I'M TED WAYMAN WCVB NEWSCENTER FIVE. IT'S GOING TO BE CERTAINLY AN ADJUSTMENT, BUT I THINK IT'S TIME TO SPEND MORE TIME AT HOME WITH MY BRIDE OF 53 YEARS, JAN, AND MY THREE KIDS, THEIR SPOUSES, AND THE SIX GRANDKIDS, INCLUDING DUKE CASTIGLIONE. BREAKING NEWS FOR RED SOX FANS. THE VOICE OF THE TEAM, JOE CASTIGLIONE RETIRING AFTER FOUR DECADES OF CALLING GAMES. HE MADE THAT ANNOUNCEMENT DURING THE THIRIRD INNING OF TODAY'S BL GAME. DUKE, OF COURSE, IS BACK WITH US NOW. DUKE WHAT A LEGACY. YOU'VE HAD A GREAT FRONT ROW SEAT. I HAVE HAD A GREAT FRONT ROW SEAT. 42 YEARS. I'VE SEEN IT ALL WITH THEM. YOU KNOW, IT WENT BACK AND FORTH. THIS IS A TOUGH DECISION FOR HIM. HE'S BEEN WRESTLING WITH IT THE LAST COUPLE OF YEARS AND WRESTLED WITH IT ALL THROUGHOUT THIS SEASON. BUT HE MADE THE DECISION RECENTLY AND TODAY AFTER THE YANKEES BEAT THE RED SOX FIVE TWO, HE DECIDED THAT IT WAS TIME TO CALL IT QUITS AND HE WILL RETIRE AT THE END OF THE YEAR. HE WILL STAY ON AS AN AMBASSADOR WITH THE TEAM AND MAYBE DO SOME FILL IN GAMES NEXT YEAR AS WELL. BUT HE SAID HE WANTED TO GO OUT WHILE HE STILL HAS HIS FASTBALL. HE'S 77 YEARS OLD. HE'LL BE 78 NEXT YEAR. HE WAS THE FORD FRICK AWARD WINNER THIS PAST YEAR, MADE IT TO THE BASEBALL HALL OF FAME. HE'S A RED SOX HALL OF FAMER AND I CAUGHT UP WITH HIM JUST MINUTES AGO. CATCHPHRASE FIT SO WELL AND YOU LOOK AT THE AGE THAT'S PART OF IT. I THINK I'D STILL LIKE TO GO OUT WITH THAT WAY. I STILL HAVE MY FASTBALL, AND I MADE COOPERSTOWN THIS PAST YEAR. I THINK I'VE ACCOMPLISHED MY GOALS OVER THE YEARS AND HAD FOUR WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS TO COVER. SOME GREAT PLAYERS MADE SO MANY GREAT FRIENDS ALL GOOD THINGS DO COME TO AN END, BUT WE'LL STILL BE AROUND THE BALLCLUB. WORKING AS AN AMBASSADOR, MAYBE EVEN FILLING IN ON A BROADCAST. AND HE ACTUALLY SAW HIS FIRST GAME AT THE OLD YANKEE STADIUM. SO 71 YEARS LATER, HE ANNOUNCES HIS RETIREMENT IN THE BRONX AT YANKEE STADIUM. WHAT WERE THOSE CONVERSATIONS LIKE, I WONDER? YOU KNOW, I FOR THE MOST PART, I JUST I TOLD THEM AS A BROADCASTER, I STILL THINK YOU HAVE YOUR FASTBALL. I THINK IT WAS VERY HARD ON THE GRANDCHILDREN. ALL OF THEM. BUT, YOU KNOW, HE'S AT PEACE WITH IT, SO HE'S AT PEACE WITH IT. I DIDN'T TRY TO TALK HIM OUT OF IT TOO HARD. YEAH, THERE WERE PEOPLE WERE IN MY EAR TO TRY TO TALK HIM OUT OF IT. BUT, YOU KNOW, HE'S HAD A GREAT CAREER. HE JUST WANTS TO CHILL OUT AND SPEND SOME TIME WITH MY MOM. HE DESERVES IT. ABSOLUTELY. MY MOM DESERVES IT TOO. YOU KNOW, BEING THE WHOLE FAMILY. YEAH. BEING THE THE WIFE OF A BASEBALL BROADCASTER IS NOT EASY. HE'S GONE ALL THE TIME. AND COMING HOME AT FIVE IN THE MORNING. SO SHE DESERVES TO. YEAH. GO
