Gen Z, Your Grad Year Is Why You're Unemployed According To TikTok

Intro what up y'all my interweb friends my friends on the interwebs my friends all across the globe connected that is US unified right we have a community now we're trying to build a community right the W jalops it used to be the WJ jaian it used to be the wjo what is it wjo lanterns that was one of them maybe we should actually stick with W jao lanterns for a Halloween theme right now though I like will Jackal Ops reminds me of like the Cyclops like the oneeyed creatures cuz that like apparently those one eyes were like you know um able to see in one movie apparently they were able to see the future so that one eye even though they had only had one ocular cavity as opposed to the two that we have they had wisdom wisdom Beyond wisdom because they We Are The W Jackalopes could see things in the future so that's what we are We Are The W jackalopes okay so no more W jackings no more W Jack what is it w Jack Ops Well Jack house can stick around those are the guys who and the people who are a little bit hypercritical of me delivering and sharing information and my personal experience right tonight's video is not personal experience but information tied into the video from a couple videos ago I want to talk about why you shouldn't put your graduation year on your resume when applying for a new job that's actually the title of the article again these incredibly well-written titles right very catchy now this is a Business Insider article it is not a long read so I will try and keep the video brief but whenever I say that they seem to go long so I'm not going to say it I'm going to say I'm going to try to keep it brief so career focused Tik tokers are sharing job hunting advice one lesser known tip is Job Hunting Advice to exclude your graduation Year from your resume this may help recent graduates find higher level positions and help other candidates prevent agism sorry I said other it says older my bad now as an older candidate myself I can tell you agism very prevalent and my own personal attachment to this story is that I actually have followed some of the advice that I'm about to read you before reading this article I'm not a Tik Tok user I had no idea that this was all over Tik Tok and it's been there for a little bit these are just things that to me seem like Common Sense I'd been out of school for a little bit I decided you know what after two years of being out of school it's probably a good idea to remove the date from the resume why because it's going to make my degree look stale people were like no no no no no no no no no no well that's exactly what this article says that multiple influencers are saying now do we believe Do We Believe Influencers influencers especially on the Tik Tok brain rot platform I don't know but I mean it's something that I was already doing myself maybe that doesn't say a lot about me but in my mind anything after 2 or 3 years seems pretty stale so I kept it for from 2 years and lower for anything for me that had a date if I even worked somewhere longer than a few amount like you know maybe let's say a handful of years like a small amount of years like a decade or something like that was not good anything like 5 years or past had to come off the resume why because they're going to say well if this guy has been working here for 10 years or 15 years or he worked here for 5 years and here for 10 years and here for 5 years and they weren't overlapping years they can figure out how old you are it it just takes a little bit of math it's not hard to put together how old a candidate is whether that's going to be a problem cuz they're too old or maybe too young you know either it's going to be geriatric or inexperienced How Old Are They but they're going to have a problem with you somehow so try and reduce the ways they can have a problem with you that's the idea when it comes to the job hunt it's not like I don't know this my videos are here to explain to you like what I'm doing it's still struggling and what I've done is still struggled so let's carry on with the article here if you're job hunting one small detail in the education section on your resume may be holding you back that's the year the Year you graduated while some take TI talkers are teaching jenz how to adapt to the corporate world others are giving advice on how to get a job in the first place one piece of advice that's gain traction on the platform is that you should delete the year you graduated from your resume the School of Hard Knocks Tik Tok account which shares financial literacy tips and career advice posted an interview with a woman who said she works in sales at Tik Tok currently Works in sales at Tik Tok and her asking her advice oh sorry asking her what advice she would tell her younger self delete your graduation Year from your resume she said the Delete Your Grad Year reason being that a lot of the time traditional hirers or recruiters are going to base your salary off of how long you've been in the real world okay so if in recent grads leave their graduation off the resume recruiters will have to judge them on their skills and previous experience and that could mean they end up getting considered for more than just the entry level rules typically set aside for candidates just entering the job market so you might not get the entry position that they put you in because you just came out of school you could actually get something better if they were looking at your thing and saying who look at this impressive set of skills and whatever you know knowledge that they have other career focused creators quickly jumped in to add to the conversation stitching the original video with her own advice Jerry Lee another creator of career counseling company Long salting agreed and said he recommends candidates not only delete their graduation year but also move their education section to the bottom of the resume below their work Other Creators Take experience adding your graduation year can only hurt you Lee said unless you're a student then that's okay I I think I've seen some of that guy's videos on this platform actually and some of his posts um I don't agree with all of them I don't I don't think he's necessarily wrong with some of the stuff but a lot of them don't ring true to me another Creator at Rob canila offers a slightly more cautious take and he's an older guy closer to my age I'd say and his take is very similar to the one that I came up with myself last year He suggests that if you've graduated within the last 2 years you should definitely keep your grad date what did I say two years that's a good number after two years probably stale leaving off might suggest a to potential employers that you didn't graduate at all so for a while I actually had that I had a degree that wasn't quite completed I was like 90 literally 90% of the way there but I didn't finish and as a result um I would put that on there and I think they did think it was an Removing Your Grad Year incomplete it didn't hurt it didn't help me I think it hurt me it it like definitely hurt me and if you've graduated within the past 5 years Killa says you might want to keep it in places like LinkedIn so that you'll come up in the results when recruiters are looking for candidates with a certain number of years of experience once you've graduated more than 5 years ago Kela suggest thinking about removing your grad year five years I'm at the 5-year Mark now I actually removed all my numbers like a long time ago just cuz I know that numbers it's not hard to track man oh I graduated high school in this year it's not hard to figure out how old you are right exactly the advice isn't just for recent graduates either removing your graduation year can be good uh for older job Seekers too an trell Vining who's been behind the career tips and comedy account at Tech by an trell said that by doing so can help prevent agis assumptions that recruiters could make about older applicants besides your graduation date Removing Other Details there are other details you might want to consider removing from your resume too like certain personal details mailing address career objectives and hobbies so basically everything that I was taught even up to a few years ago is obsolete now oh man must be wj's fault for doing everything wrong even though things change overnight every single two seconds Rachel nberg a recruiter who specializes in diverse hiring ah everyone's favorite diverse hiring and post tipss on LinkedIn told bi Business Insider that you should also consider removing introductory paragraphs at list the number of years of experience you have in a field so what is your resume supposed to be anymore like I'm not really understanding what your resume is supposed to be for example if you're an older candidate you might want to exclude a line that says you have 15 or 20 years of experience in a certain industry I have this like these are things that I have in my cover letters but apparently it's bad to have experience now it's not good to be brand new but it's not good to have experience it doesn't make any sense you know move around from company to company but don't move around from company to company like it doesn't make any sense everything is so contradictory sometimes that could lead employers to consider a candidate too senior or too expensive maybe that's why I can't get a job maybe that's why I don't even get into the interview room except I don't put years on my resume not really sure how they're figuring it out but there's got to be some maybe it's just the amount of work I've done or something but I definitely think that like any kind of indication of how old you are how much experience you have where you've been etc etc etc is not going to work in your favor it is going to cook your chances of getting that job okay toast all right guys hit like hit subscribe pass the videos along let me know what you think about this is this information nonsense or does it kind of like ring true with you I will tell you again as much as I'm not like a user of Outro Tik Tok I don't know anything about really that platform like at all but I do know that I was already doing some of the things that these influence influencers were saying and now I might even start falling under that term of you know I could somebody could say that I'm an influencer but I'm not I hate that term I'm just a guy on YouTube who's talking and sharing ideas and we're trying to create conversation and create a community together these influencers are they right I don't know you tell me I personally think that some of them are probably on to something wild does that may be because I would never ever typically be like oh influencers know what they're talking about but I think some of these people do like subscribe check out the links peace out
