Florida Gators Defense preview with UF insider Eric Esteban

[Music] [Applause] what's up everybody Welcome to the K's Insight daily podcast powered by Anar and LaVine accident attorneys we are going to continue to break down the Florida Gators with Fox Sports Eric a ston lifelong Gator fanatic expert he breaks it down every position strengths weaknesses I think there's more weaknesses than strengths on that unit but he gives you his side of the story along with some facts to back it up so we'll enjoy that conversation also going to talk about some recent developments in terms of the NFL draft obviously it's a long way away but they're keeping an eye on some of our prospects giving us a good gauge of the talent on the team so we'll break down the Senior Bowl watch list an article that came out about Sam Brown from a respected NFL draft evaluator and we will break that all down first want to talk about some folks that you don't need to break down you know their quality that is Anar and accident attorneys if you were someone you care about has been injured in an accident you could be entitled to significant compensation that 1800 747 free 1800 747 3733 take back control of your life with Anar and LaVine hop in Pete that's the phrase that's the phrase of the week right there yeah man Mike pointed it but uh he he he made it official but listen we did the Mike Ryan podcast yesterday which you guys haven't tuned in every Wednesday we go live for like an hour hour and a half with Mike Ryan the legendary my crying very polarizing in the canes Insight Community but people are watching and I really love those shows kind of go off topic a little bit obviously talk a lot of canes he's a deep Insider he's at practice but we Bounce Around different topics but I gotta say Pete 90% of the comments on the mic videos are about you and wanting more Pete I thought we gave them some more Pete and they said your screen is too small they want to put you on this big TV over here kind of hovering over us they said we need more PS 90% of the comments so what do you think about the Surge and popularity that you're experiencing right now I mean listen I I can't say it was on my uh you know my my uh bingo card uh this year but they call it the Resurgence right so the rebirth I don't know what you wanna where you want to dub it but obviously not The Insider necessarily anymore but uh you know it's it's good to see him being embraced once again all I'll say is this you know I had some Antics on Twitter years ago about the athletic department I think a lot of that stuff turned out to be true um as we as we look back on it now so if you want to be part of the change as always with Kane's connection you can do that but I feel like I was part of the change a little bit the truth tellers are rarely recognized in their time they're reviled people react negatively towards them then retrospect they say they were right so listen all those coaches are gone athletic director gone it is a new era Pete it's gone from a the most attested to the most requested um in this 2024 season as we take it to the top but wanted to kind of go in your wheelous a little bit Pete as far as the NFL draft obviously you worked as an agent for several years still have deep ties into that Community I know you're your buddies with Jim Nei the head of the Senior Bowl and you're familiar with the process so walk us through the Senior Bowl watch list and what it means for the Hurricanes so as I pull up the graphic here 13 guys on this list here and look this this list is not the end all Beall you know there's for example right off the bat I noticed Elijah olon wasn't on there and I think he's a guy who's definitely going to be on the NFL radar and remember this is It's new that underclassman can play in the G in the game right so you see Damien Martinez on this list as as one of the underclassman here and it used to just be that seniors were were the only ones eligible for the game unless a junior was graduating in December right so that's changed now the underclassman are eligible for the game again it's not the end all Beall but it gives you a good idea here D of some of the guys on the radar when the scouts go in there and I think most of these guys have a legitimate shot to get drafted I don't I don't know how many top 100 you know and that's generally when we say top 100 obviously third fourth round range there where you're you're you're essentially that's that's considered an elite type Prospect right not everyone's going to be a first round pick but if you're a top 100 pick those are upper upper echelon prospects a lot of these guys have an opportunity to move themselves up the board but squarely on the radar uh and look we can kind of go one by one here D if you want but it's a nice number so what are your thoughts Omission wise two big ones to me um just looking at some other guys that I see even on this list so you mentioned Elijah Alon he's not on the list actually three big omissions Alon not on the list watching him in Camp the multiple things he can do I think he's certainly someone to watch and is bigger than people think more athletic than people think and he was very productive last year pff's number one rated pass rusher I know PFF has his flaws but look every NFL team subscribes to PFF it's not like it's just a fringe nerd thing anymore and this guy was the number one pass rusher in the entire country and he's got some tools and versatility so I think Elijah Alon Elijah a Royo who I always say is someone who would know I said the name you would know who I'm talking about said that a royal was the best player prospect on the team based on him watching him in practice so I think I understand why he's not on this list because of the injuries you've talked about it but he's the kind of guy that he has let's say he has a good game against Florida or Florida State or or whoever Louisville you know just a nice game tape on a big stage where he shows all the things he can do stays healthy he will rise up the boards very quickly and be I think a higher pick than some of the guys we've seen lately for the canes and a third guy who to me is really huge om Miss [ __ ] is aness cooper aness cooper I I had checked twice to make sure I wasn't missing him this guy he's a junior he's a guard I can see how he kind of slipped through the cracks but this is a guy I mean he was better than Javon Cohen last year who started preseason games for the Browns and he's still significantly taller and has less of the off the field concerns that that you know teams were raising about Cohen so I think Cooper a Royo Altin if those guys stay healthy I think you'll see all three of those guys either next year or if Cooper comes back the following year getting drafted if I had to guess D and obviously again they're allowed to play in the game now but one of the reasons that the NFL this is an NFL decision previously was they didn't want to entice guys but to come out by saying hey you can go play in the Senior Bowl so I I feel like these lists are still going to be heavily senior Laden right I think Martinez was a no-brainer obviously he's a running back you get the stats he a lot of national recognition so yes I I haven't exactly broken down other schools but I'm going to guess that most of these lists Senior Bowl list and you know the shrine game will come out with with with their stuff here soon I'm guessing we'll still mostly be senior lated and kind of like really make them earn it quote unquote or you know that's that's what I'm thinking but I agree with you an S Cooper might be you know as good of a prospect on this team uh right now now for for this next draft so and I'll throw another one out there CJ Clark the defensive tackle for from North Carolina State on Signing Day when he committed I spoke right after he committed I spoke to someone on the Miami staff who had spoken to Scouts and he said that Clark was draftable last year and he was trying to raise his grade so NC State you've seen those guys their defensive tackles tend to get drafted they put out quite a few in the pros lineman in particular on both sides of the ball have been going pro from Carolina state so that's not something unusual I know Clark tested well in high school he was a 4 six shuttle guy at 300 pounds so he's another guy I think you would see so look 13 players on the watch list is is a good number but I think even then it would go up before it goes down as far as the players that'll be in the mix to get drafted and as we're talking about some of these future NFL assets right here D wanted to remind you guys that we are now partnered up with asset Dash the market lead Le in portfolio tracker and Rewards program where you can do everything from Peta you've been learning learning on those Segways very nice job uh another asset to talk about somebody who was on the senior bolt watch list that caught my eye because one of the most respected draft analysts and you could talk more about this Pete Dane Brugler who works for the athletic did his top 50 and the highest ranking Kane on that list was not cam Ward Damen Martinez Rivers anyone like that it was Sam Brown so that to me was uh was very interesting and you can see Scouting Report here but people you know talk about what you what this ranking means to Someone Like You who used to read list like this as part of your job and and about Sam Brown so listen I think that people get caught up on the mock drafts D A lot of times because a lot of it is is opinion based by the people writing it it's it's statistical based production based and they aren't really based on anything from scouts information from scouts right so danne Brugler a guy that I followed closely I've dealt with him you know on a couple of my guys and I know he does his research on guys asking me for for their birthdays and and and things of that nature he puts together his great draft guy guy the Beast every season but from actual Scouts that I've talked to they've told me this guy is really one of the only ones you should pay attention to because he does his research with the scouts and he actually watches it as closely as an actual Scout does so he was always a guy that I put a lot more weight and stock into again these mock drafts a lot of them aren't based on like for example Tyler van djk one when he was getting these top 10 mock draft you know projections so to speak a couple years ago the scouts that I were talking to were saying that's not that's not where he's at right now right that's I wouldn't put him there that's that's that's what a lot of these Scouts were telling me at the time so to me this is a guy that he looks at things a lot more from the scouts view from the scouts lens and to see Sam Brown there at as a top 50 guy already it doesn't surprise me I've been saying I think he's a top 100 type talent but again you read what he says there at the bottom says if the NFL draft were tomorrow the 2025 draft I don't think he'd be one of the first five receivers drafted but he's ready to emerge Ascend so there is some projection going on here but physically as we've said time and time again D I think Brown gives you a different element a different burst yards after catch the body type is is what you like so I think he's a guy who really could take this offense to a different level yeah I know Jerry Sullivan who we talked about in the previous pod the wide receiver Guru some people say he's the best wide receiver coach of all time 80 years old still looks great moves around great uh who's been helping with with the program working with the receivers of course he's a big fan of Sam Brown and his NFL potential and this is somebody who would know spent over 25 years in the NFL Justin Jefferson Anquan Balden Larry V Jerald you name it this guy's coached them so he had very very good things to say about Sam Brown the explosiveness and the juice so you had great receivers already the top two leading receivers in the ACC you add Sam Brown that's a pretty good mix so one to just nice to hear these kind of things during the before the season hope that that buzz continues to build during the season because that means that our guys are producing a lot less NFL Buzz for some of the players we're about to talk about on the defensive side of the ball with Florida Gators but we will break down that Florida Gator defense with Eric eston Fox Sports veteran worked for that he wrote for the Harold ESPN student newspaper at Florida when he was there speaks to the Jal school now so he's got a ton of accolades he'll be breaking down the defense and I do a spot for the hurricane Team Store in there so I won't repeat it but news new deal just came out 75% off this weekend on many items at the hurricane teams toward Miami h ts.com or go to the store on at the thesis across the street so with all that said let's talk to Eric ston all right part two going Behind Enemy Lines to learn about the Florida Gator program talked offense last show you can check that out on YouTube now we are digging into the defense and I'll do the whole introduction again because you deserve it R it back he is the vice president relations for Fox Sports formerly at Scout UF the alligator Miami heral espn.com Palm Beach Post 10 years at Fox Sports Florida Valley on your TV screen gives lectures at journalism School tell them how to make it to the big time down at Florida Commissioner of League machond onetime champion and is a friend of 25 years and the gator source for 25 years Eric eston how you doing good happy to be here part two uh that's quite the intro nailed it uh all one take just the way we like it yeah there you go you're loosened up now ready talk about uh an even better aspect of this Gator team which is the defense right all right I'm bringing a little more pep to this segment was depressing on the offensive side and now the defense is what I understand to be kind of a weak spot last year so let's work on the lies let's work you know you're is a judgment free zone let's go let the com rip you up no defense is where it's at especially for the UF so we'll talk a little bit more about it all right so let's go position by position here starting at a a position where you know I think to me what's interesting about this game team is when I look at the team last year and I say who are the best players obviously Wilson's one mer I think is a good player you lose at the end lose piol and then on the defensive side you lose princ Ley I won't even try with the last name two Old Miss um how big of a loss is that really is that sort of a overstated loss is it is it a real loss and how's this Edge position looking for the Gator D with with princ Ley you know don't let the door hit you you know I think it's one of those this defense is gonna be better um it's gonna be better at all three levels um and specifically about the dline you mentioned princely leaving they're especially high on what they have coming off the edge uh with this team Tyreek Sapp returns a name you're you're familiar with and your audience familiar with uh after his you know successful time at aquinus he returns after playing every game last year uh justice Boone a name that they're very high high on off the edge he was injured last year but a guy who could be a leader uh on that side and then I'll throw one more name for you coming off the edge TJ Cersei long uh you know has for your audience Jaylen Phillips prototype just this guy who looks a guy who can only be an edge guy but they're standing up more so I'm excited I'm excited princ Ley who who's Prince Ley I don't even need to try and pronounce his last name uh we're gonna see him again this year UF plays Old Miss so I'm sure they have that circle on their calendar but especially off the edge you're talking about a deep group talented group and they're going to rotate guys they're looking at two deep that they love TJ Cersei compared to Jaylen Phillips you know all America first round pick one of the best young pass rushes sounds like sound like me now I think I compared our 2026 quarterback commit to Bryce young yesterday so you're pulling from my baby I mean I'm definitely it's all seeping in here the kanes in sight it's uh seeping in before I get too far ahead I wanted to just slow it down and look big picture this was a team that was 114th in the nation and yards per play against which is basically like your efficiency um so you know tough tough year in that standpoint yeah scoring defense allowing 29.5 points a game for good for 85th we just spoke on the pass rush when you look at sack rate and again this is with or sorry sack percentage say basically the amount of dropbacks that result in a sack is with Prince Le Gator for 72nd so there a lot of room to improve you imagine you think the pass rush will be improved where else can this defense improve again for me I'm G to go all three levels with you I think that there's Improvement at all three levels and I don't think it's uh it's marginal either um I'll give you a top line again on that dline having those guys they bring in Joey slackman who's a transfer cam Jackson and Caleb Banks two returning guys at defensive tackle Desmond Watson everyone loves Desmond uh in college football he's back there uh LJ McCrae those five stars look different uh in those rooms and finally Florida's getting a few of them in there he's a guy who's a true freshman again the arrow is pointing up on that room so I love that the linebacker room there's finally some bite in the line Shamar James come back he's a clearcut leader he's the one who's going to be making all the calls out there but what I really love from UFA linebacker they kind of swapped out Scooby Williams goes to Texas A&M pup Howard comes in from South Carolina a guy that they're really high on Grayson pup power check him out uh he's going to be starting for UF at linebacker alongside Shamar James so I just love the makeup there they might have two of the best freshman linebackers in America miles Graham and Aaron Charles again two guys who are new to the team but again arrow pointing up on that group and then the DB room and safey is again young depth experience Jordan Castell returns a safety he played every safety snap as a freshman last year he comes back as a true sophomore ready to hold things down there and they brought some guys to really help him Outlast to help him out so I love what they're doing across all the positions you can tell me ask me any more about him the true FR you mention LJ McCrae you mentioned some two linebackers who's GNA play on on this defense as a true freshman that we should watch out for those guys are all gonna play I think that the way that UF plays and the way that Billy wants to get those guys it's a rotation they want those guys fresh I mean I think any dline and any dline coach wants that so you're going to see up to eight bodies rotating on the D line which means a lot of these guys are going to be fresh there's not going to be any dead legs and sagging uh what you saw out of UF a lot last year so I think that that gets remedied there um and that's really where it starts to me when I looked at the gator last year on defense the pass defense you're talking about this is pass efficiency yards per pass ATT however you want to call the stat to me is the most telling stat for for defense in terms of catch all when against the pass defense how many yards does the opponent throw for every time they pass that incorporates incompletions and also the the length of the completions Florida 8.5 yards per attempt allowed last year good for 124th in the nation yeah that's uncharacteristic for the Florida Gator that we've known for you know the past 24 years they've been pretty good at this area pretty consistently with the defensive backfield what went wrong for the Gators last year in the back end and how can they fix it what went wrong I wouldn't say what went wrong I think D if we're being honest it's a talent it's the chick right I think that they just didn't have the talent and experience back there it's been focus a key part of uh of Billy's rebuild with that secondary and what they've had going on there you know Jason Marshall he's a name that your audience is familiar with he's coming back as a senior they're counting on him to fun play as a freshman uh they want him you know he knows that this is a big year for him so you have him entrenched there but there was just a bunch of guys uh last year again Jordan Castell was a true freshman playing at safety you're sending this guy to to Death Valley he's playing against all these pre team like yeah that's going to happen um you know so that I think gets remed this year Ron Roberts is who Billy Napier tabbed to come in this year from Auburn to fix all this he comes in alongside Austin a Austin Armstrong so you have another mind another schemer on that defense in that defensive coaching room that is hopefully going to bring that experience um you know back to the Florida defense to get it back the way it was who's the best player on this defense best player on this defense uh healthy sh I think it's Shamar it's got to be Shamar James middle linebacker I think that he's the one who has the highest ceiling at that position um there's a lot of talent up front at the edge like I mentioned there but I think that that's where my uh first inclination is it goes to Shamar James the guy who's gonna have the comms in his helmet he's the one who's gonna be barking it out and he's the one that when he went down last year the wheels really fell off the wagon at that point you know you have the backup linebacker coming in it's not the same so defensive backs that could potentially make the NFL who are we looking at there I know you guys have seen a lot so you kind of know what that looks like I mean look there's there's plenty of lying to be told it's on this DB room I mean I love the guys that they've brought in here this is a position that they've really got some blue chippers and guys just the way that the chips have fallen um Devon Moore he's right now quarterback too he's a junior they he's a key I think to that secondary if he's healthy he's shown he could be one of as as good as anybody else out there he hasn't been healthy but they are expecting him to be out there at CB2 um for at for them some other names I'm going to tell you that I love jaem Jackson dejon Johnson we get Jrock jir Grimley um there at the end of signing day I mean these are all elite athletic guys um you know to be excited about at the quarterback position and who knows over the course of their development they have the skill set if they can keep their head on straight and and really get those reps at Florida I think that you could see Florida returning to DBU uh status sooner rather than later you mentioned talent and you're not overhauling the talent overnight no I wish was it uh was there physicality speed communication I what were the biggest problems facing the defense outside of just they need better players no it it's every single thing that you mentioned there were failures on that defense at every level uh last year whether that's you know just the way the season played out injuries motivation from guys who may be looking you know elsewhere the defense just like I mentioned it I said this word earlier it's sagged it sagged as the season went on and they just did have it you know so I think that this year you're coming in renewed new guys new energy young guys new Ron Roberts comes in again from Auburn to kind of retool things get these guys to get their bite back hit harder you know tackle um you know all these things that needed to be started from scratch they're doing those things so I give credit to Napier and I'm really excited to see it you know hopefully come together philosophically what should we see differently with the Gators on defense from last year to this year um philosophically I think that really it's just a rotation that you're going to see up front it's something that they wanted to do last year and again they just couldn't do it you're going to see a lot of fresh guys up front which should help to which should lead to a healthy Forman attack up front and that should helpfully lead everything last year you didn't see again you you brought up the numbers there wasn't a ton of pressure from UF this the linebackers who blitzing wouldn't get there there was none of that um so I think again with the way they've retooled things hopefully that this leads to that kind of changing so I'm I'm optimistic all the reports spring fall the scrimmages defense is is really is really shining so I'm excited to see what that looks like week one against Miami you know Miami when we switched to Manny Diaz from from coach afo there's a major shift in the front you know you're going from a three four a lot two gapping to just upfield those I mean night and day from day one so you're telling me philosophically it's not going to change that much it's really just going to be about having more good players having more good players putting them in better positions and having better communication and having again bringing in that Cod DC now they're gonna think is make that difference last year the defensive coordinator was Austin Armstrong Bright Young mind the players raved about him they loved him but he was also young it was his first year as a defensive coordinator so they go they bring in Ron Roberts uh from Auburn you know attacking defense a guy who's coached in every level every stop at the SEC that grayhair Deco that you want on your line on on your sideline so I think that that having that extra mind is going to change the way that they approach defense with Armstrong still leading the way so Miami comes into town yep cam Ward quarterback one of the better offensive lines in the country at least last year you bring in Damen Martinez pretty deep receiver room and you have some tight ends who you're excited about so kind of a new Miami offense that we don't know what to expect on our rank because he are new players but knowing what you know about those players in this matchup what area are you most uh optimistic about in terms of how you match up and that you're most concerned about yeah I think that the one thing I've seen Florida fans pointing to again again is you know Miami is installing a new system right all these are all new guys week one intangibles anything goes um but where I think UF has the best chance to succeed will be to have hopefully creating a little pressure up front with some of these guys that I mentioned off the edge I know that you guys have some good tackles but again they're really high on some of these guys coming into their own the Justice Boons TJ Cersei the Tyreek saps um seeing those guys I think that's going to be key and then they've got to you know they're going to have to make some plays on cam in some of those passes that he's throwing Jason Marshall as a senior in that he's played in that swamp against every team in every position I mean he's a guy who should be comfortable there he shouldn't be phased he should be able to lock down wherever you guys are throwing at him at wide receiver one so the hope is that if you can win a few battles maybe can Wards throw saes one a little little higher in the swamp than he wants to um and you have a guy like Jordan Castell a see a seasoned safety and someone makes a play there so I think that's where my where Florida could po win is at those areas in terms of the pass rushes you went through a big list of guys who's the best just from a pure pass rush standpoint you know oneon-one with a tackle generating pressure you know um they all bring different skill sets and I think it's hard for me to answer that question just because each one comes with its own warts uh Tyreek sap he's a little undersized for that position traditionally for what you want for a long end but he played in every game last year he is an impact guy he made plays you saw him Flash in games so you have him there Justice Boon was hurt last year but they Rave about him they can't stop talking about this guy as a leader off the edge who's gonna play coming off his ACL injury um and then the Cersei and mccrae's it's going to be hard to keep those guys off the field um I'm really excited to see again TJ Cersei coming off the edge and potentially making some plays so those are three names that kind of jump out to me um especially off the edge what type of Team gave youf the most problems last year on offense man I'm saying the which type of offense gave them the most problems LSU Jaden Daniels right just pure talent there pure talent there but I mean the guy was slicing in DiCon I mean he did that to a lot of teams but he he had no problem doing it to doing it to UF I mean again the UF defense struggled so much last year that it didn't matter if you were necessarily a pocket passer like Carson Beck you're a mobile guy you were getting yours um and I don't think that's going to be the case this year I think that you look at the schedule you look at the SEC every team is going to have to come uh and I like what UF is going to be throwing out this out there this year against some of those opponents on defense way more than they were last year tackling I'm assuming tackling was an issue when you have numbers like this how is that going to improve and where do you think it needs to improve the most as far as position or player yeah it needed to improve at linebacker first and foremost um last year I mentioned Shamar James goes down it's it's just not uh not not fun some of the things you were seeing there um in terms of tackling I think Billy mentioned that they had a scrimmage where they had 122 plays and there was maybe 20 Miss tackles in 122 plays um I don't know what that charts out to as long as it charts out to UFA you know making those tackles in games on week one but um you know they definitely need to improve there along with many other parts of that defense and I I think it's I think it's gonna happen turns to the new additions you mentioned Howard Turner as Turner right from the from Washington y y what are we looking as far as new additions on this defense not high schoolid but but transfers yeah I think that you know they looked at Jordan Castell and they said we need to surround this young guy with a bunch of guys who have experience and they went out and did exactly just that in the portal ASA Turner comes in from Washington uh you know I know you guys also plucked one from Washington in your secondary that I I was keeping an eye on uh but Ace has been everything that they've wanted to see from him out of practice an established guy started all three of Washington's postseason games last year in the secondary so a guy who's going to come up lay the lumber be a an experienced person for them um I think they're really excited to have him and then the other guy that they went and got is DJ Douglas from T Lane a little bit more of a free range guy a guy who sure tackler which they didn't have that other safety position so I think those are the two names especially in the secondary ASA Turner and DJ Douglas you're going to see those guys week one and they're expecting them to be impact guys is one of them gonna be a nickel or are they all three you have three sa starting kind of safeties or how's that play those are guys are more safeties in nickel you have more Sharie Denson and Aaron Gates playing more of a star position and that kind of chy Gardner Johnson Ro stepping up there but those guys have also had excellent camps so they like what they're seeing out of them at the star position I I had didn't even mentioned them when I mentioned the DBS earlier so Aaron Gates share Denson there's some Talent there but DJ Douglas I'm really really excited to see how he brings his Sure Fire tackling which you have sorely needed to the defense this year you think all three of those guys will play like a rotation or like how okay I think all three of those guys are going to play on the defense you know whether it's a dime package however they want to position it um you know and what the situation is I I think that all those guys it's going to be hard to keep them off the field just because of the experience that they bring and it being a week one setting I think that's the way Billy Napier wanted to put the secondary together it's had that Castell return he's a true sophomore played in every game last year flank him with two guys who just have played and been in those games and made those tackles so let's talk expectations we we wrap up one of the worst defenses in the country last year significant Improvement expected are we talking about like a worst to First a worst to the 70s the worst to the you know middle of the pack maybe 40s and 30s like what kind of improvement do you do you foresee for this team to the Moon baby to the moon no I mean look why not why why not these guys I think that you know that they have as big uh they have a bunch of big guys on that dline c Caleb Banks cam Jackson these are grown men I mean there's there's no shortage I think now of size and I think that they've had the influx of talent that they needed there's a youth movement going on in this defense that maybe it doesn't lead to a moonshot uh jump but you mentioned the 124th ranking there's nowhere to go from up here um and again I'm bullish I think the team is going to be really strong on defense which UF needs it needs if they want to be competitive with the schedule in week one against SEC it starts with this group here so again I think that they're gonna bring it hey Eric appreciate you get back to Santiago thank you for taking your time with us by the way Miami Hurricane team store if
