this game but Arkansas for a large at least a large portion of this game outplayed Oklahoma State lose a game on turnover South Carolina 700 on 1045 ESPN Baton Rouge now from OTB here's T-Bob AAR it's Nicholls week baby if this game doesn't fire you up nothing will hell yeah um okay let's not be flippant about it for a second though in all seriousness there there's going to be nothing this weekend that is going to make you feel better um really this is one of the like in the macro right like this is one of those games that can only make people feel worse um if you go out there and you have one of those kind of games that we used to have uh in the miles era where you kind of struggle to put one of these bad teams away and everybody get all up in arms and all angry and so as a whole tiger Nation will not be satisfied right but we are a sports show we get granular we talk about this team in every instance we break down a game for hours a single game so I I guess the point is we can engage with like what kind of incremental improvements you want to see and let's have the discussion what do you want to see against nles because we haven't talked about it much and for me uh it starts with this I've heard a lot of people um talking to me Jake about getting away from the run and a lot of talk of Les Smiles offense and Etc ETA two things first off threw the ball over 30 times I was going to say first off I never felt like the play calling was conservative I felt like it lacked execution at times I didn't love the third and one call if he wanted to like highlight a actual call that I didn't like but otherwise I like Joe Sloan's uh I like I like the game call I didn't always love how it was executed obviously the Red Zone you got to finish some of these very good drives that you put together so very clear as Improvement but this idea of getting away from the run I don't agree with and I feel though like it's kind of my fault because I've set up here and called LSU average run blockers and I I I still think that's true but I think Jake I actually think USC had a pretty good front seven and I don't think many of the front sevens that you will face this year will be much better or and many won't be as good right and I think you'll only get better at run blocking with more time on task and continuing to do so and I think you have to and I think it has to be a part of this game so like no I don't want to see LSU get away from the run I want to see them have a lot of success on the ground I need one of these running backs to start to gain some confidence now that John Emery is out so if you have listened to me this week and I have made you think that LSU is just crap at running the ball I don't think that I'm just disappointed again because my ex expectations were higher it goes back to the exact thing we were just talking about like in a vacuum their rushing stats pretty good but I had the expectation that they would be mauling that they would be like kind of dominant they beat USC in every Russian category yes yeah that's what I'm saying but we did expect dominance because it was your best unit and because you were doing some things that were different from a year ago and also like those things are new to them in a game situation yes and so continue to work on those things I think you continue it because you're going to need it to win games down the road uh you have to get the running back's reps as well in game situations and these tight ends need to get reps in this situation like pimpton needs to get reps green needs to get reps in the run game again I I know that a lot of people if you didn't watch the tape and if you just kind of box score watch and you just go off The Narrative of the game you only want to blame the offensive line do they need to block better yes but T you and I both did a deep dive into the film they do that tight ends need to get a lot better not just a little better the running backs need to get a lot better in Reading their keys and different things and so those are things that you need to continue to work on because you're going to have if you want to beat Old Miss or Alabama or A&M or Oklahoma any of those teams you're going to have to run the ball successfully I agree a thousand per. um I also look I want to see Garrett NM build some confidence too man because he was it's got to be a tough place for nus to be mentally right now because he was so sharp so good so dominant I mean he ended up on a lot of top five lists for people throughout the country in terms of the best quarterback performances over the weekend he only had like two throws really I would say his biggest mistakes were the second and eight throw and then maybe not pulling the ball on like third and three in the first drive where he could have pulled it and just dumped it to Mason Taylor for like a probably 30 yard gain but like again that's a hell of a first start against what I thought was a very well- coached defense with de Lyn and USC field that you have to give credit there and so I want to see nus be able to be a little dangerous air it out a little bit connect on a couple deep balls and he too just gets some positive momentum and some kind of um fun onfield success to build off of I think he can certainly gain stuff as well but I mean he probably feels pretty good about where he's at as a player like he's going to want to strive to continue to get better but as a quarterback he's going to watch that tape and feel like he played a pretty good game and he's going to you know also crush his self because that's the way quarterbacks are made about those two plays he's going to want to be perfect yeah but there's certainly still things that he can continue and I'm sure like he can take more chances knowing that what the game situation is like against USC it's like okay can I can I take a chance this feels like one chance one way or the other is going to decide this game it's not going to be the case this weekend um what do y'all want to see Okay so we've talked a lot about the offense and so we kind of know what we need to see not not want to see you need to see defensively I think I would like to see the you know the defensive backs gain some more confidence I think the corners were there A lot of times to make the play going back to the tape I thought the corners were in position to make plays Young Players let's see if you can go make them USC's receivers went and made them and you didn't that was the story of the game but you were there the safety position I think that has to go way up I think that is a position that you have I don't care who the opponent is you've got to show that you can be in position that you can make whatever gamechanging play that it might be that you can change direction that if you're beat you can still recover like all of those things because we didn't see that from that position group nah man I I still think we got to get Sage R to Safety in in out of corner I mean if there was a corner who looked like he was kind of just straight up beat more off to the knot it was it was probably sage and without that safety group struggled like he would be one of the better coverage saf it just feels like that in an ideal world that almost has to happen I want to see the linebacker group play more like weeks did yeah I I want to see Penn and Perkins play with some heavy hands deliver some pop uh I I want I want to see when when Perkins is rushing him him being more decisive too many times you'd kind of get to the line and just tail off or start looking over I I want to see him look like a bat out of hell with his hair on fire yeah I wholeheartedly want to see that because it was with bad intentions and that's how USC's front seven played yeah and that was the advantage for them and you turn on the filmm for LSU and 40 was the only one playing on his front foot yeah it was a little too much reading still maybe you know bad habits hard to break and I know that's not Baker's style Baker's entire style is aggressive create havit dictate to the offense and so yeah I would like to see everybody else play in the vein of a weeks or savan Jones who also played with his hair on fire all night long and even guys that you know are maybe like somewhat limited talent wise that I would I would say Gio pz played about as hard as he could as well so so the the these are just a couple of things that I I think like again there are going to be some people that are going to look at tomorrow's game and it's going to be a non-starter and they're not going to care about it either way right but I love college football this time only comes once a year and I cover this team so in depth that I do find tomorrow still to be very interesting even if it's not quite as fun because I don't feel like you know I I don't feel any anxiety over it I don't feel like a pit in my stomach that reminds you that you're alive but like it's it's very analytical I'm excited I'm excited to see where the uh where the small improvements take place like next time out you're going to be on the road in the SEC yeah yeah so exactly right so like what do we need to see to get you ready for that trip The Windsor Senior Living Community in mandaville Louisiana Louisana back here go 98.1 game day earlier this week Matt sat down with Nichols head coach Tim Rebo coach it's always a pleasure thanks so much for a few minutes how are you hey doing well Matt thanks for having me man I appreciate it it's our pleasure we appreciate you making time espe a game week um you know what I love I was looking at your roster today it looks like a Louisiana Allstar team you know what I mean Brother Martin Dutchtown destrahan Curtis Catholic Hannah you know what I mean it's just like you were just it's such a feeder in the state how big of an advantage is the dirt is this state for your program it's huge you know I I was just discussing the other day going back into the 90s when I was here as an assistant I said everybody used to come into the state of Louisiana to recruit because it's such a hot bed in south Louisiana and we were we were going out of state to get kids I said something's wrong with this picture you know so if I had a chance to do it I said I'm gonna try to recruit locally uh and see if we can get some good players and you know how many they have right here and it doesn't it doesn't pay for us to go to Houston and get a third fourth fifth best player over there when we got him right here in our backyard and you know we have we we hit some home runs with with some of these players who might have been an inch too short short a step too slow but really good football players uh develop them and look you know that too they're going to stay here and and then when they done playing they coming back here uh so that's what makes it so sweet I mean a lot of those names we know uh Guggenheim uh Spears if you're a Louisiana High School football fan you know a lot of these names it was so interesting like your roster is loaded I mean get 12 preseason First Team all 12 preseason in first team All Conference players is is it fair to say that this is at least in the preseason depth veteran leadership experience is this your best team uh it might be the best we were talking about it the other day too might be the one of the best defensive teams we've had since we've been here and we've had some Marquee players uh you know say across the defensive line with Sully Les and linebackers Alan Pitman but you know not as many we're we're deep across the line linebackers depth in the second death uh we can really run I really like our defense and and probably not you know we got some skill guys but not as loaded on the offensive line um as we are on the other side of the ball um Tim Rebo is our guest here where um when you're building your roster I'll talk about the game here in a second but I would love to ask also just your approach with with everything with the portal how has that or has that impacted the way you recruit your roster it really hasn't because we've we've always been uh recruit local recruit high schools you know we build those relationships with the coaches and with the kids and try to get them to come here uh and now even more so we're going to do it because I think in today the the big guys bigger than us they're not recruiting the high school athletes as much you know they're going to go get him a guy maybe at maybe from UL to go to LSU because they can build some depth a guy that has two or three years of college experience rather than get a high school guy so we've always recruited the high schoolers and uh even more so now do you worry about I don't know if worry is the right word but about your roster getting plucked pillaged guys I I think you have to I think you have to worry about it um but but I'm not gonna lose sleep over it because I figure like this Jaylen Spears from Brother Martin conference play of the year last year if some comes get him after this year look he he's given us two really good years meaning we have we doing something right and winning some football games you know so we have to just keep developing but you know we're not the only ones I think I think everybody's a junior college now in in in college because if somebody's gonna always have a a little bigger bag maybe a say to get to get some of these guys uh Tim Rebo is with us Nichols head coach in his 10th season as the head coach of course as he mentioned a previous stint there before also going to Monroe and Lafayette um by the way you've you've got experience uh in Tiger stadium if I'm not you tell me if I'm wrong 03 ULM 06 and 09 with the cinjun those three experiences in Tiger St M there was another anything stand out from making a visit as an instate opponent to to Baton Rouge no I listen uh great venue great place to play I I I do think this um it's not like I was at the University of Alabama in the Crimson to is coming in Tiger stadium you know it's it's it's not A&M coming into there when when we came in and it's could to be the same thing this weekend it's going to be loud they're gonna be getting off on us you know but when you have the first kickoff and you go down there and you make that first hit I think some of that's gonna wear off and and I don't know if they're gonna be as loud boy I shouldn't say that huh I don't know if they G be as loud as they hey hey we get down in the South End Zone who knows huh yeah man um it sounds like you've been down to that South End Zone a few times um you know what but I I was also looking because often times we know we know like smaller programs rely on these games for for the financial implication we know all that um but you haven't really made it a habit of of doing this uh you played TCU last year but prior to that I think it was three years you went without playing a power five of course we remember you beat Kansas back in 2018 but it's it hasn't been as common so what is your scheduling thought philosophy when it comes to games like like this against a one of the the power four power five whatever you want to call it you know I really wish we could play just one one game on the road against one big thing you know the experience uh develop our players and it's going to help us down the road you know when you got a play last year we did we played TCU and we played tlane you know we we played some uh before we played Texas A&M we played South Alabama you know we played those schools so um I like it for our guys I like for us to travel a little bit I really like uh what we did this year playing two instate opponents right away I think it's good for our program you know they familiar with the with the schools uh you get a lot of publicity like like this week we're getting you know for our program and then for us you know going the payday to go to Baton Rouge where you know we're making it a day trip Matt we just we're going on Saturday you know so you don't have a flight you don't have to pay hotels you don't have all the expenses so it can help you program does it mean more for your guys to be able to play that it is LSU and not just a power program like you I mean you played A&M Georgia Colorado I mean you've gone all over does it mean more that it is LSU absolutely I mean look you said we have 90 something I think we got like 93 players from Louisiana well of course they all grew up I think the majority uh LSU you know wanting to play in Tiger stadium they they they know what it is so to get a chance to go back to play the flagship School the state school right right here in the backyard I think it's going to be exciting for him and and you know what it's going to do to all the parents all the people working Up and Down the River all the the stuff that's been going on all the tailgating I I think it's a win-win situation for us Tim reo's with us for a couple more minutes of course three-time conference Champion there at Nichols done an amazing job in his decade on the Bayou um did you so you mentioned playing two in state schools for those who don't know Nicholls open last week against Louisiana Tech in a really good ball game uh did you learn anything about your team last week yeah I I learned uh how hard we played the effort again the no quit then the the fight that they have in them uh I know we can really run on defense uh can really get after it a little bit and I and I do think we're going to be okay on offense you know sometimes uh you know you go to a game and you come out and say I don't know I'm not sure I think we're going to be all right we'll be able to move the ball now the thing is too you know uh we're going to be able to show some improvement this week the old saying from week one to week two but it just might not show up because of the opponent that you're playing sure um what are the biggest challenges as as you game plan for LSU that you and your staff face uh they they're so big and athletic you know they they're so strong up front uh on the defensive and offensive lines I worry about that I think in in these type of games that that's where the difference is look we have some skilled players they have tremendous skill players but uh I think it's up front and I worry about that you know trying to line up uh if they just want to just take it and pound the ball right right down your throat or um you know us trying to be able run the football a little bit so uh that that's going to be a big challenge for us coach as uh I don't mean to look too far ahead but obviously there's a lot of people in the state who regardless of their LSU fans whether you cheer for the colonels you cheer for the instate schools when you think about what's ahead for the season after you get past this non-conference part what what excites you about your team when you get into South and Conference play um I I do know South and Conference play has gotten so much better over the years that you know it's the same thing it's a different scale but anybody can beat anybody week in and week out um but we have a lot of experience and we have experience that I like which doesn't always translate but you know we got often a rough start last year uh and then and they resilient and bounce back uh and said hey we're get in the conference we know we can be a good football team so we just got to continue to do the little things to improve the little execution things uh that we can do the communication things that we can do uh to get better each week and hopefully by week five and six when we get into conference play uh we'll we'll be starting to play some really good football yeah October 12th Nichols add in carnate word is when everyone's going to have Circle that's one that will certainly have Big Time conference implications always pulling for you coach can't thank you enough for a couple of minutes today best of luck to you your team this weekend throughout the year thanks [Music] nation the best cup Secret in town is 98.1 Eagle 98.1 game day presented by super Chevy talk and tigers talk and tigers linebacker Whit weeks I mean is definitely rough the first 24 hours I mean you never want to lose and we lost so it was it was a tough 24 hours but at this point we're we're moving on to Nicholls I mean we played them in three days so that that's our main focus right now defensive end Savon Jones felt like the defense approved a lot you know I feel like one of the main ways we improved was because of the trust that we have in each other you know I trust that the backfield is going to be able to do their job and they trust that we're going to be able to do our job tight end Mason Taylor it felt good out there um to get back and running um yeah new offense I think we did um we did pretty pretty well I think uh we just need to fix a little a couple little things and it's all in the details I mean finishing drives and uh being productive in the Red Zone linebacker with weeks a lot of progress I think I think we have a lot more confidence which is the main thing that I can see from last year we have a lot more confidence in not only our abilities but knowing the Playbook so that that's that's huge for us defensive end Savon Jones it's going to be excited to be able to finally play a home game again especially since it's the 100y year anniversary the whole stadium got renovated and it's a local College that's not that far away from us so of course it's going to be packed out so I'm excited to play in that again tight end Mason Taylor I I think he did phenomenal for his first time on such a big stage in Las Vegas I think he did a great job of um shutting out all the noise and all the things that that we worked on so I think he definitely did a great job um um I think um as long as as an offense as long as we like I said close out those drives and finish the game when it needs to be finished I think we'll be just fun linebacker Whit weeks oh I can't wait I mean that that's my favorite place on Earth playing in front of 100,000 people it's it's the greatest feeling in the world like I've said before so I cannot wait I'm excited defensive end Savon Jones I feel like the key for me is just to you know not not get a big head you know just just as people can have a bad game one bad game and the rest of the season be good somebody can have a good game and the rest of the season be bad and I feel like I understand that so I just need to continue working on a little things and try to be consistent tight end Mason Taylor we're really excited to get back um show the fans what they deserve um really just focusing on ourselves right now um as a team and just um going out there and executing and worried about what we have to do um on the field uh Saturday night linebacker whid weeks uh we got to execute better uh we had great effort but at the end of the day we weren't able to ex when it mattered most so we just got to go out there this week and execute at a high level and then continue to uh throughout the season just continue to execute at a high level defensive end Savon Jones we don't mourn our losses for that long because we know that it just as much bad thing that happen out there is just as much good thing I feel like we had a lot of effort and enthusiasm going out there and you know we just need to work on finishing our discipline tight end Mason Taylor I think we moved on pretty pretty fast I think think on Monday everyone's heads were up and we know what we have to do our our main focus is still to make the playoffs and it hasn't changed so I think as long as we uh focus on the things we have to do it might be a little hard of a path now but I mean we're up for the challenge talk Tigers Eagle nothing with three minutes to go Trevor ATN did play in this game five C carries for 78 yards after missing the opener with a suspension early in the fourth quarter Ball State leads Missouri State 28-21 it's St Francis over Kent State 23-4 halftime score UNLV leading Utah Tech 44-7 minute 30 to go in the first half Northern Illinois continues to lead on number five Notre Dame 13-7 2 minutes to go to the Break in Salt Lake City number 11 Utah dominating Baylor 23 to nothing they got a scoring threat in the Baylor 36 yd line right before half little under uh three minutes to go uh at Iowa score is H Iowa 10 and Iowa State nothing muso tell me they're allowed to practice in offense in Iowa right I yeah I mean the state legislature didn't pass some law that you can't practice hey we've seen some forward passes from Iowa today none of them complete a few of them not very many um that's fair Iowa Iowa State has I think three first downs and Iowa has neither team is at 50 rushing yards and there's two and a half minutes to the break anyy me I like I like good defense as much as the next guy but it's tough to watch yeah number 22 Louisville leading Jacksonville State 28-7 Cal leading Auburn at Jordan ha 14-7 2 minutes to go to the break there and Cal has the football they missed a short field goal or they would be up two scores uh Auburn's had a hard time moving the football yeah and the difference in the game right now is an interception thrown by pton Thorne uh that that got Cal uh off the field quickly after taking that lead South Carolina leads Kentucky 10 to3 under two minutes to go in the first half in Lexington also two minutes to go in the first half of Maryland and Michigan State those two teams are tied at 14 Washington leads Eastern Michigan 14-6 halftime score Wisconsin leads South Dakota 17-3 Toledo leads UMass 17-10 Boston College leads Duan 35 to nothing these are all second quarter scores North Carolina leads Charlotte 21-6 halftime Idaho leads at Wyoming 17-10 Navy leading Temple 23 to Nothing Texas State a 73 first quarter lead on UTSA end of the first in Oxford number six Old Miss leads Middle Tennessee 17 to nothing couple of touchdowns on the ground for Henry Parish uh Marshall and Virginia Tech are just underway now finals from earlier today number three Texas beat number 10 Michigan 31-2 behind three touchdown passes from Quinn Ur number eight Penn State survived Bowling Green 34-27 was the final there number 16 Oklahoma State beat Arkansas 3931 in double overtime Arkansas stuffed on a fourth and one that would have kept the Go game going tail and green for Arkansas 416 yards through the air but Ali Gordon uh muso was held to 49 yards on 17 carries today so Arkansas played some pretty good defense on you know preseason All-American back yeah they absolutely did I mean and it was interesting that Oklahoma State kind of hard time getting him the ball early in that game but I'm glad he at least ended up with 17 touches but that's good for Arkansas for sure number 17 k State beat two-lane 34-27 a terrific game down at yolman Stadium uh two-lane quarterback Damen menah had a phenomenal day right up until the point where he was sacked and fumbled and Kansas State scooped it up and scored a touchdown on the play that ended up being the margin of difference looked like T Lane had scored the time touchdown they reviewed that wiped wiped it out and I think it was the right call um then they had a penalty they backed them up and they threw in reception in the end zone uh with 5 Seconds to go as Kansas State comes away with a hardfought win Syracuse beats number 23 Georgia Tech 31 to 28 Ohio State transferred quarterback Kyle mcord 381 yards and four touchdowns Minnesota shut out Rhode Island 48 to nothing ruter beat akan 4917 pit beat Cincinnati by a point 28- 27 it was Memphis over Troy 38-17 Army beat Florida Atlantic 24-7 and Texas M beat mcne 52-10 Conor Wagman only 125 yards in what was a short day for him this game was 38 to nothing at the half and last night if you were watching there was some terrific football not Indiana in Western Illinois Indiana 177 to3 uh but BYU and SMU BYU beat SMU 18-5 very hardfought game uh BYU uh got the got the win SMU a lot of people thought this was going to be a big year for this first year uh in the ACC they did not score a touchdown in the game last night BYU eight tackles for loss and Duke uh beat Northwestern 26- 20 in double overtime God bless Northwest you see the stadium they put the St I was yes I was hoping you'd bring it up I mean they're going to be for two years handy too and that's like high it's I don't even know if it's high school there's bigger High School stadiums than what they're playing in there way bigger High School stadiums all right so is it it's cool that it's on Lake Michigan I was going to say is it really cool or is it really hokey cuz they could have found other places to play they wanted to put this thing up and you see the overhead view it's really cool with the the visuals of the lake and all that stuff but it doesn't hold I I don't know maybe 5,000 yeah I was to say8 something like that it's also going to be bitterly cold in a couple weeks when the wind starts coming off Lake Michigan in I'm not going to be there I just like ridiculous though would it's going to be cold and Chicago Mountain Cold refreshment made to chill and we return here at ral's your Le bearish countdown to kickoff 2 hours and 25 minutes bring in former tiger Richard Dixon he'll be joining me on the post game following LSU in niichel state Rich good afternoon how you doing doing good man watching some good football today what okay before we get to the the other stuff uh you know the LSU stuff what uh what have you seen the day that you like didn't like uh we we watched it was a doozy in Still Water uh for sure yeah I mean Arkansas is going to be a good football team this year the quarterback's running really well uh Bobby patrino has brought another level to that offense it's aggravating because that's going to be somebody that you know we're going to have to worry about but uh that two-lane game was awesome I mean of course the games I'm talking about the teams I wanted to win both lost right it was really good football yeah uh and we're watching uh Cal is leading Auburn uh there's uh less than 25 uh less than 30 seconds to go to have 25 seconds now to go to the half and C's got the lead on Auburn all right Rich we we dissected this by the way Richard and I doing a podcast now uh film review you'll be able to watch it on YouTube this year so you can go check that out subscribe to it uh you can get the audio only on Louisiana sports.net 1045 espn.com we're going to drop those starting on Monday afternoon a little bit behind this week because of the Vegas trip Rich we looked at the film uh together we had some similar thoughts about the Run game and we've talked about that a little bit here today what do you expecting differently if at all uh from LSU in the Run game tonight look I mean it's it's execute those guys you know they talked a big game coming into it I I think nobody really respected USC's defensive front seven and um they showed out and played I mean this is a game to get back to prove what you're talking about go out and execute do your job play with great technique and push the ball down the field all right you talked about how they talked about it in the media and you know when Lincoln Riley comes out in the post game said we didn't didn't talk about I didn't think that will Campbell went overboard or anything I just thought he said hey we're going to be a physical football team is that a real thing in a locker room when somebody says something like what Campbell said it's not like he called USC out at least I didn't think so what did you think no I I don't think he called anybody out but he was very confident what they could do and anytime someone says they're going to do something you're going to prove him wrong and and I I really feel like you know that's how UFC took it he wasn't disrespectful didn't being wrong he was just very confident in their way that they were going to push the ball they were going to push people around and rely on a run game and UFC stepped up you know it's not like I I think that everybody here would had a problem for going out say man I really hope we can run the football against USA I mean you don't want to say that so want speak to your yeah no doubt I mean you're going to speak to your audience but uh you know I just feel like everybody's talked about this offensive line and look they they were unbelievable in the pass protection getting us might didn't get touched but we want to go out there and see him play be a little bit more bigger bullies in a run game Garrett delinger may not play in this game tonight what happens when you got to replace one guy because these front five pretty much stayed intact all the way through August uh there was there weren't a whole lot of Mis days from that first five the communication Rich when you have to replace one guy on the offensive line you know is not as big as a deal you still got three or five that have been there for a long time um I think communication go easy you're going to rely on your older guys but you're gonna look for guys like Tyrie Adams if he's the guy that steps up to you know listen to the older guys and go out there and play as hard as he can from a a former player I I got this a lot this week about well Brian Kelly's got to do something about the discipline on this team because you can't have guys like Eddie Lacy and major Burns getting major penalties where it really really hurt LSU from a field position standpoint cost them points on a drive he's got to do something you sort of believe it's the players that have got to do something no the players are the one that that are going to e execute the plan they're the ones that are going to police the locker room um look look I didn't like either one of the penalties I thought the taking hel off was dumb the celebration was dumb but uh you know those guys have been around they got to realize what it did to the team and then everybody's gonna please themselves because the coach can't get involv that well and so there's there's a playing time issue right you the coach can put them on the bench but you can't really put KY Lacy on the bench down two receivers and even if that weren't true he's one of your best players so you tell me you guys had this situation come up when you were playing where there was a little bit of you know discipline thing what do the players do to police this stuff when you can't just say man I can't go put that guy on the bench he's he's our best receiver well there's no doubt I mean when you lose Kyle Park and you got Chris Hilton out you can't just go throw somebody into the number one spot so it's something you can't pleas during the game it's placed in the locker room after again you talk about it everybody look those guys care about each other so much people don't realize when when you go through the battles and you go through the practices everybody wants to win so when you really go reach out to that guy you go look man I get it but you you got to realize what you did and you got young kids looking up to you so I think it's going to be okay does it also you talked about this on the podcast that their attitude post incident matters if it's hey I'm just going to do what I want to do that's a lot different from man I promise that'll never happen again no doubt I mean there's guys that I've had few W names that we've told them look get out the meeting just leave we don't need you around you gotta all Buy in you gotta all want the same thing you all got to think about each other and when it gets selfish it's a big deal but when guys respond and they understand they know they're messed up they're apologetic about it it it just move on playing an opponent that is a huge Underdog I know You' talked about your preparation uh for these games didn't change but for the you the grand scheme of things everybody knows LSU is going to win this game but the the how matters uh there there's a great deal of difference in playing well in one of these things and just kind of going through the motions and winning so what do you think LSU's mindset is coming off a loss but this is the home opener so you got that going and you got an outmanned opponent here in nickel State you focus on your role I mean look I've told you a million times that I was just as nervous before we played this game before we played Alabama it didn't matter because I look at it a different way didn't want to be embarrassed this is a game you want to come out next you want to prove that you are 100% prepared on the mental side and you want to be Flawless on the physical side so you go out there worry about your job execute do your role and and take care of business he could just go put the Northern Illinois Notre Dame score up there you go it's it's 13 to7 Northern Illinois at the half and he could say hey look this is my old team look what look what's happened to and they had a big win last week he just put up there I got to be honest I just I just said that because I just wanted another excuse to put the Northern Illinois Notre Dame score on the pregame show it's it's 13 to seven 13 to S 13 to seven Northern Illinois is leading uh Notre Dame I just heard Notre Dame was down I walked outside because my kids were screaming so I haven't but I heard Notre Dame was down um look it can happen to anybody we saw it in 2008 when we played Troy State they came in here up three touchdowns in the fourth once we got our crap together and focused in we scored four and touchdowns and won the game you know the the talent is on one side but you still got to execute and pay attention and take care of your business I've been meaning to fuss at you about that game because that made for a long postgame that night you made you made my job a lot harder that night Rich uh well you know my mom left the game at Halftime she was so mad Bri to River Meadow was so mad when she got home that she walked the dogs she got home okay I don't have to punish you if if Mom took care mom took care of it I don't I don't need to say anymore Rich will hook up with you we'll hook up with you after the game 90 minutes after for uh for game day for post game thanks a bunch Bud yeah man see you in a bit all right uh Iowa 13 to nothing now on Iowa State 30 seconds to go to the half uh in Iowa City we'll take a break come back check in over at the stadium that is next here from Rouse's lending now the bearish countd down to kickoff at uh 2 hours and 13 minutes now here at Rouse's uh Eagle 98.1 game day we bring in the voice of the Tigers Chris Blair Chris good afternoon how are you good Charlie I tell you what this is uh I could take this for an opening home game in September weather extremely mild and looks like a lot of fans uh even though the matchups not Marquee actually thought like well the weather's not going to be a factor let's go out and enjoy some college football so it is uh it's a little more crowded than I thought it would be at this time and you know something else Chris that I wanted to talk about later but let's do it now 100 Years of Tiger Stadium being celebrated all season long so uh I know you've been in the stadium but for those that haven't since last year and that's just about everybody else what can they look forward to tonight because I know the the old guy looks a little different yeah yeah she uh she certainly got a little bit of upgrades and you know I think the number one thing that I think fans will will really notice first is going to be the sound obviously there's been places where depending on where you sit in the stadium you're either having your skin peeled off your face or or you can't hear uh that's been taken care of I think they'll be impressed with the sound secondly of course new ribbon boards the giant video board which again will go full screen at times and have replays and all kinds of crowd prompts and then of course once we get to a Saturday night in Death Valley you gotta love the the LED light show and uh I tell you just getting a brief little preview of what's in store it won't do it justice watching on TV those who are in attendance will I think Come Away saying you know what that was pretty cool so you know the grandest building in college football now is second to none with all of the modern upgrades I think the The Fan Experience they're going to enjoy quite a bit looking forward to that all right let's get to the the game obviously last week wasn't what Brian Kelly and and Company wanted uh you got a chance you get a chance to talk to him during the week coaches show and and all the prep for the game and stuff like that how would you describe uh his attitude I know the the fist pounding got a lot of play nationally in the post game but you've had a chance to talk to him since then yeah you know I think it was a little surprising to me Charlie to be honest you know coming away from Sunday's game that there was a lot of talk that you know he threw a lot of blame at the Players I I didn't sense that what I got from him listening to the actual words was that he was a little upset that they didn't put these guys in better position and you know he talked about it on Thursday night at TJ Ribs you know the running game he he's not giv up on the running game he didn't think it was the best performance individually by the offensive line and maybe even the running backs but he also said they didn't do bad we didn't put him in positions to have success so it almost seemed like to me he was a little frustrated in not maybe utilizing the weapons the way they need to utilize those weapons so again I I felt like he took a lot of the blame but also I think there were some pretty good conversations going on inside the building with the entire coaching staff um so that was my biggest takeaway there were some injuries and there'll be a first half suspension on Jordan Jordan Gilbert so we're going to see some new faces uh and Brian Kelly talked about that a little bit this week as well yeah I think Sage Ryan you're GNA see start the game at safety you know again we saw him start and seen him start a couple of times at the cornerback position he did on Sunday night um I I think they they feel a little better again down a few guys but I think they feel like maybe he can help a little bit more in run support in that safety position as opposed to constantly be on an island with a receiver so that's the one that stands out to me and I expect to see you know three or four deep I've been I've been prepared to to get ready for every quarterback that that's on the roster uh you know depending on how this game goes and and I think we're going to see a number of different guys and it the quote unquote game is on to see a lot of rotation in the secondary uh as well as the receiv with Parker and Chris Hilton still not ready to go I think there's a couple of that we see a lot of not because they can't play but they probably want to give them a little bit of rest so I mean I've got not only my two three and four deep I've got the roster from zero to 99 because something tells me I'm G to have to use it all T night yeah s drawing going to safety I think is a wonderful thing ask me if they can do that permanently that'd be a good idea does this mean that uh Brian Kelly talked about this a little bit on Mon uh Tuesday I believe it was that they're still ramping Z Alexander up I don't know if that means he's ready to play corner I certainly hope it does uh as they move forward but uh who's going to start that other Corner if you've got a I don't know if you've got the the lineups in front of you yet I don't have it in front of me I have Z in that slot I did I was not told that was going to be the nor the the the norm for this game so I'm kind of like everybody else kind of expecting to see or excited to see who they start at that other side with sage moving to the middle of the field so again I've got them all on the sheet we'll see who they go with when they start tonight's game Chris uh we'll turn the Baton over to you guys uh with the network at the bottom of the hour what's coming up on pregame well we got the Dennis shaver going to stop by and see the guys and and talk about you know LSU track and field which coming off in a sensational season season I'm sure you talked about it um as well as well represented in the Paris Olympics so coach is going to kind of talk about his experience I'm sure he had a good time in Perry um and then we're going to get a Scot him report Seth Thomas who who calls the game for Nicholls kind of G to give us a little in depth on on what you know Nicholls will try to do um defense tenacious last week we and te they weren't able to make hay with it but they did Force Five turnovers so they're opportunistic so we'll learn a little bit about the colonels as well and then everything else that Brandon and Marlon and Hunt want to see better here in week two they'll be talking about it Seth Thomas is a very very good friend of mine from a long time back he's from down in my neck of the woods in St Mary Parish when you see him after he finishes telling you about Nicholls have him tell you about how bad my fantasy football team beat his back in the back in the 90s Chris he he introduced it to me so he'll get a laugh uh he'll get a laugh out of that about how bad the wind babies put it on those guys he's a he's a great friend uh and he'll do a great job on the game tonight you guys have a good call and we'll talk to you next week before South Carolina Charlie I'll tell him uh was Charlie the guy that got you out of fantasy football yes I I pushed him into retirement for fantasy football for sure thanks a lot Chris all right uh let's see they have started the third quarter in South Bend Northern Illinois with the football first they are still at half at Auburn Cal leading 14-7 and in Lexington South Carolina the taking now 10 to six Wildcats got a field goal right before the break we'll come back and wrap things up here at Rouse's this is Eagle 98.1 game day when it comes to choosing energy for your family and your home make the Smart all right Mo so what are you looking for uh tonight well we've kind of covered a lot of it hany and the one thing we really have and we talked about all the young players you're going to see what about backup quarterback potentially after for Garett NM I mean I could be interested to take a look at Ricky Collins maybe even a little AJ Swan Chris Blair was they're talking about maybe all of them getting some opportunity so I want to see that and then the other thing is man I think the reps are important for the starters in this game too I mean they need to wipe the bad taste out of their mouth they need to get reps in what's going to be important for LSU going forward Run game Run blocking things of that nature so U Can name their score here but I think the reps are important for everyone communication in the secondary with the young guys there's a lot to watch for but yeah backup quarterback I'll go with that here as we close out the show yeah it's pretty good um because you're right we haven't talked about that that was fluid through most of August uh Collins I'm thinking me too probably uh we'll we'll get the first shout uh and then uh maybe we see the the the third quarterback as well Collins is um you know from right here in Baton Rouge wood so love to love to see him uh get a shot at this uh he is uh he's number 10 I'm going to give you the numbers of the other freshman we expect to play tonight for the first time since if you're in the stands you go wait who was that that guy Kaden Durham uh the Speedster number 29 at running back Jawan Johnson number eight who just moved uh to offense from defense from Lafayette Christian and Shelton Samson another local product from here in Baton Rouge number where did he go to High School uh Catholic High School yeah I appreciate your pronunciation yeah yeah that's not much dick you ain't gonna get that out of me he's number six uh thanks to the folks here at Rouses again your tailgating headquarters
