UC Davis football coach says the Aggies want to go undefeated at home this year

all right look this is no excuse Zone okay I mean Cal UC Davis UC Davis fell to Cal over the weekend now I instinctively around be like well come on man it's Cal that's a huge no but Davis had the lead they were playing well at one point I get it I understand and this it look you know you know what's not welcome in shville excuses that's right that's not what we do but we do love speaking each and every week and he's so kind to give us his time this early uh each and every week uh UC Davis head coach Tim plow joins coach it's Dave it's Jason good morning sir boys how we doing this morning doing good yeah how's shville shville is great we uh came up a little short this week but uh like I said no no pats on the back uh we'll uh we'll re uh reconvene this week and take a swing back at home hopefully uh get back to get back to the win and ways yeah so I I know you're um that's what you're going to do you got your home opener you got to look forward but at what point coach do you also look at a game like that and go okay we we're playing up we're playing a very good team obviously a program you know well you're ahead at one point in the game you probably should have had a larger lead is there some of you that thinks man a few things here and there and that game could have been completely different no doubt no doubt you know our uh our game plan was to kind of sit on the ball and and you know you're playing a team up a weight class like that last thing you want is uh for them to get 100 plays and just to wear you out so we we were going to slow it down and just try to stay in the game as long as we could we were doing pretty well I think they only had 20 plays of offense in the first half and I think we had like 50 and uh we just uh yeah just couldn't couldn't capitalize on a couple situations in our third quarter we really really played poor and they kind of ramped it up but yeah there's definitely a small part where like hey we hung in there with a bigger team but you know that's also a game we felt like we we could have won so I think we're a little little bummed out on Sunday about that but moved on ready for the next game coach and I'll kind of piggyback on that you you you sort of kind of answered it there but before I even asked just you're that's a huge program and not that UC Davis is some tiny little rink eting program but how do you balance as a coach the psychology of you know hey look we hung with these guys we had the lead you know they had to have a good second half we were on the road and also got guys I want you to believe that you can beat these teams and we have a whole season left how do you how do you balance the psychology of the locker room I think I already you know I was feeling out those guys after the game I know that they know the situation right we talked about it before the game you know a week in advance like hey we all know what this game is they're they're paying us money to play the game you know we're The Underdogs uh probably shouldn't win on paper but I also want them to like understand that we're trying to win every game and we're going to do everything we got to do to try to win that game but whether we're playing the 49ers or the Bears or Texas S&M Commerce knowing that we might have an uphill battle in some but uh when we don't win the game you know let's still come back and ex you know examine why we didn't win hopefully we can fix those things so that you know in the next game we don't repeat that and we do win you know you know it's funny you mentioned that I know to media and to fans it matters but to coaches and to players is there a little bit of extra motivation that that you might exercise when you are being paid to play a team when they're expected to win and you guys are the Pat the Washington generals going in there to get paid little old College rolling in ah easy win is is that something that matters to you guys on the bulletin board side or do you tend to ignore it uh I mean the the correct answer like the uh the professional answer would be no we don't think about that but hell yeah we think about that oh yeah if you're a player you're like hey man let's go ruin these guys day let's let's get that $700,000 check and a win and uh and make them feel really bad about so sure there's an added element of that um but you know I think the the the big thing for us was I think we realized we're a talented team uh made too many mistakes so let's just make sure we don't do that you know again going forward so we can hopefully as we're learning as the season goes you know we always say you're either winning or you're learning you hopefully as we learn um we're also collecting some wins you know coach it's such a small fraternity to the coaching industry and for you to have your first head coaching game against you know just a friend someone you worked with and you're going to come across this as you you continue your career it's going to happen and there'll be some games maybe don't know someone on the other side but how how interesting of A Wrinkle was that I saw your your pregame you know Embrace on TV and just different things like that that had to be unique for you coming from Cal coaching against you know someone you know so well that was hard uh I think that's always the hard part is you know competitively um you know you want you want to just compete and not have those type of emotions involved um but you know it is what it is I I I love Justin he I I do consider him family um and to be honest like we were laughing him and I because kind of felt like we missed each other because we just couldn't talk to each other you know when you're playing when you're playing your buddy you just kind of go Zero Dark 30 mode just don't speak and uh normally I would call him probably every week just to talk to someone about the game plan and like hey this is what we're thinking you know he would probably do the same thing so that was that was the bummer we laughed about that and kind of told each other like let's get let's get this one over with and then we can go back to being friends again and um I just I love him I I uh continue to look up to him and and I really hope that I really hope that the Bears um have a great season because because no one deserves it more than just that's uh UC Davis head coach Tim plow joining us as he does each and every Wednesday uh UC Davis the aies in yards in first downs in time of possession all beat Cal and all those stats there's obviously some positives to take and you guys have a home in oer the the season does not wait on anyone Texas A&M Commerce coming in so how do you how do you roll out of an opening year uh loss per se uh and then just make sure these heads are straight for uh for this match hopefully you know hopefully we're teaching these guys that every game is unique every game's got its own you know story to tell and uh and you really got to be process oriented that's that's kind of the whole Jim Soaker you know motto of just detach from results find joy every day you know we can detach from results if we just focus on the process it takes to be a really good team uh and that process starts you know every Sunday and finishes every Saturday so I think the the hopeful thing for me is that these guys can learn that there's a process it takes to winning a football game and uh every week we just got to improve that process and keep tweaking that process and um and we're going to be so excited to play at home we know how important it is to win your home game so our goal is to to go UND defeated at home that was one of our big goals at the beginning of the year so we gota to do that we gotta get started on Saturday with a win you know I'm sure there's something about put the last one behind you focus on this you talked about the process but also you want to shore up the mistakes miles Hastings played a lot of football for you guys um a little bit uncharacteristic for his three turnovers is that kind of a film study thing or ignore it move on like how do you approach that with your quarterback def definitely don't ignore it I mean you want to be able to hold everybody accountable you know we have this uh tell the truth Monday that we do where we uh we watch the film as a team and and we're going to hold each other accountable I think the you know the first two interceptions um are definitely mistakes that that we can improve and fix you know one of them was a really good pressure by the by the Bears they fooled him and uh the second one was just a pretty fantastic play by their linebacker but good lessons that you can learn from and the last one they're playing man coverage it's fourth down we're kind of on a 50 I me you gotta you have to throw that one and hope your guy can make the play so I think the the thing I want him to realize is that uh that we love him that I think he's a great player obviously played against a really good defense and when you're doing that you he probably 80 plays we played I bet he had 74 75 great ones and then the five bad ones at quarterback that could cost you a game so you got to try to be as consistent and um you know as consistent and ready as possible on every single play want to say we appreciate you coach because so far two for two on content for you not only we getting phenomenal information and a recap or preview but last week we got shred DeVille Jason yeah uh this week we get tell the truth Monday which is gonna be a wonderful counterpart to lie your ass off Thursday that we already have I think this is g to be a good segment everything happens over the weekend football's coming up and then we have a we go to shville we have a tell the truth Monday coach coach I appreciate you uh helping us out there yeah I mean do we have we have to have a name for Wednesday though because we do this we do this every Wednesday you know what I mean like is it is it wake up Wednesday or what what is this I we've just been saying we're going to shville it's shville Wednesday yeah but we need we need the gear we need the the yeah we need to get some money in your pocket coach so I I hope the I hope the people sewing and stitching and putting everything together and designing are are hard at work so we can get that shred bille gear out to the masses soon well you know I already I messed that up I didn't trademark that so that all goes to the school so they they beat me on that one we'll come up with a a Wacky all the cash yeah what if they did that for every game where a college got paid so like when they were at Cal yeah 700 Grand and then if you win they have like a ceremony on the field where like the winning team that got paid like they get handed or just a big golf check for 700 Grand to UC days that's a pretty fabulous experience sa State's done it a couple times you've gone and played these games where you get paid was Stanford one last year yeah last week they got paid to go to San Jose they get paid this week to go to Fresno State you're underdogs more times than not you lose yeah but the times you win one it's a great win too you get paid to do it it's like a this wonderful it's about as good as it gets like us every day getting paid to win so true yeah okay we'll take a break
