Are Colorado & Deion Sanders More Likely To FAIL In The Big 12 Than Arizona, Arizona State?

do you have to have expectations to flame out or do you have to have wins to actually flame out we're going to talk about Colorado and all the teams from the Pack 12 making the journey to the Big 12 it's another edition of Southwest bias get that stuff out of here it's Southwest [Music] fire as always brought to you by desert Financial Credit Union Arizona's Number One Credit Union named by Forbes I'm talking college football so of course I've got Anthony tow Tre and the Damon dog as well representing ASU U OFA and then myself Eric Ruby here guys the Colorado Buffalo's play tonight against NDSU they are the most polarizing team in all of college sports despite their lack of success last season and the question came to my mind are they the most likely to struggle flame out when this transition from the Pack 12 for the Big 12 so let's talk about Colorado and Damon you brought up a good point about the term flaming out for a team like the Buffs yeah I mean Colorado you finish in last place last year in the uh Pack 12 and I mean really where where do the expectations start I mean that's that's I think to in order to flame out you have to have expectations in general and when you finish in last place the year before how high should those expectations really be I mean nationally and from local Colorado guys they're as they're Skyhigh you couldn't you couldn't have high higher expectations so uh I do think that in that circumstance we you absolutely could flame out if you're Colorado there so to Tre I know you love Colorado oh yeah you're a massive Dion fan favorite favorite school favorite coach I think they are in that unique position where it's different than a team like in Arizona whose fans expectations are still higher than National but they still had success last year with Colorado it's like two opposite ends of the spectrum so for me I feel like if they struggled this year that would be flaming out because of how they treat the M themselves do you agree I mean I think if this team doesn't reach seven wins their fan base is going to set it on fire because of the expectations that they've already set and that's honestly that's less on the team like I've got my own issues with Dion and the team itself but that's on the fan base I've called that fan base White Walkers before droids um because it's just a Mindless Army of individuals who believe in nothing to be honest with you like there is no cause there is no purpose behind these expect um and there's nothing behind them like this Colorado team has shown you absolutely nothing over the course of the first year that Dion was there and they've just magically decided that the expectation for this team is a big 12 title game Damon are you out on Colorado improving relatively drastically this season I think they have to make a bowl game right like that's my expect but different between like expectations and like like what they should be and what you actually think they will be yeah um I mean I I I I think that they'll be around a five six win football team that's kind of where I see them this year but I would say that you know in in the general consensus would be that that's a huge disappointment for the season you you have guys talking about you know Travis Hunter and shadur Sanders both being in New York for the Heisman Ceremony you have guys talking about getting ready to play in the Big 12 championship game uh like this is the kind of expectations that have been put on Colorado by their fans by their media and and so I think yeah it it beds it bodess like the the the question like yeah absolutely they they have to win at least six games in my eyes or else it's a complete and utter failure yeah and that's a really unique position to to be and not that I'm pitying them at all because they have done it to themselves tow Tre but you could say this Colorado team has improved from last season and and in most you know you could you might be right you might be wrong right but in most college programs if you went from their last season let's say five six seven wins fan bases would be ecstatic right and now you're you're moving into a Big 12 Conference that is very physical very down and dirty and there's a lot of really evenly spread out talent and this is a team in Colorado that really struggled with some of the lower end teams in the Pack 12 because the Pack 12 is a good football conference but they they still struggled with the teams that aren't on the top end of that when it comes to conference play specifically where are the parts that you see Colorado struggling the most in all of it to be honest with you I see him struggling with all of it well look you have let's think about it right this is purely based off of what their fans think right Travis Hunter shador Sanders let's assume that those two are both legitimate Heisman candidates by the end of the season has there ever been a college football team in the history of this sport to have two Heisman candidates and miss a bowl game go less than 500 to not be in the upper echelon of a conference to not have ranked wins this is a team that last year had two potential Heisman candidates and were at the bottom of the conference and they got better in theory right in theory we'll see tonight against North Dakota State a good team if they can hang around with them and even then if they can hang around with them then great but nobody's going to really take this team seriously until they actually start to rack up wins and that's something they couldn't do last year something I don't think they're going to be able to do this year I mean we'll really find out about the lines I think tonight sure because North Dakota State I mean that's a team that consistently puts lineman in the in the NFL yeah has lineman in the NFL draft they they got big boys you know from from the you know nothing to do in North Dakota to East yeah nothing to do in except bail hay and uh and so I mean I think you we're going to find out a lot about Colorado's line play against North Dakota State and that's going to show a lot I think about how much their Improvement is going to be throughout the season and I know everybody Rags on the offensive line from last year and rightfully so I it was one of the worst in college football the worst well here's the thing here's the thing here's the thing there are some statistics that show they're not as bad as people remember you mean statistics that show that the quarterback held on to the ball a little bit so that's kind of where I'm going here but statistic statistics as as far as pressure goes Colorado's offensive line actually allowed shadur Sanders over the average amount of time that other quarterbacks had to make a decision and make a pass the problem was the ball wasn't in the air when that time went up shur Sanders was holding on to it if they do not see improvement from shadur I think he's still one of the better quarterbacks in the Big 12 I think he's one of the better quarterbacks in college football I don't think there's any denying him that on town alone but he's nowhere near perfect and he's nowhere near this like Godlike figure that he's ascended to for the Buffs like if he does not improve I think Travis Hunter is even in a different space than that but if shadur does not improve and their offensive line stays relatively the same and barely improves th this team is not going to come anywhere close to sniffing what they're saying could be oh maybe college football playoffs you know oh you know win the Big 12 Championship I'll fight a buffalo with my bare hands if they go to the college football playoff and I and I think it's so funny because I don't know if I was a Buffs fan I would be able to balance my excitement over everything because of yeah you were in the trenches like the gutter of literally a one- win season just a few years ago and now the excitement and the media coverage around your program is a complete 180 but like come on you're setting yourself up for failure to yeah yeah no it's a down year for college football quarterbacks that's that's what I'll say about shador Sanders it's he's fine he's all right like he's gonna be a high pick regardless because of the hyp because his name is shador Sanders somebody in my estimation is just gonna have to bite the bullet on that pick I don't think it's going to be great NFL quarterback dud Chargers come on down stop it you stop that right now I walk off this set what's the what how did it become consensus basically from like places like 247 on three I'm seeing Big 12 quarterback rankings and Noah faf and Jaylen Daniels are consistently lower than shadar Sanders and I I mean based off of what exactly I think Jaylen it's the injuries but for f I understand where you're coming from well you're saying they're putting shador higher yes right okay so like just based off of the recent events over the last 30 days right Colorado gets numbers gets clicks articles videos whatever right so of course you're going to put shador higher in the rankings because if you don't you don't get to cover Colorado right if you don't if you're you don't have red knees then you are not allowed to cover that program that's fair it's fair I'm gonna just leave that as it is I mean I just it's also like these places they want clicks right so wouldn't it be inflammatory to put shadur lower because then Colorado would would be up in arms and there would be so many go talk to yeah I guess that would it maybe from a a publication that doesn't send a reporter there to to the uh Colorado media availability often so let me add him listen if you don't know to Tre is our host on ph andx sundevils every weekday at 1:30 and now also doing postgame shows as the season starts this weekend uh this this man in Colorado it's just I done I've been saying since the moment he got hired I wasn't a fan of hire he's not a good football coach he just isn't and that's okay great football player one of the greatest athletes in the history of the world not a good football coach that's okay just find something else be retired like the rest like the other 90% of the NFL it's okay go be an analyst somewhere you don't gota this program is gonna Crash and Burn dude and I mean they can enjoy the hype they can enjoy the ticket sales but when he's gone which is going to be sooner rather than later you want to talk about somebody flaming out that place is gon to be set a blaze when he's gone okay so then let's talk this season right is it fair to say that out of Arizona Utah ASU Colorado that the buffalos are most likely to flame out I want a quick answer from both of you we'll take a quick break and then we'll come back and talk about the other three schools quickly Damon your answer is yes because I just looked at their schedule and they've got the five hardest teams you possibly could play in the Big 12 and that's not going to bode well for them and Tow Tre your answer is is yeah yeah absolutely I would have to agree with both of you but let's maybe play around and experiment a little bit with these other teams and see what would have to happen for Colorado not to take that mantle but first I want to remind you guys this edition of Southwest bias is brought to you by desert financial credit union for more than 84 years basically 85 desert financial's been Arizona's largest and most trusted Local Credit Union and it's not just from an ad re that is from me for Generations in my family we've been trusting DFCU only place I've ever held my money personally but what they didn't do for me all the way back then was what they're going to do for you if you open up a free checking account today you're going to get $200 in bonuses all you have to do is open up a free checking account online get your 200 bonuses and you can get started by visiting desertfinancial.com 20000 plus they've got everything else from your checkings your savings your mortgages loans credit card options all of that as well but we all agree Colorado is set up on a house of cards and they're probably going to collapse either this season or next right but let's talk about who are the other likely teams now for Arizona State University I don't think the don't think the expectations are high enough for them to be considered flaming out no matter what happens this season right yeah I'd say the expectation pretty much nationally and maybe even locally is five wins which a lot of people think that this team will probably be lower than that but if your expectations are the floor it's hard to go further down right yeah so I mean you can't really flame out if you're Arizona State uh I guess the only way this program in my eyes could somehow be worse than Colorado like in terms of flaming out is if you get yourself into another NCAA investigation I think that's the only way realistically uh but yeah I don't think this is a program that's that has even that capability this year on the same page U of guy and ASU probably can't really be considered a flame out or anything in Big 12 season well I'd say it depends if you you know watch PHX sundevils five days a week if you do you might you might hear a little bit of you know the rosecolor glasses with the rainbows and the unicorns these guys like to like to Pump It Up must be watching a different show man yeah I don't remember any of our win predictions say five to seven wins every day man top four defense in the Big 12 yeah what about that is crazy to you if I say this team is going to have a top five defense but they're going to win five football games but a top four is that Rose defense in the Big 12 you guys are making a bowl game maybe I don't know I think so do you remember the two I think was 2010 season 2010 season in the NFL Chargers number one offense number one defense in the league missed the playoffs because they had the number 32 special teams in the league to think about it all the time it's every morning when I wake up I shed a tear because that happened so it's possible maybe this is another Southwest bias where we could talk between expectations ASU U OFA because I I personally think like even with us I I think that we do a good job of of managing the hype of managing the hype of listen we think that there are a lot of good things about this team but we're not unrealistic but I would say maybe a fan base that has been maybe a tad bit unrealistic is uh your toats I feel like I'm not what so what is your expectations for the wild cats this season eight wins okay see that that's reasonable that is absolutely reason that's maybe the most Reon the other day saying 10 wins is what you're doing I mean I think that's the goal like the goal back to back go is is on the table and that's what you should be striving for but I think with the new coach it's it's tough to Envision matching exactly what happened last season so I'm I think eight wins is a is a good season anything above that is a great season and then seven I'd be disappointed six and Below would be pretty pretty tough to deal with I would say so let's just say Colorado ends up having an okay season right let's just say they get back to the bu six seven wins right but let's just say they're they're not in contention for complete flameouts Arizona if you if they went under eight games you would consider that probably the most disappointing out of out of that I mean it it I guess if if they were still bull eligible I don't know that there's a way that they can get more attention on a flame out than Colorado would because Colorado is just they just demand that much media attention yeah so if Colorado misses a bowl game and U OFA wins six games I still think Arizona is didn't flame out as much as Colorado but if Colorado makes a bowl game in u you know is is seven six wins or under yeah I mean I think that would be that would be tough for me to to deal with them having a similar record as us given the talent level on if they get five wins if Colorado gets five wins and Arizona gets six wins you still think Colorado had a Worst season if Colorado misses a bowl game I think they automatically have the worst season disagree I disagree with you your here here's the thing Arizona's expectations are almost just as high as Colorado fans I think they're based in somewhat more reality they way more that's that's the thing is y'all's expectations are way more Justified than what Colorado's got going on so that's why I feel like if you guys only get to six wins first off you'd miss out on the Brent Brandon special of seven and five but you in in my estimation what's the Kenny special we're not talking about the Kenny special that menu is still being concocted okay uh then I I think for you guys you got tedo McMillan you've got NOA to some of the best players already in program history and you only get six wins that for me is an immediate red flag to long-term Brent Brennan because if you can't win more than six games with two of the best players you've ever had then what does that say to recruits potential transfers about how good this program can be for years to come I think when you're in the weeds like like we are that might be the truth when you really look down at it because it's you're right there's three guys that were put in uh you know ESPN's I think first round mock draft and and basically every everybody has tario Davis Jonas aanaa and tedo McMillan as as first round pick so when you have three first round picks there's expectations I just think that if you look at the end of the season and Colorado has missed a bowl game and Arizona is playing in the Las Vegas Bowl but I think it's actually a better Bowl now but but than it used to be but say it's it's it's a bowl game like that I think people will people that are like us that are in the weeds might be like yeah that was pretty disappointing for them to win six games like that and be in that bowl game but the the main attention on the Big 12 Conference when people look at it is still going to be Colorado missed it a bowl game for the second year in a row I I just think that it's they command so much attention that there's there's almost we almost have to miss a bowl game ourselves Arizona does to in order for it to be a bigger story than where yeah and I get that I still feel like because your expectations are based in more reality that you have a little bit of a tighter leash when it comes to disappointing in Colorado does and then the last team Utah I think Utah has been deemed the safest pick to win the Big 12 the safest pick to translate as far as Pack 12 to Big 12 so to me the way that Utah ends up being the most disappointing team out of all the Pack 12 translators is maybe kind of the same thing that you said with Arizona like that's seven six wins for Utah this year clearly out of the top 25 and just barely making a bowl game I don't think it even would really matter what Colorado and Arizona does at that point point because if Utah falls off like that their standard tow Tre is 10 times higher no that's fair the likelihood though of that happening right and I guess we're I understand it but yeah it's because Kyle Whittingham has been doing this at Utah for 20 plus years and they don't have seasons like that they don't have six seven win years they are just a program that's built on an identity in year over-ear class after class um they're able to put that into effect so yes I agree with you I think everybody thinks Utah is going to be the safest pick they did ma magically win six games then I would say that's probably the same reality where Colorado wins eight and Arizona's going to the National Championship um so that reality for me far-fetched one yeah yeah How likely is the Utah fall off Damon uh I mean it's like to's saying like their floor as a program is about as high as you can find across college football but cam Rising I mean I I just I don't think it's very like at all that that a guy going into his you know 12th college football season is going to not lead his team to a to seven eight WIS like he the guy he's almost he's damn near 30 yeah so he's Utah is gonna have a good season the king of uh Mr get a job as I like to that's fair I mean yeah it's time to start jobob go go open up a car dealership sell some insurance or something he I mean cam ising so old that he went from it not being a job to it being a job no literally literally all right we got a lot more done pack we'll do it as the season unfolds let us know down in the comments what you think it was another edition of Southwest bias get that stuff out of here it's Southwest bias [Music]
