RETRO REVIEW Snowpiercer Season 1 Is a Fine Downgrade From Bong Joon ho's Film

on Snowpiercer 1,1 cars long the fight to be the superior adaptation is never ending before the Snowpiercer series there was bong junho's film of the same name following up on a bong junho film especially within months of parasite dominating the Academy Awards is high pressure after after all when the movie executed the premise perfectly what more can a multi-season television show do bong Snowpiercer is based off the 1982 French graphic novel lutran penage taking place on a perpetually moving train around the globe during a catastrophic Ice Age the former TNT and now AMC series acts as a reboot of bong's film and an adaptation of the graphic novel attempting to make the best of both worlds Snowpiercer premise throughout the three different mediums Remains the Same the last of Humanity's fight for equality on the train one slight difference that the TV series tries to tackle in its first season foreshadowing the next three seasons plot cycle is expanding the world in the face of Humanity's Extinction Snowpiercer is a well-intentioned message about human greed and classism the apocalyptic world has strong themes of social injustice and class discrimination Snowpiercer is most known for its commentary on class divide and social inequality these themes are heightened by the disastrous apocalypse the remaining humans are living in and Ice Age accident created by scientists own failed attempt to reverse global warming when the atmosphere grew alarmingly colder in pre-apocalyptic times The Eccentric billionaire Joseph Wilford built the train for Rich survivors however right before the departure many people who couldn't afford tickets stormed the train those who survived the Ambush are confined to the lower section tail section of the train dubbing themselves ties those who bought tickets or were personally invited by Mr Wilford reside in the upper class sections Snowpiercer doesn't let viewers forget that there's a strict class divide happening whether in dialogue or set design the atmosphere of the tail and upper class sections are strikingly distinct the tail section is brown and cramped and the upper sections are light and spacious when the leader of the ties Andre Leighton played by Davey Diggs is let out for the first time in over 6 years he's blinded by the sunlight shining through the window of a middleclass car tiles are forced to only eat gelatina squares while everyone else has everyday foods that are now a luxury it's a smart move to use basic necessities and the closed-off environment to highlight the class disparity very early on in the series and it's supported greatly by the apocalyptic circumstances due to a lack of resources the tiles are constantly reminded that humanity is dying off the rest of the train has appeared to have forgotten this because their lives have continued as normal these differences in Lifestyles allow a more philosophical theme to arise Humanity's own innate desire to destroy itself no matter the economic standing or class Association nearly every character displays an unintentional carelessness towards Humanity's survival humans are their own worst enemies as Snowpiercer reminds everyone what brings every class together is not the man versus nature issue that started the Ice Age but a man versus Man issue Leighton is recruited by the cool and Chic head of hospitality Melanie caval Jennifer Connelly to solve a murder case leighton's poorly treated by his superiors often so childishly that it's ridiculous the explicit harassment against Leon and the tiles like Sam roosh's absurd objection to letting the tiles reproduce is laid on too thick sometimes despite Hospitality freezing ta's limbs off as a message and an entitled wealthy teenager mutilating and murdering lower class passengers for fun Snowpiercer still feels the need to say that the rich hate the poor these messages are manifested in cringeworthy monologues and countless verbal battles about the rights of ties viewers aren't trusted enough to pick apart the politics themselves and it lets the story down right when the action starts to pick up
