[Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] 10 line drive base hit to right field the Phils will win the game Cody Clemens can R he wins it two to one here in the bottom of the ninth inning Whatever Gets You Through the night and tonight it's Cody Clemens Bases Loaded bottom of the ninth Phillies and Tampa Bay tied at one a piece and Clemens as Tom McCarthy said rakes one to right field and he can rake and he has found himself in similar positions throughout this season and he has produced batting average might not indicate it but moment to moment that's what he does and how about Buddy Kennedy from milville New Jersey Ricky balico Ben Davis I'm Michael Baran we welcome you the Phillies postgame live presented by Cure auto insurance 21 Phillies and man oh man of chevit did they need that win didn't they Ricky B yeah they they needed that win uh in a big way I mean you're you're in a situation where you have to win these games this is the Tampa Bay Rays they're it's it's not like they're they're the 27 Yankees you got to go out there just play your game and it almost seemed that I mean Christopher Sanchez was outstanding in this game pitched very well in this game and the Bullpen was kind of cruising through and then boom all of a sudden stez gives up that home run you're like wow what what is going on here it's almost like a migraine headache yeah it was it was but it ends up okay did EST stez give it up or did roas give it up I think we can talk about it we can talk about that but it's a great win nonetheless and I agree Christopher Sanchez was outstanding 94 pitches through six Innings he had 16 swings and misses the change up was on point today sure was let's go across the street right now and check in with one John Kook called tonight's game with Tom McCarthy the wall of Famer himself John we're at a point in the season where you don't care how how you get the winds as long as you get the winds right and and in that way this was a thing of beauty after what befell them earlier in the inning wasn't it uh yes and uh you know look Roos made a hell of an effort to get to that ball he just couldn't hold on to it once his arm uh you know his glove yeah hit the wall glove the arm of his glove hand hit the wall and uh and po that thing out but you know give the Phillies credit they come right back and uh thank goodness we didn't have to go into extras yeah than thank goodness right I I mean the bullpen was pretty good up until the stez uh I I thought Kirk ring looked really good and Hoffman's been on top of his game for a long period of time I think this pitching staff as a whole has really kind of held down the fort for the last uh I would say week and a half half or so what what have you noticed about that Bullpen uh it's just Dynamic you know Orion kiring has been just absolutely fantastic uh you know with his and he's been a Workhorse too for as a bullpen guy but you know his velocity and and that sweeper uh combo is just just lethal and and then Jeff Hopman comes in with his three pitch mix and uh you know you wonder why he was an All-Star well you don't have to wonder no more he's carried that on to the second half the season also and uh you know look as steis has been good it's just you know what one swing and uh you know ties the game up but you know I give him a lot of credit as deas for staying in that game after taking that line drive off the knee that that thing had to hurt looked like his command was a little uh shaky after that but uh he came right back in that same hitter and uh and got the big out to get out of that thing and uh give the Phillies a chance there in the bottom of the ninth John I got to ask cuz it was glaring and we saw it happen now twice in Harper at bats in the last couple games ball off the wall and he is standing at home play what I mean what were your thoughts when that first happened uh my arms went up in the air and I thought what what's going on here uh you know it's it's inexcusable uh you know I I I I know Rob Thompson was talking to him after the game was over and The Dugout about it so uh hopefully that all gets resolved but it it just just you can't have that anymore not this time of year not any time spring training you shouldn't do it but uh either but you know at this time of year man you got to take what they're giving you you can't assume anything Johnny Christopher Sanchez tonight six Innings 94 pitches this guy had 16 swings and misses as I mentioned when we first came on the change up fastball combo was was pretty much unhitable tonight wasn't it yeah he's he's just amazing and you know everyone thought you know what are we going to do with Christopher Sanchez you know he's he's you know over that Innings limit or Innings thing you know that we didn't want him to go this far but how do you take him out his velocity is still good he has great movement on that change up and the differential from you know 95 96 to the change up that he throws you know 86 87 uh what else do you need you know he he's he threw a few Sliders in there just to let him see it I guess but you know he's the kind of guy that can get through if he has a change up working he can be a two-pitch pitcher and and be successful as you've seen John we're moment to moment as fans and observers of the game as a player after you lose two straight by a combined 19-6 and then you eat one out 2 to one but you're back on the winning path how uplifting is that in the clubhouse well it's huge um you know and again they understand that they only have a handful of home games left and they play great at home and uh you know if they came back here after after losing the last two in Miami and they come here and uh you know listen against a a team that's offensively challenged like the Tampa Bay Rays and if you lost this game today and you lose three in a row and your first game back on a s-day home stand um you know that could be a little bit demoralizing but you know give this team credit you know they gave up the lead in the ninth but they fought back and took the took the game in the bottom of the ninth so hopefully this can catapult them into uh uh you know finishing off this this this next six games this home stand really strong and uh you know hit the road and where do they go Milwaukee and New York and uh two tough teams man and so they they got to take care of business this home stand and then you know look play play 500 on the road win this road this hom stand and things should be pretty good and Mets beating Toronto right now at the end of the e 3 to2 so potentially really important tonight all right John thanks so much we'll talk to you tomorrow my friend John joining us from the booth he should have gone all the way to the wall of go to the wall your first shot is to go all the way back to the wall turn around and find the ball I mean that's what most at least when I played all the outfielders used to do that get back to the wall turn and then and then know where you are I he didn't know where he was I mean and the problem is on top of it even if he knows how many steps it is from the track to the wall where he is he's in a weird spot because he's coming in kind of sideways to the wall which means that those steps aren't going to be true so you could start that's why I think he started drifting because if he knew the true steps like if he came in and it was straight back to the wall and guys will go out there and count one two three steps all right I'd be at the wall this one you're coming in kind of sideways so you already hit the the uh the uh warning track and you're going forever on the warning track there is no stopping at that point your stopping point is the wall yeah I don't think he knew that ball was going to carry that far cuz when he looked at it it looked like L just got jammed but the ball just went up and got in that jet stream and out it went so and that's why he started to drift even more like Ricky said and instead of getting back there just catching it again that ball is not going to go out of the ballpark he almost turned the ball and threw like I know he didn't throw it out of the ballpark but he almost kind of turned it and it just right out of the it was that and also the momentum of his glove going onto the fence rail and then smacking down the M that momentum carried the ball over oh all right let's we're only going to talk about this for another half hour and then that's it that was the most that was the most excitement in the game you're well no caused the excitement well I'll tell you what there was there was another piece of excitement as well which was Bryce Harper failing to run out what he thought was going to be a home run and it would have been should have been a double this is after that and he's talking to Rob Thompson after the game number one there's no excuse for Bryce Harper in that situation there's nothing he he can even say to Rob Thompson what are you supped say I thought it was a home run that's not a good answer well I hit it hard that's that's not a good answer either it's a double this is a double you just did you know what right now he the thing that that surprises me on that ball that ball was hit on a line so you would have thought that he in his head would be man that's a line drive I got to go if not two if if it kicks off cuz let's face it we've seen it kick off of those walls and Go funny directions that ball could have kicked off to the corner he could have been on third mhm there there's a lot of things that going on there's no excuse us I I mean thank goodness we didn't get filmed tonight oh my if you had seen us watching that play thank goodness they won this game tonight the other thing is that that ball only went halfway up the right field wall if you're going to if you're going to watch a ball like that it's got to be in the second deck make it be like at least like a like a schwar Barian bomb does it indicate his power or lack thereof that he thought it's a line drive I know but he thought had a shot to go out and upon further inspection it did not we've heard the the term La launch angle that wasn't a that wasn't an optimal La launch angle almost look like it had Top Spin on it yeah Top Spin those balls don't go out you get ones the Back Spin to carry on out of the his swing though when the ball left the picture the swing looked like it was going out I thought it was gone and then you see no was a be line I didn't I thought it looked exactly like last night exactly like down in Miami the line drive to to to right center field he's not getting like launch on it at all all right let's see what Rob Thompson has to say about this win about Bryce Harper and about Yan roas here's Rob Thompson rob you talked about how the guys that come up here always seem to be ready to go called upon preparation to go through and you see another example again tonight with a guy CL make a b like this about those guys being able to be able to do this they've done this like this year and before about being that kind of that that ready mind frame well I think a lot a lot of it has to do with um and in in Buddy's uh for buddy this didn't this wasn't him but guys that are AR in our spring training they get to know the guys they get comfortable with them we've got a great Clubhouse um so I think they come up here and they're a little bit relaxed and then you have to give credit to our Player Development Department for having these guys ready and you know buddy he's only had a couple of bats but they've been all really good and especially the one tonight so you know and Clemens has swung about pretty well for us the whole time um so I I think it's combination you know I think it's um our our main guys in that Clubhouse make other people feel welcome and let them relax and be themselves and and our Player Development Department does a great job what was that like from your spot in The Dugout when you hear fans awesome for Cody and buddy yeah isn't that great I mean just shows a passion once again considering your own professional situation do you tend to identify with those guys maybe a little more you know they're getting their their shots yeah I think so you know I think um I wasn't good enough to even get a shot but um yeah I I pull for those guys especially should har yeah yeah and before I could get to him he came up to me and apologized does that kind of set a tone too I mean we talk about you know having a sheriff in the clubhous to yell at somebody if they don't do it but when the guy making the most money in the history of the club you know make sure that he knows that you know and everybody knows that you know yeah does kind set a tone too I think it does you know I think it it shows the other guys that they need to to hustle and and um you know he he's accountable and he admits to his mistakes and that's all you can ask for really do you think Roos had that I did that would have been an unbelievable catch um but he just you know the his wrist hit the top of the fence and the ball just popped out of his glove he did nothing wrong it would have been you know highlight reel type stuff how was the steas after that line or two was it his shin or knee it's his knee uh it's just a contusion uh they're checking him out they'll they'll work on him tonight and see how he is tomorrow I'm sure he'll be a little bit sore tomorrow at this stage of at this stage of the Season how crucial is a game with this one for you uh well you know they're all big but it's it's good to get the momentum back after yesterday because yesterday was was disappointing and um uh to come home here and have the fan base behind us and win this ball game you know has the potential to to get us back going again so um I think it was really huge win how important was Sanchez in that role I mean if he isn't what he is you guys I don't think he till the six or something like that yeah he was fantastic I mean he over 70% strikes 96 97 even at the end uh the change up was really good I thought it was a little bit um he was cutting the change up a little bit early but then he found it and started get the fade and and the bottom to it and he was Landing a slider he had everything going um great Poise uh filled the strike zone up he was really really good how impressive is it for a guy to do that when there's such a little margin for error in a game you knows aren't falling scor Z yeah I think that's uh the competitor in the in the guy on the mound because you know we don't have any hits until what the six or whatever it was at sh we at the Home Run and to keep putting up zeros and keep putting up zeros and keep you know and maintaining your Poise that's that's huge and it's it's all growth with sanche I mean I'm not sure if you'd see that two years ago but now he's he's a grown man and he's matured and and um he's showing great Poise a couple rightand bats on the bench comes up Lefty on Lefty what have you over these two years like what has stuck out to you about him as as a player as a hitter as a guy in big moments well the two right-hand hitters on the bench were real M and Garcia so um uh yeah he he hangs in on lefties he does he can hit and he's not afraid of anything he's not afraid of the moment um he just he he's a big League hitter it's just he he wasn't with us all year just because of how our roster was set up so um he can hit speaking of moments I mean Kyle forber just seems to have big moment after big moment and you know again without him we're not we're not talking this right now proba yeah I'm he's had a heck of a year and he's you know going into the year he wanted to cut down on a strikeouts um so he's had better at bats he's using the entire field he's hitting more balls to center field uh getting on base he's just been he's had a great year thank you thank you Rob Thompson on tonight's two to1 Phillies win over the Tampa Bay Rays he also talked about Bryce Harper he said he came came up to me post game and he apologized to me before I could get to him it came the ink came off the ball and went onto my pants that's how hard it was hit it was smoked you that that hurts like hell you know how hard that hit Estes and for him to stay in the game I mean this guy's a mountain of a man did you see where that ball landed after it hit his kneecap it almost landed on the chalk line so you're talking about it goes out 60 feet and then it goes all the way over to the chalk line are you kidding me in the air that's how hard this ball hit him he stayed in the game nothing you couldn't have taken off your KNE he did trap he in fact he still has the official ball in the National League it's on his th for goodness sakes and when we come back Rick's going to show everybody the B all right we'll take a break we come back please won all right yeah I'll show you see you in a second he has 34 home runs now I remember we were talking about his 28th home run bam he just hits six more home is my math right six more home runs look at this most homers first three seasons with any MLB FR franchise you're talking about Babe Ruth on that list Roger Maris on that list cesil Fielder Jimmy Fox on that list and then Maguire NE um in all in all honesty I mean you're talking about a guy who now has 34 home runs he's six away from that 40 slot again he's got 94 the eyes I got to believe he's going to get there I I'm hoping he gets there he deserves it and and when you you have Bryce Harper struggling with the power to have him come to the rescue he's small thing by the way who's who has the superhero been on this team in the last three weeks who's the superhero well we were saying casos but I now sh casos was that that glue that kind of held everybody together when the rest of the team went who knows where they went on vacation somewhere but he yes casano has held this team together for a long period of time but I mean you talk about power and RBIs and run production who's the one guy on this team that's been the most consistent in the last three years other than Kyle sber this team's really not hitting a whole lot of home runs no they're not hasn't gone deep in a while was today was game 25 or 26 for Harper not going deep ciano's been quiet in the power Department he's getting hits Marsh has hit a couple but I mean other than that it's it's really just been the kle Scher show with regards to home runs all right so let's set up the bottom of the ninth because Turner lined out to right field Harper you saw the single that should have been a double Alec bomes on the Shelf with his bad hand so Clem is going to get a lot of reps and right now he is rewarding Rob Thompson with a lot of good productivity am I stretching it to say that he deserves a full-time spot he probably does he probably does I mean this guy has done has had some really big hits for the Phillies but is the first time when he came up this time this time when he came up was the first time you see that confidence every time he steps up to the plate you could see it and I think I said it the other night I think you were with me when I said it and I was like there's something different about about him he gets up to the plate he looks like he belongs think about the bats he had in Toronto he comes up to pinch hit has a nine pitch at bat hits a little scribber down in third Baseline gets an RBI but then they end up coming back around and getting another knock in that ball game a big double in that ninth inning before scharber goes up top with a three-run homer he's putting together really good at bats and it's not just against righties obviously a walk-off there of cleer with the with the Lefty who's throwing high high 90s that's not easy no not he stays in there I was thinking they look like playoff type at bats you know what playf playoffs here's Cody Clemens in the clubhouse like uh the Buddy chance and then the Cody chance it was awesome uh being on Deck here and Buddy's name was pretty surreal I was getting chills for him it was awesome and for them to just roll it over to me obviously was super cool as well Cody you got you've been here time you've been up here you've come through a number of times and stayed ready um the mindset that goes through to go through to be able to do this time and again just how efficient have you been staying ready and being ready and coming through when you have to yeah just trusting the process and the preparation that I that I do um you know you get limited opportunities and you got to take advantage uh when you get them and um just having the mindset of you know I'm good enough to be here and I can contribute um has kind of pulled me pulled me through in that situation especially and given how important these games are going to be down the stretch just how big a moment was this I guess for you you considered they they came back and tied it and you come away and get a win yeah it was huge uh we grinded the whole game and um for us to obviously Kyle hit that Homer kind of got us going and um you know right there at the end we battled and had a good good inning to get me up and um it was a big win for us
