HAS SINCE TAKEN THE FLAG DOWN. FERGUSON POLICE ARE SENDING A STRONG MESSAGE TONIGHT AS THE NEW VALENTINE'S LAW TAKES EFFECT THAT LAW TARGETS DRIVERS WHO FLEE TRAFFIC STOPS. FOX NEWS TAYLOR HARRIS SPOKE WITH FERGUSON CITIZENS ABOUT THIS NEW LAW. >> THE FERGUSON POLICE DEPARTMENT IS SOUNDING THE ALARM WITH THE NEW VALENTINE'S LAW. IT IS NOW EFFECT AFTER A STARTLING RISE AND DRIVERS FULLY IN TRAFFIC STOPS. FERGUSON POLICE HAVE ENCOUNTERED 86 INCIDENTS THIS YEAR ALONE UNDER THE NEW VALENTINE'S LAW. THE CONSEQUENCES OF RUNNING FROM A TRAFFIC STOP ARE NOW MORE SEVERE. >> IF YOU'RE ACTIONS CREATED SUBSTANTIAL RISK OF INJURY, YOU'RE LOOKING AT A CLASS D FELONY, MEANING A MINIMUM OF ONE YEAR IN PRISON. NO PROBATION AND NO PERO. THE GOAL IS TO DETER PEOPLE FROM PULLING OFF WHEN AN OFFICER PULLS THEM OVER. >> I THINK A YEAR IN JAIL WITH CERTAINLY MOTIVATE ME TO STAY. STU. >> IS IT APPROPRIATE? I DON'T KNOW. I GUESS WILL. WILL DEPEND ON THE EXTENT TO WHICH THIS IS A FACT. BUT IT DOESN'T STOP THERE. IF SOMEONE GETS HURT DOING RICK'S K FROM THE POLICE, YOU CAN NOW BE SENTENCE UP TO 15 YEARS BEHIND BARS. IF YOUR ACTIONS RESULT IN SOMEONE'S DEATH, YOU'RE FACING ANOTHER 10 30 YEARS OR EVEN LIFE IN PRISON. SOME CITIZENS WE TALKED TO BELIEVE THE COMMUNITY SHOULD HAVE BEEN INVOLVED IN THIS DECISION. I DO THINK THAT PEOPLE SHOULD HAVE BEEN INVOLVED BEFORE THEY PASS THIS. YOU KNOW, LAW, I THINK THAT WE SHOULD HIT AS CITIZEN. >> A CHANCE TO SPEAK IF IT WAS A GOOD THING OR IT WAS NOT A GOOD THING. SO I DO THINK THE PEOPLE SHOULD HAVE BEEN INVOLVED. THE LAW LEAVES NO ROOM FOR AMBIGUITY. THAT MEANS EVEN IF YOU BELIEVE THE STOP IS UNLAWFUL, THAT IS NOT A DEFENSE. ONCE AN OFFICER'S SIGNALS USED PULL OVER, FILLING IS NOT AN OPTION. IT'S A LAW DESIGNED WITH A CLEAR PURPOSE TO PROTECT THE PUBLIC IN LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICERS BY ENSURING THAT FLYNN ITS TOP CARRY SIGNIFICANT CONSEQUENCES. THINK IT'S GOOD THING. IF IT DOESN'T, ABUSE AND THE PERSON TO FLEE WOULD NOT CAUSE THE ACCIDENT. ARE. >> ANYBODY? BECAUSE, YOU KNOW, WE DO HAVE PEOPLE LOVE THE SPEED. FERGUSON POLICE STATED WE WANT OUR COMMUNITIES TO BE FULLY AWARE OF THESE NEW PENALTIES. IF YOU'RE PULLED OVER, PLEASE STOP AND COMPLY. THE RISKS OF FLYNN FAR OUTWEIGH ANY MOMENTARY GAIN. PARTISAN
