if they can't go into Nashville and smoke not beat smoke the Tennessee Titans I'm going to be concerned with this [Music] team welcome to another edition of jets class we are pumped to have you guys aboard was hoping that we'd be talking to you today after a Jets Victory unfortunately that did not happen uh so where should your worry meter be after this loss of the 49ers we are going to address that plus Assan reic would he actually have made a difference when will he return to this team we're getting to that we're also going to open up the mailbag to address your concerns on the state of this team all of that starts right now with our first segment like we begin every week it's the [Music] takeoff it's the Jets because it's the Jets everyone and their uncle is waiting on baited breath for this team to slip up at all so they can jump in and say that Aaron Rogers is washed Robert Sol should be fire Woody Johnson should blow this whole thing up and start all over again because it's the same old Jets that's simply not the case after this opener in fact the next time we see the Jets play a team that matters the Buffalo Bills there's a good chance that they are 4- one there is a reason why on this show we said to you expect a slow start this is a team with so many new pieces on offense three on the offensive line of low Rogers uh L Tucker coming back from season ending injuries new receivers like Mike Williams and Malachi Corley they're trying to work in a defense that did not take part in the preseason nor did they run a single tackling drill all of Camp going up against the top tier 49ers it's going to take this team time to Jael that's why we said to begin this year there is going to be hiccups by the end of the year mark my words I still hold true on this the Jets will be the team you don't want to see in the playoffs sell your stock go ahead buy low because this team is still one of the best in the league and you're going to see it in short [Music] order it is time now for four downs you guys know how this goes it is four topics on the Jets my thoughts on those topics and it starts right now with first down my worry meter on the Jets right now is like a 0.5 there were certainly aspects of that opener that I didn't think were awesome and are certainly worth monitoring moving forward but it's nothing that I truly believe is going to impact this team long term with that said if they can't go into Nashville and smoke not beat smoke the Tennessee Titans I'm going to be concerned with this team because will Levis he is not Brock pie there's no one on this Titans offense especially I mean Calvin Ridley maybe but there's no one out there that's like Brandon iuk Debo Samuel Jordan Mason filling in for Christian mcaffry I would take either of those two guys obviously over Tony Pard who's not the back that we thought he was going to be when he got franchise tagged by the Dallas Cowboys this is a Titans team that should be picking top five to1 in the NFL draft the Jets are a team that believes they can make a legitimate run at the Super Bowl this is a game an opponent that the Jets should have absolutely no problem with if they still can't get to Levis like they couldn't really pressure pry if they can't stop Pard like they couldn't stop Mason if this offense can't get going against this defense then you know what maybe it might be time to raise a red flag or two you never know if training camp success is going to carry over into the regular season which is why it was so encouraging to see alen Lazard play as he did in the opener I know things started quite poorly with the drop on third down but to bounce back with six catches for 89 yards and two touchdowns the beautiful grab up the left sideline the really Hy play on the free play uh where he caught his first score I know the second one came in garbage time but still this was a player that not only fans but several in the organization wrote off I mean he was included in some potential trade packages although those things never came to fruition to see Lazard deal with some of that offseason scrutiny come off the worst season of his career and piece together the summer like he did and now the opener like he did one of the main concerns we had with this offense was whether they were going to have a piece next to Garrett Wilson Lazard I don't know if he's going to be a 12 13 1400 yard guy but he showed in that opener as he showed in training camp the ability to be the player the Jets thought he was going to be when they signed him that's a big bodied physical presence great on third down a big red zone option A 5050 ball getter that's what we saw against San Francisco if he can continue it again against the Titans maybe the Jets don't need a number two receiver maybe they've got one already in Lazard a lot of people ask me in the off season about the Jets and aside from the question of what do you believe they can accomplish someone wanted to know what I felt could derail their season there was really only one major concern that I had with this team and unfortunately it wasn't alleviated in the opener and that is their play calling with Nathaniel Hackett you know this team made efforts to add Arthur Smith to their staff and he wasn't going to replace nathani hacket in terms of hackets getting fired but he was going to become the primary offensive voice and play caller for this team that obviously didn't work because Smith went to the Steelers which means the Jets are running it back with hacket and you get the sense that they kind of feel like well if hacket doesn't have it at least Rogers can fix everything I don't know if any player in the league can handle that much pressure I mean there's so much that the quarterback has to do when you add that on their plate even for a player of Roger stature and what he's accomplished that's a lot to do and when I look at what went wrong for the Jets in the opener there yeah there were mistakes self-inflicted wounds but the play calling I didn't love I thought it was predictable there were too many runrun pass situations things that went wrong for the Jets last year that even with Rogers were going wrong this year will it be fixed maybe we'll see as they gel they get better they figure it all out but I would say that if that was an issue of mine before the season it's not exactly one that I I I feel much better about going into this Titans game I don't know if reck watched the Jets opener against the 49ers but if he did he probably had a smile on his face believing that his leverage uh increased quite a bit considering the Jets could not get to Brock pie too often with their uh front four now now I think the reason why the Jets couldn't get home had nothing to do with reic or the players that they have and more the fact that they just couldn't stop the run so they weren't in too many pass rushing situations where they could just pin their ears back and reic doesn't play The Run anyway so even if he was on the field uh he wasn't going to make too much of a difference in that game with that said though the Tennessee Titans they are not the San Francisco 49ers the that their front their offensive line is not what the 49ers present the the Titans should not be able to run like the 49ers did which means there should be opportunities for the Jets to know they're going to throw the ball pin their ears back and go get them we've talked a lot about reic and it's all about leverage and the fact that the Jets because they've spoken so highly of Germaine Quinn and Javon kinlaw Will McDonald they say he is a luxury they'd love to have him he make him better but they don't need him if they can't get to Levis this Sunday in Nashville reic is no longer a luxury he is a necessity and once he is a necessity he and his agency with Tory Dandy can go to Joe Douglas and say you need to pay me and I'm not so sure doulas will have any opportunity or any other option but to do just that whenever we do this segment I have flashbacks to watching Blues Koo when I was a little kid but it is time for Mail Time as we open up the mailbag to address your concerns on the state of the Jets heading into week two uh let's get right to it this question uh a little aggressive I think after the Jets just lost to the defending NFC champion and one of the three or four best teams across the entire league but again I I understand uh the people are going to be a little bit down with that said uh no I I don't think that Robert salah's job is on the line in any way shape or form and that's not just because I believe this team will turn it around uh but it's because the Jets don't fire coaches in season it's not something that Christopher Johnson did when he was running the team would he Johnson before Christopher was running the team or Woody Johnson now that he took the team control back over from Christopher uh the Jets don't like the message that that sends to perspective coaches basically like they're going to yank the the rug out from somebody as they're trying to build a team of culture and all those things and plus if you think about it no coaching change in season is really going to make all that big of a difference who are you replacing Robert solid with Nathaniel Hackett jeffre it's not going to make too much of a difference so no I do not think that Robert salot would be on the hot seat in this situation I don't think that Robert Salo will be on the hot seat at any point this year if the Jets make a coaching change it's going to come after the Year this is a fascinating question and I hate taking mailbag ones that that I can't specifically answer but that's the truth theories that I don't necessarily know I do think that this was a result of Kyle Shanahan one of the most brilliant offensive Minds across the NFL who has a rushing attack that is among the most challenging for any team to defend having an entire offseason to prepare for one opponent also he knows Robert Sol quite well because he worked with Robert Salah so I would hedge towards this being more a 49ers situation than it is a major concern but I will say if the Jets struggle the same against the Tennessee Titans they can't stop Tony per they're running down their throat just like the 49ers did then yes I do believe this would be a Personnel issue and then I do think that Robert Salah and Joe Douglas need to expand their Horizons in terms of looking for other players to bring in here that could potentially stop the run uh because if there is an issue I have no issues with the jet secondary I think that's going to be fine run defense maybe that would be a concern and if this was exposed and not a small glimmer uh of a problem yeah it's definitely going to be something that needs to be patched absolutely they can I I again I'm on the record saying that I do believe the Jets from a talent perspective are among the three four five best teams across the entire NFL not just the AFC it's just the players that they're relying on there are so many new pieces I know the offensive line practice together that's big but you still have three new start ERS there plus of L Vera Tucker coming back from the season ending injury Aaron Rogers hasn't played football in a while with the receivers they're trying to work in the defense which didn't play any preseason snaps and I know preseason it doesn't matter no there still carries some weight when you're getting ready for the regular season so I don't think that a 10 and s season is a mark of the Jets not being a talented team it's just a fact I think it's going to take them some time to gel together now if they gel together faster than I expect say two weeks instead of five or six weeks absolutely 12 wins is on the table I think the schedule here is getable for this team I just think there's going to be more hiccups than some expect early before the Jets really catch their stride to the middle of the season [Music] on thank you guys so much for joining this episode of jets class was an absolute blast if
