K-State Football Week 2 BREAKDOWN: Secondary Issues, Johnson’s Return to Form, and More!

what is up guys it is Joe we are back we're talking ball about the cats specifically today my week two thoughts following K States comeback win over to Lane 34 to 27 this one for the wild cats I've got a lot of thoughts about just about everything that happened today so I'm going to tell you all those here in today's video we make a postgame thoughts every week so it's cool whenever you guys get to jump in and see these videos and I'm glad I get to do this before I get to my thoughts let me remind you be sure and take a sec to consider subscribing to the channel as we continue to make more K State basketball K State football content everything under the sun that has to do with the power cat it's right here at the Joe tiller YouTube channel so be sure and hit that subscribe button I'm also getting a K State tattoo with 3,000 Subs so once we cross that I'm getting one on the left thigh so you don't want to miss that but let me jump in with my thoughts here now obviously it was easy to hit the panic button early I for one was cautiously optimistic I wanted to wait and see what happens um obviously that's that means nothing saying it now because Cas they did come back and win but it's a situation where there's a quick trigger in a lot of sports fans it's what makes things so volatile it's what makes fan bases so volatile there's a lot of people saying all right Avery Johnson's horrible Chris K's awful we'll never get through the non-count a lot of Doomer takes it is what it is I decided to wait and see what happens and thankfully we were rewarded with a win so I know it wasn't the prettiest picture early on there were good things and bad things I'm going to talk about in today's video I want to start off with one major bad thing that comes to mind the defensive presence was not great the secondary did not have a good day I should give them credit after giving up 20 points to to land in the first half they clamped down only gave up seven uh that being said Dari and Mena looked looked like an NFL quarterback out there dude was dotting up K State and it wasn't even just because oh this is a great throw this is a perfectly timed throw this is perfect pass there were just throwing Lanes everywhere I mean I don't know if anybody in the secondary really had a great day Jacob Parish probably the most uh positive on the stat sheet you had a tough day from Keenan Garber the safeties didn't do great as a whole you didn't see much out of uh Maris seagull you did see VJ pay come up with a big pick down the stretch but the one play that I still think about a little bit was one of the first couple touchdowns for tant I think it was their touchdown to make it 20 20 or vice versa whatever the case was they threw that fade ball to the tight end and Jordan riy perfectly in position there gets his head around sees the football come in doesn't make a play on the ball touchdown too late at worst that play's got to be a break broken up pass it just does so I wasn't really thrilled with the effort we saw there but it's also something where I'm going to express cautious optimism because Joe clander always figures it out he does it's not a situation where it's just hey they're bad they're going to be bad all year that's what's gonna happen it's not the case I trust the guys like Maris seagull like Jacob Parish I trust VJ Payne huge day for him in week two there's a lot of people that have earned my trust and faith that being said Joe clander is at the top of that mountain I trust him to make the right adjustments put the right guys in position and if you remember last season it started off similar where there was a lot of miscommunication there was a lot of bad stuff in the secondary early on and it got better throughout the year obviously there were still lapses here and there but the secondary didn't do great yesterday and that's a little concerning considering you have a guy coming off 300 yards and seven catches and four touchdowns in week one uh in Arizona I think that Arizona could very well pass for 800 yards but realistically knowing Joe clander they're going to get this figured out will it be immediate enough that we see a sizable impact in week three I would like to lean to the side of yes I think it'll be a better product but that being said today can't happen that's just the idea so huge credit to them for stepping up in the second half that cannot be overlooked after giving up 20 points to an offense like tulan who's just doing whatever they wanted getting seven points two turnovers I mean that's big time that's big time in the second half so shout out to the guys there once they did start to kind of figure it out I don't know if they started switching the schemes what the case is but Joe clander is incredible at halftime adjustments we've known this and he came through again yesterday so the first thing was there on the defensive side of the ball offensively there's a lot of good things uh the play calling is a concern for a lot of people and I don't want to just hammer it home be like oh Conor Riley didn't do great I'm maybe one of the few people at the moment that feels like this is going to drastically improve as the season goes on I feel like Conor riy is a capable play caller but there's a couple of grievances in there that I had to talk about the main one being Avery Johnson cooked I know it was slow early on missed the re with Sterling locket whatever people Miss throws that was a bad one to miss but people Miss throws Avery got it figured out down the stretch the man was cooked second half showed up showed what he was made of the dude he's an NFL quarterback that's what he was showing he was debuting that the idea though of hey this kid scored on three straight possessions and we have 17 on the board after the first you know stalling for so long let's take the ball out of his hands let's go run run screen pass I I get that we trust DJ I get that we trust Dylan Edwards I love those dudes I think they're incredible but you got to give Avery a chance on Third and 11 to cut it Loose once or even you know take a second run around survey the field consider where to go so there was a couple of those drives where I'm like man I want to give you credit for a good drive here I want to give you you know props and then it's the 180 of let's do this go back to elementary school type offense we'll figure this out I'm not here to crucify the man because I know it will get better um but I'm trusting Conor Riley I think he's a good enough guy I think he's going to figure it out as the time comes and similar to how Avery Johnson plays the game of football it's going to take some practice like it's going to be a situation where it's not just okay we're going to cut Avery loose he's going to go for 400 yards five touchdowns the people that keep saying this Narrative of like well they don't want Avery to run they're protecting Avery he can do what I don't buy this man the kid's GNA play how he wants to play he's going to do what he needs to do at the right time the narrative that it's like oh coach climbing and Coach uh coach Wells and Coach Riley are all holding Avery's hand saying don't run don't run the football you can't do this that's not real I'm just going to tell you that now the dude's ready to do whatever he wants and you saw that in the second half so I know a lot of people had the immediate reaction of oh no Avery can't throw we're awful whatever that wasn't me I'm sitting there saying you know what this is still the kid's third career start give him a chance see what happens when the offense opens up you use your legs a little bit you get some success in the running game you get some different things happening then he starts slinging the ball around you get the Deep ball to uh Keegan Johnson better day for Keegan Johnson while we're at it a couple of nice throws on the run the tight ends both had big days you get some of the good stuff here and there but I don't think it's a narrative of okay they're not letting Avery be Avery so that narrative I just I don't sign up for I don't think that's the case they're going to get this offense figured out I truly believe that and I think think every week is going to be a step in the right direction it doesn't just happen overnight though especially as a first year play caller so I'm going to express some you know concern but I'm also going to pump the brakes a little bit and not say okay this won't get better our offense is bad our defense will have to carry us whatever that's not the case Avery Johns is going to keep improving the same way this coaching staff's going to keep improving and I do trust Conor riy to get that thing done so yesterday not great for some of those you know some of those situational play calls but I can live with them here and there because there are some good play calls dialed up in there as well moving mostly on to specifics for players we got to talk about the running back room we're going to start by talking about DJ the dude is a beast I don't know what there what there is to say about DJ anymore he's a great football player he's an NFL football player how about the massive run he had cutting it off on the 143 the inside jump cut thing to split up and go for 60 yards down the field when K State needed it most DJ Gins is an NFL running back and we're going to see that here soon coming from a walk-on guy in Junction City to being one of the best runningbacks in the country DJ has solidified himself in that conversation and the best part is he just goes about his business he just does it the right way he's not you know triple back flipping or you know spiking the ball DJ just goes has fun plays football does the right thing that's what you love about this guy so huge props to DJ for just continuing to be that guy the other thing I want to talk about is Dylan Edwards the man has three touchdowns in two games at K State he's averaging like 10 yards a carry after two games he had four carries for 52 yards averaging you know whatever the math is there I'm not going to think about it 10 point something the first game he was averaging 9 and2 yards per carry this dude has got to be on the field more maybe it's a situation of we don't want to overwork him yet because he doesn't know the offense fully or we don't have specific sets for him but I think the best version of Kansas state was when you have both DJ gens both Dylan Edwards on the field at the same time because you give Avery Johnson those dudes in the backfield there's going to be throwing lanes open there's going to be running lanes open because there's not enough resources on the defensive side of the ball to stop all three of those guys there's just not you can allocate resources they're not getting run through up the middle by DJ giddens you can try to follow Dylan Edwards when he goes sideline to sideline on a end round or something like that you can try to stack the box and wait for Avery Johnson to beat you over the top all of this stuff cannot happen at all the same time you got to pick and choose so the best version of Kansas State in my mind has all three of those guys on the field I think we'll see that a little bit more as the season rolls on but that's one where I'm kind of like they might be shelfing that a little bit more that formation specifically but you're going to find Success With both those dudes on the field so something to consider there we need more Dylan Edwards long story short but it shouldn't come at the exposure at the expense of DJ gens it shouldn't be DJ's got to come out for Dylan to come in leave both those dudes on the field let them go to work because I truly think that's the way to roll defensively got to give some props to Austin r M shout out to the dude making the play of the game on the Strip sack got the football Jack fabis runs it back 75 yards you have to feel good about that kid's day because he wasn't necessarily the linebacker that everybody's saying this is going to be the best guy in the room this is going to be the starter this is going to be this is a dude that's young he's not necessarily unproven he's had some big moments but he had to learn a lot last year and a lot of those came with some bumps and bruises this season you saw the hype that people talked about last season of hey this Austin real man kid can be special for us early yesterday was a dominant performance from him in the linebacker room he had multiple sacks rushing the passer constantly in the backfield crushing the Run game screen game side to side Austin Roma feels like the next Cooper BB the next Duce vau and I when I say that hear me out first it's the kid that's under recruited in high school gets to the big level works his tail off doesn't talk too much doesn't do anything too crazy and goes out there and puts on a an All-American level performance week in and week out I'm not saying he's there right now I'm not trying to say that that he's an All-American linebacker right now but the kid has that upside that I think it's going to be two three years from now we're sitting there saying oh First Team all Big 12 Austin ran made a linebacker pencil it in write it in it's done the award's his that's the type of stuff we're looking at I think he's truly that next kid that's a three star from you know Kansas Missouri he's from I think he's Hillsboro Missouri if I'm not mistaken but uh you know you get a kid that's under recruited goes to Kansas State the storybook career happens he's the next one in line so that's my pick on that front I wanted to give a huge shout out to Austin real and I expect more from him as the season goes because he definitely had that juice yesterday a quick note I will add no turn turn overs which is great no picks no you know fumbles nothing crazy from Kansas State Side that's a reason you win these football games this was not a good football game for Kansas State football I do feel better watching the highlights back once I once I went back and watched it I felt a lot better obviously I know the outcome so maybe that's just a caveat but you feel better watching this stuff happen in real time because it's the situation of okay we've digested this here's a good play here's a good play here's a good play if they can strein these together the team's going to be great there was just too many isolated experiences of good play Bad play loss of yards sack whatever the case was not a sack I guess but good play Bad Bad play Etc there is so many of those in a row it's sporadically throughout the game if they can get those consistently which is where Conor riy improves which is where Matt Wells improves it's where Avery Johnson improves if you can consistently get that effort Kansas State's going to be lethal so something to consider there huge job taking care of the football uh both through the passing game and taking care of it uh ball security situation and the last thing I want to say before week three when you can learn a lesson in a win in a tight close win when you can learn a lesson there it is a thousand times better than getting the doors blown off you at some point it just is I know that some people like that makes sense winning is better than losing no one disagrees with that but the energy you see sometimes is man Kansas State We we played awful our offense needs to figure it out we're going to get destroyed by Arizona we're guys you want and you learned a valuable lesson you learn what your issues are where you need to allocate resources where you need to practice this is a storyboard type situation you put it up on the bulletin board you say Okay secondary wasn't great working on that you've got Arizona white outs that are going to go crazy on you if if you don't take care of this how do we get more guys shadowing McMillan side of the field uh Noah faid they had a lot of great success on offense defense wasn't great how do we as an offense start faster earlier on is it a Dylan Edwards DJ giddens backfield is it something where we get the you know quarterback run game get Avery rolling out of the pocket you learned a lot of lessons there without losing to Tain that's the biggest thing some people treat these games like oh it's the end of the world this sucks guys you won and I know it wasn't the perfect game we all expected it wasn't 54 to 10 or something crazy like that but it's a good lesson against a good football team Chris kman can use that Joe clander can use that Conor Riley can use that Etc everybody on this team learns something in a win so it's a big deal there so I wanted to kind of mention don't lose the fact that we did Come Away with a win the W is worth more than the L it always is and when you can learn from that to make your next game better that's what you want to do that's how you get better at football because there's a lot of things we do need to learn from that but overall I think there's a lot of good signs that people are kind of dropping and throwing out because you see more of the bad signs people are starting to kind of skip around that hey Avery had six or seven really really good throws in this game on the move he had a great sideline ball he had a crazy you know Pat mahom style running running left throw and right touchdown pass you miss those things DJ gens nobody's better than him in the country you miss these things Dylan Edwards runs a 4-2 and is incredibly good at football these things get thrown out when the game's over because you see the scoreboard you see the end result Kansas State found a way to win and learn a valuable lesson multiple lessons they can allocate going forward so something to consider and nothing to discredit there but those are pretty much my thoughts for the week two win over to Lane uh it wasn't the best game but it was a good game to watch I know it was sucky for about the first I mean I guess real time's different than in game time but the first three quarters pretty tough Kansas State got back into it I expect them to start a little bit faster against Arizona show up a little bit more on defense and we'll go from there but I do feel good about where this team is at after two weeks they're going to get the ship rided they're going to get it steered correctly and the biggest part is they're still two and0 so something to consider but guys that's going to do it for this video I appreciate each and every one of you for the support on the the first video thank you for coming back these videos are going to drop just about every day after these uh after these games finish up so so Saturday morning we'll have one coming up after the Friday gaming against Arizona but that's pretty much going to do it guys I appreciate each and every one of you for watching have a wonderful rest of your day I will talk to you soon go cats
