frankenheimer leading to a strained working relationship on set frankenheimer later commented declaring that he doesn't like Val Kilmer he doesn't like his work ethic and he doesn't want to be Entertainment Weekly titled Val Kilmer makes enemies in Hollywood shed light on the challenges some directors and co-stars faced when collaborating with him it's important to note that Val's intensity and dedication to his craft came from a place of passion and a desire to deliver his best work and while all accounts point to Kilmer acting obnoxiously his behavior may be explained by the incredible stress he was suffering at the time for one thing Kilmer had recently fallen out with his older brother Mark Kilmer following their father's death in 1993 they were allegedly fighting over Eugene Kilmer's will and properties everything was going wrong for Val and it came through in his behavior the island of Dr moroe was considered both a critical and financial catastrophe and it may have 1996 when he went through a highly publicized divorce from his then wife actress Joanne WALL-E the couple who had met on the set of a fantasy film Willow in 1988 had been married for 8 years and shared two children Mercedes and Jack Kilmer the divorce proceedings were tumultuous with rumors swirling about Val's alleged infidelity with supermodel Cindy Crawford the aftermath of the divorce took a toll on Val both emotionally and financially he found himself navigating the complexities of co-parenting while also dealing with the public scrutiny from such a publicized divorce which comes with being a high-profile celebrity in the Years following the divorce Val's love life continued to make headlines as he was linked to various actresses and models in including Daryl Hannah however it was his relationship with Daryl Hannah that proved to be particularly painful for Val in his Memoir he candidly wrote that the Lord knows he has suffered heartache but Daryl was by far the most painful of all the end of their relationship left Val feeling devastated in grappling with the emotional Fallout alongside his personal struggles Val also faced challenges with his physical appearance known for his chisel good looks and fit physique Val began to gain weight in the mid 2000s the media was quick to pounce on his changed appearance with tabloid headlines like Val Kilmer goes from Batman to Fat Man splashed across news stands the scrutiny in body shaming took a toll on Val's self-esteem and added to the mounted pressure he was facing Val's Sanctuary was sold and if it wasn't Sanctuary was sold personal problems it was Financial ones in the early 2010s it was reported that Val owed the IRS half a million dollars in back taxes forcing a lean to be placed on his Ranch this was perhaps one of the most significant blows to Val's financial and emotional well-being which came in 2008 when he was forced to sell a large portion of his beloved ranch in New Mexico to a rich oil executive Val had purchased the sprawling 6,000 Acres property in 1996 as a retreat from The Glitz and glamour of Hollywood however due to financial strains he had to part with a substantial portion of the ranch in 2011 to make matters worse he sold it for significantly less than he had hoped and retained just 14 acres the loss of his cherished Sanctuary was a devastating blow to Val both emotionally and financially throughout this period Val continued to work steadily in the entertainment industry doing what he does best with passion and skills appearing in films like Kiss Kiss Bang Bang and Bad Lieutenant Port of Call New Orleans however behind the scenes he was grappling with a deep-seated mental and emotional struggle that has plagued him for much of his life a lifelong mental Mental health struggles struggle in a candid interview Val admitted that he's never not had a broken heart and he's been depressed his whole life a statement that's very easy to understand why from his early separation from his mother to the death of his beloved brother and his bitter divorce and financial struggles vals never really had a break to wholly heal from old scars before another one surfaces it's important to recognize the amount of pressure and scrutiny that celebrities like Val Kilmer face on a daily basis the constant media attention demands of the industry and the challenges of maintaining a personal life under the unrelenting Spotlight can take a tremendous toll on one's Mental Health health and well-being as we reflect on the personal struggles and financial woses that battled Val during this period of his life it's clear that Fame and success does not Shield one from the universal challenges and hardships that we all face as human beings Val story serves as a reminder that even the most celebrated and accomplished individuals are not immune to the trials and tribulations of life but little did Val know that his greatest battle is yet to come one that will test his strength faith and his very will to live in came the life threatening cancer Throat cancer this is perhaps the most heartbreaking part of Val's sad story his Valiant battle against throat cancer this brutal battle with cancer All Began in 2014 when Val was in the midst of touring with his one-man show citizen twin he started experiencing alarming symptoms including difficulty swallowing and coughing up blood initially Val being Val he tried to downplay the severity of his condition drawing upon his Christian Science beliefs which emphasized the powers of prayers and spiritual healing over conventional Medical Treatments however Val's children Mercedes and Jack recognized the gravity of the situation and urged their father to seek medical attention in his Memoir Val pointedly shared that he didn't want to frighten his children by confronting his own mortality Val's love and concern from his family ultimately compelled Val to undergo a biopsy which revealed the devastating diagnosis throat cancer less than 2 months later Kilmer was spotted with what appeared to be a tracheostomy tube which sparked new concerns over his health in the uing months the selfie happy actor was photographed wearing scarves and shirts buttoned up tightly around his neck the news hit Val like a thunderstorm he was faced with the daunting Prospect of undergoing immediate surgery to remove the tumor followed by grueling rounds of chemotherapy and radiation the road ahead was filled with unimaginable fear and uncertainty but Val summoned the strength to continue to fight and face this new challenge headon the treatment process was nothing short of gruesome and brutal but Val himself is made of Sterner stuff he described the sensation of his throat being Zapped and left bone dry the aggressive therapy took a severe toll on his body requiring the aid of a feeding tube and an endotrail tube to assist with breathing but perhaps the most heartbreaking consequence of the surgery was the permanent damage to Val's voice that iconic Rich baritone that had defined so many of his memorable roles for an actor whose voice was his instrument his livelihood losing it must have felt like a crushing blow in his Memoir Val expressed that speaking was once his joy and livelihood and has become an hourly struggle the instrument which he had complete Mastery is now out of his control the emotional and psychological impact of this loss cannot be overstated yet in the face of such adversity Val displayed a remarkable resilience and an unwavering positivity Val struggles continued to mount when his daughter Mercedes was struck by a car while he was undergoing cancer treatment in a harrowing coincidence she was rushed to the same hospital where her father was being treated Val's son jack visited both his father and sister simultaneously later recalling the ordeal to The Hollywood Reporter he described feeling utterly miserable sitting beside two of his loved ones in such a vulnerable state fortunately mercedes's injuries were not severe and she made a complete recovery he leaned on his faith finding Solace and strength in his spiritual beliefs he also Drew upon the love and support of his family who rallied around him during his Darkest Hours in a touching display of gratitude Val shared his appreciation saying that he's deeply thankful for all the prayers and positive energy sent his way from all over the world slowly but surely Val began the arduous path to recovery he underwent intensive speech therapy to learn how to communicate with his altered voice in a beautiful twist of fate his son jack stepped in to narrate the 2021 documentary about his father's life titled Val Val the documentary it's ineffably painful in Val the documentary the new documentary Val to see Val Kilmer an actor still his prime enduring the effects of throat cancer his treatment for the disease which involved a tracheostomy led to the extreme impairment of his voice for the most part he needed to cover a hole in a small plastic prosthesis in order to speak and the result is a diminished monotone vow directed by Leo Scott and Ting Pooh is vow self-portrait and autobiography it is not a great film its form is less personal than its substance its Revelations and insights come only intermittently yet it is in its key moments something equally significant it offers Val a showcase that he has been denied not only by the ravages of cancer but long before by the troubled course of his career and the inherent obstacles of Hollywood filmmaking early in the documentary Kilmer declares that he had long wanted to deliver his thoughts about the art of acting which he also o knows will be the story of his life it took him a while to do so in Val and it's only when he does more than 50 minutes into the nearly 2-hour film that the movie takes flight as he uninhibitedly vents pent up frustration and disillusionment with ostensible highlights of his career up to that point in the movie The Story of Val's childhood and early career while filled with heartfelt Recollections and reflections of his family life much of it by by way of a monologue written by Val and spoken by his son jack the documentary also offers clips from an exceptionally poignant body of work the short fiction films that he made with his younger brother Wesley who drowned in the family hot tub as a result of an epileptic seizure Val didn't make it explicit but the gaping hole in his career as presented in the film is the absence of Wesley of a director who would be more than a director who would be a collaborator uniquely attuned to his fragile and volatile art as Val shows from the time that Kilmer hit juliard he was more than an actor a play that he co-wrote how it all began was performed while he was still in school and then was picked up by the public theater he intended to make a career on stage in his Memoir he recalls turning down a role in Francis Ford CPA's The Outsiders in favor of a play he reflects on his experiences his voice laced with a hint of melancholy sometimes he feels utterly down struggling with the blues as he travels the country pedling his past glory to some it may seem like a desperate attempt to cling to faded Fame a cringe worthy Endeavor to sell Nostalgia he acknowledges the perceived stigma how some view it as a lowly Pursuit akin to exploiting one's former successes like his iconic roles as Batman or the Terminator yet despite these reservations he finds solace in the encounters with his devoted fans and his initial discomfort gives way to heartfelt gratitude the admiration and enthusiasm of those he meets transform what could be a humbling experience into a truly enriching one Val feels his career Peak celebrity moment came with his starring role in Batman Forever he took the part without hesit considering it a dream role however his excitement was short-lived as the reality of wearing the bat suit proved crushingly disappointing the suit's constraints were physically demanding socially isolating and limiting for his performance Kilmer felt reduced to Simply showing up and standing where directed likening his experience to acting in a soap opera he turned down the sequel to pursue the saint seeking a more fulfilling role however ever his true enthusiasm lay with the island of Dr Moro where he could work alongside Marlon Brando unfortunately this experience also ended in disillusionment particularly when the original director was replaced by John frankenheimer Kilmer captured 5 minutes of footage on set showcasing the tension between him and frankenheimer who he felt was more concerned with meeting the schedule than exploring Brando's ideas the conflict escalated with Kilmer refusing to stop filming with his video camera leading to a heated argument this footage serves as a powerful highlight in the documentary Val offering a personal and intimate look at Kilmer's experiences in the film industry Val overall invokes the spirit and the absence of Wesley Kilmer the director who shared with Val the Primal intimacy unshakable confidence and absolute complicity with which both would have had good shots at becoming the fullest and most accomplished versions of themselves a realization that must constantly torment Val a return to where Return to where it all started it all started it's been an incredible journey Val Kilmer's Iceman top gun Maverick character returns with noticeably very minimal dialogue in the movie and there are both real world and story reasons why Val Kilmer doesn't speak overcoming numerous delays the Top Gun sequel became a massive box office success and was even nominated for best picture at the Academy Awards top gun Maverick sees Cruz return as hot shot pilot Pete Maverick Mitchell as he is now tasked with training Top Gun graduates for a challenging Mission he is also joined by his co-star from the original with Val Kilmer's Iceman Top Gun character appearing in a very special Cameo the Iceman Top Gun Arc saw him rise through the ranks between the movies and Val Kilmer's character is now an admiral who vouches for Maverick and gets him a job as an instructor at Top Gun when Maverick has doubts that he can train his team in time Iceman summons him to his house to give him a pep talk it is revealed that Iceman is dying of cancer and types out most of the conversation with Maverick and there is also a very real reason why Val Kilmer's Iceman Top Gun storyline took such a tragic turn Val Kilmer's own battle with throat cancer severely impacted his ability to speak and the actor's illness was incorporated into the Iceman Top Gun story for his appearance in the sequel Val now communicates through an artificial voice box making his scene in the movie Top Gun Maverick even more emotional with the actor being a real life cancer survivor however while he was cancer-free by 2016 the tracheostomy surgery he had to have destroyed his vocal cords Val went on to film his Iceman Top Gun rooll in 2019 but it was shelved for years thanks to the pandemic he actually released his documentary before that movie came out and in val he admitted that he can't speak without plugging the hole in his throat and he still has to use a feeding tube to eat since that time Val has worked with scantic who helped create his voice based on old movies and video footage he is still able to work and get around but the illness severely impacts the award-winning actor's career the Iceman Top Gun cancer Arc was as much a homage to Val's incredible life story and Defiance in the face of his illness making the Cameo all the more emotional top gun Maverick isn't Val Kilmer's only appearance since his throat cancer diagnosis and despite the difficulties he has faced he's managed to make several on-screen appearances in August 2020 Kilmer shared the screen with his daughter Mercedes Kilmer for the first time in Pay Dirt a shared Bond brought Val back Tom Cruz's Maverick and Val A shared Bond Kilmer's Iceman have a headbutting relationship in the original Top Gun with Iceman viewing Maverick as a reckless insubordinate pilot the Maverick and ican Top Gun relationship nonetheless gradually grew to respect one another through their travails with Maverick and Iceman rivalry essential to Top Gun the bond they developed has held strong throughout their respective careers as Naval aviators and shined through in the sequel even though Val Kilmer can't speak Tom Cruz's Maverick and Val Kilmer's Iceman have a headbutting relationship in the original Top Gun with Iceman viewing Maverick as a reckless insubordinate pilot the Maverick and Iceman Top Gun relationship nonetheless gradually grew to respect one another through their travails with Maverick and Iceman rivalry essential to Top Gun the bond they developed has held strong throughout their respective careers as Naval aviators and shine through in the sequel even though Val Kilmer can't speak following their meeting Iceman passes away and Maverick and his students attend his funeral however Top Gun Maverick's attention is very much on Iceman's Cameo Val Kilmer can't speak but this is has done nothing to dampen his cheerful free spirit at a time when an irrepressible thrill seeker like Maverick is haunted by uncertainty especially around his friction with Bradley rooster Bradshaw the son of his late friend Goose from the original Top Gun Iceman reminds him of the worldclass pilot he's always been Iceman's faith in Maverick reins Stills Maverick's faith in himself and Kilmer's Cameo is one of the most powerful moments in the Top Gun sequel with its layered subtext of the actor's own real story including Artificial Intelligence being used to recreate Kilmer's voice the fact that Val Kilmer can't speak in real life gives an even deeper meaning to Iceman's appearance in Top Gun Maverick rendering it a heartwarming tribute to his performance in the original film Val Kilmer's Iceman cameo in Top Gun Maverick was a rare treat very few people get to make a resounding comeback wrap up a character make the story better and get a 21 gun salute for their troubles it was the film's emotional core that helped Maverick reach its thundering success honoring its roots while allowing the characters to move on this was only possible through Iceman's presence undeniably contemporary entertainment's obsession with 80s Nostalgia peaked with top gun Maverick and one of the key elements to this is the perfect way in which Val Kilmer's real life circumstances were written into the evolution of Maverick and Iceman's rivalry though the Iceman Top Gun appearance was only brief in the movie his presence as Maverick's only real Ally in the ranks of the Navy was still felt throughout key scenes and with Iceman's goodbye being wholly faithful to Top Gun Maverick's epic 80s action movie Roots Val could not have asked for a better farewell to mainstream movies in an interesting connection between the original and the sequel Tom Cruz played a big role in bringing Val Kilmer's Iceman abroad in both circumstances though it took a 34-year delay to bring the top gun star back to the franchise Cruz was adamant that the sequel also needed Kilmer to return as well it turns out that Tom Cruz had advocated for Val Kilmer's casting in the original movie just as he did for the sequel in an interview Cruz revealed that he had strongly lobbied for Kilmer's inclusion in the first film praising him as a tremendous actor and expressing his desire to see him play the character while Cruz pushed for Kilmer to be cast Kilmer himself was eager to reprise his role as Iceman in the sequel while the actor had been away from the big screen to deal with his health issues he pushed to be included in Top Gun Maverick returning to a role that had helped launch his Hollywood career years ago both Cruz and Kilmer clearly knew the impact of seeing them sharing the screen again would have and how the real life events of their lives would make their scene one of the most memorable aspects of top gun Maverick in the midst of all these personal financial and health troubles Kilmer remains thankful for the gift of Life thanks for watching see you in our next video
