Marshall Football: Charles Huff Post Game Press Conference (Virginia Tech)

[Music] [Music] all right we'll open with a statement from coach then we'll go a question yeah uh hat off to Virginia Tech that's a good football team over there they played well um really proud of the way our guys fought uh really proud of the way our guys battle really proud of the way we stuck together this didn't make enough plays to beat a really good football team uh too many missed opportunities in the beginning of the game uh that could have changed the outcome um got to get better got to get better we had opportunities we got we got to make the catches we got to get the guys on the ground um can't turn the ball over um special teams was back and forth too many penalties um but really proud of the way they fought um so there's some positive to build off of um again hats off the Virginia Tech they did a really good job of um making the play when he needed to question when you start off defensively like that obviously that that said it tone earlyer you guys limited a lot of what they did offensively was it just a matter of tired legs at the end of it no I mean when you when you play a good team you you you stop them on defense you got to move the ball on offense and if you don't I mean at some point they're going to make a play that's a good football team um I thought we missed some opportunities in the beginning of the game um offensively to swing it um that could have changed the way they had to play in the second half uh we left them in position to be able to stick to their game plan we didn't put any pressure on them on the other side and they made play so um defense did some really good things um missed some tackles later in the game that kind of you know put us in a situation where they were getting some extra yards um but again hats off to them I mean a missed tackle is part Us Part them you know they ran through some tackles the drones kids a really big physical Runner we missed him a couple times the running back did some really good things um so we missed opportunities to to counteract the defense you know putting up a stop we didn't turn around and get anything on the offensive side you you guys came right back as a three-point game there in the third quarter they have that one big pass play that that seemed like that turned some momentum did you did you kind of feel it like that big play changed changed a little bit for them uh no I mean it was a big play for them we wanted to minimize the big plays I thought we did a really good job early in the game you know a couple times he was looking downfield and we were covering guys um and the kid made a big made a play um our DB's a step in a half behind him he laid out made a great throw great catch um that's going to happen in these games we talked about that um the the the other side of it is we didn't make any of so you don't get the balance you know so um I didn't think that one play made the difference obviously that one play kind of put them in a different field position um situation where now they were able to do some things Run game wise um but you know we talked about explosive plays I thought we did a good job of minimizing those um you know and then at one at the end and end up catching up to us um you know after two weeks now you have a week off does that give you an extra chance to evaluate some of those things offensively that aren't quite clicking yet well I mean I think you got to look at the other team I mean they're good um the drops we can clean those up but I mean a couple times we got guys blocked on the burm they get off the block and made plays um so we've got to figure out some ways obviously against the tougher opponents you know the the bigger physical opponents um to be able to do some things um to give us a chance you know it's magnified when you have the drops because the guys are open um it's magnified when you're trying to protect against a really good KN line you don't have a lot of time we're trying to get the ball out of his hand quickly um so I think it's a little bit you you got to give him credit it's good football team um not saying that minimizing the things that we didn't do well um but you can't make those kinds of mistakes against good team they um some some good things you obviously did happen today what what are some general takeaways um saw some fights saw some big plays Mir had a good block on special teams kind of give me some positive take yeah I I think we battled you know I think we battled I thought we did a decent job of keeping the quarterback up you know we we knew they're they got two really good pass rushers uh we knew we were going to have to get the ball out of their hands quickly um I thought at time we were able to run the ball you know consistently um you know I thought at times we were able to separate in you know in the coverage you know they played a lot of man coverage um they were long you know I mean physical guys so I thought at times we separated um just the consistency of execution wasn't there um and when you're in these type of games you got to be consistent in the execution because you got to try to get off the field on defense on third down you got to St on the field on offense on third down first half that kind of caught up to us a little bit um which magnifies some of the opportunities that you have to punt you punt nine 10 times to a good return it's going to catch up to you you know um kid made a great play um we missed some tackles you know in the coverage game so some of the things that you know showed up this week didn't show up last week so we got to continue to work um you know it's just going to be a while before we understand who this team really is I think we've had um the Spectrum last week we were probably the more dominant team so we probably got away with some things just because of um being you know more physically dominant this week we were probably even in some spots unmatched in others um so we can learn from it you the guys got their heads up um we take ownership of it we we miss some opportunities um we had a chance to make some plays that probably could have swung the momentum swung the way they had to play us uh we should make them today coach you decided to go with stone the whole game did you think brilin or what was your thought process yeah no what we were what we were planning to do was was was in Stone's wheelhouse you know um there's a couple times there he makes some really good throws we drop him there a couple times there throws are a little bit off you know obviously it gets magnified when you're the quarterback um but you know when you came back to the sideline you know I mean beautiful ball a couple times to some really good receivers and those guys have made plays before they didn't make them today um so no we we we what we were planning to do uh we we were going with stone based on what we were planning to do um I haven't seen the film but obviously it gets magnified right you throw an incomplete pass and they drop it's still an incomplete pass um I thought he played hard I thought he gave us a chance you know he ran hard um I thought he got the ball out of his hand quickly which which was a big piece for what we were trying to do uh we just got to make some more plays having a guy like a back to back games really big run so does that do for your guys' offense yeah I think it gives us some balance you know um it gives us some balance in the Run game I think we're running the ball better because of the threat of the pass you know they were playing man coverage today um so we had a few more runs once everybody turns their back and the guy gets through the line it's a little bit more space last week they played kind of drop everybody out of there so it creates some runs um it gives us the balance because teams have to decide how they're going to play the pass what we've got to be able to do is complement the Run game with the consistency in the pass game um and I think that's that's part of part of what we're trying to do part of what we're getting to um still got work to do but good opportunity for us to run last question the PS Patrick H the one arm thing you see yeah I mean he's he's a big physical receiver he gives an advantage you know there's a couple more in there where you know he slips and doesn't doesn't get you know to the spot balls in the air you know opportunities um I thought he battled um he'd probably like to have four or five plays back um you know there was a couple times where we wanted to get him the ball and they took him away a little bit but that that's what we that's what we had today we had the the spectacular play and then we had the play where you know we we we had a drop you know we had a big run then we had a play where we got a guy you know in the backfield so just inconsistent and when you play good teams you can't do that we got to string together some more consisten see um in all three phases right we had a block punt everyone's excited then we kick the ball off out of bounds you know early in the game we have an opportunity to make a field goal which probably changes the dynamic a little bit we missed it you know but then we turn around and we hit a you know a huge opportunity on uh you know kickoff you know get kicking the ball out of the out of out of the end zone giving us field position so um way too much inconsistency to be a really good football team great opportunity to learn still proud of the way the guys fought I thought they played hard all the way to the end uh we were in the game because of how hard they played um but we we got to make more plays we got make more plays thank you coach
